DISCUSSION About the possible future of Mass Effect without BioWare

Hey guys, absolutely wrecked by the closure of BioWare. More so by the fact that the new Mass Effect is scrapped. Or is it?

I mean, EA owns the rights to the game right? Can't they technically just award those right to some other studio they own, if the demand for a new Mass Effect was high enough at some point.

This is just wishful thinking i know, but I don't want to lose hope.

Unless EA sells the IP or hires a studio to work on it, Mass Effect will remain on hold forever.

It won't happen. EA doesn't sell licences.

They didnt use to. But they're owned by chop shop venture capitalists and the Saudis now.

They seem to only want to be the Madden and FIFA company and could care less about much else.

It's possible but i really wouldn't get your hopes up, i think this is writing on the wall for EA.

EA clearly wants to focus on live-service games now. ME isn't one of those.

Either they shelve the franchise or sell it.

Sadly, Mass Effect is going the way of Firefly. They'll hold on to the IP and not let anyone touch it.

The only way that will change is if someone acquires EA (Like Disney did with Fox).

Well, they are privately owned now by that Saudi private equity firm. They may want some fast cash infusion….probably just hopeful thinking though 😭

Otherwise I agree, old EA would definitely just ice the whole IP

I'm honestly not even remotely interested in a new ME game made by any EA studio. It's not like they do much more than Battlefield and sports games and even though the Jedi games are good, I'm not interested in an ME game from Respawn

My biggest hope is that they sell the IP to CD Projekt Red, but that's never gonna happen

I doubt anything will happen anytime soon. But, given the game was still in early development clearly nothing was happening anyway. So we're in the same situation as before, except there is no zero chance of a new game

I doubt they’d sell it. Corporate culture is so, SO toxic and greedy now. I’m sure they’d rather just sit on it and let it rot than let someone else use it. The foreseeable future of AAA games is pretty bleak. I expect almost exclusively safe bet games that feel like they were made off the same template and for AI slop to worm its way into the dev process.

Correct, EA owns the IP. It should be noted, EA owns a lot of IPs that they could have sold at any time but otherwise have just sat on.

They can, in theory, hire a team to do it in the future. It's not impossible. But for a lot of reasons, it's also not something I would bet on, either.

Even if EA would try to sell the IP - who's gonna buy it? I mean, let's face it - the golden days of Mass Effect are long gone. The series is way past its prime, it's not as popular as it used to be. And if only that, it's even toxic to a degree because living up to the expectations all the fans have for a theoretical sequel is impossible. Besides, there're like three RPG companies that can afford to buy an IP like Mass Effect and develop a game on that scale. CDPR and Larian have their hands full for the foreseable future. And modern Bethesda is a joke.

I think the real question is, what’s the future of that Mass Effect TV show?

They could get a studio some year who is really passionate and convinces them to create a new game, like the team that did Dead Space Remake, which was actually really fucking solid and not at all made by the original dev team.

But Mass Effect I Wouldn't be that interested in a remake. I only want sequels and prequels, and I'd be open to a Non-BioWare Mass Effect, but it isn't the same if there's NOBODY involved who had anything to do with either of the first 3 games. And ME5 at least had a bunch of those. But then, a lot of those also made Anthem, so I'm also fully acknowledging that we could've gotten ME5 and it wouldn't have been good in any capacity.

But based on that initial teaser it got my thoughts racing, and it just felt right. I'm at least glad we ever got on that trail of "There is a sequel after the shitty endings of ME3" and it had Liara and stuff. I definitely wonder what it would've been like, but I'm also okay with not getting a game that would've made me curse the studio all over again. I'd almost argue Veilguard wasn't worth making. Even the biggest Dragon Age Inquisition fans didn't really appreciate that game.

Stage 3: Bargaining.

The Saudis have made clear they bought EA for live service (mostly sports).

Impossible no. Wing Commander is getting remastered, but TBH they’re probably going to run the source code through Claude and call it a day.

Probable, only if they start slicing out all the IP EA owns to sell.

Do you really want another studio handling it?

•

to this point. yes what the worst it could happend?

•

If another studio was interested then they could buy the rights and have their pick of the development team that got laid off a la what Kitten Space Agency is doing after Kerbal Space Program 2 was canceled.

•

Did you really want BioWare handling it?

Honestly, I don’t care about seeing a new Mass Effect, and I have a feeling I’m not the only one. Maybe in a few decades, after EA sells the IP to someone worthy, but as long as it’s in their hands, just let it rest and get into something else, that’s what I say.

It’s over dude.

Whatever mass effect would’ve been produced by the current incarnation of BioWare, would’ve been dreadful and severely flawed.,

I truly wish for a new ME game... but... Like there is no Shepard without Vakarian... There is no Mass Effect without Bioware.
