I hope EA sells off their IPs

•

u/Sabi-In-Winter 7h ago

I hope EA dies an ignominious death, frankly. Sod the IPs at this point.

•

Didn’t EA already die off, though? The company was bought out by Saudi investors last month.

•

u/FarShade5648 6h ago

No, EA just went from being public to private. They didn’t shutdown or go bankrupt or anything like thst.

•

u/FlyingSquirelOi 6h ago

And given that they’ve got Saudi money now they aren’t going bankrupt anytime soon

•

u/Sweaty_Ranger7476 4h ago

the Saudis 'buying' them saddled EA with $20 billion in debt. shouldn't be allowed to buy a company out with borrowed monies.

•

u/deadlygaming11 3h ago

It makes no sense how you can borrow money to buy a company then move that debt to them. Musk did it with Twitter as well

All the same executives are there and making absolute bank while firing off all the people that made them rich.

EA killed C&C and all RTS games they are scum. Hopefully the next Fifa Flops hard.

•

u/TelevisionExpress616 5h ago

Unfortunately EA could release the next FIFA game with the only update being a massive “Fuck you We knew you’d buy this shit” text displayed on the Title Screen and it’ll still gross $500+ million

Modern vulture venture capitalism, doing something other than hoarding things so they can rent them out? Seems like wishful thinking.

I like the typo.

EA has 18 billion in debt, this on top of the 55 billion paid for EA, so unless someone like Microsoft or Sony are willing to drop at the very least a high 8 figure it’s not getting made, the only hope is the show does good enough that they outsource remastering the games and releasing them and if they do good we might get a new game

•

The show's in development (not in production), and hasn't been given a series order yet as far as I can tell. The odds of that actually going anywhere now feels slim, and it's hardly rare for TV shows to die in development.

The best odds, really, are that EA's new owners are mainly concerned about asset stripping EA, the way a different group did to Toys R Us a few years back. It's called a leveraged buyout: buy a company by taking out massive loans, saddle it with the debt you took on to buy it, sell off everything it owned to pay off the debts, declare bankruptcy, and walk away with the profits. Someone might buy Mass Effect in amongst the fire sale as EA's corpse is plundered for parts.

•

u/SHansen45 7h ago

got me thinking, they do what you said but walk away with FC which pulls a billion per quarter apparently

•

u/GreedyBadger- 3h ago

The saudis paid 55 billion for a company 18 billion in the whole?

•

u/SHansen45 2h ago

missread it, they paid 55 but took out loans from JP Morgan and leveraged it on the buyout, they basically stuck the loan on EA

•

u/GreedyBadger- 2h ago

Ahhh got it !

•

u/matthieuC 7h ago

It might be an option now that they're in private equity mode.
They're never investing in making a new one with the new model and they need the cash

Vulture capitalists usually DO sell IPs they get hold of off, actually. Or licence them out, often quite cheaply.

I'm not sure why you think they don't. That EA didn't sell off or licence out its IPs was fucking weird and actually kind of against the capitalist ethos.

EDIT - Shit you say exactly what I did in a later post lol...

•

I was hoping for switch 2 Mass Effect Legendary Edition version

•

u/OdysseyPrime9789 7h ago

Hopefully, but when have they ever done that? EA is basically the corporate graveyard, has been for decades. C&C TW4 was a mess, Veilguard was a mess, Andromeda had the bones of potential and could’ve been used as the starting point for a new trilogy but it was a buggy mess at launch, the list goes on and on.

•

u/TheNittanyLionKing 7h ago

I think Mass Effect will get licensed out. The merchandise still probably does good business. Dragon Age could get sold off entirely though if someone wants it.

•

u/Templar_96 7h ago

EA's strategy since the '90s is to buy up as much IP as possible. You have a better chance of Smaug giving you his horde than of EA parting with a single IP.

•

u/taylorpilot 6h ago

Ea was just acquired by Saudis and Jared kushner. No way they’re doing that shit

•

u/midnightshadow0005 4h ago

We both know they won’t, it’s EA they have a nasty habit of sitting on IPs for decades on the vague promise of maybe doing something with it.

•

u/squirrelems 4h ago

It'd be nice. They've been sitting on American McGee's Alice for ages and won't do fuck-all with it even though it has a decent cult following. Let EA just have all its sports bullshit and sell the IPs off to other companies that might actually make use of them.

•

u/survivor686 7h ago

In theory, and only in theory, the more 'involved' sovereign pension funds (CDPQ is one of the more 'heavily involved' funds) could acquire a stake in the IP, with the view towards diversifying into the tech-side and keeping operations within Quebec's videogame development sector.

•

u/GethSynth 7h ago

Me too. But I doubt it.

•

u/TailSwipeTypo 7h ago

Highly doubtful. Theres no rules telling them they have to, I personally think it should be illegal to hoard IPs you dont intent to use

•

u/Deya_The_Fateless 4h ago

Same! Sell Mass Effect and Dragon Age to either CDPR or Larian. They'd do a better job with the IP than WA/BioWare ever did. Hell, Bethesda would do a better job with either IP at this point.

•

u/HateKnuckle 1h ago

They definitely won't. They'll do what Konami did with MGS. They'll do shitty mobile games and/or gambling.
