Still crazy to me how we went from cathode rays that have easily permanently burnable screens, to hard to burn screens, to screens that are only somewhat less prone to permanent burn.
(I know newer OLEDs are apparently way less susceptible to burn in but it’s still not to the same level as LED).
Will never forget one time i got something through limewire that simply adequate everything I type come out as "I'm a fucking idiot". Got a good laugh out of that ngl. Quick reset to a day prior removed it.
I remember the url bombs before activex / flash / JavaScript was sandboxed. Go to the wrong page and suddenly there are 100 moving windows across your screen of I think a banana point and laughing at you while it said “You are an idiot, ha ha ha hahaha” on repeat.
I got one that when executed made the screen appear as though all files were getting deleted, desktop getting wiped out, and the screen eventually going blank with a message getting typed out to the effect of “next time might not be a prank.” Good learning experience for a kid I guess, lol
I’ve never seen it and I have absolutely no context for the meme at all (just that it’s some kind of rickroll-esque thing), and even I knew it was bad apple lol
I love wallpaper engine. I have been using it for a long time. Didn't use it for a bit because of the performance hit when on my older system but since I just built a new system(luckily just prior to these pricing shenanigans) I don't notice even with multiple monitors. It's great.
Dang I haven't heard that name in at least 30 years. Still remember picking up After Dark at CompUSA with my parents one evening then going home and literally spending hours looking at all manner of flying toaster.
Bad Apple is a song from Touhou Project, a video game series.
In the games it's just an instrumental, but a full version with vocals was made which became popular for its minimalist black and white animated music video.
There's been an internet trend the past couple years where people remake the music video using all sorts of different screens and other mediums (kind of like the "doom can run on anything" trend)
It would be more accurate to say that there's been a recent resurgence in the past ~5 years, I feel like a lot of people were doing it during covid and a while afterwards too
Touhou project is 30 years old and also kind of niche, I don't blame you for not knowing it lol. I only learned about it from seeing Bad Apple recreations
Naw that's just the new screensaver by copilot.. unfortunately Microsoft didn't know about it because they didn't check the code written by copilot in the last update.
Bad Apple might the one meme that consistently shocks or surprised me with how it's implemented, like how the fuck did some guy get it playing on a fur suit head!?
The Touhou project fans use a song from the 1998 Touhou Project game Lotus Land Story, someone added this monochrome Video to it, and then Bad Apple was born
and because the video its only black and white it gets used as a "hello world" kinda thing in programming code for any type of display
then a old internet rule saying "Rule86: If it exists, you can play Bad Apple on it." got added to the rules of the internet
