In all this sadness, it is truly heartwarming to see all the studios, actors, cosplayers, artists and fans everywhere coming together to celebrate and recognize the legacy of Bioware.

The absolute lesson in all of this:

Don't let yourself get bought out by large publishers

Yes and no, ME trilogy is as cool as it is thanks to the funding.
It's a double edged sword.

ME1 was released before EA bought BioWare and its imo best in series. ME2 and ME3 are more "epic", more everything but still I think they would be fine without EA money.

At the same time EA was not only fault and they actually gave them more chances that others. 3 flops in row(Inquisiton sold well apparently but its nowhere good as their earlier games imo) is not small amount and EA shutdown other studios for less.

I thought dragon age Inquisition was great. Just not as good as origins

I never managed to finish it, despite trying three times. 90% of the content I did felt like bloat fetch quests with only a few there and here interesting. On top of that, combat system and HUD were weird. It seemed like it was supposed to be similar to Origins, but it never clicked with me.

the problem DA:I had was its forced big open world design of the areas - and not tapping that much into the dark side of O/A/2 - characters, villains, story elsenwere good

Yeah. DA2 has a mixed opinion base but was a solid game in most areas.

DAI while great in combat, was incredibly poor in most metrics from companions, story, villain, and overall setting.

Anthem is anthem.

MEA I will always defend gameplay wise as being genuinely as great as ME3 and even better in several ways. But the story, setting, companions, and everything else was just the most uninspired and tedious BS you’d never expect for a fucking Mass Effect title.

DAVG I won’t get into. Everyone knows the controversy and it’s not worth burning my hands over.

The best game they released post ME3 was MELE which is a wild thought. It’s sad to see BioWare go, but it hasn’t been the same BioWare everyone has grown up with and loved, “We stand upon the precipice of change. The world fears the inevitable descension into the abyss. Watch for that moment... and when it comes, do not hesitate to leap.”

I agree, even though I consider the MELE to be a very mediocre and rushed remaster riddled with bugs that weren't present in the original especially regarding the visuals and I’m not a fan of the changes made to the art style in the first game. Nevertheless, I play this remaster over original, because modders are creating excellent mods for it, and it also runs more stably on modern PC than the original.

Yep! I’m never going to say MELE is perfect, but it being better than every other game I’ve mentioned is wild and a sad truth.

Well, the situation is rather funny when viewed from the perspective of ME3, Andromeda, and the MELE. BioWare wanted to distance itself from the ending of ME3 that was hated and even after it was improved it was a bit meh. They created Andromeda a game that may have been good in terms of gameplay, but was mediocre when it came to its story and characters(something I think most people play BioWare games for), not to mention the animation glitches that spawned countless memes. Looking to distance themselves from Andromeda, they decided to release the MELE.

If they would have been able to take a game that had the movement of flying in the suits like Anthem had and mix it with characters and dialogue worthy of screen time like the trilogy had with actual depth to the story, you would have had a great game.

Andromeda's movement and gunplay was Anthem light. It was a okay to good not great Mass Effect game but it didn't have as good of characters as 1-3.

They lost more and more of that over time but the combat got better (or at least more dynamic).

Yes and ME2 and 3 would have likely been better games had they not had pressure from EA to have rushed schedules.

Yeah I don't agree with this take. If Microsoft didn't hover over Chris Roberts Freelancer would never get released. Now that CR doesn't have a publisher above his head the game has turned into mission-creep vaporware.

As in most things, it's a case of 'it depends how you do it'. There are cases of corporate oversight providing really useful limitations and guidance and funding, and cases of it ruining the creative vision. It depends on the people involved and how well they work together.

Maybe but I would say its dont believe your own hype. we know they did it with Anthem despite them getting virtually a blank check from EA and they seem to have done the same on veilguard since every interview and quote I have seen has been full on "Our best game ever" "back to our roots" levels of hype both pre and post release.

Fake hype has been always there. Andromeda was also hyped to infinity, specially when we didnt know anything beyond we were a squadmate of Alec Ryder. If the whole game was about that it would have been better tbh. I resented the marketing a bit afterwards.

I kinda want CDProject to buy the studio name and the IPs, and Larian to hire the talents.

•

u/DryTie2697 1h ago

I've actually dreamed of a cyberpunk like game set on Omega lol doubt that would ever happen but just a cool thought for a ME spinoff I had in the past.

•

u/verdantsf 18m ago

Dang, that game would be amazing.

•

u/nightofgrim 13m ago

What if Larian and CD went 50/50? 🤤

•

u/Lufia_2_GOAT 1h ago

So, CDPR buys the Mass Effect IP, Larian buys Dragon Age?

A fanbase can hope, right?

•

u/gustavessidehoe 1h ago

I feel like they both have too much on their plates and Larian also has a fantasy IP. I don't have any suggestions on who would even have enough capital to buy it who could make it...

Owlcat could probably make a good DA game, but I don't think they could acquire the rights.

•

u/alelo Legion 37m ago

owlcat prob can do ME too expanse looked good

•

u/Raaaaandyyyy 38m ago

I’ll wait. I’ll just be happy having it not owned by EA

•

u/Think_Mousse_5295 1h ago

you're right, i said it in different comment but CDPR has already hands full, they work on new witcher trilogy, next cyberpunk and "hadar" i don't see how would they fit Mass Effect there

•

u/poofynamanama123 25m ago

CDPR is working on Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2, and a new IP. Witcher 4 is the beginning of a new trilogy. They have absolutely no room to work on a Mass Effect game

•

As much I loved these stories, I think its time to let them rest. Not everything needs to continue into perpetuity and maybe expecting that is part of how we got here.

I want to see whats new, what people learned from ME or DA and make their own stories inspired by them.

Just finished Baldurs gate 2 as well, one of biowares best

•

u/Kronos9898 6m ago

It is Bioware's best. There is a reason you will see it in the top games of all time quite commonly.

Until Witcher 3, you would commonly see it as the greatest western RPG every made, and many would say just the best RPG made period.

It did so many things first, and did them well.

•

u/Archmikem 1h ago

"I hope you all land well."

With the way the gaming industry is going, that's a pointless wish.

•

u/verdantsf 17m ago

Great to see the love from other dev teams.
