RuPaul’s Drag Race employs a “Queen Crew,” basically a bunch of PAs that move the contestants from one set to another, do a great deal of set grunt work, and take care of any of the queens’ off-camera needs. Can’t remember the queen or the season, but they shared their story of a Queen Crew member being standoffish and visibly uncomfortable on set. They later found out that she was falsely under the impression that she was taking a job working crew on a car-related show.

In college I use to set up and tear down events. I got called to do a load out for a drag race at the college. I was confused because there’s no where on campus for racing. So I rationalized it by assuming it was RC cars. When I arrived I caught the end of the show and literally had no clue what was going on, but I did learn what the other drag race was that night.

Technically there are. Just not as contestants or on the US season (yet).

Edit: Sorry, for clarification, I meant cis women. Trans women do exist on the show though. We have yet to have a cis female drag performer on the US series. We’ve had a few cis female drag artists on a few international seasons.

Has there been more rep in later seasons? I don’t remember any women in the earlier seasons (at least none that were public about being women at the time) but it’s been years and years since I watched.

There are women from earlier seasons who transitioned after they were on the show.

Ru used to be (maybe still is but has gotten better at hiding it) quite transphobic and would not let trans women on the show until Willow Pill. Who is my absolute favourite drag queen.

So, Peppermint was the first contestant to be out as trans on the main show, though she was pretty early in her transition (argument to be made for Sonique, who came out in the reunion of season 2). Gott Mik was the first out and transitioned contestant on season 13, though as a trans man. Willow didn’t come out as trans on the show, but during the time the show was airing. Kerri Colby, also on season 14, was out and fully female presenting, then her drag mom Sasha Colby won the next season, also fully out and transitioned. Since then it seems like the floodgates are mostly open

I highly recommend looking up Willow Pill's final performances, specifically "I Hate People" from the finale. I got to talk to her once and found out she proudly identifies as a communist, it took everything in my body not to say "that's a red pill I'd swallow". I still kind of regret not saying it but I was technically working... lol

The show is great. Generally speaking I detest reality TV but drag race is always a blast.

It isn't scripted but the more of it you watch the more you will see production coming through because they're just always has to be a production team, but compared to the fully scripted garbage that is the norm it's a breath of fresh air.
