ಠ_ಠ This crazy assassin character, who doesn't know what shampoo is, somehow would bother shaving her armpits

My wife is 1/3 Native American and has next to no body hair. You wouldn't know it looking at her since the rest of her genes are nearly all Welsh (she's fucking PALE), but the lucky gal rarely shaves. On the flip side her poor brothers cannot grow a beard even though their dad has a red monstrosity.

u/spence5000 Aug 24 '26

Off topic, but how did she get that particular fraction?

21

u/CG_Ops Aug 24 '26

Genealogy is funny in that way due to dyadic rationals - meaning any fraction with a denominator that is not a power of 2 is mathematically impossible but, for simplicity, close enough...

Going back:

  • Parents: 1/2 from each
  • Grandparents: 1/4 from each
  • Great-grandparents: 1/8 from each.
  • Great-great-grandparents: 1/16 from each

So, with mixed combinations, if both parents have some in their DNA, you can get pretty damn close:

  • 3 generations - 5/16 or 31.25%
  • 4 generations - 11/32 or 34.375%
  • 5 generations - 43/128 or 33.594%

Rough number since it has been a decade since its last come up, but it was in the 30's. She did a genetic makeup test applying for a scholarship, but apparently she needed a family member on some sort of list. Her mother is a full half, her father is a smaller part from a tribe he has no affiliation with in Washington state.

Her mane was a sight to behold. Thick, black, and she grew it out so it reached her butt. Then came post-partum, thinning the hair and prompting her to trim it. It started to recover then we had another kid. It makes her sad sometimes, but at least she knows it'll come back after the kid is weaned.

u/Anna-Bombination Aug 24 '26

Welsh people are traditionally dark haired and dark complexion, more like Mediterranean and quite hairy

6

u/Mindless-Ninja-3321 Aug 24 '26

Some are, some aren't. The local Celtic gene pool has darker body hues compared to the Germanic groups, but it also has very fair locals too. Ireland has the same thing going on.

1

u/Deribus Aug 24 '26

1/3!?

So she has one grandparent and one great-great grandparent who are Native American? Or how does that approximation work?

5

u/Mindless-Ninja-3321 Aug 24 '26

I explained it in another comment, but basically yea. Her maternal grandmother was full blooded (or nearly)from a res. Her paternal grandmother was part from Washington state. Probably some more distant American Indian DNA in her grandfathers too with how the percentages worked out.

29

u/KinderEggLaunderer Aug 24 '26

Yeah I also dont have hair there, either. We exist.

3

u/1stAccountNotWorking Aug 24 '26

It happens. I'm a guy with very little pit hair...but I'm pretty normal everywhere else--decent chest hair, arms and legs have hair (though not very thick or noticeable, tbh); never really thought about it being weird or rare. I still dont think that it really is. I'm pretty sure ethnicity, and different hereditary wizardry affects this, more than anything.

46

u/esli- Aug 24 '26

I didn't know this could happen, thanks for informing me. I still think it would have being better to let the actress have armpit hair here, what do you think?

54

u/PaulClarkLoadletter Aug 24 '26

Even if she went full on Woodstock my wife wouldn’t have anything to show. Same for her legs. Some women just aren’t that hairy. It’s okay though. I’ve got more than enough for the both of us.

6

u/caks Aug 24 '26

Is your wife the actress

28

u/honeymilk-island Aug 24 '26

actress is probably lasered

54

u/StunnedLife Aug 24 '26

I don’t have armpit hair either. So who’s to say the actress grows armpit hair????

51

u/More_Passenger3988 Aug 24 '26

To be fair, almost all women who "don't have" hair on their legs and armpits actually do, but it's fine and light colored. It's much less likely someone with dark hair would be that way.

5

u/percyhiggenbottom Aug 24 '26

That applies to humans in general, we technically have more hair than furry animals but it's small and transparent peach fuzz mostly

2

u/More_Passenger3988 Aug 24 '26

No it is not general in humans to have transparent peach fuzz under the arms, on the legs, or head.

Someone who is blonde with fine hair may have very light transparent fuzz under their arms where it looks like they don't grow anything, but that's not common for those with darker hair.

u/More_Passenger3988 Aug 24 '26

Confused. Are you telling me to put the words "general" and "not common" in bold and italics?

0

u/Lazy_Marsupial Aug 24 '26

I have dark brown head hair, but have like a half dozen armpit hairs (which are dark, but so very sparse), very little arm hair only on my forearms, and only a bit of leg hair on my shins (also really dark). I have no idea why.

72

u/mollyxz Aug 24 '26

Regardless this is a common issue in media. The non hair growers have plenty of representation. Let's represent the majority of women as they naturally are, with armpit hair.

13

u/Don_Frika_Del_Prima Aug 24 '26

70s porn has got your back.

30

u/shartingmaster Aug 24 '26

Well I do have armpit hair as do most people. You’re an outlier here

-18

u/StunnedLife Aug 24 '26

Lol I’m as unrepresented in the media as hairy armpits, don’t even start to attack me for what I was born with.

I am very aware it’s common to have hairy armpits.

23

u/Aggressive_Sky8492 Aug 24 '26

I don’t think you are underrepresented

32

u/shartingmaster Aug 24 '26

Attack you? Every woman in every television show ever has hairless armpits

16

u/bigbobharven Aug 24 '26

You're exhausting

-2

u/2andahalfbraincell Aug 24 '26

If she didn't they should have given her fake ones idgaf.

10

u/StunnedLife Aug 24 '26

Now you’re just being dumb.

8

u/the_chiladian Aug 24 '26

Is it dumb for actors to use wigs and fake facial hair?

Why would it be different for women?

4

u/StunnedLife Aug 24 '26

Many people in this thread didn’t know there’s a world with humans who don’t grow armpit hair.

It’s as realistic as the person having armpit hair. What’s the big deal.

20

u/Ysisbr Aug 24 '26

The big deal is that women are constantly presented fully shaved in multiple settings where it doesn't make sense bc the men responsible for it think hair in women is too gross to look at even though it is as natural in us as it is in them.

-2

u/godlyjacob Aug 24 '26

I don't see how this is a men responsible situation when the casting department, art direction, makeup department, and the costume department were all headed by and made up almost completely of women. also the actress is a woman. unless you can prove that the director came in and was like shave that shit then I don't think you can blame the men in this situation.

6

u/Ysisbr Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Ok, is body hair disproportionally seen as gross and unhygienic when in a woman's body? Yes, I don't think you would even want to debate that.

Do hairy women in Hollywood have a harder time finding jobs and suffer more social scrutiny than hairy men? Again, i don't think you would debate that. If you would, try to remember from the top of head 2 Hollywood actresses who show their body hair and aren't mostly labeled as rebellious or weird. For hairy men i have Henry Cavill and Hugh Jackman. If you are a woman in this industry and want to pay your bills, you will have to shave it up or laser it down.

Do a lot of women give support to these systems? Yes, the same way some poc give support to racist ideas and some disabled people are ableist.

Yeah, a lot of women work in the costume and makeup department, who do they answer to and who has the final say? The director. In this case, a man.

Who set the system up?

Who are at the highest positions of power in the industry?

18

u/the_chiladian Aug 24 '26

Because it's not about the woman, it's about the character. It's far easier to show unkemptness with unshaved hair, just like it is for men

Many men also can't grow beards, but almost all media which have some guy stranded for an extended period have them with a straggly beard. Surely they can't all be real?

2

u/2andahalfbraincell Aug 24 '26

It looks fucking weird and most importantly it looks like she shaved it, because as you mentionned most people do not even know it's a possibility. So it says something about the character that is untrue and confusing, it's just bad storytelling.

If you're an actress who naturally has lips that look like you surgery on it you still cannot play 18th century people, even if it's your real lips, because it looks silly.

I don't know why it seems so hard to understand that on TV how things look is more important than what they are. And this character looks like she shaved so it doesn't matter wether it was natural (highly unlikely btw) or shaved (the real answer in all probability)

I did notice while watching and I thought "ugh fucking cowards not giving her armpit her. Bloody misogynistic cunts" and then thought about sexism and beauty culture for a while watching. It did take me out of the scene it did made me think less of the show. This is a discussion about watching a show, if me not liking a specific choice they made upset you, you also have bigger problems mate.

Also you just insulted me, why do you think that was OK? Do you always insult women who point out common misogynistic choices in TV, does that feel like a productive use of your time?

3

u/2andahalfbraincell Aug 24 '26

Why? I am not saying she should have hairy armpits because of the actress I just think it would fit the character better. Why would the actress hair growing ability even come into this.

-5

u/thresher456 Aug 24 '26

I mean, look at their name. You surprised?

-2

u/StunnedLife Aug 24 '26

I’d like to be a little optimistic with people’s brains sometimes. Ah well

6

u/heeeeyjude Aug 24 '26

we can see you're very optimistic about yours in particular...

5

u/Peregrine9000 Aug 24 '26

My mom literally doesn't grow leg hair. But yeah I think this actress might grow armpit hair and shaving is weird for the character.

8

u/raptorgrin Aug 24 '26

Even if the actress naturally has none and they made her wear fake armpit hair?

9

u/SashimiX Aug 24 '26

No because it looks fake

10

u/2andahalfbraincell Aug 24 '26

Yes. Obviously everyone who see that is gonna assume she shaved it and it does tell you something about the character. So if the character isn't someone who shaves then she should have fake harmpit hair

If a male character was idk trapped in the wilderness without any way of shaving and they casted a guy who for some reason couldn't grow a beard, they'd just slap a fake beard on him. Same reasoning.

4

u/erichf3893 Aug 24 '26

I think you’re going overboard here

3

u/Ill-Engineering8085 Aug 24 '26

No one cares but you

2

u/caks Aug 24 '26

Seems like a lot of people care. Including you

1

u/DanTejas Aug 24 '26

Do you think they really made her shave her hair, or maybe she just does it anyway as an actress who could be in other roles?

2

u/DarthJarJar242 Aug 24 '26

Why does it matter? Maybe the character doesn't like getting her head wet but can't stand body hair.

1

u/No-Call7349 Aug 24 '26

you would keep inventing scenarios in your head to be infuriated about

-16

u/trenton79 Aug 24 '26

No, why go out of your way to make her gross looking? Why are you focused on her manicured pits, why not whine her teeth are straight and white too?

13

u/raptorgrin Aug 24 '26

If armpit hair is gross, then men should also remove it. But it’s not gross unless it’s dirty.

0

u/trenton79 Aug 24 '26

Nope. It is totally gross. When women have hairy pits, most people agree with me which is why most women don’t have gross hairy pits. Also, once again, I noticed you’re completely ignoring the fact that she should have brown gross teeth as well if we’re going to be accurate.

-7

u/Calm_Monitor_3227 Aug 24 '26

Its gross in men as well. Are you lot walking around with unshaved pits?

3

u/heidismiles Aug 24 '26

Very, very few men shave their body hair. You know this.

3

u/ShutUpJade0420 Aug 24 '26

Exactly what I was coming to the comments for. Can't really tell in the screen if there's any signs of shaving, so it's always possible for this to a naturally bald pits situation.

2

u/R4mst33n Aug 24 '26

I have armpit hair, but it's invisible! It's one of the benefits of having (strawberry) blond hair!

2

u/ratwing Aug 24 '26

Im male and i basically have tiny little wisps of hair -- since they look so stupid I just hit 'em with a razor once a year and then I'm smooth like a Ken doll.

2

u/im4lonerdottie4rebel Aug 24 '26

I don't grow armpit hair either, I feel very fortunate

8

u/alicatpow Aug 24 '26

Same and I love hairy pits. My hippy friends at uni all dyed their underarm hair and I have like three fine hairs under there that can barely be seen 😭

1

u/petraqrsq Aug 24 '26

I grow like 7 puny hairs, 3 mm long in each pit, and they are light coloured, so I'd look the same in a picture. When I was a teen I was sooo frustrated, but now I only have to shave every 2 weeks

1

u/Cave_Bear_Cult Aug 24 '26

Same except the shame. Full beard, hairy chest and belly. Just a couple wispy strands in the pits.
