they patched the hypervisor bug because some bum reported on it. Like afaik he wasn't even the first one to find it he just reported it for the 50k. Only with that they can dump the game.

There is some irony here when people are upset about hardware prices and then the only reason that this project has gotten as far as it has is people trying to crack the PS5 coding with the same AI causing all of the problems.

Just gonna drop the luthen rael quote: "What is my sacrifice? I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? EVERYTHING!"

Then you should also watch Andor, and it will become one of your favorite TV shows as well

51

u/MaintenanceBest8397 1d ago

Second this. Andor is so good, it takes like 3/4 episodes to get into but after that it's so captivating. The only star wars project in so long that isn't just CG slop. The world building, the story telling, the acting, the writing, the dialogue. It's such an incredible show.

It's one of the only things that really captivated me in recent years along with the Spider-verse movies, Dune movies and much more recently Lanterns TV show.

5

u/HikerRemastered PC Master Race 17h ago

Yeah this is true. I tried - twice. Didn’t work. Basically required me to become sick, have a Star Wars nostalgia crisis gut through the first 3 episodes and then WHAM. Hook line and sinker

There is some theoretical threshold where AI improves the efficiency of existing games/development/hardware to the point where it closes the hardware (price) gap it’s created and everyone ends up playing the same games they would have if it never existed lol

23

u/meowatollah 1d ago

Theoretical is right, because we'd have to ignore the entire socioeconomical impact said AI would cause as well as to be so incredibly naive to believe such advanced hardware would be affordable to the general public. It would be like looking at the world around us, seeing how things work in reality and believing that when everything gets a lot worse, we'd reach a point where it would magically get better.

they still have to report it legally via HackerOne and wait for Sony to patch it via a software firmware update before they could legally disclose it to the public.

Says who? Citation needed.

6

u/TwoBionicknees 1d ago

they're confusing two entirely different groups of people. People who ethically hack companies with the intent of being paid and tell Sony the second they find an exploit because Sony pays people who provide info on exploits. Then they get paid once the exploit or bug is confirmed (various grades get paid different amounts) and sign a contract to get paid that includes not disclosing or talking about it till after it's fixed, because it would defeat the purpose of helping them find exploits and getting paid if you announced them before they were fixed.

those people don't disclose them to not get sued (for the money they already got paid by Sony). Hackers who want to jailbreak and steal the games, dump them and release pirated games are a completely different group.

They don't announce the hacks till after they are patched because why would you tell your enemy that you have hacked their system so they can then try to patch it quicker?

Reminder, you don't need to share the exploit to use it. Those same devs can just use the hypervisor exploit to dump GTA VI, share the GTA VI files, and when report it.

49

u/notjfd More HDDs counts as upgrading, right? 1d ago edited 1d ago

they still have to report it legally via HackerOne

Wrong. It's literally a legal business model to sell exploits to companies that make tools to break into iPhones.

So you can just dump the shellcode on 4chan an hour after GTA VI hits retail. Or on Facebook with your name attached, doesn't matter. 1st amendment babe.

And if you want money, sell the exploit to some Chinese group who will sell a locked down dongle on AliExpress for $50 that performs the exploit. Make more money than you ever would through HackerOne.

You might get in hot water if the Chinese bundle it with piracy-oriented tools. But selling/distributing the exploit itself is completely legal.

6

u/Perspectivelessly 1d ago

1st amendment

Even just mentioning the first amendment in this context proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have no idea what you're talking about

27

u/sykoKanesh 1d ago

Wrong. It's literally a legal business model to sell exploits to companies that make tools to break into iPhones.

If you think that, you're an idiot.

Meanwhile people reporting massive security vulnerabilities in Windows get $350 assuming Microsoft even pays them

627

u/KiwiThunda 9800X3D | 64DDR5CL30 | RadeonVII 1d ago

Because it doesn't affect Microsoft's bottom line.

Pirating PS5+GTA6 could be a huge loss in revenue. Hell even I'm thinking about it to avoid giving Sony money

111

u/TransBrandi 1d ago

While true, if we want to look at the big picture, vulnerabilities in Windows probably do more economic damage than vulnerabilities in the latest Sony gaming console.

38

u/ted3681 Xubuntu 14.04 1d ago

I worked in Security for a year, what I can tell you is companies do a comparison of insurance to the cost of actually caring about cyber security and the bulk of the time the insurance wins. Is that insane? Yes, but it's what they truly do and it made me want to quit. There is no way insurance is going to help with this, it's a different ball game so I think this is actually a bigger deal.

I mean if he wasn’t gonna do it someone else would, that’s 50k for who knows how many hours of work

17

u/SuperBackup9000 1d ago

Yeah, and even if no one submitted it, there’s no real reason to assume it wouldn’t have been fixed in a short amount of time because it’s just too unpredictable. 50k today could be 0 tomorrow.

For every hacker out there trying to find an exploit in their free time, the company has employees doing the exact same thing for hours every single day.

241

u/Yiruf 1d ago edited 1d ago

Gezine, a veteran of the jailbreaking scene responsible for multiple releases, stated he won't drop the new jailbreak until GTA 6 comes out. Unless Sony figures out his exact exploit on their own, there is not much they can do.

Additionally, GTA 6 still requires 14.10 firmware, so GTA 6 will also need to bump it higher, which is unheard of.

28

u/kiwidog SteamDeck+1950x+6700xt 1d ago

He also mentioned that the previous game dumping methods didn't work without HV. So he burned his last lifeline.

So, unless another bypass is found there will be no dumping of GTA6.

But I'm honestly not sure that sony's rep is really down right now. A lot of what I'm seeing has the reddit bias on it. I think we'll only really know how well or poorly it's being received once we start seeing some decent sales numbers

Anything but a simultaneous release is double dipping. Even if there’s a remotely stable pc version that comes of this (big if), the effect on sales a year from now for an official pc version would be a rounding error.

7

u/Mr_ToDo 1d ago

Eh. How many people are so hard up that they'll buy it on console and then on PC, but wouldn't have done so if they came out at the same time?

I'd wager that the real double dip isn't necessarily from the consumers, but whatever deal they signed with Sony. Kind of like all that crap Epic pulled but apparently less in the light

Yes. The FOMO effect is still there even though a PC version is rumored to arrive much quicker this time around. PC gamers who don't want to wait may get a console version first and then get it again on PC. So still double dipping, but quicker, so some more patient PC gamers might wait the few months for the PC version (if it ends up being released in Q1 2027 as rumored)..

As it stands, you know what, if this happens I’m having it this way and they can fuck off. Say no to predatory business practices.

u/MrFreeLiving PC Master Race 1d ago

My exact thought process too. Even if the files don't leak, I'll pirate it once it's on pc and not give them a penny. Can't believe you can be so money hungry as the biggest gaming franchise in the world.

Before gta 6 is fully stable and running at a good performance natively with this jailbreak, the pc port would have come out by then

Yeah... Welcome to the brave new world fellas. Everything is getting decompiled, recompiled and jailbroken in a day.

The companies will have to adjust. They will have to make sure that the main customers don't have a reason to go down this rabbit hole. That means stellar service, reasonable prices and less predatory shit. Those overly aggressive DRMs will also soon go away I feel. There will be less reason to use them. Pirates are gonna pirate anyway.

Update: people who say "it's gonna be all cloud" please remember where the last cloud attempt ended. Nowhere. If someone decides to lock their game behind cloud-only streaming they can do so but you can also not subscribe and not play it. Easy. If you can't do even that then you deserve all the corpa abuse that is plaguing gaming now and in the future. If the game just needs a server to run we are still in my original scenario.

301

u/Ok_Seaworthiness2218 1d ago

More like every game will only be playable online. Insanely naive to think that this will come to benefit the consumer.

17

u/amasimar 1d ago

As if they haven't been burning money for years when it comes to the "always online" solution, and it completly falls apart every time.

Any cloud-based service crashes and burns because it just isn't possible to maintain, because it would need to be capable to maintain access during high-demand releases like GTA 6, but it's too expensive to do so in periods where no releases like that happen. If available resources are too small, people won't have access to games they want to play, so they won't pay for that service. It's a stalemate situation.

71

u/ColonelDucroix 1d ago

Only playable online huh?

Like skate. Right? Surely there's not a fan project called ReSkate that allows one to play that only online game completely offline.

Probably the only way publishers can get around jailbreaking and decompilation and all that stuff is by moving to a cloud streaming only system. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.

37

u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 1d ago

Surely there's not a fan project called ReSkate that allows one to play that only online game completely offline.

Or on private dedicated servers that are usually far more active than the official ones lmao

u/NewtonsLawOfDeepBall 1d ago

by moving to a cloud streaming only system.

I promise you they are already doing that and not just for games. All compute in general is going to be locked behind datacenter walls and you'll only be allowed to own a dogshit thin client that can't run anything meaningful and all network traffic will be heavily monitored.

Treat any silicon you own right now like a precious commodity that can't be replaced.

I work in tech and this isn’t even a little bit true.

The focus is quite the opposite - build more and deeper moats that AI can’t overcome. Everyone is acutely aware that AI can replace something quickly, so make it irreplaceable. I’ve seen a massive increase in encryption, license security, and hardware verification.

Sony today is absolutely doing everything they can to lock down their systems more and more. I think it’s likely they pivot to a fully online model where key game files must be loaded from servers in realtime after hardware verification.

23

u/Teyanis 9900X / 5070 1d ago

Its crazy that people think this will result in a win. Even disregarding the code of the games themselves, companies like sony will just go after the people developing the AI tools that are used for this with legal action.

I don't think an always online verification system will pan out, that would bring to much ire. But aggressive DRM baked into the source code rather than stapled to it later? Absolutely. Higher level encryption and hardware limits? Yep.

Its an arms race now, and the regular people that don't give a shit will be the ones to pay, as always. The internet just can't help itself but chase things and push things to far. Nobody has self control anymore.

LMAO, it means server authoritative code. Every game will need to be played online at all times and if your connection drops youre back to the menu. Then a very big push to get streaming games cost effective.

u/Budget-Pea8291 1d ago

In your dreams. They will just create a new way to lock down the source code. Or more likely, not give it to you at all. I wouldn't be surprised if soon all games (and software in general) became cloud only

9

u/Xay_DE Desktop 1d ago

"new way to lock down the source code" Lol, the src is never shipped to you already, it's not locked away, bits completely out of reach, that's the point of a decomp. And since the main binary still needs to be read by your local machine so it can execute u quite literally can't make it impossible, you can only make it harder

Wouldn't it have been better to announce these jail breaks/ bypasses, ai workaround boogaloos the day before GTA6 released?

23

u/its_witty 1d ago

Depends.

Both get you respect and street credit, thing is, when you don't announce jail break as soon as you find it, you run into possibility of someone else finding it (or even Sony) and stealing all the glamour from you.

5

u/YoinkerDoinker 1d ago

Genuine question, do these people actually get anything from the glamor and street cred? For some reason I would just assume everyone would thank people like this, and then simply forget about them lol

It doesn't matter, GTA is commited to being released on 14.10

They can push 14.11 that fixes it and it won't matter because GTA will still work on the previous version

Versions before 14.10 won't work as Sony/Rockstar made a commitment to 14.10 precisely to stop the jailbreaks/emulations concerns. Which hasn't really achieved anything as now 14.10 is jailbroken

TLDR; It wouldn't matter

7

u/threeefiddy 1d ago

Commitments can change

→ More replies (1)

5

u/VietOne 1d ago

But the game has been announced to be digital anyways. So a 14.11 firmware being required to access PSN to download the game would effectively require said firmware. Even if it could run on 14.10, you couldn't dump it anyway if you can't download it.

52

u/TheBupherNinja 1d ago

Why would they announce/release the jailbreak? Sony is going to try and patch it.

If the point is to get GTA 6, wouldn't it be better to wait for it to come out, then hack or whatever, so you can ensure that they actually release a version compatible with the break.

32

u/435rouhnj234_209u RTX 5090 | Ryzen 7900X | 64GB DDR5 1d ago

Depends on the motivation of the crackers. They may just want Sony to keep spending money to release more patches more than they want GTA 6 to actually be playable on jailbroken PS5s

11

u/1nd3x 1d ago

That, and they want credit.

That'll only work before release. After the game releases you only need a single exploit and never updating to have full access to the game files forever.
