Brand new…. I didn’t expect my deodorant to have more air than a bag of chips… won’t be getting this again.

Dr Squatch used to be a great brand…now their shit sucks since selling out. Im glad they’re getting sued

I bought a bar of their soap and I was excited to use it until all of this color started running off the soap which i've never seen before and I had brown splotches in my tub. I'm a soap guy and like to use nice stuff but i've found dr bronners is best of all and I always go back to it as my go to.

I got a box from Costco and it painted my tub black. It’s absolutely terrible soap with a great marketing team.

The pine tar soap has always been like that… pine tar is black so the soap is black lmfao

And don’t lie that shit smells bomb- but I agree I didn’t like that I had rinse the whole shower each time cuz of it so had to switch lol

I heavily used a pine tar & sulphur soap in the 90s and it wasn't black. It's going to be brownish at worst. Black pine tar soap is usually dye.

I developed an irrational hated of pine tar as a child. And I am just trying to deal with the fact that people are trying to sneak it into my soap. There should be a law.

The concepts of soap and pine tar shouldn't exist simultaneously.

u/TriZARAtops PURPLE Sep 13 '26

It’s not really sneaking it when the scent with pine tar is called “Pine Tar.”

u/bsubtilis Sep 13 '26

Pine tar has been used as antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory wound treatment for multiple millennia which is why pine tar soap became a commercial product a bit less than two centuries ago. Pine tar soap has a long tradition of existing, but it absolutely should be extremely clearly marked.

I did not know that about it being pine tar soap and that’s why it’s left a residue.

I won’t lie, it didnt smell very good either. At least not when compared to other brands at similar price points. I’ve been buying premium bar soaps for a while and this soap didn’t smell much better than dial, especially after the shower. I just went back to buying Kiehl’s. Hell even Targets house brand, good fellow smelt better and a quarter of the cost.

Pine tar scent is an acquired taste, and pine tar soap being black is usually a dye. Pine tar is dark brown, not black. Soaps do not use so much pine tar that it naturally could be actually black.

edit: some soaps marketed as pine tar on the big print are only pine tar scented too, it will say in the details.

u/DriveFoST Sep 12 '26

I don’t think you should be eating any soap, especially not so much you get an acquired taste for it ;)

u/Zeta-2-Reticuli Sep 12 '26

Try Grandpa's. Sasquatch pine tar is terrible. I refuse to buy from that company because of how terrible this product was.

1

u/Raps4Reddit Sep 13 '26

I always thought it was the charcoal leaving the residue. I assumed it had activated charcoal in it.

u/Whind_Soull Sep 13 '26

I don't know how I ended up here, but Packer's Pines is great. I've used their sampoo, conditioner, and bar soap. Highly recommend.

1

u/DothrakAndRoll Sep 13 '26

Interesting. I have a weird stockpile when I thought I’d cancelled 4 times but kept getting batches. I’m gonna try an old pine tar bar. Sounds like they went way off the rails with their product, and it was always overpriced.

"Real" pine tar soap smells far smokier and almost like burning rubber at first, but it's brown and won't stain your tub. Personally I use it for my head, it makes my scalp less itchy.

Dr squatch imo smells like pine-sol (not a diss as I do like it), it is a "real" pine tar soap but also heavily toned down to be more acceptable to the mass market.

Both Grandpa's and Packer's Pine got mentioned, I love both, Grandpa's is generally more for less (3.25 oz for ~$5 vs ~$7 for 3.2 oz) but Packer's has a "pine tar scrub" with some mixture of scratchy bits that's more reminiscent of the dr squatch bar. Highly recommend either brand.

their pine tar USED to run brown, not black. i stopped using them before the sellout because their soap would breakdown in the shower much faster than any other i used. kept it out of hot water and dry until use. still was like a bar a week or every other week depending on the one used. Didn't lnow they sold out, but makes sense. tried their cologne once more to see if they got better, and that smell disappeared in minutes as well. they have never been a good company, just okay and expensive.

Kirkland Signature soap as well as shampoo/conditioner have never let me down

1

u/kkkhhjdyhrthhhjft Sep 12 '26

Marketing sucks now too lol

Hey! I used to use Squatch before they went full bad guy (first off, that black pine tar bar felt amazing but fuuuuuuck the soap scum making my shower black)... I ended up sourcing my soap from Bulk Apothecary to replace. Buying bulk but still solid enough soap. Hopefully that helps... (I'll look up dr. bronner in the mean time. Never heard of it, but always looking for good soap)

24

u/wolfblitzen84 Sep 12 '26

I'm looking up bulk apothecary as we speak ha. I'm surprised you haven't heard of dr. bronners before. I personally like the peppermint and lavender but disclaimer the peppermint will make your balls tingle a bit from the essential oils. Not sure if it has the same effect for everyone lol.

9

u/YikesPops Sep 12 '26

Keeping that in mind, but I'll for sure check it out! Prices suck lately for body products so always looking for best bang for buck

2

u/Composer-Glum Sep 12 '26

I always get arm & hammer body wash at dollar tree, good for toothpaste and other little things like that

2

u/OpiumPhrogg Sep 12 '26

I keep Dr Bronners orange or tea tree on hand.

2

u/HAIL_LUMPUS Sep 12 '26

You're always looking for soap and never heard of Dr bronners?

2

u/HobbyWanKenobi 27d ago

All of Dr bronner's products are amazing

1

u/lvl100hypno Sep 12 '26

I use the pine tar bar from The Black Stuff and don't have any tub dyeing issues!

1

u/Eleven11DJ Sep 12 '26

Cost us world market, and Trader Joe’s sell dr bronner! Costco carries it as well sometimes

1

u/Equivalent_Fun_4825 Sep 13 '26

I get Jojoba oil and meadowfoam seed oil from Bulk Apothecary to make my own beard oil with. I'll have to pick up some soap from them as well the next time I need to get some oil. Which of their soaps have you liked?

2

u/M4573RI3L4573R Sep 12 '26

Dr Bronners is the best brand ive ever used. Peppermint for shaving, tea tree for showering, Sal Suds for laundry. And its employee-owned. Great company, great product.

2

u/girl_supersonicboy Sep 12 '26

Omg this!

My roommate uses their soap religiously, and uses the black bars. My tub and the wall he hangs the soap on is almost always covered in a black stain line 😭

1

u/MrGrieves- Sep 12 '26

Caprinha goat's milk soap is a the best.

1

u/Lilmexican26o Sep 12 '26

Do u know if the shampoo is suppose to be super runny? I bought some on clearance and its like yellow water

1

u/Allegorist Sep 12 '26

I'd like to plug Hank Green's high quality charity soap:

https://good.store/collections/bar-soap-sun-basin

I'm not really one for fancy soaps, but if I were this is where is would get it. All profits go to actual, effective charities (not "charity" like a lot of companies). The whole store is basically just a fundraiser, their only cost is resupplying the products. Heard only good things about the quality too.

1

u/topherhead Sep 12 '26

I love Mistral but I'm currently unemployed and shouldn't be buying $15 bars of soap 🥲

1

u/FartingRaspberry Sep 12 '26

I was reluctant to try their soap because it was like 7 bucks a bar but bit the bullet and bought the coconut one to try. Shit barely lasts, I think I got maybe 3 showers out of it before it was a sliver. Very disappointed.

The Caress brand I normally buy lasts way longer and it's moisturizing and 10 dollars for 12 bars.

u/Fast-Prompt-3034 Sep 12 '26

I like my soap with a Bible print unibomber manifesto squeezed into the margins

1

u/purodirecto Sep 12 '26

Can be use to clean dishes, the bathtub, the car etc. I love using Dr Bonners with a scrub mommy. Gets me squeaky clean and refreshed.

1

u/SkyGuy182 Sep 12 '26

I really like Sterling Soap Company’s soaps! They have great shaving products as well.

1

u/binzersguy Sep 12 '26

I, too, always end up back at Dr Bronner’s! It’s the best, and I always question why I tried anything else.

1

u/TKLeader Sep 13 '26

I realize probably nobody has heard of it and wants to spend money on it. But my absolute favorite brand of soap is pre de provence soaps. I've been using them for almost 15 years. Their olive oil brick bar soap is awesome. I also love the sage and the Linden flower.

1

u/Scroatpig Sep 13 '26

Long live Doc Bronner!

1

u/parakeetshoes Sep 13 '26

Have you tried cheeky soap? I thought about trying a bar after the squatch sell out.

1

u/witblacktype Sep 13 '26

Dr Bronners is the GOAT

1

u/HearYouWhenYouScream Sep 13 '26

I like Dr Bronner for a liquid Castile soap. For bars and deodorant I like The Black Stuff.

1

u/Asstronomer6969 Sep 13 '26

Dr Bronners is hands down one of the best and one of the only true soaps on the market. Even safe on plants

1

u/Levaporub Sep 13 '26

Dr Bronners forever
