It's been almost 3 weeks now since I was given a machine that my friends pulled out of the trash for me. They pulled it out a couple of months prior but thinking okay well if someone threw it away then clearly it's not a good machine so I wasn't in any kind of a hurry to get it.

I talked to the guy who threw it away. Basically when he was moving he had his stuff shipped as it wouldn't fit in his car so.. cheaper out and didn't get it covered. And the pallet fell out of the back of the FedEx truck.

He just tossed the entire thing assuming nothing was still good on it. I asked them. Did you at least plug it in to see if it would boot? " Nope. Look the power button is smashed in so how would I turn it on?" And as he's saying that I'm looking at the freaking power button on the top of the board.

But wanted to know if I could put something together for him to game on. So I take it home. Get all the broken glass off of it. Bend the heatsink back.

Wanna know what hardware was actually broken? 2 of the 9 5" RGB fans. And only one lost a blade the other still works just the outer shell broke off.

So I threw a Ryzen 5600x together. Dropped 30gigs of ddr4 in it (16+8+4+2 sticks) and gave him back his RTX 5070 as I felt guilty taking that too. Also his x2 2tb nvme as I am not low on storage.

It boggles the mind. How could anyone willingly throw away a 9950x3d with 64gb RGB ddr5 ram 4tb nvme 5070 with a x870E board. And to just throw it in the trash not even caring to see if anything suevived. The only other issue I've noticed was his 480mm radiator sounded like it has an air bubble. But it was mounted upside down which you only do if you want that to die in 6 months.

Been using it none stop for the last few weeks to run AI off of and my cute little GRE is doing fine with it.

I can't get over it. That cpu even used is like 500. And over a grand of ram 😭.

Yeah I ended up not feeling fully right, so I took it apart and cleaned everything, tested it all. It’s working fine got the guys name.

I usually give my old rigs away rather than messing around with selling the parts. My last 3090/AM4 rig went to the son of our regular maid. She mentioned to me one time her son liked PC gaming as well when she was cleaning my personal desk.

Others have gone to family and friends over the years, but most are old enough now to buy their own rigs if they kept up with the hobby.

I do wipe them though and give them a fresh debloated windows install.

Although not as new I came up with the same thing pretty much. A full on PC that only didn’t work because the water cooler didn’t work. Replaced it with a fan cpu cooler and it runs like a breeze

Find a used 6800 or 6800XT, or 3080 (preferably 12GB version), at most 7800XT or 4070, and you'll have a killer build

If you buy new a 9060XT 16GB or 9070 GRE, but that's expensive and a good used GPU would complete the picture better anyway, the achievement of getting a fanstastic build for the cheapest amount of money is the best feeling

I once knew a chinese exchange student that literally just pack up 1 suitcase and left the entire rest of the apartment behind. When she told me I can have anything I found useful in there, I basically looted the whole apartment. Everything I made off reselling her stuff was a down payment on my new condo.

A very coveted university is right behind my neighborhood and I can back you up on that. It’s cheaper to buy new when they get home compared to shipping it. So they just leave it lol. Brand new shoes? TVs? Etc.

I used to work at Staples and we had the electronics recycling program. I can’t tell you how many times I recovered MacBooks from going to waste. My biggest catch was the current M2 MacBook Pro that I have. The woman received it as a gift from her ex husband and she wanted nothing to do with it. I tried to convince her to take the credit for it and she said “You do whatever you want with it, I want nothing to do with it. Actually, you can have it if you need it”

Since you already have a pc and might use this as a plex server or something you should look into whose pc it is. It’s rare to throw out a pc like that and you could make that guys day if you find out it was tossed on accident or by someone else other than owner. I don’t know how big or small your apartment building is but since he didn’t wipe the pc maybe some files would identify him. Anyways nice find !

That’s literally how I started my PC Gaming journey. I found a working PC in the dumpster of my old apartment complex and brought it in, replaced only the motherboard and then started upgrading it slowly lol.
