The Wachowskis' involvement in Matrix 5: "Drew Goddard doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing, so we might take a look"

https://movieweb.com/the-matrix-5-lilly-wachowski-update/

Lilly Wachowski: "Warner Bros. — they want to make another thing. They're always going to want to make another thing. Personally, I don't want to play in that sandbox anymore. I'm kind of done. But there's this maybe-a-thing that's happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so it becomes this complicated situation — that maybe we're going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel. And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So could be something that's coming down the road, but it's still unknown."

Just make another Animatrix movie.

That would have been the creative place to go, a cinematic second renaissance.

Studios don't do creative anymore. They dig up the corpses of established IPs and make them... fly around in a rainbow sky... You pay us now.

u/Proof_Ambassador2006 Sep 06 '26

Love Death and Robots got huge. Black Mirror got huge.

There is absolutely a space for anthological scifi set in established universes and studios are doin' some cool stuff.

All the castlevania stuff was sick.

The Predator cinematic universe gets better and better, the animated movie was tough.

5

u/DivorcedGremlin1989 Sep 06 '26

There's a Predator cinematic universe?

7

u/Proof_Ambassador2006 Sep 06 '26

Yuh!

The Predator films are all tied, as well as Alien-verse existing in the Predatorverse (but not vice versa somehow).

Prey, and Badlands were both peak cinema.

7

u/flipinbits Sep 06 '26

Predator is in the process of becoming disneyfied. I enjoyed the last one as an unserious popcorn movie but it was total fan service and lacked any of the grit and horror of the originals.

Put it this way… they can shoehorn aliens into the predator universe but the second they add a predator tie back into the aliens franchise Disney will have ruined yet another beloved piece of cinema from my childhood.

6

u/Proof_Ambassador2006 Sep 06 '26

Badlands did feel a bit flanderized and Dek was a pussy in terms of Yautjia. Would love to see Trachtenberg go more gritty this go around.

3

u/AdmirableElephant378 Sep 10 '26

Judging the masculinity of Yautjia. Peak #smallcock insanity.

2

u/Proof_Ambassador2006 Sep 10 '26

His brother literally kicked the piss out of him. Like, easy mode.

1

u/DivorcedGremlin1989 Sep 10 '26

I enjoyed it, but I didn't really like it. It felt like the target audience was pre-pubescent boys. It was juvenile and definitely felt like Disney property.

Not forgetting Star Wars: Visions! Two of the episodes from its second season (Cartoon Saloon's "Screecher's Reach" and Aardman's "I Am Your Mother") are probably my favourite pieces of Star Wars media of any kind released since 1980. (And I say that as someone who likes most of the feature films made under Disney more than a lot of fans do.)

12

u/StrifeBuster7 Sep 06 '26

I would argue that Resurrection was far more creative than any form of live action Second Renaissance could have been.

4

u/spyker54 Sep 06 '26

I always laugh when i hear people say that hollywood no longer has any creative ideas. There are plenty of creative people in hollywood, but none of them are in charge

This year has been a great year for original movies from new/lesser known directors (backrooms, obsession, iron lung)

3

u/LetItAllGo33 Sep 06 '26

I agree with you about minor studios like A24. The last gasps of SHOWbusiness, always in danger of being swallowed up by the biggies of they become too successful.

Lets not pretend that original stories drive the industry at large anymore though.

1

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 Sep 07 '26

A24 is a mini-major studio.

1

u/SuperJPM2 Sep 12 '26

I’ve been wondering what the next Matrix would be called since they seem to stick to words that start with ’R’, and a couple years back I figured they should call it ’The Matrix Renaissance.’

14

u/timaclover Sep 06 '26

Thry could literally make a movie for each animatrix part.

I could see that.

15

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

That's exactly what I say. I think the sisters need to say no more live action we have told the story but will let you do anthologies in animation, similar to the Animatrix.

It's also a myth that Lilly didn't want to be involved in M4 because she thought the fourth one was bad, that's not true, she needed to step away for a while from working on big projects, per her own words, to process their parents' deaths in her own way but gave Lana her full blessing for movie 4.

4

u/StormknightUK Sep 06 '26

Sadly we also have to consider that they probably don't want to work for Warner on another movie of any kind, given Warner are continuing to give large amounts of money and relevance to JKR, who is using it to legally persecute trans women.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

I can have probably a factor also although I will say if this next 5th movie has to get made without their direct involvement I do trust Drew Goddard over others.

3

u/CaseFace5 Sep 06 '26

Or take the concept of one of those shorts and expand it into a full film. There’s so much world building they don’t need to keep trudging Neo and Trinity out.

2

u/Aranthos-Faroth Sep 06 '26

Animaniacs matrix plz

2

u/habbo311 Sep 06 '26

Make the first 2 parts of the animatix but with live actors

1

u/MK-911 Sep 06 '26

I would want it to be all animated again.

2

u/HandakinSkyjerker Sep 07 '26

It’s one of the best lore expansions of the entire series. Give animators and new age stylization a chance.

2

u/The_Evil_Chris Sep 07 '26

I legitimately think this is the answer.

1

u/Doctor_Philgood Sep 07 '26

And lets get a motherfucking World War Z anthology just like it with multiple studios

1

u/Step1Mark Sep 07 '26

Animated series on HBO Max would be amazing.

Each season could also be a different event.

1

u/icemuttkills Sep 06 '26

Just make another matrix movie in general. Life is short. It would be interesting to see the matrix being told from another perspective other than the sisters. The animatrix was good for that but I prefer live action

50

u/Zerostar39 Sep 06 '26

What they should do is explore other stories like a prequel showing when the machines enslaved mankind.

16

u/paradox1920 Sep 06 '26

Drew Goddard has The Animatrix to take inspiration from. To me, a blueprint is right there.

13

u/CubsFanCraig Sep 06 '26

I’d rather see the machine civil war that we saw a glimpse of in Resurrections.

5

u/eldenpotato Sep 07 '26

Live action Second Renaissance please. The anime was terrifying.

157

u/BobRushy Sep 06 '26

I'm open to it. Matrix 4 was messy, but I loved the character development of Neo and Trinity, the gentleness of their love, and the evolution of the Matrix itself and how it found a new angle to gaslight people. It's underappreciated.

66

u/LetItAllGo33 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

It was one of the original creators openly mocking the idea of bringing the world back by literally painfully reanimating and reassembling their protagonist's corpses as confused shadows of themselves, having those reanimated corpses scream "why did you do this?!" at a laughing executive archetype, and basically turning to the camera and saying so as those characters fly around like cartoons in a disney movie in the end. Great meta commentary of the modern ruins of the entertainment industry, certainly not a Matrix movie, by design.

I'm happy it was made that way, the story was told, and it tried to mock the idea of reopening it at every level.

47

u/BobRushy Sep 06 '26

I agree there was mockery there, but I don't agree that it wasn't a Matrix movie by design. There's a lot of earnest love and loyalty there to the original trilogy.

19

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

Yeah that's exactly it and Lana verbatim has said this during the promotion cycle when the movie came out and after, sure maybe WB was probably in fact, going to make one, whether she and Lilly were involved or not but ultimately, and after their parents died, it had to be her project, it had to be her outlet for her grief, it had to be her creative place to give Neo and Trinity that second chance and give the original trilogy it's proper coda film. And film 4 is not made for casual fans only, it has the second and third movies all over it and everybody knows critics and casual viewers did not gel with the second and third movies except possibly Reloaded for being so amazing with its action set pieces.

You know what and I totally understand why she went with some meta commentary, she has every right to have some fun with, especially during the think tank sequence stuff, things she's heard and her sister have heard for absolute years about their property. But that doesn't mean she also wasn't making a genuine film, which she absolutely was!!

Is the action as good as the original trilogy no, is the tone quite different and jarring sure it is, but it is still a genuine film, at its core, just like the original films.

5

u/CooperDaChance Sep 06 '26

Also the Cat-trix post-credit scene was a cute suggestion.

3

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

Oh that post credits satire scene made me laugh so hard and I you have to even harder with some fans getting so butt hurt over it because how dare she make fun of her own thing I.

Doing honestly for a serious as the concepts that these movies chew on they've always been silly too I mean reloaded had ghost twins vampires all kinds of wild stuff these movies are as silly and manga inspired as they are, philosophically intriguing.

-1

u/LetItAllGo33 Sep 06 '26

You're allowed to like what you like.

3

u/Temptemphemp Sep 06 '26

Well that's certainly a childish and condescending answer to someone's thoughtful reply. Hope you're happy with yourself.

5

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

I also disagree that it's not a real matrix movie by design because I think it absolutely is but Lana also had the ability, using Thomas's new "job" to also run commentary on the industry and other things, while also making a genuine Matrix film, because it really is. I think people just struggle with the idea that these concepts do not have to be mutually exclusive, binary, I absolutely do not think they are with this movie. Because this movie also makes a major point to talk about that binaries are not always the reality. And also the other reality is, her style of filmmaking has just radically changed since the trilogy. M4 is very close in style and vibes to Sens8

Lana has also verbatim and very emotionally said, ultimately she took control of what probably was going to be in inevitable fourth film as a cash grab by the studio, once her and Lilly's parents died, and a very close friend, she had to have this as her project. This is her original creation, with Lilly, and Neo /Trinity, as she said a thousand times over, are her two most important characters to her. She has verbatim said that resurrecting them, even though she knows it made not a lot of sense, given how the trilogy ended was her comfort. She had to bring them back as her comfort, the project had to be her outlet for her grief and creativity, with her two favorite characters. As she said, "I can't have my parents back but I can bring Neo and Trinity back through the power of fiction and storytelling."

(It's also not true that Lilly wasn't involved because she thought it was a bad movie, Lilly stated numerous times she had to work through her own grief in a different way and working on another Matrix film and such a major capacity wasn't how she wanted to do it but she gave Lana her full blessing.)

0

u/Jean-Ralphio11 Sep 06 '26

I seriously dont understand how people dont get this. Its 100% her saying "ok fine, you were gonna make this with or without me even though I said the story was done? Here ya go, this is what I think of it."

It was super intentionally garbage and Keanu, Carrie and all were in on it. No one is supposed to like Matrix 4. Its commentary on everything thats wrong with movie franchises.

4

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

You are completely unacknowledging Lana also verbatim saying that she knew it wasn't necessarily logical after the original trilogy was done but bringing back Neo and Trinity was her comfort after her parents passing. Ultimately she had to do the movie at the end of the day not just because I don't think honestly she wanted to see her project in the hands of someone else at the time and it was her outlet for her parents passing she has said this a thousand times.

I don't know why fans have such a hard time believing that you can have fun with the meta commentary, but that she also was making a genuine film those two things don't have to be mutually exclusive because they aren't.

1

u/ClueBasic2887 Sep 06 '26

Matrix 4 was awesome at best. Lana should be proud of the result!

1

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

If the cosmic Universe ever lines up and somehow I get to meet he, I'm going to tell her this very thing.

7

u/Temptemphemp Sep 06 '26

That's really not it, only your projection of the material. Is there a level of snark directed at WB? Yes. But is it also an earnest conclusion of the story? Also yes.

3

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

This is what I'm worried about, Neo and Trin getting messed with, I waited 20 years for a much happier ending for them, as much as I loved Revolutions and how bold it was, it just never felt like that was meant to be the final piece of the story, for them especially, but 4 did.

I LOVED the fourth movie, messiness and all. It's a great coda, and I don't want Neo and Trinity's second chanceand I don't want Neo and Trinity's Second Chance mucked up.

I know a lot of people get caught up on the meta elements only but they are not the entire script, nor the entire intention of the film. It is a genuine film, with genuine heart, with some meta moments as Lana had full right to have some fun with stuff she's heard forever (Think Tank scene especially) about her own property and commentary on her own industry.

40

u/CommonSensei8 Sep 06 '26

The last matrix movie was awesome. The writing was fantastic. The choreography was a mess.

16

u/ACalcifiedHeart Sep 06 '26

The thing is:
They just needed one, sick as fuck, fight scene. Just one.
Or some kind of action sequence that had the same kind of impact as the very first one.

Just something that was largely there for "because it's cool as shit, that's why"

But they were all just kinda... eh.
Not particularly bad. But not particularly good either.

6

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

You know, I might be a bit of an outlier as much as I especially love the second film for its insane set pieces, the one piece of merch I always wanted the absolute most was a replica of Oracle's kitchen sign, Temet Nosce. (Which I have now)

Because when you strip away all of the action set pieces and all of that, the core thesis of the entire franchise is, Know Thyself. With love conquers all as the other underlying thesis, along with of course, choice and free will.

1

u/einstein_ios Sep 07 '26

I really enjoyed the opening chase and the Merovingian fight.

24

u/BobRushy Sep 06 '26

My only complaint writing wise is that the whole modal thing with Morpheus and Smith was very overcomplicated.

4

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

What's interesting is she had said on a panel back around the promotion for the fourth film at the modal idea that actually come to her way before WB had started looking into the process of officially going forward with a fourth film with or without her.

11

u/webshellkanucklehead Sep 06 '26

The choreography kind of just… wasn’t. Not much in the way of action and that’s my only major problem with 4

6

u/wabe_walker Sep 06 '26

Agreed, and the direction had a lot to do with the choreography coming off bland, as well. Definitely doesn't match the levels of the trilogy, I feel, but just watch some of the BTS footage of the fight choreography training and you'll see that the BTS footage seems much more compelling when compared to what ended up on film. Clumsy cuts and poor framing can sure help sour the content of a performance, and mediocre content leaves that clumsiness so much less to work with.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

If you've ever watched, Sense8, Lana is absolutely using a similar approach to how she films the fourth film to Sense8. Which was way looser.

But yeah, you bring up a good point about the editing, I would be interested if the fourth film ever gets something of a re-edit just to smooth over some of the editing bumps here and there.

But at the end of the day, I'm glad it was Lana herself doing the movie bumps and all because I adore both of the sisters creativity and I would rather it have come from Lana and it be truly what Lana wanted to do with the fourth movie, than a true crash grab from the studio, had she ultimatey not worked on it. As I do think Lana also was making a genuine film, I mean all the meta stuff aside, you can tell she loves the characters and absolutely loves the second and third films because so much of the fourth movie is predicated on a deep understanding of the second and third films. While also getting to have some fun adding her own commentary in to things through the meta. As she also stated numerous times the death of her parents is really what nudged her to wanting to truly make it her own film bringing back Neo and Trinity was truly her comfort. As she said she could not bring her parents back but she could bring back Neo and Trinity and work through her feelings through creativity and storytelling.

But yeah if you couldn't tell, LOL, I unabashedly adore the fourth film, bumps and all.

1

u/zwissblade Sep 06 '26

I will have to look at this. Will pop in the disk next week.

5

u/zwissblade Sep 06 '26

Agreed. The concepts were solid. Really appreciated on a second viewing. I don't know why they didn't go with Yeau Woo ping or the obvious choice their protege's 87 eleven. Chad Stahelski was even in the movie. Whatever they do next. Please use a battle tested action movie choreographer. Even the folks that did the new spiderman movie, I think could craft some really engaging action set pieces. That was an excellent action movie. Closest mcu movie in my opinion to a capcom / arc systems marvel vs fighting game.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

I honestly think, as she's mentioned it, she just wasn't interested in doing something as refined choreography wise, as the trilogy. I think she talked about it was so exhausting doing that and she just has a different creative interests and impulses now and how she does things with the action sequences and she just went with it. In other words, they could have made it more refined and I don't think she was interested.

But I also think I read a few things about part of the issue was they had filmed some of it pre-covid shutdown and the rest of it after and there were some things that happened with that that altered some of the plans, ontop of her just having a whole different style as well at this point.

2

u/zwissblade Sep 06 '26

That I think makes a lot of sense. For me it wasn't even not having as excellent martial arts choreography as matrix trilogy (a very high bar was set with those movies), but even just the action was quite generic. The fight scene in act 3 in the abandoned derelict building with all the exiles really was the action low point for me.

I understand her mission with this movie was more the narrative, and the narative was very smart. But I think the action could have been tighter, maybe even less action but more polished. I was rewatching that scene just now, and maybe its the editing or the way it was shot. There may have been some good stuff in there but the way the action was presented just felt disjointed from the rest of the franchise.

3

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

I wonder if maybe in the future it could end up getting something of a re-edit just enough to sort of smooth out some of those bumps during some of the action sequences here and there.

Because I thought the ending sequence was phenomenal and probably the strongest set piece in the whole film. The Simulatte battle prior has a few rough spots too but once they exit Simulatte to the very end when they wake up in the real world, it's a fabulous sequence.

And I personally really love Trinity absolutely handing it to The Analyst at the end. Haha and honestly it's insanely badass to see her flying and I even don't mind them flying up past the camera even though it's corny as s*** because it's also kind of exceptionally enduring at the same time and I love it LOL

2

u/zwissblade Sep 06 '26

Agreed. I am due to for a full rewatch. Watched it twice in the theater and once at home. I will pop in the disk here within the next month or 2 and pay attention to the final act. I really like the politics of IO. These are the kinds if Ideas that can make the franchise even bigger. Really dig into what it means beyond the battle of the architect and the oracle. And the adjacent universe. Animatrix and the matrix comics had some fantastic stuff. Also that animatrix 2 that was leaked needs to make a solid comeback.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Yes! The I/O stuff is really good because the third movie had already started laying the foundation that not all programs or machines we're happy with how their machine overlords were functioning either and didn't want to be under their thumb, so the entire obviously ending of Revolutions was the concept of and emerging US and Them on a larger scale. And I/O proves this.

Had The Analyst not taken control, it's possible that I/O might have grown even bigger.

I also like the underlying little thing that I think Trinity ends up having a revelation about on the rooftop in that after what she experienced being plugged back in for a second time I think she understands why not every mind wants to unplug or notices something is off, she finally sees the beauty of the simulation, which could only happen after she is the only human in absolute centuries to have seen the real sky in Revolutions...so my guess is her and Neo work to undo The Analyst stranglehold on that version. We know that Neo wants nothing to do with being looked at as a messiah figure and Trinity doesn't really either, so they're obviously not going to make themselves gods in the machine, but my guess is they're going to do something closer to getting The Analysts to reactivate the truce from the third movie, and get back to that. And then you can solve the energy problem using both machine and human Minds.

3

u/zwissblade Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Indeed. Lots of ideas to chew on. Lets hope this new director wants the blessings and input for clarification purposes and bridging his ideas into what Lana may have been alluding too. Might have some great stuff, and the fact that he even wants the siblings to take a look implies he may be onto something.

2

u/icemuttkills Sep 06 '26

It’s actually pretty underrated imo that I even over look it times. Something about it seems as if it was fleshed for a tv series although they had an insane budget. But the story and beats is actually nice.

1

u/DeliriousPrecarious Sep 08 '26

I was a big defender of Matrox 4 when it came out. I still the the story was fun and the ideas pretty good, but have come around that even if you’re mocking the concept of a 4th matrix move you should still make a matrix movie. And that means good fight sequences and a distinct sense of style which was missing from matrix 4

1

u/BobRushy Sep 08 '26

I missed them too, but I felt their absence helped to convey Neo's isolation and the sense of time passing by. Plus, there's a lovely tribute to OG Morpheus.

1

u/Mousefang Sep 06 '26

I adore that movie. As much as the original Matrix is a transgender awakening story, I see Resurrections as a story about detransitioning for the sake of assimilating into a hostile world and the toll that can take on a person. The metatextual franchise sequel stuff is a bonus lol

Just do a standalone film within the universe please, it’s got infinite potential!

istg moviemakers and production companies are the least creative people on this planet atp

1

u/Average__Sausage Sep 07 '26

It's actually got insane potential. The world is so we'll designed. The history of the universe is so rich too. The Animatrix was amazing. The fact you can be infinitely creative in the world and stay within the rules is a writers dream.

9

u/amysteriousmystery Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

They are not going to be dicks about it, they will essentially give their blessing and move on, with at most maybe a couple of suggestions.

If the film is good to go with a completed script and some preproduction art and they have had no, and will have no, involvement with it, no point in saying "Thanks for asking us, but unfortunately we don't like it, we were hoping for something better and we wish you do not proceed with it". Just nod and smile and wish him luck.

3

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

I will say of all the people wanting to tackle another film I have more faith and Drew Goddard than others.

I'm also hoping that it's actually some sort of prequel that takes place in one of the prior iterations of the Matrix and doesn't touch films 1 through 4.

Although truthfully I also just would rather have more animatrix type things as anthologies than another live action.

18

u/LetItAllGo33 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

The Matrix Trilogy has given me strength in dark times, that is not an exaggeration. I've written college essays and very long internet rants on in.

As far as I'm concerned, Lily made her point clear in the fourth movie, a meta treatus of a movie on why it itself should not exist after being told "make a 4th or we'll do it with no creative inpit," and Lana made her position just as clear opting out.

If they give 5 a "blessing"  it will be for a paycheck, and in this completely broken and perverse economic system, them taking money from a studio that haven't allowed a true creative venture in over a decade is just backpay for the original trilogy, take the money and they deserve it more than David Zaslav and the other ghouls.

It'll tank because the ghouls will allow it to have no soul and be an amalgum of algorithm derived studio notes anyway. I hope they negotiate for a set fee for their "blessing" and and not a share of what will be paltry royalties.

That said, I'll be sitting out the theater release for this one whatever the outcome, I'd rather go watch a re-release of any of the first 3.

Edit: I mixed up Lily and Lana as someone correctly pointed out, apologies.

6

u/Jean-Ralphio11 Sep 06 '26

Totally agree. But I do think they could reboot the franchise of they just tell a different story. I think she would give her blessing if it was a fresh concept in the Matrix universe. Plenty of story to be told there. Go 100 years in either direction and do something different. Just leave Neo and Trinity and Smith alone. That story is told.

2

u/webshellkanucklehead Sep 06 '26

Idk if it’ll be about a paycheck, it kind of sounds like WB can do a Matrix film without them whether or not they want it to happen

6

u/LetItAllGo33 Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

It helps the media machine to be able to plaster the original creators names on the sequel, Ala "FROM THE VISIONARY MINDS/WORLD OF THE WACHOWSKIS." Which sours publically and becomes a legal mess if they don't endorse it.

Studios have long since cared far more about cultivating the prerelease campaigns for the drivel they put out now than they do about the movies themselves. That's the point to them now.

The original Trilogy was close to the sunset on art/voice/vision still having a voice in major studio projects.

And it's a misnomer that she thought the project was junk and that's why she wasn't involved, she has said numerous times she needed to grieve their parents in a different way than her sister and gave Lana her full blessing for M4.

1

u/Scruffylookin13 Sep 07 '26

Its almost like that reasoning was bullshit and they haven't made a good movie since the OG trilogy. And now that there is a chance for more money and a job, fuck them morals

5

u/ChorizoRozco Sep 06 '26

If they did make another one, I'd be happy if they focused on the fight choreography more. Hire the people behind The Furious. Even if the story is bad, at least make it have entertaining martial arts like the first 3 films.

9

u/ketchup_bro23 Sep 06 '26

4th concept was so good. But I think since only 1 of them was working of the 2 sisters, there might be that collaboration missing the magic .

The execution could have gotten so much better.

But I am glad, given the current set of movies we get to see, something so meta. Amazing.

Did a bunch of googling , to really appreciate the meta meta concept.

6

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

I personally also loved how intricately entwined the fourth movie was with the lore of the 2nd and 3rd films. I sometimes get the impression the sisters are the most proud of the second installments because they really did whatever they wanted creatively, even though the critics didn't love it, they are extremely proud of what they did with those films. I sort of feel like they like that the movies have kind of a cult following within the fandom but less so with the general public because it means that the fans really loved their weird, creative, artistic vision.

6

u/ketchup_bro23 Sep 06 '26

True. And tbh, I think the rewatch value of 4th is insane. Though a lot of unexpected vfx, the more times you see, the more the concept settles in the head.

3

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

And the one piece of memorabilia that I had always wanted from the original movies, even more than the cell phone replicas and the jackets and the sunglasses, was a replica of Oracle's kitchen sign. Which I now have, as there's people on Etsy that sell them. As it's the whole underlying concept, Know Thyself.

I've also noticed that people who have gone through more life, really connected well with the fourth film because it really does also explore themes of grief, passage of time love regrets fears, certain types of things that you don't necessarily connect with when you're younger.

3

u/SquareTheRhombus Sep 06 '26

Yeah. I think the 4th is really rewatchable. The others are a 3 movie time investment. But the 4th can be watched anytime independently.

It needs to move beyond Neo and Smith to a new generation of “The One”.

It needs to get back to the vibe of the original and move away from the parody vibe.

I’d really like to see the next iteration of the Matrix, maybe base it on today’s world rather than the end of the 20th century. Less hope, more dread and let the difference this time be that the searcher (new Morpheus) for the one (new Neo) has heard the myth that it’s a system of control and it’s his mission to awaken The One with that knowledge this time and let him search for a way to break the cycle.

3

u/AshleyAspenLeaf Sep 06 '26

Neo broke the cycle in the third film by choosing Trinity over saving Zion, but I agree with you that any sequels should be set after the robots/ai inevitably have gone back on their word, broken the peace treaty with humans.

Just because a sequel to something is unnecessary doesn't mean the lead creatives can't try to make something worth watching, something the fans think "Well, Star Wars was complete, didn't need more movies, but Mandalorian was pretty cool" tier stuff but for the Matrix Ip/series.

2

u/Illmosity3 Sep 06 '26

Drew Goddard? I just imagined a Daredevil like hallway scene in the Matrix. Goddard might cook 🤔

2

u/Outkastin2g Sep 06 '26

Back into the Matrix with you.

2

u/mrsunrider Sep 07 '26

Seems like this is still an ambition more than an actual product with a release date.

Frankly I'm not taking anything seriously til I hear shooting has begun... and maybe not even then. ~looks at batgirl and what almost happened to coyote vs. acme~

That's definitely not crazier than vaulting completed films with favorable reactions.

2

u/G1431c Sep 07 '26

Matrix 4 was super awesome though.

2

u/Choice-Sympathy8235 Sep 09 '26

The funny thing about this to me is that there could be an extremely interesting Matrix story to tell. Since 1999 our world of tech has transformed. We’ve all started falling into a real work matrix of our devices, our attention being mined to power giant tech companies. And now AI is showing signs of surpassing human intelligence, matching many aspects of human creativity. People seem more and more fascinated by Simulation Theory.

Personally I would reboot the universe. Set it today. Dig into all the anxieties of this moment. We are living right at the moment the machines have begun surpassing us.

2

u/HulkSonofThanos Sep 09 '26

Sounds like they want the franchise to end & not be a continuous franchise.

12

u/GhostRiders Sep 06 '26

Honestly, if the Wachowski's are not going to be involved I have very little interest in it.

I really wish WB just leave it alone, it stinks of desperation by them.

14

u/wookiesack22 Sep 06 '26

I dont want the wachowskis anywhere near the matrix. They gave up long ago on this world. Let others have a try at this world! Animatrix showed how many stories could be told. Matrix 4 was the stinkiest turd ive ever smelled.in the movie they even joke about how they had to make it so why not make it suck.

1

u/arachnophilia Sep 06 '26

i'll be honest, i don't care one way or the other if they are involved. i care if the movie is good and has a real reason to exist beyond being driven by business interests.

The Matrix is over.

It was over after the third film ended.

The three original films, The Animatrix, and the Enter the Matrix video game expressed a complete narrative, and a complete mythological arc.

There is nothing left to say.

Anyone who wants more Matrix doesn't understand The Matrix.

5

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

I understand the original properties just fine and have since 99' but I still absolutely adore the fourth film as a coda and proper epilogue, warts and all. Especially for Trin and Neo.

3

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 06 '26

Neo sacrificed his human life to achieve cosmic unity with a non-human intelligence, and in so doing saved both humanity and machines.

It is the most consequential event imaginable.

There's nowhere to go from there but down.

1

u/BlueCX17 Sep 06 '26

Personall, my head cannon for how Neo and Trinity could get some sort of a second chance for their sacrifice revolved around Rama Kandra and Oracle. And the reason I always speculated Rama and Oracle would do something to give Neo and Trinity a thank you for their sacrifices was because of how intrigued they were by human love and by Neo and Trinity's extreme bond and what that led to with their sacrifice. And even though you can take it many ways Oracles answer to Sati do you think we'll see him again and she says. "I suspect so, someday." To me again my little daydream went with Oracle working with Rama to give them their consciousness back.

I was pretty damn close because I had always daydreamed that Rama Kandra and Oracle created some sort of modified pod chamber(s) to rehab Neil and Trinity's bodies, although in my head Canon they weren't in separated ones but next to each other, in one big goo pod and put them back in the simulation but not as a prison being tortured the way The Analyst was doing it but is a thank you. And eventually, when their bodies were fixed, they could go back to real world. My little head cannon, way before Resurrections was ever a possibility, just didn't involve The Analyst and the breaking of the truce and such, naturally. Lol

Because what I took away from the fourth film is that Rama and Oracle had potentially already been working on this, it was The Analyst who commissioned it, originally but that The Analyst co-opted it, took it over, purged Oracle purged sati's parents and then broke the truce, of course, which led to the machine civil war.

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

You're beating it to death.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 07 '26

I mean that's fine if you think so but I sure had a lot of fun way back when, in between college classes, coming up with fun creative theories.

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

Write a screenplay.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 07 '26

Why do you need to keep commenting?

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

I say what people need to hear.

2

u/BlueCX17 Sep 07 '26

Okay, Oracle.

2

u/weed0monkey Sep 06 '26

I agree, bit another Animatrix wouldn't go amiss

3

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 06 '26

Everything must begin with a story that needs to be told.

I don't know if I need to see more stories of random people and events when the most consequential events have already been portrayed.

1

u/Traditional_Good9907 Sep 06 '26

Wouldn’t mind seeing a fully fleshed out Second Renaissance. The 15 minute clip we got wasn’t enough. Definitely a story that can be expanded on.

There is nothing left to say.

i think there might be a lot to say about AI dystopias these days.

the question is, is anyone making this movie because they want to say something? or because they need to not let trademark lapse?

1

u/DeathToAmerica2026 Sep 07 '26

The fourth film is essential to understanding this point and is probably the second best of the four, even if it is a totally different genre.

3

u/TheJack0fDiamonds Sep 06 '26

Do a series instead.

2

u/Immediate_Form7831 Sep 06 '26

Sure, but leave Keanu and Carrie-Anne out of it.

2

u/BillySlang Sep 06 '26

Bring back bullet time plz

2

u/PestyPastry Sep 06 '26

I don’t think ill ever not be excited for more Matrix :D

2

u/okcboomer87 Sep 06 '26

4 was so bad that I have no faith in any projects going forward.

2

u/LoveMachineLX Sep 06 '26

I liked Resurrections, but I didn't love it. As mentioned, the fight scenes were meh with too many quick cut edits that went against how the first three movies filmed them.

The meta narrative was great but went too far in the wrong direction. For every scene that could have critiqued how cell phones and AI have infiltrated our lives (all two of them, lasting a total of four seconds), we get triple that in scenes of characters literally telling us how great the original Matrix story was.

And was there a need for Agent Smith to come back in a different form? It was very much like Palaptine's return in the last Star Wars sequel: no asked for it, there's no great story reason behind it, it's just... there.

2

u/Igpajo49 Sep 06 '26

I think one of the reasons why the fight scenes felt off is because they needed that Don Davis score. I was not at all impressed with what Tykwer and Klimek turn in. I agree better Choreography was needed as well.

2

u/jedels88 Sep 06 '26

Also, Keanu and Carrie aren't in their 20s anymore. Obviously, Keanu can still hang since he does John Wick, but that's predominantly gunplay. I know it's a meme he doesn't age, but he certainly is not AS limber as he was for the original trilogy.

1

u/RagnerGoldcloud Sep 06 '26

idk he certainly kicked a lot of ass as John Wick so I’m not sure I buy that as much

2

u/jedels88 Sep 06 '26

You're not buying that a man in his 60s is naturally going to be less limber, flexible, and able to hang with strenuous choreography than a man 30 years younger?

1

u/Abraham_Issus Sep 06 '26

No the camera composition and camera cuts were pathetic.

2

u/Relevant_Session5987 Sep 06 '26

Nah, its not the score. Don't get me wrong, the score was forgettable but the fights' flaws in Resurrections came down to how dull the fight choreo was and how horrendously it was shot and edited. It's like the Wachowskis forgot how they did it three times before this.

1

u/DeathToAmerica2026 Sep 07 '26

the fight scenes were meh with too many quick cut edits that went against how the first three movies filmed them.

That was the point my guy

1

u/cesarxp2 Sep 06 '26

I like Drew's work and I trust him with M5, especially if the Wachowskis are giving their blessing. I think it's going to be a fresh new take. Personally, I'm excited.

3

u/Bardo77n Sep 06 '26

I generally like sequels so I'm open to the idea, but Matrix 4 is a turd, so it will be tough to come back from. I'm really generous with movies and it's hard for me to find movies that I find no redeeming qualities with (especially in franchises that I like.) Matrix 4 was a rare example of a franchise movie that I simply didn't like.

2

u/thommcg Sep 06 '26

TBH, after Resurrections, only Lilly Wachowski's input / approval may be warranted.

2

u/Sinistaire Sep 06 '26

The only good part of Resurrections was Lana roasting Warner Bros for making a forced and unnecessary sequel. But corpos just can’t take a fucking hint…

1

u/epSos-DE 2d ago

Matrix 5 is TOO much !

PREQUEL !!!!

The GOLD mine is in the PREQUEL !!!!

Matrix 4 was kind of a mixxed bag, prequel could deliver a lot more !

1

u/Slight-Independence6 Sep 06 '26

The matrix: Origins, about those two animatrix segments would be fucking rad.

1

u/UnpluggedZombie Sep 06 '26

honestly great news

1

u/EntrepreneurMain7833 Sep 06 '26

Just give Keanu Reeves a haircut and shave, please. This look has gone on for long enough.

1

u/Lofi_Joe Sep 06 '26

I do not know how you can not love your child...

1

u/UpsideDownNow Sep 07 '26

I'd love a prequel, like how the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar got together.

1

u/DeathToAmerica2026 Sep 07 '26

The matrix 4 was extremely funny. It was an artistic statement the likes of which the world has never seen and people simply werent ready for.

An original author doing that level of self-parody and flippant rug pulling should have, in any reasonable world, killed the franchise as a whole. The entire story of simulation and simulacra, down to the simulacra of the simulation story, has been done.

The idea of a Matrix 5 is ridiculous. The universe has been actually destroyed in a metanarrative way.... There's literally no-where to go from here unless it's a prequel to the originals.

1

u/Illustrious-Egg-489 Sep 07 '26

Please, just stop..

1

u/Wonderful_Cook5864 Sep 07 '26

I dunno... I think we need to admit to ourselves that Keanu is very stiff now. His movement in Matrix 1 vs the Wick movies, it's like he's got metal pipes in his legs and spine.

I think he seems like a great guy, and I absolutely love him in Matrix 1 - 3, but in Matrix 4 everything was stiff and awkward.

They also told us everything they had worth telling in 1 - 3 + animatrix. 4 felt like a single Animatrix episode expanded. I don't see how a 5th installment will be a good thing in any way.

1

u/BuzzClucking Sep 07 '26

I'll never stop laughing at this punishment for introducing these concepts into the zeitgeist.

1

u/RUIN_NATION_ Sep 07 '26

Matrix 5 needs to be a video game

1

u/Desperate_Cherry2299 Sep 07 '26

Sounds reasonable all around.

1

u/Costa_Canela Sep 07 '26

I'm not opposed to more Matrix content, with different actors and characters. I think the world the sisters built is a great setting for any story. Nothing rewrites the originals. New stuff more or less has its own canon, kind of like Dune. At least that's how it works in my mind

1

u/Pretty-Broccoli-465 Sep 07 '26

If it's not completely horrible—and it probably wouldn't be—I'll watch it. But I imagine it would go would go the same way the new Alien movie happened. After a weird uneven movie from the original director the studio clobbered together a made-by-a-committee film that while formally solid has nothing behind it's eyes.

1

u/DeliriousPrecarious Sep 08 '26

I’d love for them to do a reboot that leverages more about the current state of AI to influence the sci fi. Not exactly a hard sci-fi Matrix but one where we ground some of the fantasy in current technology. I think it would be very unsettling as it shifts some of the ideas from “are we in a simulation” to “are we creating thinking things today”.

This strikes me as something no one would want of make - least of all the wachowskis

1

u/FritzGman Sep 09 '26

The lightning in a bottle died sometime in 2003. They need to leave that legacy alone. That said, the only possible storylines I would be remotely interested in are. The Story of Morpheus - The adventures and trials of a younger Morpheus coming into the real world and freeing minds leading up to the original Matrix. Maybe something about the machines. The Matrix Chronicles - A dive into the world of exiled programs living in the Matrix. Control programs serving the machines or rogue exiles embracing human hedonism, emotions and behaviors working against Deus Ex Machina to preserve their way of life. No one from the original cast required.

1

u/Soul_Mate_4ever Sep 06 '26

I’m going to add this to the list of movies I’m looking forward to not watching.

1

u/Liquid_1998 Sep 06 '26

I'm open to another film. Drew Goddard did a great job on Project Hail Mary, so there's a chance a Matrix 5 could turn out good.

1

u/True_Protection6842 Sep 06 '26

The 4th was kind of a big fuck you to WB...I figured the Wachowskis poisoned the well enough they wouldn't bother with more. But never underestimate WB's need for more money.

1

u/nicktbristol2020 Sep 06 '26

I’d love a new matrix but obviously with the majority of the original cast. Sadly they are too old now

1

u/henzINNIT Sep 06 '26

I'm not desperate for another Matrix movie, but I like Drew Goddard enough to root for this. He's been in movie jail for ages.

1

u/handsome_uruk Sep 06 '26

They go for a spin off. I think it be really cool to have an agent Smith pov

1

u/Filmmagician Sep 06 '26

That’s actually reassuring. Classy move

1

u/amemeticpolyalloy Sep 06 '26

Why can't they just leave it alone. It will never measure up. Movies have changed and can no longer grip us like this did back then

1

u/wallstreet-butts Sep 06 '26

Please don’t.

1

u/Intrepid_Swordfish69 Sep 06 '26

Sorry but if tha wachowski's ain't involved heavy idc about another matrix film. Im good

1

u/Traditional_Good9907 Sep 06 '26

Please for the love of god give me a well produced dark and gritty “Second Renaissance” movie. If it’s good, I’ll pay to see it twice. It is so ripe for some creative writing and directing and visuals. If we rehash Neo’s story line again I stg I won’t even watch it on Netflix.

2

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

But The Second Renaissance is already complete.

It has a beginning, middle, and end. The consequences are resolved in The Matrix: Revolutions.

It has been done.

1

u/Traditional_Good9907 Sep 07 '26

I want a version that’s longer than 15 minutes. Plenty of room for detail and a lead up to the first Matrix.

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

But we already know everything that happens that is of consequence.

1

u/Traditional_Good9907 Sep 07 '26

How has that stopped anyone in history from making a movie where the source material already exists? 😂.

I want a live action movie, not a long Facebook reel. LMAO

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

You are asking for cOnTeNt.

1

u/Traditional_Good9907 Sep 07 '26

Did you watch Denis Villaneuve’s Dune or no? Did you call it “cOnTeNt”?

I want a live action cinematic version of the Second Renaissance, with more detail. Pretty plain and simple.

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

Dune is an adaptation of a book.

1

u/Traditional_Good9907 Sep 07 '26

A book which had a beginning, a middle, and an end. So did the 1984 adaptations. So did the TV adaptation.

1

u/TouchAltruistic Sep 07 '26

I don't understand.

The Wachowskis presented "The Second Renaissance"  as part of The Animatrix. The original form of the story is already in a visual medium.

What events of consequence could possibly be shown that we have not already seen?

1

u/compukiller Sep 06 '26

Just stop.

1

u/queefwellington3 Sep 06 '26

Nobody needs another matrix movie, make more animatrix

1

u/TR1CL0PS Sep 07 '26

Wait, I thought they already gave him their blessing. There was an article from two years ago about WB and Lana loving the idea Drew pitched to them and development was moving forward with Lana producing.

1

u/mrsunrider Sep 07 '26

The ambition was to get the twins involved, but when asked Lana had only heard about it, and that was it. Jump ahead to least year (or was it 2024) and Goddard was writing, but hadn't even had a pitch yet.

So far it still seems like this is only an idea more than an actual project.
