SPOILER ALERT Someone left their banana in the fridge at work. Not sure how long it's been in there.
No one noticed because it was on a middle shelf in the back and turned black.

At this stage of decay, the banana has skipped the banana bread phase entirely and gone straight to brewing its own artisanal penicillin.

I don't like banana bread. Leftover bananas get sliced, spread on a cookie sheet, and frozen like that. After they’re solid, I take them off the cookie sheet and put them in a ziplock bag. They're great for smoothies or general snacking.

I usually just chuck the whole banana in the freezer, and then when I'm making smoothies, I just chuck the whole frozen banana in there.

u/diablette 7h ago
I might try that. I got into this habit before I got a Vitamix and my previous mixer would just die in the presence of a large ice cube.

That is such a travesty, banana is honestly the only fruit I can't imagine having in my fridge and going bad, it's so easy to eat them

I laughed way harder at this than I should have lol
On a bright note, my husband loves overripe bananas. If they somehow make it past the overripe stage, they go in the freezer until I DO make banana bread.

Nah that’s (edit to add: a different type of) fungi.
As several antibiotics have been made from mold (like penicillin) I think this banana should be studied. A new antibiotic could be discovered.

→ More replies (1)40
u/Apropos_of 11h ago
Yes, you’re right, but the zombie-ant fungus is not a mold. It belongs to a specialized group of entomopathogenic (insect-killing) ascomycete fungi, specifically in the order Hypocreales.
Mold is a nice respectable fungi that doesn’t grow in brains and only makes you sick if you breathe it in or eat it unless you’re really immuno compromised.

I remember at my old job we had a crappy fridge that broke and ppl left their food in it for months, then one day I opened it, and it was covered and crawling in bugs, I think roaches, it reminded me of Silent Hill, lol.

WHY ARE STRAWBERRIES LIKE THIS? It’s like you get 10 minutes to eat them before they go bad.

Grocers enchant them with magical lasting dust, but its effects are only good on store property.

Wash them with diluted vinegar and dry them after a good rinse. This will help them last a little bit longer.

u/Chi_Law 9h ago
Put them in a tupperware with paper towels on the bottom and between layers of strawberries, placed in the fridge. I do this with berries from the farmers market and they'll go weeks without molding or becoming otherwise inedible.
They do lose some moisture over time so they're still only at peak freshness for a couple days, but they'll stay good for a long time
→ More replies (1)10
u/workadvice7897 9h ago
I spend like 20 minutes inspecting them in the store to make sure they’re ok and they’re moldy by the time I get home! They’re the worst
→ More replies (12)9
u/battlehamstar 9h ago
And after washing you need to leave strawberries uncovered in the fridge. The box they come in or most containers will trap enough moisture to promote mold. Single layer on a plate would likely be the best

The mold got moldy, and then that mold gibt moldy, and then...
It's kind of amazing, I thought molds tend to release toxins to prevent other lifeforms from taking hold on their substrate.

28
u/_lucyquiss_ 12h ago
honestly, once they're ripe, bananas last much longer in the fridge. It's just me and my partner at home and we go through a bunch of bananas in two weeks together, but no way would it last that long outside the fridge.
