Have any opinion you want but I’m gutted about mass effect dying like this

u/Yarzu89 7h ago
Its been 6 years and that game was still in "early development".
171
u/Smallbenbot03 memer 7h ago
Well in those 6 years they made……veilguard…..

u/debid4716 3h ago
Origins was amazing. Inquisition was an enjoyable game. Veilguard just wasn’t fun
5
u/EuropeanAccountant 2h ago
It's sad that you totally missed out on DA II in your list. It was pretty good actually. Story wise, better than Inquisition but not on par with Origin.
12
u/_Xee 5h ago
"Made" isn't the term I'd use. More like... "took".
3
u/csvega84 3h ago
My heart is still broken. 10 years I waited for that sequel and they absolutely murdered it
182
u/Gmanglh 7h ago
Whatever "mass effect" got shit out would be nothing like the trilogy of the past. Refer to andromeda and veilguard, those are far more indicative of the future they were shipping. The people who made your childhood great left that studio long ago.
27
u/Yarzu89 6h ago
Especially having to try and weave a story after ME3 different endings, which despite the color filter jokes, were all pretty different for world building. I have no idea how a competent writing team would handle that, let alone the team they had.
7
u/Spartan_Mage 5h ago
They would have to pick one ending to be cannon have have the choices that were made during that be variable. It's the only way to do it without making the game basically 4 different games in one, and no studio has the time, money, patience or will to do that for Mass Effect.
4
u/TheBetterness 5h ago
Thats the thing you don't have to use that as the basis of the next story.
The universe is massive no pun intended to build upon.
So much happened prior to ME1 that I think would make for a cool game. Or jump so far into the future that what happened in the trilogy is long gone.

I really liked Andromeda everbody who i know and didnt like it said because they wanted it to be Mass effect 4 and thats not what they got.

u/Otherwise_Ad7946 7h ago
Mass effect has been one of my favorite series ever.. this hurt my soul
11
u/MadAsTheHatters 6h ago
Think of it this way, it hurts a lot less than watching them turn the series into some live service slop...or, like Veilguard, almost turn into hollow live service slop, pivot repeatedly, and end up with hollow single player slop instead.
2
u/Spartan_Mage 5h ago
Honestly after having so many of my favorite games series just stop one day with no hope for return, I think I'd rather have them at least try to make another game like them. Because right now they are just forgotten and dead, with no hope of return.
3
u/Space_veteran96 5h ago
Let me guess... a Destiny 2 player too?
3
u/Spartan_Mage 4h ago
Destiny 2, Titanfall 2, Team Fortress 2, Mechassault 2, Armored Core 6, the list goes on. Games that will most likely never get a sequel and that I dearly miss
3
u/Space_veteran96 4h ago
Feel ya man!
Got like close to 5,3k hours in Destiny 2, so when the news came, it hit like a truck... but I'm happy they are bringing vaulted content back (even if those would be just the campaigns, destinations and Raids (I'm half not expecting Black Armory or any seasonal stuff)).
TF2 and TF|2 work still so I guess it's not that bad

Bioware is no longer what it was when it was making all these great IPs. Blessing in disguise.

u/Cablepussy 7h ago
I’m happy game companies are dying.
They’ve been allowed to fail upwards for about a decade now resting on their laurels.
Hopefully Ubisoft is next.

u/angelpetalrj 6h ago
BioWare used to be a legendary RPG studio, man. This shit is depressing.
26
u/Ssessen49 6h ago
As someone who grew up playing Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic, I feel you, but devs like Blizzard, Bethesda, Sega, and whoever bought the rights to Halo said "we're already at the top, so why bother trying when we can coast on past success?" before leading themselves into an era of self-inflicted decline as the original vision of game design vanishes in favor of high-budget projects that lose money if they're not smash-hits. Indie game studios exploded after all the big developers stopped taking risks, and it's hard to argue the likes of BioWare don't deserve to fizzle out if they won't make good games.
dust to dust
14
u/StandNameIsWeAreNo1 6h ago
Then Anthem happened. And apparently DA Veilguard
9
u/darkgothmog 5h ago
And they were bought by the Saudis. I don’t see Shepard or wherever having sex with aliens under their rule
2
0
u/Itchy-Beach-1384 3h ago
Anthem was mechanically fantastic and would have been fine with a little more support to fix the gameplay loop outside of the story.
DA Veilgaurd was a great game that got shit on by culture warriors and the same "its not a crpg like I wanted" that all Bioware games have faced for 30 years.
5
1
u/TheBetterness 5h ago
Ive been depressed for the last 12 yrs. Thats the last time they made an rpg of any quality.
24
u/EnergyHumble3613 6h ago
EA has long been the graveyard of game developers.
To the point that in Game Dev Tycoon, if your company files for bankruptcy, EA buys you out to get access to your IPs.

Considering how veilguard turned out this isn’t surprising
9
7
u/Anonymousboneyard 5h ago
It died after Andromeda tanked out. Interesting story they started but was far too little and had bad design. With how many games have been coming out just tanking immediately i dont think ima be sad about it. Id rather remember the series fondly than watch it collapse like the others.
39
u/PearlQuiet 7h ago
Are we actually living in the worst timeline right now or what?
22
u/Lt-Corvin_709 7h ago
It could always get worse. There's a timeline out there where the first Sonic movie flopped and the ENTIRE SONIC SERIES would've been done after Frontiers.
7
u/FoodNo1809 6h ago
The worst timeline would be another andromeda or veilguard like game. So I guess we dodged a bullet.
1
u/KitchenFullOfCake 5h ago
I mean some people liked those games, and with something bad you have the option of whether or not you play it.
6
u/CaptainMidnight94 Dark Mode Elitist 6h ago
Good, let that fucking zombie of my loved one die. Bioware was over when the founders left.
20
u/MsSobi 6h ago
This is why a publisher shouldn't hold IP rights and IPs from collapsed companies should go public domain, ESPECIALLY if the IP was made before the Publisher "bought" the company
14
1
u/Inner_Choice5338 6h ago
Wouldn't public domain be messy for video games? I mean it's not like a William Shakespeare play or a Jane Austen novel. They can be done differently for movies and things but they are still the same. You can't put their name on something new. If everyone and there mothers can get there hands on making Mass Effect Games, it can become saturated and lose its meaning, since it's such a massive media and has such a huge following. Maybe I'm over thinking it though.
2
u/Spartan_Mage 5h ago
To be fair most studios would rather do their own game idea than try to revive an old one. You would mostly see nostalgia fueled fan projects and maybe one or two mainline games
9
7
u/Maleficent-War-8429 7h ago
Not to be a Debbie downer or anything, but mass effect has been dead for the last 14 years. I'd sooner they didn't tarnish their legacy (such as it is with 3 and its botched job ending) by making some complete garbage.

2
u/AsstacularSpiderman 3h ago
Yeah Bioware hasn't made a decent game in well over a decade. Like the Veilguard, Andromeda, and Anthem were just pure mediocrity.
Like thinking back on it now Inquisition is pretty much the last game of theirs i consider tolerable
-1
u/Sir_Delarzal 2h ago
Veilguard is a perfectly good game, and I have yet to meet someone that actually played it, disliked it and tell me an actual good reason as to why they disliked it. So far, the closest I had to a reason was a barely disguised opinion about some woke bullshit that barely exists in the game

3
u/dusty_pancake1 7h ago
Mass Effect fans have been preparing for the worst since the ending of ME3. We're built for this
3
u/Select_Cantaloupe_62 6h ago
Fuck it, let's crowdfund our own sequel. What could Keith David possibly cost? $12m?
1
u/Correct-Purpose-964 6h ago
That would actually unironically be cheaper than the ME fandom buying the game.
Mass effect 1-2-3 had sales in the millions of copies. Each at like $60-70 per with a disc. Adjusting for inflation we could easily crowdfund $100m.
I'd actually considered learning coding so I can begin making video games but I have no artistic talent AT ALL. And even if I did nobody is gonna crowdfund some random asshat on the internet claiming he wants to "bring back gaming". The age of trust is long gone sadly.
6
u/ArcadianGh0st 6h ago
Mate, you and I both know this was for the best. Think of it more like putting a dog out of its misery.

There did not need to be another mass effect.
Should be encouraging new ideas not more sequels. 🤷
2
u/Pilota_kex 5h ago
I would have loved a complete Andromeda though.
1
u/richtofin819 4h ago
Yeah andromeda had a really cool premise it just had issues at launch and it's hard to take a "last survivors of our species" plot as seriously when you already struggled and managed to save the milky way.
2
u/Drudgework 4h ago
Andromeda would have been much better off from a narrative standpoint if it came out between mass effect 2 and 3.

u/RustyNK 6h ago
Why even waste money buying gaming companies if you're just going to close them? They spent almost a billion dollars in 2007, which is an insane amount in today's money.
7
2
u/theacp127 5h ago
Because their investment was wasted on a studio that's only been putting out flops for the last decade.
0
u/baron_spaghetti 4h ago
And they’ve pretty much pushed them to push out only cookie cutter copy/paste crap with zero innovation or creativity.
2
u/AsstacularSpiderman 3h ago
Nah in Biowares case EA had to practically beg them to put shit out. Anthem espeically apparently EA had to put a gun to their head to actually release something as apparently they wasted most of the time fiddling with concept art
1
u/cloudlessjoe 5h ago
Because it was an investment and they were making good games, which led them to believe they would continue doing so. At some point you can't keep losing money on the promise it'll eventually pay off.
1
1
u/AsstacularSpiderman 3h ago
Tbf Bioware was a shell of itself by now. They wasted a metric fuckton of money on Anthem which didn't pan out, Andromeda was mid, and Veilguard was just meh as well.
I don't think anything could save it at this point. The talent was just gone
1
u/Naxirian 2h ago
I'm tentatively hopeful for that new Star Wars game just because Casey Hudson is heading it up. BioWare went to shit after he left.

Tax Breaks. Any Dollar spent that doesnt make any revenue in return within a certain timeframe can be written of as expenses. So you buy a Studio, let it idle for a while, push out a game and if it flops close the studio and write of an even bigger loss for your taxes. Not sure at wich point its worth it, but considering they keep doing it, it must be worth it most of the times.
3
u/420ciskey420 3h ago
What the fuck are you talking about
Please point to the tax code these tax breaks refer too

u/TheJasonaut 5h ago
There was a long road or clear tracks leading up to this, doesn’t make it suck any less, but cannot be too surprising.
For anyone who does find it shocking, definitely read up about corporate consolidation, private equity and Saudi investments. There are some significant trends that are messing up plenty of markets/businesses at an alarming rate.
2
u/iateagummibear-1822 3h ago
Being honest... I'm actually not that upset about this. After Andromeda and Anthem. I kinda loss hope that the next Mass Effect was going to be any good. IMHO, if a series of media has a well rounded conclusion; but a later release is dogshit due to the makers losing their mojo, I honestly think and feel that the franchise is better put to rest so it's remembered fondly. I much I love Mass Effect, I don't trust EA or even Bioware anymore to make a great or even good game at this point that will meet my and probably others expectations. They are clearly now a different company than they were 14+ years ago, and I would honestly prefer if they just went bankrupt so their IPs could possibly go to a better gaming company that will actually treat the franchise with the respect it deserves.

u/phant0md 6h ago
Mass Effect 2 was lightning in a bottle and the rest of the series hangs on it. There was never going to be a worthy successor. As sad as I am, this is probably for the best. In a way its legacy is protected.
1
u/FoodNo1809 6h ago
Oh no. And here I was waiting years for another andromeda. Whatever they would have made would be nothing like the old games we loved. The brand died years ago. They just put it to rest now.

u/classic_gamer82 6h ago
Whatever the original vision for the newest ME was, it’ll sadly never see the light of day. Hopefully the IP finds its way to a studio that gives it the attention the franchise deserves.

1
u/cloudlessjoe 5h ago
Getting bought out usually lowers the floor for failure and subsidizes the smaller company, but at some point they turn out enough financial failures and have to go away. Bioware peaked in terms of making money over 12 years ago, sucks but they made their own bed.
1
1
u/LuckyReception6701 5h ago
While I'm sad that BioWare is no more, I really had no illusion Mass Effect was going to come out, that game was shaping up to be the next Duke Nukem forever
1
u/Tutorbin76 5h ago
I trust this won't affect the existing games, or do they have some silly cloud dependency?
1
u/Smallbenbot03 memer 5h ago
EA still own the IP so they’ll hold onto it so they can do absolutely nothing with it
1
u/First_Revenge 5h ago
Honestly, probably for the best. The bioware we loved has been dead in all but name for a while.
More likely than not the next mass effect would have just been a desecration of the franchise. All good things come to an end.
1
u/Slow_Store 5h ago
I’m thrilled with the news because now Mass Effect probably has a better chance of continuing as an IP.
Someone competent can pick it up and maybe get a few games out of it whereas if BioWare had released their game the IP would’ve probably been buried and never touched again.
1
u/LooneyGoon1994 5h ago
They need to give us a proper ending to mass effect 3. Having a deep breath as an ending is the drown fall I’ve been praying for.
1
u/FrozenPrimarch 5h ago
I mean, that's fair. I enjoyed all the mass effect games, 3 was definitely my favorite with Andromeda dropping the ball pretty hard. It just wasn't mass effect anymore, and they should have owned up to that and just done better.
Dropping the entire IP because one game had bad numbers but still telling themselves they did a good job is what really killed the IP. Maybe don't make a trash game, but who am I but a humble gamer.
1
1
u/theacp127 5h ago
They should have made good games that sold well instead of crap like Anthem and Veilguard. Even if they made a new Mass Effect it likely also would have been bad.

u/Superb-Ad-9169 5h ago
After years of being in "early development" limbo next ME would probably be just Failguard in space lol

at some point we need to accept that we have a huge library of perfectly good old media to partake in!

I dunno man, Mass Effect died for me a long time ago. Andromeda gave me hope, but apparently I was the only one that wanted more Ryder and less Shepard.

End of an era and the death of a great game series that deserved better in the end. Oh well, in a decade or so when gaming is entirely AI you can just prompt your own Bioware-like games to play in the same day, right? That's assuming you could afford the cost of leasing the AI model to do so, and who knows if we'll still have water and what not, but hey.

When they obliterated the sequel to Dragon Age Inquisition, I was done. Ruined even the gorgeous art style of Inquisition for something worse than Overwatch designs

1
u/senbonkagetora 3h ago
I am sorry for how it is affecting you, imo they had been living on borrowed time since they started working for EA, they are known for tossing gaming companies away, usually after they make a game poorly that wasnt part of their wheel house, or like with titanfall, deliberately sabotage them by making it release close to major games.

1
u/Emotional_Being8594 2h ago
This is shitty news, but I doubt whatever remained of BioWare could deliver on expectations. Like many studios it's just a name now, the people and cultural circumstances that resulted in the original trilogy are gone.
1
u/Interesting_Buy6796 2h ago
I don’t understand what’s going on anymore, it’s one thing to get rid of people that are not worth their money, but do they not want release games anymore? Just don’t make money your self and only buy tech stocks, is that the idea?

1
u/Vo_Mimbre 1h ago
So this is how I find out... sucks, but agreed. We're remembering the pre-EA Bioware that was DA:O and ME2, not the years-later Bioware that was just a label on top of hardworking people wronged by bad decisions.

Bioware died ages ago, the orbituary was just released today.
People can blame EA, rightfully so, but the studio was going under until EA brought them.
Bioware and Bethesda are why I no longer treat game developers as something special. Leads to nothing but hubris.
