I just wanted a hot dog Kids wrecked the hot tub
I think this is truly mildly annoying - no huge deal but frustrating.
So I just did a three day work trip ending in a 4 hour flight in a middle seat and then a 2 hour drive home from the airport.
I was really looking forward to jumping in the hot tub. For a quick bit of relaxation.
Well, see photo - my kids (16 and 12) had decided to first spread an entire bottle of concentrated dish soap on a slip and slide and then while still soapy jump in my hot tub.
Cue me getting home, eating dinner, and excitedly retreating to change into my suit only to discover that nope, tonight I'm draining my hot tub, rinsing it and the filter out, and then sitting by while it refills so I can get the heater back on and hopefully have a soak in the morning.
Edit: the kids did help wipe up the tub and clean the area - but I'm not keeping them up late just to wait for it to fill and turn the heater on.

And they arenāt kids. They should know better by now not to mess up the hot tub.
If they werenāt taught at 12 and 16 then there are bigger issues lol.

The edit kinda makes sense. They had to do the initial clean up. But if OP is staying up til 3 am because they have to sit around and wait for it to drain, I think it seems spiteful to make the kids wait for that. If it was an evening task, hell yeah make them participate. But I think the clean up and the lecture about having to clean it out in the middle of the night so he could use it in the morning makes sense here.
Also, them doing that is dumb, but not unfathomably dumb for 12 and 16. They didn't put something in the tub, they obviously know not to do that. But they might not have realized they can't get in the tub covered in soap, that it would be just as bad. I kind of half-understand the ignorance there. It would be the kind of thing a parent would stop them from doing if they were present, but they might ignorantly do when unsupervised.

Tbf I had no idea soap was bad for hot tubs until just now. Then again my family has never owned one. Was never particularly close with anyone who owned one and can count the amount of times I have been in one on my hand. And 4 of those were probably in hotel swimming areas as a kid.

u/Inconceivable76 25d ago
All soap is bad for hot tubs. It foams. Itās why you should rinse off before you get in the hot tub and why guests that donāt extra rinse gets their suits rinsed first.
its like hot tub 101 if you own one.

My dad was making boiled peanuts in a big pressure cooker in the garage. Apparently the release valve got clogged so he just left it for several hours.
Cue to later, comes back, still can't be opened, assumes its just jammed, and uses a crowbar to wedge it open. Of course he told no one he was doing this.
So everyone in the house just hears the sound of a gunshot going off, my dad freaking out, and steaming hot peanuts flying across the entire yard.
He was fine but it blew the lid of the pressure cooker right through the ceiling of our garage.
Big cartoon ass hole in it. Piles of peanuts steaming around the whole yard, like 30-40 feet away.EDIT: wow this blew up. To answer some common questions:
No he wasn't hurt. No permanent hearing loss.
He thought it was hilariously funny after the fact and still laughs about it to this day.
Dude screamed and ran out the garage.
Yes, always be very careful with a pressure cooker, they are literally bombs.
He could have been grievously burnt/hurt, luckily it is a funny story and not a tragic one.636

We did that with a 6 foot propane cylinder on the beach. Built a BIG (like 30 foot high flames) bonfire and two of us chucked it into the fire. Never ran so fast in my life. 10 minutes later there's this impossibly low THUD in our chests and the tank is flying out over the Pacific. Then we looked down, and our 1 giant bonfire was now about 50 bonfires, all over the beach in every direction. It took us hours to put them all out.

Hahah when we were about 14 my friends and I decided to build a sparkler bomb with a steel pipe instead of a tennis ball. We capped off both ends and drilled a hole for a fuse to come out, and in our young minds all of the wonderful sparkler magic would shoot out of there too.
Well we set it all up, capped it all off, and placed it on a mates dad's trailer so it was on stable, non-flammable ground. We lit the fuse and waited for the show to start. Turns out if you place a bunch of sparklers in a tight space with nowhere for that energy to go you've just created an IED, something that a bunch of 14 year olds definitely didn't have the life experience to know. The steel pipe blew a hole in the trailer and shot a few bits of shrapnel out but luckily no one was hurt. My mates dad wasn't too impressed and we never made and IED again.

I know so many people who just threw random things in bonfires that did not belong in bonfires in the early 2000s, so this was not surprising. So many burnt couches. Teen behavior around fires is just unpredictable, but always involves putting something dumb in a fire.

My grandpa used to throw the fireworks that didnāt go off into the bonfire at the family 4th of July. There were some flying ones that went off and flew out of the fire and at the people sitting around it. Watching people scramble out of lawn chairs and dodge them was something. My grandma (70s I think I the time) did an impressive tumble, roll, and pop back up. She missed rolling into the fire or chairs. It had leveled off at her about shoulder blade height and she couldnāt outrun it. He had to be told to stop after that, as he was still doing it. Same night. Moments later.

Nice story brother but unless you welded the release valve shut it definitely would NOT explode.
Source: Ive put all lot of dumb shit in fires. Propane tanks ALWAYS just become a flamethrower for a while, but they do make a loud bang randomly when the fire goes out and everything cools allowing it to sorta āimplodeā on itself from pressure. (This doesnt happen every time)
Now a can of beans on the other hand⦠ole son you better hope you arenāt in the way when them beans explode and coat everything within 30 feet in steaming hot beans.

My sister opened a pressure cooker that was making potatoes without venting it. Mashed potatoes everywhere. 5 years later my parents moved and still found blobs of it in cracks and crevices.
98
u/FourLeafClover1997 25d ago
You can open one without releasing the pressure? Mine simply won't open!
117
u/SnipesCC 25d ago
Sounds like a safety feature that one built in the 70s didn't have.
63
u/FourLeafClover1997 25d ago
It opens from the inside. So it's basically impossible to open if pressure exists.
I just looked up the older versions, that's basically a cap on top of a container. No wonder it used to blast open a lot more frequently
50
40
u/EndIsrael 25d ago
The old ones are just a metal pot with a locking lid that has a pressure gauge and relief valve. However, when under pressure, it should be pretty hard to remove the lid since the pressure inside is pushing upward on the lid, adding tons of friction to the locking tabs around the edge.

When I was 13 a friend and I lit a mason jar filled with gas on fire on a set of wooden steps and when it burned a lot longer than I expected we poured a glass of water into it which shattered the glass spilling burning gas under the deck and doing some pretty significant damage. Luckily there was a pile of leftover 2x6s from building the deck and a chop saw and my friend and I replaced all of the burnt pieces before my mom got home from work as a bar tender. I never got caught, but looking back on it it was so much sketchier than it seemed at the time.

u/iDoWeird 25d ago
I was in middle school when the first film came out, so the original novel ended up as an assignment in either my eighth or ninth grade English class. My mom always assumed anything I read was age appropriate (TV and music she was always paranoid about) so she didnāt bat an eye at first. Then something came on TV that made her ask (prob an ad for the movie landing at Blockbuster or a sequel trailer), so I did the only reasonable thing I could think of. I made up an elaborate, cliche g-rated synopsis on the spot and said that it was about kids who only ever saw each other at summer camp and something about learning about the depths of friendship through the years with some side plot bc I felt like the bogus summary wasnāt convincing enough as isā¦so it needed some classic young adulthood drama to give it some oomph and connect it somehow to the title (as a titular line, natch!) bc that was what she was focusing on. So I added a bit about how when they went back home after camp ended each year, their regular year-round friends felt left out, so out of jealousy from worrying that their friend liked their summer friends more than them, theyād always act like they knew of some big embarrassing thing that happened during that past summerās camp so the leader of the friend group would repeatedly prod them by saying āohā¦[so-and-so/main character name] I know what you did last summerā until that friend got so sick of it that they decided not to ever have non-summer camp friends ever again until everyone ended up going to that same summer camp the final summer before they aged out and became high school seniors and all became one giant friend groupā¦..so in the end, the last thing they knew what they did last summer was learning that everyone mattered no matter who went to camp or on vacation where and that friendships CAN survive a three-month gap!
Thank fuck she didnāt ask me how I knew the ending before I even got halfway through the book š¤¦āāļø. If it were anyone elseās ma, Iād reflect and say āshe knew all along what the book was about and just played along to see how creative I could get with it,ā but my mother wasā¦uh, uncommonly dense and disconnected from pop culture. Even things that were omnipresent during her twenties until I popped out in her mid thirties. Like, when Bowie died she had no idea who everyone was mourning, and that same time she only said āthe name is kinda familiarā after Prince passed. Movies or books? Donāt even attempt to see if something massive from her youth rings a bell. Ffs, last MONTH she texted me asking if I ever heard of āsome guy named Stingā and that he seemed like a decent musician š¤£

When I was 16 I stole my mom's brown small car, with my best friend, drunk on years old forgotten peach schnapps, and I eventually rode it up a median with all 4 tires off the ground. How odd! At 15 or 16, I was driving home from school, different town don't ask, and I accidentally shifted from 5th to second, missed 4th don't ask, and literally blew up the engine of my 80s VW Jetta. I had to get towed home and since I would have actually been in trouble had I called a tow truck, I had to call my dad to tow me the last half mile. Turns out when you do that to a 4 cylinder diesel it imprints the valves on the cylinder head and shoots the connecting rod through the cylinder wall. Dad found a good deal on a used engine with a turbo so I had almost 40 hp!

When I was 16 I lit a fire on the railroad tracks just to watch it burn it caught a fence on fire which was creeping up to the roof of a house so we ran and called the fire department. The cops asked who called the fire department I raised my hand. The next day I was in the newspaper. You didn't mean to but you still did. And because of that you have to fix it.
Doesn't mean you have to be yelled at or belittled. Shit happens. Later in life this will happen and its best you know how to handle it.
Good parenting moment for your folks and glad you learned something positive from it. Parents should hold their kids responsible.
30
u/14Knightingale27 25d ago
I really appreciate this comment. So often parents are caught up in (honestly pretty fair) frustration that the first instinct is to make their kids fix it as punishment. But really it's important to know how to fix a fuck up of any kind. If they don't know, teach them how, and let them clear the mess they made. Good life skill later in life to know messes can be cleaned up and also figure out that there's some stuff you should not do lmao.

When my kids were in elementary, two of them (son and youngest daughter) used to climb onto the bottom bunk bed and use their body weight to force the end of the mattress down in between two of the wooden slats underneath. I have no idea why they did this and to this day they have no idea why they did it either. Anyway I kept telling them (at increasing volume over time) to stop doing that because they were going to rip the mattress. Then I'd walk into their room and see the end of the mattress hunched over and crammed down between the slats, like "God damn it...KIDS!! COME HERE!"
Anyway it finally happened, the mattress ripped on its side, and the rip spread the whole way down its length and around one end. I was so exasperated and annoyed with the two of them. I got my sewing kit and made them sit down and watch me thread two needles. They were so surprised when I handed them the needles and told them they were about to learn how to sew. They started at opposite ends of the rip and slowly worked their way towards each other. Took like 90 minutes (not counting breaks), they were very proud of themselves afterward, and they both said they liked learning to sew, but they were finally cured of the desire to do that shit anymore. And I got a couple of funny photos of them patiently stitching a mattress back together.
Definitely let the kids help fix their own mistakes whenever possible rather than doing it for them. They learn more that way.

I had the reverse experience of this when I was around 16. My dad told me to do yard work with him on a hot day, and I went to put some ice in a water bottle before I went outside. I found his forgotten can of Coca Cola that he stashed in the freezer that morning, and it had spewed EVERYWHERE. It was one of those side-by-side freezer/fridges, so everything in the freezer side was sprayed down by the cokesplosion, including the walls and door panel. I told him that I'd clean it all up if he didn't make me come out to do yard work and he took my offer.

Hello from a former child who wrecked the hot tub! Ā One lovely cold Midwest winter about 30 years ago my friend and I were enjoying a hot tub in the snow and me being a responsible kid turned it all off after using it. Ā Including the heater. Ā Hot tub didnāt make it through the night, but in true parent form my dad said this. Ā āIt made it 15 years and god know how much alcohol has been through these filters. Ā It was on its last legs and was one repair away from getting removed. Ā Your punishment is to take apart the deck, Iāll take care of the tub.ā Ā At that time I was a shiā¦hellraiser, so called my buddy Cole, told him we get to take down the deck. Ā Two sawzalls, two sledgehammers, two surges and two hours and that deck was gone. Ā Long story short, I love my Dad.

You are going to have them drain, clean, and refill it, right? Theyāre old enough for that chore/task/consequence.

When my kids made a mistake, they had to fix it. Tore a window screen? They fixed it while I watched. Anything they messed up, they cleaned up/fixed. Make your kids fix what they messed up. They are too old to be this destructive without consequences.

If it does you any good, genuinely try to imagine being 12 or 16 with your sibling and having a dish soap slip and slide and hot tub party. Iām with you, itād peeve me to no end to know I earned a good soak just to discover that mess. But when my kids do this kind of stuff I learned from someone much wiser to try hard to get in my mental Time Machine and go back to that age and imagine how I wouldāve wanted my dad to react. Good on them for helping clean. Mildly infuriating for sure. But they mustāve had a blast.

When i was a teenager i had friends over when my mom was out of town. We were in the hot tub and then all of a sudden one of the guys was pouring dish soap in. There were bubbles all across the patio and i was pissed and terrified. I don't know how but the bubbles dissipated by the time she was back and she never noticed. I told her about 10 years later and showed her the pictures.

Man, I feel like I was a good kid. My dad, on the other hand, set off a hotel fire alarm by smoking weed in the bathtub.

Reminds me of my first job. I worked at a health club and we had hot tubs in each locker room. They had their own separate little rooms in the locker room that the hot tub was in. One of the members came to the front desk and told me I should go check out the one in the men's locker room. I go in and open the door to the hot tub room only to be met with a wall of foam. The entire room was filled with suds. Well, one of our guests, who was mentally disabled, took the shampoo from the shower and made his own bubble bath. It took me hours to drain and rinse that shit

Rubbing alcohol kills soap. It might make the clean up a lot less messy and quicker

I did this at a hotel on vacation with one of my friends on a family trip. We thought it was hilarious. My dad was pissed but somehow the manager of the hotel had a sense of humor about it.
We didnāt get charged for the cleaning bill which was nice of them. I feel bad about it 20 years later

Edit: the kids did help wipe up the tub and clean the area - but I'm not keeping them
up late just to wait for it to fill and turn the heater on.
Harsh but justified... (just kidding)

When I was a teen my friend put liquid dish soap into his parents hot tub because I said I wanted bubbles.
The bubbles went all the way into his parents bedroom.
I've no idea how he explained it or even hid what happened!

I bet those kids had the BEST sibling time going wild on that slip 'n slide knowing they were home alone and got to do ANYTHING.
Sounds like good, reckless kid decisions though irresponsible, and also still good on you for knowing it could have been worse.
Glad they did help clean up also.
All good fun ends well.

I know it could be too late but there is a chemical called defoamer I use it in my day to day jobs and clean up soap everyday. Using just a cap full knocks out all the bubbles in a mop bucket and prevents any from showing up. Just saying it could be worth a try.

Its actually really interesting seeing both sides of the comments. I would have expected 15 hell even 10 years ago it would universally be āthese kids should stay up all night to cleanā based on the comments its about 60-40 to ādonāt yell at the childrenā.
I wonāt pass judgement but I do find it interesting how society changed and children are raised a lot more softer these days.

Whatās odd to me is some people treating having the kids clean the mess they made as punishment. That should be considered a basic part of living as a human, so they should learn it. Itās a teaching opportunity! āI hope youāve had your fun with the tub. Iād like to use it too, so now I need you to do x y z to clean it.ā

They don't need to be yelled at. They know they messed up. But they should be helping clean it at the least.
It's the weekend so I doubt they have school tomorrow. They can boot up some video games and take filling and draining it

Lmao this is not wrecked, it's just a deep clean. Bad timing though for sure lol. But could've been much worse. I expected $$$$ repairs or replacement based on your title but then that would be extremely infuriating and not mildly infuriating.
What was their punishment or reward for the deep clean? š«§

This is why I will never want to own a hot tub; maintenance nightmare.
Edit: Lots of people comparing hot tub to kids, but I'd compare it to something more relevant like a jacuzzi tub - you don't have to worry about water chemistry, keeping it covered, heating energy bills, etc.

I find it really worth it. But I have sciatica and my wife has had two total knee replacements (she was airborne, messed her knees and hips up). If you're not getting therapeutic value from it then yes, it is a lot of upkeep to keep it all set up clean.

I have widespread small fiber neuropathy. Hot tub is a good relief. Especially in winter. Ours has been little maintenance. Balances pretty easily and stays there.
Cleaning sucks, but it's only 2 to 3 times a year. We don't use it much in the summer though.

Maybe an old beater tub but a new salt tub with a $100 Taylor kit has never been easier. Drain and fill once a year on lighter user, twice if we use more. Test it once or twice a week and a small dose of liquid chlorine after each use and thatās it. If I have a party or heavy kid load, bring up the chlorine to 10ppm for 24 hours. Itās actually easy once you get the hang of it. Having said that, it took me a winter to get the hang of it.

A lot of soaps float above water so if you put a hose in at the bottom and had water spill over the top it would probably get rid of most of the soap without having to drain it

For next time you could possibly get away with a spa defoamer liquid, depending on how much got in. We also use this for people who think dawn is okay in a dishwasher š

I had to double check the ages because everyone in the comments is saying you're too hard on them because they don't know better.
The 16 year old was old enough to know not put dish soap in a hot tub. Come on now. They aren't a goo goo gah gah baby at 16.

When I was off on a trip my kid claimed one of his friends got diarrhea in the hot tub. He asked how to drain it.
Later he admitted they spilled the bong.
