Don't hug me I'm scared Spent $120 on food while drunk. I don’t understand why drinking makes me hungry enough to eat anything and everything. Regretting my decisions and feeling extremely sick
on normal days I don’t eat more than one meal a day but when I drink a few drinks I can eat like 5 buffets. now I’m $120 poorer, drunk, and my stomach is killing me. yes this is my own fault, I’m infuriated purely at myself and nobody else.
I wish I didn’t get soooo hungry while drinking, I think I need to not drinks I’m a 21 year old girl going out solo in hopes of what lol?
edit- for everyone saying this wasn’t $120…I got 2 cocktails, chicken wing dip, loaded nachos, mac and cheese, 16 wings/fries with 5 cups of blue cheese, and a cookie skillet with ice cream for dessert.
edit 2- currently 7am. I got home around 2am, watched x files, then fell asleep. Now I woke up and am struggling to fall back asleep but also having a wicked stomach ache. Also, to everyone saying I have a drinking problem, I get 1-2 cocktails maybe once or twice a week, but I also get drunk very quickly. I don’t drink at home or anything like that, just when I’m out. anywho I don’t think I’m an alcoholic I’m just a pig.i do think there’s worse things I could do while drinking, I don’t get angry or cause issues I just eat and cry.
edit 3- food breakdown as followed-
- 16 wings plus fries- $28
- first cocktail- $12
- second cocktail- $14
- side of mac and cheese - $7
- bison nachos- $14
- buffalo chicken dip- $12
- cookie skillet with ice cream - $6
- extra blue cheese: $5 Total- $98 plus tax plus tip so yeah. tip your servers guys
edit 4- I drink and eat so I can forget the only man I’ve ever truly loved, yet it doesn’t work because how much must I spend in order to not remember? With that being said, I gotta sober up and feel better because a friend of mine is taking me to a singles event tonight (not like love will ever exist for me again but I get to dress up)
im not an alcoholic for having a few drinks 😭😭 i also don’t have an ed. Stop diagnosing me off one post

There’s actually multiple reasons. First of all, alcohol drops your blood sugar. Second, alcohol triggers the activation of a neuron that tells your body that you are starving and need food. Finally, alcohol also triggers the release of a hormone that tells your body you’re low on protein.
All of these combined can literally make you ravenous for food.
50
u/BloodyAngel2026 4d ago
Is that why when I'm hungover I feel an intense hunger all the next day?
71
u/VictoriousTree 4d ago
Yes that’s exactly why. Your body is completely thrown out of whack. It’s crazy how much stuff alcohol affects in your brain and body.

We’re similar then. For me, I don’t have much appetite in general and things that should stimulate my appetite usually just make me nauseous and even less hungry.
8
u/tryyeezus 4d ago
Same here.
Drunk or sober me would've looked at that mountain of food and entirely lost my appetite no matter how starving I was previously.
Why am I like this?
292
u/erwaro 4d ago
My perspective is skewed as all hell, but maybe you're just extremely hungry always and alcohol takes away your ability to ignore that?
51
50
u/AdSpecific3089 4d ago
The issue is, I don’t get hunger cues typically. I can go all day without eating and be just fine till I feel I’m on the verge of passing out and remember that I need food. Eating is a chore and something I have to remember to do most days. I usually end up eating just a meal a day
43
u/J_EDi 4d ago
I totally get that part about “eating is a chore”
I’m twice your age and struggled with this for a long time. Find some things that are nutritious but easy to consume. They make adult squeeze snacks. Apple sauce packets. Protein drinks (I’m lactose intolerant and they make full veggie/fruit ones)
Feed your body, even if it means keeping a timer. It will thank you.
4
u/Agile_Engineering759 4d ago
I am the same way and it is mostly likely my ADHD. Brain is so distracted (from everything including hunger cues) that I don’t think about food until I’m extremely hungry. You are probably not eating enough during the day which is causing you to overeat once the alcohol hits. I was the same in college, would barely eat during the day then maxxxx once I was drunk. Spend a bunch of money on food I couldn’t even remember. It might not be an intentional eating disorder but it is disordered eating and better to work on now rather than later in life. Change is tough but you can do it!
→ More replies (1)8
u/OcculticUnicorn 4d ago
You probably trained yourself by accident to not get hunger cues by not eating enough. Your body eventually just stops asking. Keep multiple timers and eat small things. Yoyr health will thank you.

Sure, binge eating can be because someone has restricted food for too long, but it can also be an act of self-soothing.
And alcohol can lower your defences. I'd often binge after taking edibles. It wasn't just "normal" munchies. It was a reaction to stressors in my life that I didn't realize were there.
250
u/UrACutiePatootie 4d ago
Huh. Interesting angle. I’m not trying to arm chair analysis but maybe general anxieties limiting appetite? I do know one meal a day likely isn’t enough so maybe there’s something there

disordered eating is often connected to emotions - anxiety, excitement, helplessness, sadness, anger.
food (abundance or limiting) can make you feel numb, give you a rush, feel like you have control, can help you feel celebrated.
It could be something else, but what she described is not a healthy relationship with food.
57
u/migsmog 4d ago
From experience with both alcoholism and disordered eating, your take is consistent with my experience. Delay eating for as long as possible because of feeling anxious, turns to drinking to calm nerves and take mind off ‘things’ (including hunger), leads to feeling uninhibited and free, thus binging and excessive spending. The solution for me is not wallowing in despair and being consistent about eating healthfully, so that I can remain lucid and continue to make better decisions
→ More replies (2)28
u/urbancrier 4d ago
Yeah, the relationship between vices is wild. Noticing pattens is super helpful.
Binge eating is often on a cycle of restrict -> binge. Mixing in alcohol really intensifies the cycle, but also sometimes gives people an "out" on the binge. Like it was not their fault and they are a "good" healthy eater who has a good relationship with food.
and not wallowing in despair is sometimes easier said then done - take care of yourself!
34
u/DothrakAndRoll 4d ago
From an alcoholics perspective, I think all the calories from tequila and beer tricks my body into thinking it has food.
I start drinking in the morning and suddenly something happens like BODY NEED FOOD around 2 pm and I’ll eat whatever is in the fridge. Then at like 10 PM I’ll order something terrible and repeat the cycle.

One of the things I noticed about my anxiety is that it takes up so much of my mind space that there’s no room for hunger cues. So I’ll go all day without eating, before my body is finally like “wake up, stupid!” Then I binge.
Not exactly disordered eating, but definitely not healthy. Once I started getting my anxiety under control I was able to eat more normally. I definitely have to make a point to schedule meals because my body is just used to running on fumes. My hunger and thirst cues are still out of whack from years and years of subsisting on anxiety and air.
25
u/FishDawgX 4d ago
There have been studies done that show people eat more when they drink alcohol.
The reason given is alcohol lowers inhibition, so when a person might usually tell themselves not to eat too much or not to eat unhealthy bar food, the alcohol reduces that response and you instead end up impulse eating.
Not sure if this is OP’s situation. It’s definitely true for me. I can normally resist eating junk food and excessive snacking, but alcohol breaks my self-control.

I agree with this, not to diagnose. However I actually am diagnosed with anorexia and when it was being addressed my doctor did ask me "do you eat less so you can drink more?" So in my opinion eating just one meal a day and binging while inebriated is most likely connected to a bad relationship with food.
My ex best friend used to take Xanax and then eat practically everything in the kitchen.
19
u/Electrical-Lead9621 4d ago
I’ve done that not eat anything to catch alcohol calories then binge eat while drunk 😪😪😪. Easy to form a bad relationship with food just having traits of a disorder without have the full disorder same with many mental health conditions.

This is not true lol I eat more than enough, with physical proof (fat) and when I drink I get ravenous. Alcohol itself activates the hypothalamus which induces hunger. Has nothing to do with what your regular diet is like.
19
u/krippkeeper 4d ago
Alcohol also disrupts liver function which is one of the things that tell you when you are full.
10
u/M8C 4d ago
I’m the exact opposite. I can feel starving but if I drink two or three beers before eating I won’t want to eat food the rest of the night.
4
u/openlightYQ 4d ago edited 4d ago
I’m the same way, if I start drinking I just won’t be hungry the rest of the evening at all. If I drink for a whole day/evening, I won’t be hungry that day or the next and have to force myself the next evening, no cravings for greasy food or snacks or anything.
Same reason I don’t touch my wine until after dinner if people are having wine with dinner, it’ll ruin the dinner, I just have to drink water until I’ve finished eating.→ More replies (2)49
u/urbancrier 4d ago
Yes, the catalyst for bingeing is probably the alcohol
However, her pattern seems to be consistently never eating more than one meal, and then weekly drinking and bingeing on thousands of calories. this is a predictable pattern, and one to flag as disordered eating.

15
u/AdSpecific3089 4d ago
To clarify, I often don’t get proper hunger cues. Eating too early makes me feel sick and then I usually skip lunch so I’ll eat usually late at night when I feel on the verge of passing out and remember I haven’t ate all day. I dunno why it is but my body tells me I’m hungry when I wonder why I’m feeling so off versus just normally feeling hungry.
But, when drinking it’s like all I can think about is food, more food than I can possibly eat on a regular day.

For about $10 or less this is my breakfast all week.

I do it because I work too much. I’m not healthy nor doing it for a diet, it’s just a bad habit picked up in grad school. Cook/eat/cleanup, once a day like a chore. Or like feeding a pet. I don’t even respect myself enough to have a set mealtime. I just wait until I’m starving and I’m forced to get it done.

Did you actually say you drink and eat to forget the only man you’ve ever truly loved? I don’t want to be too forward but you are 21 years old, please get a grip. If you’ve gone through a lifetime of loving or trying to love people then okay maybe more understandable, but you’re 3 years out of high school I mean come on. Just a tiny bit dramatic
Edit: I should have included that I do hope you feel better soon, apologies for being a little insensitive but I just hope you know there’s more than enough time to find someone else, dont throttle your life by saying “I’ll never find another love like this” when you have plenty of time to. Try pacing yourself with water. (At least) One glass with every alc beverage. Also have something in your stomach before you start imbibing.
Alcohol is processed by the liver quickly which can cause blood sugar levels to drop, this is known as hypoglycemia. Because glucose is utilized by our brain as a primary energy source a sharp dip would trigger the needs for fast energy. This is where you are now craving salty, fatty and or high carb foods. Worse, because of the alcohol you're not going to make the best decisions with food choices.
Another sub I participate in is for Diabetes. Had you posted there, you would be warned to tread carefully and try to pace your consumption of alcohol because type 2 is possible.
But address the hurt from your relationship. Most people don't and use other cope methods.

It's very interesting looking back and thinking about time and money saved from not drinking. I use an app that helps roughly calculate it and in the 6 and a half years I've been sober I've saved $73,440 and had 36,720 hours of my life back. That's a conservative number for what I would have spent on alcohol too (also not accounting for inflation) and not including random food splurges/impulse decisions like this one.

I can't even eat an entire meal over the course of the day most times. It's a legitimate medical issue. I mostly survive on nutritional shakes.
Get a few drinks in me and I'll push past the discomfort and actually EAT.
By the time I wake up the next day, my food is still sitting partially digested in my stomach but I can usually keep it down, and by the day after that it's moved along enough that I'm not so uncomfortable.
Drinking is not awesome, but it's how I've managed to choke down more than Nurri for a while now. Occasionally it's nice to pig out and go all out.

Figuring out your limit and hovering below that might help quite a bit since you're going out solo.

I started seeing someone recently who is sober and I haven’t been drinking at all. Could just be I’m happy because I’m enjoying a new thing, but I dunno, this is the longest I’ve gone without drinking in probably 15 years and I kind of feel pretty good

I slowly stopped drinking for no particular reason and now I have maybe 2 drinks a month with my dad
I don't feel any different in my everyday life but when I see hangovers portrayed in media it gives me this weird anxious reaction, then relief knowing I'm not going to feel like that
I just remember hangovers feeling horrible and I never want to experience that again 😂

Alcohol lowers blood sugar and makes the body prioritize digestion of ethanol.
Your brain reads this as hunger.
Alcohol also reduces impulse controll and frontal lobe activity.
Your brain goes hungry? Eat all the tasty things, and doesn't even stop to consider consequences.

Can nobody on this sub take a joke ? She got drunk and ordered a bunch of food, she made a post to make fun of herself, it’s really not that serious, we’ve literally all been there

If you get really drunk after just one or two drinks, you might be missing an enzyme that converts alcohol from a toxin to a not-toxin. I have that, but it didn't really start hitting me until I was in my late 20s. I ended up quitting alcohol entirely in my mid 40s, and only then did I find it what it was. (Not from any specific tests, just from reading about it.) Aside from being a cheap drunk, the most common symptoms are your face turning red and feeling mild to moderate flu-like symptoms. It's called "alcohol flush syndrome" if you want to find out more about it. It's one of the most common causes of esophageal cancer, so it's good to be aware (it takes many many years of ignoring the symptoms, though, so don't panic).

Drinking impairs judgement that’s why. You may have been a little hungry but really only needed like some French fries

You don't have a drinking or eating problem. You have a loneliness problem.

u/urbancrier 4d ago
These things are related - people abuse food and alcohol because to control loneliness, exhaustion, worthlessness, anxiety, sadness, etc. addiction doesn't start in a bubble

This is exactly why I only do cocaine when I drink. And I only smoke when I do cocaine. And I drink too much.

Impulse control bro. Learn it today or learn it 10 years later while suffering from more than just a simple hangover.
I took the 2nd option. Got taught the lesson instead of learning it myself.

Hey friend, I also went through a life-path-altering breakup some 6 years back and did a lot of this kind of thing. It turns out that I needed therapy and talking to a professional who wasn’t interested in enabling me was REALLY helpful.
Take care. Breakups suck. Liver failure and T2D sucks worse so don’t ignore this for too long.

You don't understand?
Allow me to essplain.
Drinking ruins your impulse control and activates lizard brain impulses.
Drinking fucking sucks.
Oh and a hangover is the sac surrounding your brain mass being dehydrated by the alcohol that poured right past your blood brain barrier and made your brain sac sag against your fuckin grey matter. Which you can feel.
Fuck alcohol lol.

This is colourful nonsense. No one really knows what a hangover is. Dehydration is definitely involved, but it’s not dehydrating the sac and the brain has no pain receptors so it’s not this.

It's because of a chemical released in your brain called galanin when you drink alcohol.
It's what makes you crave high-fat foods when you're drunk. High-fat foods also releases more galanin which often makes people overeat when they're drunk.

Why does it make us hungry? Because drunk brain thinks the stomach is a bottomless pit and the wallet is a myth.
