Pokémon, sports cards worth nearly $1 million stolen from FedEx truck
https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/trading-cards-stolen-from-fedex-truck-psa/3958318/435
u/Pork_Chompk 1d ago
Somebody obviously knew exactly what truck that shipment was going to be in and where it would be.
268
u/ToeRoganIsJebus 1d ago
Parked outside psa, unlocked. Drive disappeared for 30-60 mins. They literally stole pallets out of the truck lol. Inside job all day
75
u/Warcraft_Fan 1d ago
I'd take that driver's phone and computer and check for email, if the driver mentioned the location and away time, driver is in cahoot.
42
220
u/Foe117 1d ago
unless the boxes were labeled, it's an inside job by some employee at FedEx or the shipper who knew the shipping manifest and what was inside of it .
30
u/No-Aardvark-3840 1d ago
True, but to be honest with you, PSA boxes are pretty easy to spot. They come from specific addresses and usually are shaped in very specific ways.
Apart from this incident which does sound pre planned, I am sure FedEx has been responsible for the theft of countless thousands of shipments from PSA. Simply because the driver knows a box contains something from them
89
u/SilverAgedSentiel 1d ago
It was leaving PSA, so probably they were loaded an empty trailer, and if you know what PSA is you probably know exactly what they handle.

MtG also has this problem, because they have these time-limited sales that sell out almost instantly and their site sucks balls so the people who want them are physically unable to purchase them. Like a year or two back people were clowning on WOTC, that the only way you could actually succeed at getting in the purchase queue was to use a JavaScript hack...because for some dumb reason the site ran client-side code and you could bypass the line. WOTC is all about paying the least possible amount of money to deliver a barely-functional product.

It wasn’t just Pokemon cards lol, someone lost their numbered smaug mtg card that alone was 25k.
16

The irony of that Smaug card was the owner drove it down to Miami and handed it over personally for grading because they were paranoid about it being shipped.

Saw that over in the mtg subs. Didn't realize how crazy valuable the shipment as a whole was

they were picking up outgoing packages from PSA - a company that grades trading cards.
15
u/LordVayder 1d ago
Hopefully they are stupid enough to try to sell the graded cards, which will be easily traceable.

Thats what one of the Pokemon resellers told me directly. First it was sneakers, then hype clothing, then video games, then pokemon. Just another bubble. You go into these stores that specialize in pokemon or cards in general, and its all grown men making up values that mean absolutely nothing. "this cards worth $400." Why? Cause thats the number we made up.
→ More replies (1)7
u/PringlesDuckFace 1d ago
That's how everything works. The value of a thing is what two people agree it is. That's why a neighbor with chickens might give you free eggs, but a business will sell them for profit. If someone will pay $400 for a bit of machine printed cardboard then that's what it's worth to that person at that point in time.

Pokémon cards are dumb. I tried buying some for my godson, but there are always grown ass people crowding the machines at the grocery store. It took me months to find him a pack to send as a random gift. Luckily the scarcity has made it so that even he has lost interest.
38
u/CrustyKielbasa 1d ago
I have fond memories of going to Toys R Us in the 90s and grabbing a pack or two out of the bin filled with hundreds of them. Scalpers, high demand, scarcity, etc have ruined the appeal of cards
→ More replies (9)3
u/MoltresRising 1d ago
Agreed that scalpers are making the hobby miserable. When Base Set dropped, people would also scalp and hoard the packs. It was the latest rage and the easiest ways to get cards was the starter deck and other theme decks. You would see 6 year olds going to Hot Topic hoping they had packs left. It was wild, and that was before scalping groups coordinating retail camping.
496
u/otherwisepandemonium 1d ago
It's so cringe. Every time I go to the grocery store or Target there are lines of grown men looking antsy and anxious to get to the machine, but can only watch as one selfishly cleans the machine out.
At Target they'll line up, snaking around aisles, staring at the person restocking merchandise and it looks like Black Friday shenangians as soon as the vendor steps away.
Let kids have their fun. Scalpers are the absolute lowest of the low IMO.
192
u/goosetaff 1d ago
Accidentally got to a target before it opened as I was running morning errands, so I went to the front door to wait. Some Pokemon buyer got in this big huff and confronted me asking me if I’m buying cards and that there’s a line and had this whole attitude about him. I just said no and turned away like the hell? Some real fucking weirdos.
100
u/ScreamoGuyRuinIt 1d ago
Our local Meijer literally has a guy stand in the parking lot and give out numbers for people in line/waiting in the parking lot. The shit of it is, this guy isn't even a Meijer employee, he just a random guy who started doing it and it happened to make it easier for the store so they let it happen. They let him have first dibs at the product, he organizes the masses. Crazy little ecosystem that's been created. He's there with people every weekend, but if someone happens to show up before he does, he throws a fit.
39
u/lilnext 1d ago
We have what they refer to as "chasers" since i dont live in a bigger metro area. People who follow the company truck that stocks pokemon etc and calls in their friends once the person is almost done stocking, watched 4 guys (50 year old+) clean out 3 separate stores of all their pokemon stock. One of them was even joking about how he had 6 cases of a set left but everyone was only offering 80$ over MSRP so hes "out of stock" until they are 150$+ profit.

Some of these people's incomes rely on getting either sealed product to resell or buying a bunch of cards to hit those rare hits to, again, resell.

u/veggeble 1d ago
That’s a job that shouldn’t exist
26
u/Saxavarius_ 1d ago

You think they can’t print enough cards to destroy this market? It’s by design
17
u/Heronymous-Anonymous 1d ago
It’s kind of a yes and no thing.
There are more than enough of the regular, not at all special versions of every card set that people can play with and compete normally.
It’s the foils, limited editions, and other collector’s cards that drive this secondary market activity.
The solution to this problem is to just tell people they can only buy 2 packs at a time in a 24 hour period. Scalpers thrive off of being able to just buy out all of the stock at once and then resell the valuable cards. Make it not possible or worth their time to keep going back day after day to be drip fed packs of cards and they’ll stop, and regular people will be able to get cards again.
4
u/Saxavarius_ 1d ago
It drives hype so people buy more. Thats the whole reason those rare chase (i think.thats the term) cards were made.

u/swheels125 1d ago
My son got really into Pokémon this year and our target recently had a “kid friendly” card drop event that was at noon on a Sunday instead of 3am, they had a line that people had to get in to then get a ticket that they could exchange for 2 of the little boxes of cards. They had a few cops for security and the employees made multiple announcements that if there was any shoving, fighting, or bullshit that they would arrest people and if it got bad they’d shut the event down. The whole thing went great, it was 75% kids and families and I didn’t see anyone fighting or trying to jump the line. We went at 10:30, stood in line for an hour and a half and it all went smooth. I think it’s a credit to the store manager and the employees who ran the whole thing more than anything else. They organized it well and made sure people knew what was up instead of a “it’s 3AM come and get it” approach.
15
u/1877KlownsForKids 1d ago
There was a release of something recently while my wife was taking a kiddo to B&N in the morning. Long lines, finally asked a clerk what was up. Apparently the whole crowd was well known to them; they hit Target when it opens at 8, Best Buy at 9, and B&N at 10.

Yeah, a lot of times these machines are sold out. I'm like, this has to be some sort of gambling shit. I swear, 75% of the time someone is buying from those machines, it's an adult man.
38
u/Jik0n 1d ago
They buy them to resell online on apps like tiktok for "rip and ship" livestreams. Idiots will overpay them for the product, they'll open it live on stream, and ship them the cards.
5
u/tyrified 1d ago
So they are paying for other people to open their packs? Seems like a good way to resell resealed packs without getting caught.
3
u/TooMuchPowerful 1d ago
It's not "sold out" in that the machines are out of packs. They just like sales to random quantity and times. That's why people loiter around the machines waiting for the next random "drop" to enable them to purchase.
3
u/NotYou007 1d ago
They have machines now that dispense cards? I know my local Walmart just has an aisle that has all the cards and it looks like a bomb went off in the area constantly.
5
10
u/1877KlownsForKids 1d ago
It's apparently gotten worse as they found ways to identify the packs with rare cards. So they do their little detector thing and resell the sealed packs without special shit.
23
u/Jik0n 1d ago
People have bought CT scanners / imager or whatever to x-ray the packs and offer it as a service online for giga expensive packs / boxes.
https://xrayauthority.com - this is one example I found with a quick google search.
The hobby has gotten fucking nuts and I only buy single cards of what I like to collect now when prices are reasonable for that specific card.

My kiddos want to play with family members. I have a color printer and an exacto knife. Guess who now has all the cards they want.

That works or you can order "proxies" which are just fake cards that are sold as fake. I use https://www.printingproxies.com this website but some people are not fans of them. Instead of spending like $6000 on a magic the gathering commander deck I spent like $125 lol. The quality is decent and in a sleeve you don't notice. Holographic can be hit or miss.

17
u/Jazs1994 1d ago
Unfortunately those will be scalpers not actual Pokémon fans. Most of the official vending machines in the US got taken away because of their behaviour. Scalpers started putting trackers on distribution trucks because they started making their deliveries random times of day on random days of the week because people had their schedules
10
u/azwethinkweizm 1d ago
The only way to stop them is to lose interest. Here in DFW we had a bourbon scalping problem for a few years. It got so bad that the only way to get the good bottles was to either pay 4x from a scalper or wait in line overnight. Casual drinkers like me eventually lost interest and today you can find stuff on the shelf that was almost impossible to find 5 years ago. Wild.

Which is precisely what will kill pokemon and leave all these “investors” holding the bag. The kids aren’t gonna like it anymore because adults ruined it
22
u/freidi 1d ago
But it's not kid buying those expensive graded cards.
Unless you're talking long-term then yea it is unsustainable. But if there wasn't money to be made all those adults wouldn't be lining up (I think)
16
u/Scorch8482 1d ago
What kills bubbles like this is when the underlying outlook on the product finally changes and the original demographic loses interest. Look at streetwear and sneakers from 2014-2022. High value fashion items were reselling for 2-5x markups and selling out immediately. The fever was ferocious until it got to a point where everyone buying was no longer buying because they liked the pieces, they were buying because of the dollar amount the products would be valued at on resale.
What eventually killed the streetwear trends was broad realization that these clothing items made you look like the assholes who destroyed the hobby, aka the hype beasts and the resellers. By 2022 it didn’t matter if you were buying shoes to wear or to stock and sell later; it became uncool because you looked like a douchebag wearing that shit that nobody else could have.
So hypebeast culture died and all those assholes moved on to crypto and pokemon cards, where they could scalp their next big buck.
But let me tell you, eventually the scalpers and the adult fanatics will shift the general outlook on pokemon from fun game for children to scalp central and cringe / greedy millenials. Once that happens and there isn’t a new gen willing to buy cards from the older gen, prices will crash and so to will the company.
Greed from the masses is killing pokemon. It’s like a virus you can identify but it hasn’t sprung its poison yet. I give it like 2-3 more years before sentiment crashes and people start recognizing “pokemon fan” as a negative versus a quirky fun hobby. Happened to sneakers and it’ll happen here.

I agree to you to an extent but what Pokemon also has isn't just the trading cards. It also has merchandising, anime and videogames. Maybe being a "Pokemon collector" is seen as bad in the future, but not "Pokemon fan" especially on the videogame side which isn't so scalpable since anyone can get a copy on a relatively affordable console (well compared to Nintendo's competitors). There is also the competitive side which is far more niche but Showdown and Champions (on mobile too) is free.
Also playing the TCG is very affordable partially due to all the scalpers throwing playable cards on the cheap. The Worlds winning deck is about $50-70 to buy the cards at minimum rarity. The big problem is the collector side of the market. TPCi can fix the modern side of things but cannot do anything about vintage era cards.

Scalpers can eat sand tho.

u/Oohhdatskam 1d ago
I live in a town of about 80k so not a super huge Pokémon scene like that. Theres a Pokémon group for the area an grown men scout every post seeing where things are stocked at then go an take basically everything before anyone can get them. Staying outside target at 3am, stalking the dollar stores looking for them. Stores have had to start keeping workers by the stock just to allow regular people who dont buy like that an kids to get things.

I thought I was lucky when I saw a vending machine with them. Looked at the price and looked them up online. The vending machine was already scalping them with their prices. I could have bought online with shipping for cheaper thru a retailer.
6
u/FluffyFrostyFury 1d ago
It is agonizing being an adult fan who likes collecting them because I really like the art on the cards (and any duplicates I get I literally just give away) when there are middle aged men standing next to the vending machine buying every single pack before literal children, let alone my grown ass can even get the chance. Like my bad I wanted ONE packet
10
u/canada432 1d ago
The scalpers have been having a meltdown because TPC created plenty of stock for the 30th anniversary releases and are flooding the market so the scalpers can't buy it all up. There's man-children threatening to sue TPC because people can actually just go into a store and buy the products, ruining their "investment".

u/YourInMySwamp 1d ago

I find it interesting that an armored truck will typically have $1m-$3m yet this truck had over $1m in just cards, probably happens quite often between cards, small electronics and jewelry carried in those.
29
u/dangshnizzle 1d ago
Likely worth more than $1 million btw. Everyone involved is going to want to use the most conservative pricing possible for paying out as little as they can to the victims
8

By that same logic the card owners would want to exaggerate the value of their cards as much as possible to receive the highest possible compensation.

Surprised Pikachu face.
Pokemon is THE largest media franchise on Earth, and they can't even be bothered to implement the most basic of security protections on their main website. Let alone provide protections or assistance in situations like these. For literal years now, every single card restock on their site has sold out nearly instantly to botters, while local stores are being robbed by the dozens, entire batches of inventory just vanish from their distribution to backdoor dealings, and we even have people fucking stalking card vendors with GPS to every store in their area, just to clean out the shelves and move them to Facebook marketplace.
Reselling Pokemon has become an actual "job" for degenerates with zero shame in these last few years.
During which time, they have had the exact same plan, and nothing but complaints from players and collectors.
Pokemon can print all the billions of cards they want, they shat out over 10 billion just last year, but their distribution is literally rotten to its core. An actual cancer on the hobby. Until something is done to address who actually has access to these cards, I expect things like this to continue to be the norm. Probably get worse.
To be frank, with how much value is in some of these, I'm honestly amazed we haven't had an instance where armed men just waltz into a card show and leave with millions of dollars in cash and cardboard.

They defend these companies who wrong them. So the companies get worse.
People keep defending and buying so the company gets worse.
Tell people to stop buying they call you stupid, hater, jelous, or anything else.Company gets worse
They keep buying. You point out the horrid flaws, and people dont care that the company is fleecing and fucking them over.

I wish they would stop shipping through fedex. It gets nerve racking knowing that there’s a very real possibility that my package gets ripped open if the pokemon center makes it obvious that the package is from them. Just recently had a $70, non-TCG, item that thankfully was untouched but still was anxious during shipping.

The fact that there is an artificial rarity to any of these cards is stupid.
If the game was lesser known or had a smaller fanbase you could make a balancing argument. That goes out the window given the sheer number of card collectors there are.
I’m not against the randomness aspect of it but rather the gambling aspect of hoping to get an artificially rare card in a pack.
They’re no different than loot boxes in videogames and I’m surprised these TCGs haven’t face the same legal or legislative scrutiny videgames have.

The cards themselves are fine if you're just collecting or intending to actually play the game, and you can absolutely still find the cards to purchase. The scalpers are the assholes doing asshole things. As long as you don't by from them, and only buy from reputable sources, you won't have issues. My boyfriend collects. He just likes filling his card binders and getting the cool art. I still manage to find booster packs around.

If the perceived value of these cards keeps going up then expect it to only get worse.
