LaMarcus Aldridge talks about how Wemby is so skilled that it causes him to overthink. Says he needs to slow down and develop a couple of "go-to" moves that he can rely on consistently.

There is a paradox in philosophy known as Buridan’s ass, that states if a perfectly rational donkey, that always makes the rational decision, would be unable to act if placed equidistantly from two sources of identical food.
Since there is no rational reason to choose one over the other, the ass cannot act.
The logical solution is to randomly choose.
Maybe Wemby can learn from this.

u/Ok-Background-502 10h ago
Adding to this: Aldridge is saying if the donkey wants to be ahead of the competition, it should have a default direction to go to any time as soon as it sees two equally rational choices.

Aldridge walked the walk on this one. His post-up to midrange turnaround jumper was silky smooth and effective back in the day. Felt like it never hit the rim.

Those first two games in the 2014 Houston series I swear he could not miss.
11
u/AntiAntiDentite7 6h ago
And it's pretty much the only move he used. He would counter aggressive defenders with a pump fake/spin move when they were expecting the fade, but that was 99% of his offensive game. Two moves. You only need two moves. Wemby has none. Inconsistent congested step back jumpers are not a move.
1
u/NonnoAldo 4h ago
Absolutely. When he figured out that fade in the post it was an automatic 2 points as soon as he got the ball in his hands. Loved that shot.

u/LightSpecialist804 Knicks 11h ago
kind of reminds me of when Anthony Davis first developed a 3 point jumpshot, then came out in the season opener and looked like garbage because he couldn't decide whether he should be shooting, driving, or posting up and was just kind of doing a little bit of everything and not getting into a rhythm
40
u/indoninjah 76ers 9h ago
Chris Bosh went through this too when he decided to finally expand out beyond the three point line. He said it's less about the shooting and more about the mental barrier
1
3
u/AntiAntiDentite7 6h ago
Not really, though. That was AD adding something new to his game. That's always a difficult adjustment. Blake Griffin went through the same thing. Wemby isn't adding anything, he's just struggling to find consistency by relying on inconsistent offense like long range jumpers when he's not an elite shooter.
3
u/juice13ox Celtics 5h ago
Thats the issue I've seen with Tatum for years. He can't decide what exactly to do and defaults to a step back three that looks ugly instead of going with the flow of the game

Honestly, if he just stood around the arc, chucked 3s at a decent clip, and just ran back for defense, that would be enough to put him in MVP conversations. I think he tried to do too much on offense last night.
He also cannot play the most minutes on their team.

u/Electric_jungle Washington Bullets 11h ago
Everyone evolves with each other. Playoffs is where teams take away your best moves and you have to learn what to do next. This season everyone got to watch Wemby all the way into the finals and has built to combat him specifically. So he's gotta evolved to counter the wemby stopping moves. I'm sure he's already got a ton of that pounded into his brain this summer, just might take some games minutes to lock it in. I certainly wouldn't expect nearly anyone else be able to battle the Spurs as well as OKC can.
33
u/Poopcie 11h ago
This conversation is starting to remind me of how people said the same thing about dwight and it never quite materialized in a dominant way with that baby hook and ultimately the league just decided to make him a defensive anchor
31
u/DarnellisFromMars New Jersey Nets 11h ago
He was a defensive anchor the whole time regardless, but got his 20 points or whatever from rim running and the occasional baby hook or face up situations.
He never got to that 25-30 a night tier of offense because of those limitations, basically didn’t become Shaq, but Wemby already has the jump shooting and is simply longer.
8
u/Electric_jungle Washington Bullets 11h ago
I mean that definitely could be his future. He's been amazing so far but he's still getting paid on his future potential. But it's hard to look at what he's done so far and think anything but... He's still improving.
I have more questions about the team around him, personally. If Castle can be that efficient from 3 on a whole season and level up his shooting, and Harper builds on an awesome rookie season, that team is going to walk into a top 4 seed.
14
u/Poopcie 10h ago
The regular season wont ever be an issue for these guys but the playoffs will. Could one of these guards actually be a 30 ppg caliber guy who just doesn’t get the possessions? The reason to run the offense through a center is for easy looks but if hes got the same shot diet as everyone else and they have an easier time getting to their spots that creates a redundancy that can be exploited.
4
u/Electric_jungle Washington Bullets 10h ago
I was, poorly, attempting to suggest that the guards aren't there yet and I largely agree with you. I just refuse to hot take on day two of the season. I was confident Knicks were gonna win before the series started and every time Wemby shot from the arc I was like yup, that's exactly where you want him, where a team can lean on it's perimeter defense and not have to worry so much about interior. There's really no path forward for wemby other than using his body on the inside, unless he actually turns into KD, but that's... Not happening I don't care how exciting his 3 looks when it hits.

At every level of a sport, your “go to” move changes because it’s a reaction to how competition perceives you.
16
u/smalls_1804 Knicks 10h ago
I think he's heard it but sounds like LMA is arguing that Wemby is not listening to that advice and is instead working to increase the number of moves he has to pick from rather than becoming elite at one-to-two things

What people are saying is he has so many options, not that every option is good or elite for him. 35% is not bad, especially for a guy at his height. He can and should continue to shoot threes, but he needs to stop doing it at the volume he does sometimes. He needs to figure out his shot diet and what actually works for him on offense

What exactly is his go-to move? I'm talking about a move he does consistently in crunch time when he has to get a bucket.
9
u/DamnReality 10h ago
I think part of the issue is that they’re asking him to be too much of a self creator. Like he can make a jumper, he can do stuff in the paint, why does he always need to work his way there from the perimeter in those moments?

He's almost completely relying on his athleticism at times and wants to have the ball in his hands. I don't think he can play the way he does now for 10 + years and there's gonna be a point where it starts getting hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

Dirk didn't turn his one legged fadeaway into a reliable move until a decade into his career. Harden's stepback wasn't his go to iso move until a few years into his Rockets days. It takes time to learn composure and how to impose your rhythm onto the offense instead of getting sped up by the pressure of everyone else

Post: Post hook, turn around J, dunk
Elbow: Floater, pull up middy
Wing: Jab 3, drive
Off the roll: floater, dunk, kick outThat’s basically 4 shots at 3 spots and then as a roll man. I’d be pushing him to just rep those over and over again.
So far he looks like it’s so freeflowing and unplanned, that it hurts his decision making and efficiency.
Like sure if the play breaks down or it’s a transition, open it up and use the creativity. Otherwise he needs a solid diet of shots, like all the greats

u/pretzeldoggo Kings 10h ago
Learning how to play back to the basket takes time and wisdom/experience.
Also, it depends on who you try to emulate as a player.
I emulated my game a lot after Manu and Dwade, who did so much back to the basket as a guard. After a bad injury, I had to resort to a lot smarter basketball since I lost athleticism.
Wemby has such god given talent that he doesn’t have to rely on the back to the basket. He needs a coach holding him accountable to it IE what pop used to be
9
u/danjustin Nuggets 10h ago
Also back to the basket requires massive lower body strength to hold your position. Think about it...one person is basically in the strongest possible position a body can be (forward facing, knees bent) while the other is back facing into the force.
Wemby is huge...and the size does have some strength, but not back to the basket lower body strength
7
u/pretzeldoggo Kings 10h ago
Which is why I literally said get the ball at the high block for this exact reason. It requires a ton of strength.
But again. You read the defense. If Wemby has a mismatch you abuse it. If they send a double you swing it. If you have the height advantage, get a clean look over the top. If you have a blow by, hook shot, floater up and under.
So many different iterations, but after watching the Spurs in each playoff series- the one universal I saw is not enough post entry passes to Wemby. Also teams, hacking the shit out of him off ball

this has been a thing for like over a year now. they have no offensive sets or plays and don't give him the ball in opportune moments. when they do get him the ball inside the 3pt line they just double him and sag off of castle (which happened multiple times last night) and then dare castle to shoot which is why he took twelve 3s (dunno if that's his career high but it's a lot more then he usually shoots)

u/CrissCrossAppleSos Spurs 7h ago
Whenever people talk about what Victor should develop, they mention things from previous eras. The reality though is that developing a Dirk fade when you’re Dirk, and you’re getting to a 47% jumper in a league where the half court offensive rating is like 95, that’s fine. Getting to a 40% jumper in a league where half court offensive is like 108…it’s not.
I get that everyone hates when people talk about math and repeat that it’s not a math problem and talk about spreadsheets, but in any game where a score is kept, it kinda is a math problem
5
u/SwizzGod Lakers 5h ago
Sometimes you just need a bucket. In times like that the only math you need is 2>0. And like LA was saying those 2 points allow you to get in rhythm so you can get off your other stuff. If Wemby is cooking with whatever move then the defense has to do something different and that allows you to then playmake for your teammates.
6
u/banana_fart9000 5h ago
The problem with analytics is that these numbers work in the regular season but completely fall apart in the playoffs. Defenses are tighter, refs don’t blow the whistle as much and most importantly teams adjust to their opponents. The team that manages to score consistently even if it’s at a lower efficiency is the one that wins most of the times.
2
u/BakerAnxious3440 3h ago
the main thing is that the analytics are true only in the long run when outliers are less impactful, whereas in a short playoff series it becomes much less about what strategy leads to the highest numbers over a long sample size and high variance strategies have potential to defeat those regular season long run analytical strategies
1
1
u/CrissCrossAppleSos Spurs 3h ago
My issue with that is that the best regular season teams almost always perform extremely well in the playoffs. There are differences, for sure, but people act like it’s not still basketball. The Thunder and the Spurs were the two best teams in the league last year and made the conference finals. Much of the Knicks run was driven by things like OG Anunoby being a flamethrower from 3. The year before the big surprise team was the Pacers led by Hali who’s the most analyticsy guy ever
2
u/buzzcitybonehead [CHA] Cody Martin 6h ago
I don’t think it’s bad advice at its core, though. Wemby seems skilled and cerebral enough to not need to reduce himself to milking a go-to move. It still might help him build up his effectiveness on offense to lean on a few things that work rather than scan the massive database that is “options available to a 7-and-a-half foot, agile, physical anomaly” every time up the floor. Start from there and add back the complexity.
1
u/Middle-Welder3931 3h ago
I completely agree. Simplfy the game, then when his efficiency and effectiveness has increased, he can add back the alien stuff with a stronger foundation.
3
u/Whatsyourshotspecial Gran Destino 6h ago
This thinking is exactly what is making the NBA so damn boring to watch. Every game looks the same, there are no distinct play styles anymore because of analytics.

0

You should really watch some old series, teams always played the same. Except for a few short years in the mid 90s and mid 2000s
7
u/pretzeldoggo Kings 10h ago
Wemby can literally just rise up over a anyone. He just needs to get the ball on the high block - identify what the defense is doing - either face up to shoot or back down. Have a couple of counters but no one is blocking anything. The times where he is pushed out he is getting way too deep. And if they are getting physical run an action with a pick to the right spot and then clear the fuck out and let him go to work.
If he gets doubled, swing the rock. Only issue is Fox doesn’t work in this flow unless he can shoot 40% from 3 on the season. Same with Castle. Need 4 3 point shooters around Wemby for this to work
10
u/danjustin Nuggets 10h ago
This the problem with trying to analyze Wemby.
He has a below average jump shot (by league metrics). Just because he can get it off, doesn't make it a good shot.
Also backing down is no where near his game. He's a massive rhuman being that relies on agility and quickness...not brute strength.
These aren't just two things he can choose to do...(At least successfully).
To LAs point...he probably needs to develop a sky hook (just a simple hook shot for him), because he can get always get the ball in the post, and no one can guard the hook shot.
If he just did that ten times a game, he would probably average 30ppg. But it does seem Wemby is either wanting to dunk the ball, or utilize one of the 18 moves in his head, instead of just taking the easiest two points possible.

4
u/VeniceRapture Spurs 10h ago
Well he's either not listening or they're not telling him cause he's still playing the same way he did in his 2nd year - trying to dribble and iso through two defenders.
It would be one thing if he's experimenting out there trying to find whatever that move is, but he's not even doing that.

u/ArgentoFox 8h ago
They need to purposely run plays for him on the elbow and have him instantly rise up. If he has to bank it in like Duncan, so be it. But this loitering around the three point line tactic that he commonly falls into isn’t cutting it. Teams want him as far away from the glass as possible and he plays into it. Aldridge is right and one of Wemby’s go to moves shouldn’t be a three point shot.

I've thought and said before, it's like Wemby and his teammates and coaches have the in-built "gotta let him flex and show off his unique skills" mindset.
Once Wemby and everyone around him automatically go for the most efficient, boring option possible, they'll be unstoppable. Don't worry so much about the jump shots and off-the-dribble stuff. Just spam lobs until someone proves they can stop it. Who cares if it's easy or boring or not aesthetically pleasing?

It's time to reintroduce the one 🦵 fade back into the league, imagine Wemby doing that kind of sheningan.

Tell this to Evan Mobley too. He's obviously isn't as skilled as Wemby but he basically has the same problem. He's decent a lot of things on offense but he really doesn't have a go-to move. With his length and speed, he should have one move that's almost unstoppable. Instead he's out there overthinking every shot he can't dunk.

It's wild to me that Wemby doesn't consistently go to a mid-post baby hook or something similar.

is he implying that wemby needs to work on his "fundamentals"? also, it's the kobe thing right, like have a one-shot and then work on that shot until you perfected it, and then start adding to that shot.

Can someone explain the difference between a baby hook a skyhook? I want to be more informed on this subject.

I think the sky hook is when your arm is like as far away from them as defender as possible. Like your doing the Y in the ymca dance, but your front hand is helping create space where the back hand(with the ball) is behind you . Baby hook is way more guard able because the ball can kinda come up and over anywhere. Sky hook creates an almost un-guardable shot because the ball is basically as far away from the primary defender as possible, from gather to release

Great imagery on the Y hand positioning. I’ve seen videos of Kareem do it but I’m still impressed by your use of words.
What about the baby hook? What advantage does that shot have over the skyhook for someone to choose baby hook over skyhook? From your description, it sounds like the skyhook is a superior shot. (Anyone can answer. I’m not asking you specifically. Just curious.)

Skyhook is almost unguardable 1v1 but harder to actually make. Putting the ball away from your body also leaves it where it can get stolen by help defense.
Babyhook is a more reliable shot when you have an advantage over the defender so they don't block it.

Here's a go to move. Shoot over them since they can't block your shot. Develop a slow shot and if they jump, just go around.

He doesn’t have a go to move. He has 0 handles and he’s not a good shooter. He’s a 7’6 center hang in the post and get boards and put backs. He doesn’t even have a post game.

Fr. This kid Wemby's go-to move is to act like he got shot after miniscule contact

David Robinson and Timmy should be paid by the Spurs soley to have Wemby develop some post moves. No way he's winning MVP with go-go gadget arms as his go-to move.
Even a guy like Giannis who relies on his physical gifts has a near unstoppable spin move
