It's a productivity monitor. It was never good for gaming.
110
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 Jul 17 '26
I bought a curved ultrawide thinking it would be good to replace two monitors side by side for productivity stuff while also being able to use it for gaming and that was the biggest waste of money I've spent in recent memory. Two screen is so much better for being able to snap multiple spreadsheets in place quickly
71
u/AlchemistJeep Jul 17 '26
You can do that in software can you not? Lg software for their ultrawides has it built in to split it into virtual monitors for snapping and full screen purposes

You can very easily do that using FancyZones which is part of Power Toys, a program made my Microsoft that adds a TON of functionality to Windows.
It's free and awesome.
29
u/monkeyhitman Ryzen 7600X | RTX 3080 Ti Jul 17 '26
I can't imagine working without it. It's a breeze to juggle tons of windows with zones and Shift snapping.
10
u/SaltDeception Jul 17 '26
Check out the settings in the main PowerToys app. You can set it so you can trigger the zone snapping by right-clicking instead of shift. Super fast and ergonomic.
You can also set it so a middle-click will trigger zone spanning, which isn't quite as useful, but still nice.
5
u/Murtomies Jul 17 '26
This is how I use it too, every day. I have a vertical 2nd monitor, so for that I have 3x ⅓ zones stacked on top of each other, which makes more sense for a vertical monitor. And you can easily combine the window to be the size of two zones by dragging it between the zones. So you can have one ⅓ size window and a ⅔ size window on it.

u/ImDaDawgFather Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
Display fusion is way more powerful if you enjoy the features. I've never seen a program that had that many features.
For example I can play WoW in the middle of my screen at 2560 by 1440, put a Netflix screen on my left 1/3, and have the program mirror* it to my remaining third on the right side.

I travel for work with a laptop. And have to copy paste data from several systems into my repair tickets. Tiling makes my job much easier. It is it 1 extra click and works really well.
2
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 Jul 17 '26
From what I'm googling, apparently the Windows 11 implementation of this has more options than Windows 10 which may have made this better on the ultrawide.
Unfortunately this was 5-6 years ago. I'll have to try it out when windows 10 support ends and I'm forced to upgrade
2
u/ashgs872tbhjs Jul 17 '26
Windows had it 15 years ago lmao
2
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 Jul 17 '26
No it didn't. You could only split the screen once horizontally and vertically with Windows 10 snapping. Combining 2 screens into one cut the number of snappable places in half which was the entire issue.
3
u/AHrubik 5900X | EVGA 3070Ti XC3 UG | DDR4 3000 CL14 Jul 17 '26

My main monitor is an ultrawide (and has been since 2019) and man it's like you didn't even try. PowerToys (made by Microsoft) has an app called Fancy Zones that let you create window snapping zones. There's tons of pieces of software that do this. Just simple googling would have solved that problem.

Oh, I don't NEED more than 60Hz on my work PC. I have one as my main horizontal monitor and one as a vertical side monitor on that PC (which isn't great because its a VA panel and gets kind of washed out when vertical, but I tolerate it because its great for Outlook and Teams).
I just mean that when I go from my 165Hz gaming PC to my 60Hz work PC its pretty jarring, and its definitely noticeable. Things feel slower, laggy, choppy, etc.
2
u/CKRatKing Jul 17 '26
You really don't, and 60 looks fine. But if you are used to double or more it looks bad. Same with fps in games. If you've only ever played 30fps it looks fine. But once you get used to 60 30 looks super choppy.
3
u/Techno_Gandhi Jul 17 '26
It's not really about how it looks, more about how it feels. After using high refresh rates, going back to 60hz feels choppy and slow

I wouldn't say "no" good. You can still play games just fine. You're just living in VSync forever. Frankly though for $15 that's beyond a bargain no matter how you slice it.
Plus Dell, for all their fuckery, has usually put out decently good monitors. So even if it's just 60Hz, it still makes pretty pictures.

3
u/Pimpinabox R9 5900x, RTX 3060, 32 GB Jul 17 '26
People who say shit like this are silly. Resolution doesn't matter half as much as you think. Screen size + resolution + distance to screen + how well you can see combined are what make the experience. Experiments have shown people can't really see much beyond 90 pixels per degree. In extensive studies people with incredible vision could see up to 94 ppd. If you're curious about your PPD, the formula is .01745 x PPI x distance from eyes to screen in inches.
People think 4k tv's look fantastic, but they're usually lower ppi than 1080p monitors. A 50" 4k screen and larger have lower pixel density than a 24" 1080p monitor. But since you (should) sit further away, it looks good to you. Personally the jump up to 120hz+ is worth dropping down to 1440p for my situation, as my vision isn't perfect and I'm sitting a bit further away from my monitor.
TL;DR: Blanket statements are usually bad, mmkay.

I saw (in 2008) a flat panel monitor easily retails for 250$ went for 315$. I started the bidding at 50$ thinking that was solid but no ran up fast.
Later I got a CRT for 5$ (when CRTs were still the better for colour range)
A lot of this stuff just falls victim to new stock coming in. These overstock & auction places you can get real steals
