Just tested this for myself alongside Optimax, another mod that claims to improve performance and fix stutters. Be aware ofcourse that this is a sample size of 1, YMMV.
- No mods, max settings, no DLSS/FG for my baseline test. Averaged 42fps during a 1 minute sprint across the open world, with about 6-7 stutters often happening at the same location during repeated tests.
- With this AI mod, my FPS and 1% lows were not affected whatsoever, no gain or loss. However, stutters disappeared almost completely. No stutters in 2/3 runs, a single stutter in one run.
- With Optimax, FPS and 1% lows improved dramatically, about 15-20% with the highest "ultra quality" preset (42fps up to 51). However, absolutely no stutter improvement. Still experienced the same 6-7 stutters as the baseline.
With both mods installed, I got the same FPS boost from Optimax with the stutter free gameplay of this new mod. Happy gamer!

I guess this mod online comes into its own when using lower end hardware. A beefy CPU and GPU would have enough resources to spare to „brute force“ the issues OP listed I guess. If it had enough power to spare it shouldn’t be a problem to run things on a single thread, if that one is fast enough. So you won’t see much benefits from parallelizing it. But removing the times the CPU has to wait would reduce the stutters. Interesting. This is just my layman’s guess though.

not really honestly, stutters are still there even on my 9800X3D. Though, I did use a tool that pre-compiles shaders for Oblivion Remastered (about 30gb worth of shaders) and that reduced shader comp stutter by a lot, however, the game still has bad traversal stutter. I'm curious to try this mod out

I mean, if it is working what is the issue? How is this slop if it actually helps FPS? This is not the same case as the Epic Launcher saga…

I think the ideal usage of AI in gaming (because it will be/already is being used in development no matter how much people plug their ears) is for efficiency gains. Optimization is hard, tedious, and less sexy than new features but it’s probably the number one complaint gamers have. If you make reliable tests to ensure things run properly and then run optimization passes with Claude I say why not. That’s making life better for everyone.
Where I don’t wanna see AI is in things like art direction, quest design, narrative stuff, etc. That’s the human element of games that makes them good. Don’t let AI do the artistic job!

Calling it AI or vibe coded slop has never been about the actual quality of the software. People call it slop because they dislike AI as a whole and only assume that it must be worse due to being made with AI. But we're now approaching the point where using AI is simply going to bring better results than doing it yourself in 90% of cases, at least when it comes to programming. Hard pill to swallow for a lot of people, including me partly. But theres just no escaping that reality. Better come to accept it

even assuming that AI code is as good or better, at some point AI companies will need to start generating profits and will jack up their prices at least 10x
everything we're seeing now is a consequence of AI companies subsidizing 90% of the cost
here's another fun fact: once you let AI agents start adding code to your codebase you become 100% dependent on AI as nobody has time to understand what the agents are doing
oh and as the codebase grows the number of input tokens also grows, not exponentially but way faster than O(n)

Tbf when oblivion remastered was made, the best ai models at the time were complete shit compared to today, and the tooling was in its infancy, none of that agentic stuff and most people were still just using the web interfaces or maybe vscode + copilot or the old cursor at best. It's really improving at an absurd rate. Heck even open source local models that can run on a single gaming GPU massively outperforms anything from before early 2026.

Their entire studio has been outperformed by one guy and a Claude account.
That isn't necessarily true at all. Those devs are building for millions of people across a huge range of hardware. Claude was optimizing for just one machine in this case.
I'm positive that Claude would be able to find some overall improvements here (the game is quite old at this point) but these are always going to be the tradeoffs to accept when you're building software for the masses.
EDIT: the GitHub states it's only been tested on one machine, which kinda proves my point.

from my post in r/oblivionmods
- Each frame the game was re-building Sun/Moon, forcing it to re-calculate how light falls on each loaded object leading to crazy unnecessary CPU load. This was replaced with updates only in case something changes.
- There were lots of inefficiencies in memory operations, forcing the game to constantly allocate/de-allocate, now minimized via use of buffers
- Lots of operations (for example, preparing DirectX commands for drawing) were on a single thread and have now been parallelized
- Traversal stutter due to the game forcing loading of new cells / npcs inside them / linking objects to the physics engine / unloading old cells is now significantly reduced by allocating work across several frames without changing how the game behaves
- Several bugs leading to crashes, both in the original game code and in Remastered, have now been fixed
- Various Frame Generation improvements, from removing stuttering when CPU was forced to unnecessarily wait, to introducing full support for new AMD FSR Frame Generation (requires installation of AMD FSR dll 3.1.4, instructions in readme), including passing camera info to the algorithm
- Various stutter-reducing measures when opening menus / inventory and after loading screens. Shaders are now pre-loaded before the game starts.

In fairness... this is kind of what A.I was supposed to do. Humans checking and rechecking their millions of lines of code every time they add something isn't always feasible.
They call it optimizing and developers use to do it quite often, but games keep getting bigger and bigger. So now they sort of just up the requirements to brute force the problem.
Now with A.I... it can just look through the lines of code and note where there's performance hits. It's kind of fantastic it can do this. As all games could become much more optimized. This means getting more out of older hardware and potentially pushing games a bit further as well as it opens up a little leg room.

The anti AI are shitting on you in most of the subreddits this is posted. But when looking at the Github I am just simply amazed by how these are simple and seemingly logical modifications that optimise CPU and memory usage. This is the type of optimisation the devs should have done prior release or in a patch. Instead the customers get radio silence since July.
I hope they (Bethesda) pick up on this and review the optimisations that you, or lets be honest Claude is recommending. Combing these recommendation with a review of experienced developers could make it even more stable (because that might be a risk with your approach of using only Claude without any experience as a developer/expert) and part of a future patch.
36
u/Funky_Metal_Man 1d ago
Honestly this if anything indicates the utter apathy of that company if what appears to be fairly low hanging fruit of optimization was not even addressed. There is a difference between a studio being unable, and unwilling, to do the legwork to make a more quality product.

Bethesda has already abandoned the game. No proper patch in the last year. Whether AI-assisted or not, only people that have not played Oblivion Remaster can look at this and say "No actually, this is bad cuz ...."
5
u/thedybbuk_ 1d ago
There were mass layoffs at Virtuous Studios as soon as the game shipped. It looks like Bethesda only contracted them for development and not for post-release maintenance. All that knowledge is gone. And obviously, this Frankenstein experiment of a dual-engine setup was going to need post-release maintenance.
Annoys me no end because obviously a lot of care and attention went into stuff like art design and it's one of my favourite games ever made. It just needed some player feedback and metrics gathered post-release, and it could've been an all-time classic remaster. No amount of playtesting can compete with actual information gathered from millions of players.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Annoyed_Sai 1d ago
What a shame. The fact that they were able to manage this dual-engine remaster shows they had good talent working there. Mass Layoff after shipping such a game is a loss for everyone. I only hope we get ES6 in a working state at launch cuz Bethesda sure as hell isnt going to work on it too much. Other than once-in-a-while useless patch that breaks everything ofc. I do have hope for Skyblivion though. Supposed to release this year.

AI and it's consequences are ultimately complicated... This. This right here is what AI should be used for. This would be an absolute INSANE tool if it could be generalized.
Imagine, instead of "compiling shaders", an AI tool could tailor a game's code to your hardware? Heck, a local LLM could do this.
That's the type of stuff I'm on board with. Not the massive techbro/corporate take-over of the planet that is happening.
Imagine source code protection being a thing of the past, and a company has to rely on good customer service instead of simply having the best software and a patent.
But no, that's not what it will be, will it. Greed will not allow AI to be a good thing.

Game devs really should start getting used to having AI fix and streamline their code. Make games more optimized.
Games as a service would greatly benefit from it IMO.
With the shortage of storage and ram and the years of devs releasing games unoptimized. I think it's time.

Y’know, reading through the guy’s process and how he used Claude AI, it’s a use case where I can actually get behind.
The user is a person who knows how to code well. All the code lines they wrote and proofread themself (given it was at the suggestions of the AI). They primarily used Claude to look through and interpret the source code that wasn’t theirs in order to find the problem areas faster.
The ethics of AI aside, the two largest issues with entirely vibecoded projects from inexperienced devs is that 1) AI spits out code with many bad practices that make it extremely hard to maintain and bug fix for anyone, and 2) while the AI is capable of making large projects that work, it is incapable of fixing bugs it created during the process. This leads to a lot of sloppy “as is” projects that a vibecoder is incapable of maintaining.
I have high confidence that this user is able to bug fix the code that they wrote. Therefore I accept the use of AI here.

This is why I'm not against AI in the video game industry. Obviously they don't want to spend money optimizing their shit, but I was always convinced they could have used AI to optimize their code, because modern games do not look good enough to justify their system requirements. From the article:
The developer—or perhaps we should say, coordinator?—is careful to acknowledge that the performance tweaks were created with his system specifically in mind and that they may not work well for others.
This is almost always the case for these kind of 'easy' fixes. Gamers wine that a dev doesn't do something when the reality is they have way bigger stakes and way more things to think about than a modder. I'm a software developer and the first thing I think when I see something like this is 'Ok, does this change break anything else?'. IDK, if this mod does break anything, but there is always a tradeoff.
Not to defend Bethesda, I've been pretty annoyed with them lately like most other. I'm just pointing out that Software is almost never as simple as it seems.

Same thoughts, as a career dev.
Although I do think it's possible he found some real drawback-free performance gains, tbh. When it comes to optimization, you only really have incentive to get it "good enough" to ship. A fan who is willing to invest a bunch of personal time for no pay could very well take it past "good enough".

It’s surprising how the Reddit hive mind will criticize vibecoded projects even when they offer benefits. Many Redditors seem unaware that vibe coding still demands knowledge and experience to produce a quality product. Just like in any profession, when a tool emerges that simplifies your work, you’d be an idiot not to use it. Great job and I hope more projects like this emerge for other UE5 games to enhance optimization (looking at you stalker 2)
Edit: this post has received a lot of attention and has spurred plenty of good discussion. However, a few people are upset with my definition of vibecoding so I am deeply sorry for those who I have offended. I didn’t think a definition was so serious but to some it is.

"Vibecoding" is too broad a term. It means anything from "I have an AI tool that autocompletes mundane syntax" to "I asked ChatGPT to spit out a program and did nothing to verify it is safe or works".

Terminology and labels are always misused, especially in the news.
Elsewhere on Reddit, someone just asked...
>if we have news about curing cancer every week, then why is there still cancer?Answer: scientists make inflated claims to get grants, then news companies inflate them further to get traffic.

I know it's not your point, but the real answer is to that question is:
Cancer is not one disease, and trials take a long time.
A huge number of incredible treatments have come on the market in the last decade, and have reduced the chance of dying from cancer by something like 70% overall, with numbers closer to 100% survival for certain types caught early enough.
The next generation of immune and personalized therapies will cut that remaining 30% (which are a mix of late detection, rare cancers, or treatment-resistant mutations) by more than half, improve early detection, and reduce side effects dramatically over the next 5-10 years.

If a vibe coded AI on Claude can fix a game and make it playable whilst one of the biggest game devs in the world who have access to any resources can't, then what does that say about the state of game development ? Its funny seeing Claude doing things better than the so called game devs, and then they had the audacity to release a broken game and charge $60 for it.

u/refinery_eyes 1d ago
I don't think it says that much about the talent of the devs.
I think it does say that many game publishers, like almost every other company nowadays, do not care about providing you with a decent product and are only interested in cash grabs.
People are optimistic to think AI will change this, whereas I think that when game dev studios really start heavily utilizing AI, they will not use it to create better products, but instead will use it to push out cash grabs faster and faster.
That would follow the pattern that we've seen with AI so far; by and large, people do not use it to make high effort products faster than they otherwise would, but rather to mass produce a lot of low effort products.

It’s definitely information access (or lack thereof) … many of these companies/devs are competent in different areas but of things tend to be behind patents/methods/structure/IP/etc. These LLMs can be trained on all many different kinds of methodology to bridge the information gap and problem solving.

Reddit’s fanatical hatred of anything to do with AI is so insufferable now
DLSS is AI and it basically doubles performance in games for no real visual downside. Hell the AA from DLSS is way better than the dogshit TAA everyone was using before DLSS took off
Most people don’t actually care what tools are used to make a game, or a mod, they care if it works. And if this mod can work in reducing oblivion’s awful traversal stutter then I am glad we have it

Most blindly AI hating karma farming and virtue signaling trolls think that's how it works.
Can't wait how some people will say "I am not improving my performance because this is AI slop mod". Hopefully devs will start using AI to finally optimize their games better.

I saw a redditor recently comment that he would rather Cancer not be cured if it was AI that was a critical tool in the process of finally finding the cure.
That is how bad the anti-AI brainrot has become on this platform. He really really believed it too.

Which is really funny because we are using AI to cure cancer and other diseases for at least 15 as far as I remember, maybe even more. And at the times it was "incredible" and "exciting". These days virtue signaling is more important than actually curing cancer for idiots.

Yeah I really hate the narrow mindedness around AI development. Sure some of the tedious hand writing of code itself is less (and the industry is shifting that way to let’s be real and honest with ourselves) but there’s still a lot of human thought, decision making and testing that goes into a quality result. There’s agentic development and there’s Claude make it good and there’s a huge huge difference in results.

When somebody hits someone else with their car on purpose, do you blame the car or the driver?
If someone shoots someone on purpose, do you blame the gun or the person?
AI wont do this by itself. So yes, this dude's the mod author. The gap between intent and content with development is just being closed in. Either you sit on reddit and say things like "oh AI did this its not even real" or enjoy the benefits of somebody using a controversial yet powerful tool to make something positive.

Such a BS answer. Then you do it. Clown response.
Just because it was made with Claude doesn’t mean the author doesn’t have knowledge of the process and how to effectively use tools. It just means a single person was able to do it.

You're not allowed to use any tools to do anything then.
You can't take credit for that photo. The camera did it.
You can't take credit for dinner. The oven did it.
You can't take credit for that math homework. The calculator did it.
You can't take credit for getting to your destination. Google Maps did it.
Anyone who makes this argument doesn't understand how much work goes into steering an AI. And even as it becomes easier, you'll eventually just get used to the creature comforts that come along with it. Just like any other tool.

I think we're going to enter a point where all/most coding isn't deemed "authored," similar to how we don't call a user using a calculator to solve an equation a mathematician.
47
u/TheReviewerWildTake 1d ago
More likely we gonna enter an era where anti-ai cultist noise will just die out, and people who provide solutions for relevant problem will be thanked for providing solutions for relevant problems.
Just like we do it in any other field, without calculating "manual vs machine" ratios.→ More replies (6)→ More replies (24)6

I mean, we do call them a mathematician. We never said you weren't a mathematician for using an abacus, nor a slide ruler, nor a calculator, nor a graphic calculator, nor Wolfram Alpha.
Its as to whether or not that the tool is a primary function of your job determines whether or not you are a mathematician. Saying mathematicians don't use calculators is like saying chefs don't use measuring cups.

Why are people complaining about this? AI used to replace humans in making art is bad. I would never support a product using ai to create visuals or come up with a story, but why is using ai to write some code to fix performance a problem? It’s just tedious busywork and no real human art is being affected. No real human vision is being compromised to cut corners with a soulless machine. These are tasks that AI is actually fine for.

AI haters are the most bizarre and strange people I’ve met. I was born in the early 90’s and I have never seen so many clowns against a “tool” to speed up work flow ever in my life.
As long as a human is still verifying the final product who fucking cares what “tools” you used along the way.

Nuance is lost nowdays.
I can detest the use of AI as a creative tool for art, videos and music for the ethical concerns it raises, and at the same time I can admit that, as a tool outside of scenarios like the previously mentioned, AI is a ridiculously amazing tool that speeds up all sorts of workflows in incredible ways, from finding issues to creating corrections and organizing it in cohesive and understandable ways.
But no, its either bad or good, it cant be both at once.
AI is here to stay whether we like it or not, what we can hope is that its reined in and regulated.

This is the kind of work AI excels at that humans can’t easily do. It’s the exact opposite of slop, and we should be celebrating a new era for porting and modding.

Which is stupid when OP couldn’t have been more transparent about how they used AI to create this.

More stutters than actual FPS is insane. Yet when you complain about the stutters, you have a bunch of people ready to bite saying " The game is smooth on mine, Upgrade your PC/there is an issue with your GPU"
