It honestly astounds me how many people don't know basic keyboard functions outside of ctrl+c, ctrl+v. It's not even a generational thing, because I know plenty of people my age who also don't know them.

You'd think with how much everyone uses computers, they'd know a little bit more about how to actually use them.

I've been running into this a lot with folks click-and-drag selecting single words/paragraphs with their mouse. I'll gently nudge them to double/triple-click and they look at me like I'm a wizard when it selects the entire word/paragraph.

(Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy to help teach! It just really stands out to me.)

How do you select specific blocks of text altogether besides cursor? Ctrl + shift + arrow? Ctrl+A? What can we do to make it more efficient than what the grader is doing in the vid?

Cursor is honestly the most intuitive way to do it, you could also shift up arrow -> ctrl c -> alt+tab -> ctrl v

But as parent commenter said, he has these essays in a folder and could legitimately just ask chat gpt to look at them independently and apply a rubric.

He shouldn't, but he could.

Any of what you just said is more efficient than using the laptop's track pad to select a full page of text

Computers are like cars. People know they work they just have no idea how.

I get that, but knowing how it works and knowing how to control it are two different things imo. Most driver don't know how their car works, but they at least know what all the buttons and levers do.

And what's worse is I've noticed some programs eschew the most common shortcuts because mouse.

I can't even get my coworkers to do ctrl+c/ctrl+v. They right click to get to copy/paste and trying to teach them anything else has been a futile effort.
