u/Talgrath Jace Did Several Things Wrong 8h ago
I mean, technically speaking this would be a cup of hot tea plus all the glass shards if you're hurling it at someone. Given that shock can't kill a normal human like [[Abzan Falconer]], this sort of makes sense.

u/Infinite_Sandwich895 Wabbit Season 8h ago edited 7h ago
I mean the falconer is a soldier in armor, a normal human would be like, a 1/1 human token.

Normal humans are 1/1. Training a falcon apparently makes someone stronger than many iterations of Spider Man.

now i want a vehicle called Gravy Train and an exhaust ability called Biscuit Wheels where it becomes an artifact creature. (Edit: once you exhaust it with Biscuit Wheels every time it gets tapped it generates either a Food or Treasure token)

u/PageChase Dimir* 8h ago
Gavin, please listen to this fine person. Or a legendary artifact that has bonuses for how many food artifacts you have on it. Like it gives all your creatures the features of the food (like the indestructible nutrient block from EoE), or makes a 1/1 rabbit token when it ETBs like Carrot Cake, or lets you scry like Candy Trail.

Unsure about a food deck, but I am planning out a bracket 1 New York deck. https://moxfield.com/decks/vfvLketRfkueEzTppa6HdQ. The premise of the deck is, everything in it is mundane. It has stuff like chain saw, hot soup, knife, rocket launcher. The lands are all real world type of places like kitchen and library. Even choice of commander is the most mundane human.

They just errata'd every book to be a book, hot soup not being errata'd to a food is a crime.
42
u/Blaze_1013 Jack of Clubs 9h ago
Sadly being a food comes with mechanical baggage and it must have the 2, tap, sac: gain 3 so Hot Soup definitionally can’t be food. It is just too hot.
52
u/CrossXhunteR Wabbit Season 9h ago
and it must have the 2, tap, sac: gain 3
This isn't defined by the rules, it is just a design convention that they follow as to not upset player expectations. See [[Ginger, Queen of Sweets]], [[Pizza Face, Gastromancer]], [[Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender]], and [[Vegetation Abomination]] for how they sometimes play around with this templating.
9
u/CaptainMarcia 9h ago
Out of 25 Food cards as of Reality Fracture, there are:
- 16 with the standard line "2, T, Sacrifice ~: You gain 3 life."
- 4 cards with direct upgrades to the standard line. [[Candy Trail]] and [[Bagel and Schmear]] also draw a card, [[Dimension X Pizzasaur]] also makes your opponents lose life, and [[Ginger, Queen of Sweets]] gains 6 life instead.
- 2 others have effects with mostly-equivalent costs. [[Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender]] gains life equal to her power (which default to 3), while [[Three Bowls of Porridge]] has a mode where you sacrifice it and gain life but it happens as part of the resolution.
- The last three cards change the mana requirement. [[Vegetation Abomination]] doesn't need any mana and gains a d6 worth of life, which averages to 3.5. [[Everything Pizza]] costs 2WUBRG to sacrifice and has the lifegain alongside four other effects. [[Pizza Face, Gastromancer]] multiplies both the cost and the lifegain to 10 and 15, respectively.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (5)3
u/Blaze_1013 Jack of Clubs 9h ago
Yea I didn’t realize we had a few cards without that template. I’d just assumed with how most food does have it that it was baked into the rules.
6
u/flowerafterflower 8h ago
The part that's baked into the rules are the predefined tokens like food, treasures, clues, etc, so that if an effect says "make a food token" the game immediately knows what that means. It's just not written in such a way that it applies to the entire subtype.
2
u/mariomaniac432 COMPLEAT 8h ago
An easy way to know when something is or isn't an implicit ability of a subtype is the use of reminder text. If this was an implicit ability of food, the sac to gain life effect would be reminder text, much like the mana abilities on non-basic lands with basic land types.
4
u/Ok_Community_383 Dan 9h ago
It doesn't though. It's a design constraint on food now, but there's nothing requiring it to have that. It can be a food without 2 t sac gain 3.
2
u/Blaze_1013 Jack of Clubs 9h ago
You’re right that we do have food without the gain 3. That said every food still has some form of “sac gain life” so I imagine that’s still the issue for why they wouldn’t.
5
u/knight_of_solamnia Sliver Queen 9h ago
This might be the only food that's a crime... jokes aside wizards seems to really want their non token versions of the evergreen tokens to have the activated ability. *
