New advertising rule

Recently we have had lots of advertising spam in the subreddit so we have implemented a new rule:

Rule 3:

Advertising a brand new game you made is fine as long as it is secure, safe, and free. What is not ok is linking your Patreon or other things that will make you revenue including paid games.

This subreddit is meant for educational purposes and is not an advertising dump. You should post maps only to get educational feedback and to improve your creation.

Posts/comments are removed at moderator discretion but feel free to reach out to us if you feel like your post/comment was incorrectly removed.

If you need any clarification feel free to reply to this post or message the mod team

Resource Free resource: Dreamopolis - a browser tool that generates medieval town maps you can edit by hand and use for whatever

Dreamopolis is a free browser tool that generates medieval fantasy town maps.

What it does

  • Generates a walled town in one click: streets, a market square, buildings, gates, rivers, farmland and a castle.
  • Shapes the town from a short survey: its main trade (such as Port, Crafts, Military or Scholarship), its terrain and its water.
  • Lets you edit everything by hand afterward: roads, walls, rivers, zones and single buildings.
  • Exports PNG, JPG or PDF.

Terms

  • Free. You need no account to generate, edit or export.
  • The maps are yours, including for commercial use, with no attribution needed.
  • Guest PNG exports carry a small "Made with Dreamopolis" mark. Signed-in exports do not.

The layout comes from hand-written rules based on studies of real medieval towns. The maps are not AI-generated. AI coding tools helped me write the app.

I want your feedback. Dreamopolis is in public beta, and I change it based on what people tell me. Tell me what is broken, what is missing and what you would want from a tool like this. Use the Feedback button in the app's top bar, reply here, or post on Discord. The more feedback I get, the better!

Resource Twisted Matt Drawings, a fantasy cartographer from Italy

Hi everyone!

I'm Matteo, a fantasy cartographer from Italy, and I wanted to introduce my little corner of the internet: Twisted Matt Drawings.

I mostly draw fantasy maps for tabletop RPGs, including dungeons, caves, wilderness locations, and the occasional map inspired by classic gamebooks.

I've been sharing my maps, creative projects, and occasional free downloads on my blog:

https://mattdrawings.wordpress.com/

Feel free to take a look! I'd love to hear what you think and connect with fellow mapmakers and RPG enthusiasts.

Happy mapping!

Bone Heads Bar and Grill is a place the undead can finally rest. This Giant Skull, made from the remains of a Death Titan, now serves a new purpose.
Do you have too many restless dead in need of a vacation?
Too many angry zombies just getting in the way?
Send them on down to Bone Heads, where they can get some eternal rest.
Free from the monotony of chase, kill, wait.

This 25x25 skull-shaped map is free on the Steam Community Workshop. I had a ton of fun making it and wanted to share it.
For those of you with Dungeon Alchemist, you can download it and have fun.
Happy Spooky season, everyone!

Let's be real... if the author didn't know who made this map, they wouldn't hate it so much. Am I wrong to empathize with Ross's amateur mapmaking?

Map The Sundered Realms: a hand-drawn archipelago, ink and stamps on paper

Post image
62 Upvotes

A continent that broke into five realms. I drew the coastlines, rivers and roads by hand in ink and coloured the rivers with a teal marker. The landmarks (castles, towers, villages, forests, mountains and ruins) are rubber stamps I illustrated myself.

A few things I tried on this one:

  • Double coastline with hatching to separate land from sea without colouring the water.
  • Rivers in colour and roads in grey, so they don’t get confused at a glance.
  • Small islands along the edges, to break up the open sea and suggest the old land underneath.

Any feedback is welcome, especially on the composition. I’m not sure whether the empty sea in the centre works or feels too empty.

Map I am very sorry if this is the wrong place, but does anyone know the map-making software behind this fantasy map? I have looked, and it doesn't seem to be wonderdraft or Inkarnate? Thanks in advance

Discussion I'm leaning on AI hard. Where should I not use AI as a crutch?

I've really enjoyed getting into worldbuilding, and since I started creating my own, I hit a massive roadblock of wanting to build a scientifically viable planet. 3-4 months go by where I'm still stuck making my world map, and I decided to use AI until I got to the parts I was enthusiastic about which is the development and interaction between civilizations.

Once I was satisfied with my land masses, I fed it to ChatGPT and had it build out every layer from plate tectonics to the biomes. Now that my imagination is past the perfectionist roadblock of wanting a perfect foundation, I can start simulating civilizations with my own imagination and what I've learned.

Here's my Inkarnate landmasses. I figured this would be less annoying to people than my AI finished map. Should I commission someone to make the finished product?

Resource Build a planet with Tectonic History in minutes, for free!

I have a new update to Orogen, the procedural map generation tool I've been building.

You can now generate a planet fully constructed via tectonic history via a new mode called Orogen Evolution. When you find a moment you like, hit "add detail" to generate fine grained terrain, climate, and a satellite map. You can then export the map and do whatever you want with it.

You can also upload your own maps and have it generate the climate using Orogen Import

And if you want something fast, you can use Orogen Classic to get a whole planet in just seconds.

This tool is and will always be open source and free for everyone!

Evolution is currently in beta, and optimized primarily for desktop right now (though it should work on mobile). Please let me know anything you like or hate, feature requests you want, or bugs you find. I'll be looking through all the comments here.
