Better go back!

Dammit! My spouse and I are National Parks completists and we were sure we’d covered all of the Arizona parks in our trip to all the Four Corbers states a few years ago. Now we have to go back.

(In all seriousness, I am always happy for new national parks, especially in the Southwest where land preservation is so vital.)

It's a beautiful hike. There's a nice area to have a picnic when you first pull in too. Deer love to hang out there.

I don’t think this is actually preserving any new land, since it was already a national monument.

True, but I think that national parks garner a certain amount of gravity and splashiness as far as public goodwill that national monuments don’t, so I’d like to think they become that much more solidified as public land in the minds of Americans. It may not make a practical difference but I think long-term it adds a certain cache to keeping them protected.

National monuments have weaker protections than National parks.

For example, Bears Ears National Monument had its size massively reduced by trump with a flick of his wrist. Meanwhile, the proposed land swap at Yosemite will have to go through congress and the courts.

I loved that part of Arizona when I was there. You won't regret it.

You've been to American Samoa National Park then? How was it?

7

u/Alexispinpgh 9h ago

Oh we’re still in the process of visiting all the parks, we only started about 7 years ago and can only take one or two trips a year. We’ve visited 28 parks so far.

I’m honestly shocked that this administration would allow any new NPs.

u/mikewheelerfan 10h ago

This site was already a national monument, so the administration isn’t losing anything by upgrading it. It’s all just theater. They get to say “look, we made a new national park, we’re so environmentally conscious!” When they didn’t even conserve any new land

Pack it up, everyone, we found out the real October Surprise here! They’re appealing to the conservationist base!

Well, the notes said “appeal to the conservative base,” but reading isn’t their strong suit.

2

u/lothlin 4h ago

Too bad for them, all the conservationists are absolutely furious about all of their funding being cut.

You are mostly right. The main difference is that Congress designates it as a National Park, while the President can proclaim a Monument using the Antiquities Act of 1906.

Typically, it is better when it becomes a National Park because just like how a President makes a monument, they can remove it too.

This administration is trying to abolish multiple national monuments for the first time in US history. It’s unclear how that will play out (last time Biden rescinded the order before litigation finished), but if successful that would make Parks a significantly stickier designation than Monuments. Not saying we should give them credit for making this a park, but it’s definitely nice.

u/shelterdoggone 8h ago

A bill to make it a national park was introduced in 2022, so the idea isn't new to this admin.

Federally funded golf course?

2

u/boywithhat 8h ago

There are a couple of national parks with golf courses actually.

Josh Mayer did a video of him playing them

u/bulbusmaximus 8h ago

Just need to bulldoze it flat, paint it american flag blue, and drive a presidential motorcade through it

5

u/someoldguyon_reddit 9h ago

Especially without trump in the name.

0

u/cfrydj 9h ago

Especially with Spanish (or an indigenous language?) in the name!

1

u/Gollum_Quotes 6h ago

This will actually be the 4th National Park signed into creation by Trump.

u/Friendly_Engineer_ 10h ago

There’s got to be an angle. Maybe a wealthy maga kook in AZ asked for it as a favor.

u/gpm21 9h ago

The congressman there is a "Tio Tomas" if you catch my drift and is probably pandering to the hippies to win.

12

u/TrailMomKat 8h ago

Wow it isn't everyday I see my people in the news, let alone spelled and pronounced correctly lol

u/Ranger_242 12h ago

Must not be any copper, natural gas, uranium, shale oil, or other rare earths in the area.

30

u/Tommyblockhead20 12h ago

That they know of right now*

You know what will happen if they find any

john mccain in hell regretting that he couldn’t rape this part of arizona’s natural beauty too

4

u/ZonaDesertRat 10h ago

Nice BS take on the issue to show your own bias.

-11

u/Fuzzy_Donl0p 10h ago

yes, i’m biased against politicians who spent their last dying breaths fighting to violate native sovereignty in order to rape and pillage virgin nature and rural communities for mining companies and their profits.

what is your argument in support of that?

1

u/XxChocodotxX 1h ago

Before asking why, ask if. So I ask if what you claim happened. Let’s see some sources first. (and no, “just Google it” is not a source, not anybody’s job to make your argument for you.)

u/Significant_Jump9887 10h ago

I would pay money to hear Trump try to pronounce this.

6

u/danwoop 9h ago

Lovely place, I went in January this year. You can see coatis here, there’s cool rock formations and there were lots of Mexican jays

17

u/darthy_parker 13h ago

The Parks Service giveth, and the Parks Service taketh away.

5

u/VirginiaLuthier 12h ago

The great chief Cochise was a Chiricahua Apache .Now you can amaze your friends

5

u/mirrors69 9h ago

Is it pronounced kai-ri-ka-hua?

15

u/amygdala23 9h ago

More like Cheer-ee-kawwa

3

u/HTH52 8h ago

If so, I am proud of myself for getting that right at the first read-through.

13

u/omegaequalsone 11h ago

I think you meant to say Americahua national park. /s

2

u/nowhereman136 8h ago

Damn, the percentage of national parks I've been dtk has been lowered slightly

5

u/RobertTx57 10h ago edited 6h ago

Shocked its not called Illustrious God-Like Trump National Park (Edited: WOW! Just saw some videos of the park. Beautiful!!! )

3

u/paolilon 9h ago

There must not be any ranchers, miners, or oil/gas companies that want it…

5

u/gnanny02 10h ago

Apparently he didn't read what he was signing.

4

u/PluginAlong 10h ago

That would require him to know how to read.

1

u/superb_superior 3h ago

great, now lets demote gateway arch to national monument

1

u/ScratchLatch 2h ago

After one google search I see why.

-4

u/RoadSmash 12h ago

Hell announce new drilling there in less than a year

4

u/BigMountainSkiiier 10h ago

Yeah, that’s why he designated it a national park 🤡

If you actually care about preserving public lands, then be happy when positive action is taken and don’t just bitch and moan because you don’t like the person who got it done.

Trump has a spotty record at best but this here is a clear win.

-2

u/RoadSmash 8h ago

It's a joke bro, didn't bitch and moan about someone criticizing a person who deserves every bit of criticism.

Congress got it done, Trump just didn't veto it. He gets no credit.

0

u/thegooniegodard 9h ago

Surprised it's not called America National Park.

0

u/Flat-Airport-1949 1h ago

What natural resources are there for trump to sell to his buddies? There has to be some grift.

1

u/boywithhat 1h ago

That's not how national parks work...

-1

u/Loquacious-of-Borg 8h ago

I assume Trump only allowed this because no gold, oil, or rare earths have been identified at this time?

If there was anything that could be mined or drilled within 100 miles I am certain he would be selling off the mineral rights to Russian companies left and right.

-17

u/you_killed_my_ 11h ago

isn't there like some wars he was supposed to be ending a few hundred days ago?

I guess those are all taken care of

14

u/kinetic_honda 11h ago

The guy running the national parks service was supposed to end wars a few hundred days ago? Are you lost?

-8

u/you_killed_my_ 11h ago

Oh I'm sorry, if you read the article the first few sentences make it sound like a certain someone was to "thank"

3

u/kinetic_honda 10h ago

Nope.... It just says Trump signed something. You seem to be reaching. Why not just be happy for a new addition to the national parks roster? Are you saying he shouldn't have signed, or would you have rather not read his name at all in the article? There are browser extensions that you can get to replace all the instances of the word Trump with something else. Maybe do that so you don't stay angry all the time

0

u/you_killed_my_ 10h ago

people not being angry is exactly why we are in this nightmare bro

-22

u/DogPlane3425 12h ago

Not America National Park I!

-50

u/ApplicationCreepy987 12h ago

Perry sure that should be named Trump Park

7

u/MrNewReno 12h ago

Do explain because I can’t wait to hear the logic behind this nonsense

3

u/PluginAlong 10h ago

I'm hoping there bwas just a forgotten "/s" but these days you can never be sure.

8

u/tehkitryan 12h ago

You got something on your nose

2

u/PluginAlong 10h ago

It goes all the way down to their neck.
