Nothing builds customer loyalty like reminding everyone they don’t actually own that they bought

I’d feel differently if we owned the games “for life” rather than just a license to play it.

That they can just decide “nah you don’t own this anymore”, I abhor.

Especially that they sent that reminder after deleting a lot of movies from people's libraries. I'll stick to PC now, especially since Xbox has the PC Gamepass

The movie one, unfortunately, is because the movie provider didn't renew with Sony, so all their stuff got pulled. Sony was involved, but was not the main driver for the movie pull.

Also, don't buy digital movies, it makes no sense. Just have it physical or use one of the 4 streaming services that I'm sure most people use.

Steam is the one who started all this and first killed the First Sale Doctrine. Everyone just wants to be Valve when they see it take in over $10 billion in profits this year with only 350 employees. So if you want to be a PC gamer and own your game licenses for life with transfer ability, don't support Valve. They took your right of transfer away.

I didn't even mention steam, you moron. Ever heard of gog? I also use emulators of older consoles.

-1

u/Coldfriction 3h ago

But I did. Where are you getting your PC games? Steam has 31,000 exclusives. When you say you're going to be a PC gamer, you're stepping right into the same dog crap that you think you're leaving.

u/o_Sagui 8h ago

It's not just the fact they can negate your ownership. Sony being the only one who can retail on their hardware, means monopoly for game aquisition. Means, they can charge how much they want.

Yeah that's my biggest issue with it. Good physical deals are caused by stores clearing stock. With no competitors, digital deals will get worse too.

u/Dismal_Tangerine_493 7h ago

Yeah digital games are cheaper to produce than physical discs, yet they offer you fewer rights

1

u/GuestGulkan 6h ago

Yes, but owning a disk doesn't mean anything anyway now. Sony today can just release a software patch killing the ability to load the game from the disk. Unless you keep your PS5 offline forever and who is going to do that?

Edit: irl, what actually happens is future consoles just drop support for old disks. This happens all the time, I never get this argument over disks other than:

Physical disk = second-hand market

Which is a reasonable complaint. But it's the only one that really stands up.

The year is 2030. You must verify your digital license via eye-scan before launching a single-player game.

Started with Half Life 2 over 20 years ago. Everyone wants to be Valve with a money printer now.

It's not that they're out of touch, just forcing something on their customers that isn't wanted. They didn't run a survey, just said "We can cut an entire production line and force more people to buy the game directly from us than resale. It will give us direct control of the games and link customer ownership to all purchases for marketing value. Even if we lose some customers, the profit from this will be exponentially higher, and many of those customers will come back anyway after a short boycott."

-1

u/Swiftwitss 8h ago

lol watch it you’re gonna have a bunch of any meat riders and deep throaters who will tell you with a straight face “they’re not forcing you to do anything!”

-1

u/suspicious_cabbage 8h ago

I just mean they're forcing change. It's an abuse of customer loyalty, but since it already has precedent by PlayStation's competitors I'd rate it as pretty low risk.

The entire system of renting and subscription based services has become predatory and needs to be regulated into oblivion.

1

u/9-5grind 11h ago

Everything went downhill when blockbuster went under lol

3

u/kilertree 11h ago

The problem is Block buster sucked. Renting DVDs by mail though netflix was less painful.

-1

u/9-5grind 11h ago

Idk what ur talking about, blockbuster was peak for me back in the day. Every weekend my fam would go there to rent a movie and if I was lucky a game lol

3

u/kilertree 11h ago

The feeso and subscription was too coastly.

2

u/9-5grind 11h ago

Don't remember there being a subscription but I've paid my fair share in late fees lmfao

3

u/kilertree 11h ago

Sorry I should've said membership fee

2

u/9-5grind 11h ago

All good my guy :3

Something kind of related to that to remember is that VHS tapes used to be really expensive when they first came out. That was true of a lot of video formats. So, the model started out that you'd buy the player and rent the media. When movies got cheaper in the late 80s and 90s, people started buying more movies. That meant less revenue for Blockbuster and drove prices up. Funnily enough, Top Gun was a trendsetter here. The Pepsi partnership they did meant they could sell the VHS cheaper. This was part of a larger trend toward product placement in movies. This is also why game rentals were pushed so heavily even into the early days of Redbox. They were always more expensive, so renting them (especially new releases) still made sense. The media model swung toward ownership and then went to digital which is just renting at this point. It's come full circle.

1

u/Icy9kills 2h ago

It was peak because you were a little kid.

5

u/Deserter15 7h ago

I didn't even realize people still bought physical games until sony announced this. I haven't bought a physical game in over 15 years.

2

u/30-0000FF 7h ago

Something like 85% of PS game sales are digital. It's a loud minority that think this no disc thing is a problem. It also makes sense from a business standpoint not to bother with the costs of physical media and disc drives for something that only 15% of your market actually uses. But hey, cynicism beats pragmatism every day of the week on social media.

1

u/BabyJuggernaut3545 21m ago

Amen. I a glad to be done with physical media. I hope games stop hose outta business. Just for offering me 2$ on a 6 month old game back in the day

2

u/positasik 7h ago

What they fear right now is jailbreak

2

u/plancklengthh 12h ago

Who wouldn't love renting pixels forever?

u/ChrissWayne 12h ago

Complaining about Sony, pretending to boycott them but do nothing cause GTA will be released soon surely will help. It’s fuxking annoying and ridiculous. Complain about them and boycott them or shut up about it and live without your actions, it’s that simple. You can’t have both. To act like this is out of touch too, out of touch with reality. You want change then do something about it instead of whining and still giving them your money. The hypocrisy is strong with Sony „haters“

1

u/TheBetterness 11h ago

They arent giving Sony money only shit lol

Sony aint selling games or consoles as they were even a year ago. Last financial report had hardware sales down 55%. And there has been no milestone announcement for their last 2 first party games.

They are currently milking fanboys who only see complaining and bitching.

-1

u/Hevens-assassin 8h ago

Hardware prices have launched up in the past year because of the AI race. The PS5 has sold over 95 Million, and the PS4 has sold 117 million. Sales going down because of their cost is the main driver, not to mention most of their base has already shifted over. (81% and still climbing).

Hardware sales is a non-convo. Milestone announcements are not given for every game, but Marvel Tokon is niche and supposedly only sold 1 Million, and Wolverine was hit hard by online rhetoric and only sold 2.5 Million. It's been a rough year sales wise for first parties, but Saros, Tokon, and Marathon are still excellent games, and Wolverine is better than the Internet is saying it is (not worth the AAA pricetag, imo, but still not a complete waste of cash), but the Sony hate machine is going full speed ahead and it doesn't really matter the quality of the game anymore.

If discs genuinely mattered to the broader audience, third party physical sales would be as high as the occasional first party game, but they aren't. Capcom has had a huge year, but less than 10% of console sales have been physical. To be pissed that Sony is killing physical in 2028 is stupid as hell when we had 1.5 years to prove that physical was essential. But we haven't. The community while trying to stick it to Sony, could only manage 32% of physical sales on a lower selling game (Wolverine), but all 3 other exclusives have a much smaller physical sales number.

Commenting on every Instagram post and every YouTube video has done nothing.

1

u/TheBetterness 7h ago

Commenting on every IG and YT video got Sony to make more Destiny and remove the PSN login from Helldivers 2.

Commenting on every IG and YT video got you writing paragraphs defending a billion dollar corporation.

People speaking up loudly when the like something is fine, calling the competition shit. A la Sony just a few years ago.

But speaking up loudly when they do something we dislike is just chud outrage and means nothing.

While Xbox is still recovering from 2013 for trying to do the same. You can claim AI, but AI had nothing to do with a 700 million impairment loss or the half dozen failed projects.

2

u/PromptSpiritual3739 7h ago

Steam started all of this lmao

1

u/CutsSoFresh 6h ago

Steam also didn't randomly delete people's digital libraries like Sony did

1

u/PipSpace3Xplorerer 3h ago

Less than 25% of gamers on PlayStation are complaining about game discs.

The rest of us are hoping AAA developers start making good games again, when game discs can't be sold in store, and these developers have to rely 100% on direct sales

1

u/TheBeardofCrom 2h ago

I don't even care about the physical media thing, it's the way that Sony handled all the backlash basically giving everyone a big middle finger and telling us we don't matter and we don't fucking own anything anyway.

Only games I'm buying for my PS5 now are physical and when my Plus runs out in February I'm buying an Xbox.

1

u/BabyJuggernaut3545 22m ago

If you think owning a disk means you own the game… I have something to break to you.. a patch or console ban takes care of that. Not to mention 50% of the games require more to download

1

u/mrloko120 11h ago

The money is always right

1

u/tinaishereforu 10h ago

Sony’s next innovation: you own nothing, you’re happy, and the ‘Buy’ button now says ‘Rent forever.

1

u/Lord_Xarael 8h ago

Sony's decision makers all need to be referred to a Cranio-proctologist (a doctor that specializes in removing heads from asses)

1

u/Tvelt17 8h ago

And there's been 0 financial reprocussions on Sony for it.

Literally 0.

Just lots of comments and discourse online from people who continue to buy the products.

1

u/Windyandbreezy 8h ago

Well if Gamers continue to buy digital, then consumer complaints dont matter. In the end Sony speaks one language. Money. If someone gives you money but complains about it, you still got the money.

1

u/Brad23212 5h ago

I don’t have any of the physical copies of the games I bought on steam. This isn’t a new concept

1

u/EspikCZ 12h ago

Now they need to sell their console first to have any purchase. Good luck.

0

u/Swiftwitss 8h ago

I can’t wait for the new Xbox and ps6 to fucking flop

1

u/BigBaws92 7h ago

It’s the first gen since the 90s where I’m not buying a console

-1

u/TheBetterness 11h ago

Not just gamers but also third party developers.

I truly think Sony is completely fucked in the long term but will be fine for a bit due to GTA6.

Console player base is shrinking year over year and come 2028 they will be competing directly with Steam as a full digital marketplace.

-1

u/randypeaches 9h ago

This means they're going to lower the prices to reflect the fact that games are now rentals, right? They're going to lower prices right?

u/Interesting-Cap7775 Smol pp 9h ago

"You asked for digital games, you're getting digital PS5 instead. How about that ?"

- Gamers to Sony

0

u/mayormcskeeze 6h ago

It is literally the gamers who are being unreasonable. 90% of sales are digital. No one cares about this outside the reddit echo chamber.

Sony is woke shiiiiiiit . They are no longer what they used to be before ps4

-4

u/Able-Comparison-2089 10h ago

I haven't owned a physical disc and will never buy one again. It's truly pointless these days beyond physical ownership. We just need better laws around digital ownership. I don't get how anyone can argue that wouldn't be better. If you scratch or loose a disc. You gotta buy it again. I've never had to re-purchase a digital game. I just need laws it can't be stripped from me if a platform changes. I should be able to purchase a digital license and have access to play the game anywhere forever.
