Would it really be so broken to let you keep no max hand size?

11

u/Interesting-Math9962 Duck Season 1d ago

Maybe just bc it’d be annoying to keep track of?

43

u/Waytogo33 Dân 1d ago

As someone who has cast sea gate restoration, no, it is not annoying to keep track of.

11

u/Kanin_usagi Twin Believer 1d ago

If anything it makes things easier. “Now I never have to worry about hand size limits”

5

u/WolfGuy77 1d ago

Honestly, I find this MORE annoying to keep track of just because cards like this historically give you no max hand size for the rest of the game, so when my brain sees "no max hand size" on a non-permanent I just automatically assume it's for the rest of the game. I read this card twice and didn't even realize that it was only for a turn until I saw a comment in this thread pointing it out.

3

u/imbolcnight 1d ago

Especially since the effect doesn't only last until end of turn. It lasts a round of turns. Which functionally doesn't mean much at all currently, but it's an unusual length of time on top of remembering the effect ends.

1

u/Ouaouaron 23h ago

If it only lasted until end of turn and something caused your turn to have multiple cleanup steps, the effect would end and you would have to discard down to your normal hand size.

98

u/FlavorsofPie 🔫 1d ago

Probably yeah. [[Sea Gate Restoration]] is crazy good and doesn't double your life total and can be countered. [[Finale of Revelation]] costs 12 to have permanent no max hand size.

243

u/UI-Yamcha Twin Believer 1d ago

Sea gate is good because it doubles as a land. This can only be cast as a 7 mana sorcery.

12

u/Perspectivelessly Duck Season 15h ago

In fact, the sorcery side of Sea Gate is crappy as fuck. You'd never put that card in a deck if it didn't have the option to play it as a land. Similarly this card is also crap and it would not have been remotely broken to get no max hand size for the rest of the game. In fact, it would still be crap even if it did give that.

u/nekronics Banned in Commander 1d ago edited 1d ago

Here I am thinking this card is bordering on being one of the worst cards ever printed

38

u/desire-us Wabbit Season 1d ago

RIGHT. I’m looking at a 7 mana do thing on board at sorcery speed. I can’t wait for someone to prove me wrong but… I just don’t see it happening

14

u/TerribleTransit Dân 1d ago

Does nothing on board, but doubling your life total is usually a pretty big help to surviving the tempo hit that's the usual problem of cards that don't affect the board. I'm not sure the card draw is actually worth the cost on average, though.

24

u/Arborus Banned in Commander 1d ago

By the time you can cast a 7 mana sorcery in 60 card formats it's probably not that much life gain and in commander your life total rarely matters since there are so many infinites and "you win the game" effects available.

12

u/ScaryFoal558760 Duck Season 1d ago

Even in limited this thing is ass lol

1

u/ChaseballBat Duck Season 1d ago

But by the time you can actually afford this?

8

u/Hurricaneshand Dan 1d ago

Was thinking the same thing when I first saw it. Feels like the 50 cent mythic from back in the day that the card shop would feel bad if you cracked it in front of them and they give you a free pack

2

u/figzitgo 22h ago

and reliquary tower requires a land drop.

6

u/furscum Can’t Block Warriors 1d ago

Sea gate is only good in commander and is also a land and finale of revelation is chaft

9

u/showmeagoodtimejack Wabbit Season 1d ago

would you play a 1 mana sorcery that gets rid of the hand size limit for the rest of the game? probably not. because that effect is near worthless

7

u/Hurricaneshand Dan 1d ago

There's a 0 mana artifact and it's unplayable [[Spellbook]]

3

u/CaptainPandemonium Duck Season 22h ago

Spellbook is absolutely playable, albeit worse than a lot of other similar cards, but playable nonetheless.

It is a 0 mana artifact, which is meaningful for an insane amount of cards and strategies. Cheerios decks can run it instead of other 0 mana artifacts and function the exact same.

The effect might be next to worthless, but the card type and cost skyrocket spellbook near infinitely past a 1 mana sorcery with the same ability when it comes to playability.

1

u/CaptainShrimps Selesnya* 16h ago

Yeah the point is that the no max hand size effect is worthless

1

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 1d ago

1

u/Perspectivelessly Duck Season 15h ago

Hey that's gonna be a staple once Book Tribal rules the world

0

u/Tuss36 22h ago

The difference is it being extra value you probably don't need when something like this would likely already push you so far ahead in its intended scenario. You will likely win the game the turns after casting this, but it doesn't need a "You can't lose the game for the rest of the game" rider.

6

u/Teen_In_A_Suit Wabbit Season 1d ago

Sea Gate Restoration is an MDFC land that can enter untapped, so it's never stuck in your hand early in the game and the deckbuilding opportunity cost is really low because you can just put it in an Island's slot.

8

u/gelflin1 Dan 1d ago

I mean compared to [[Praetor's Counsel]] for example it is not that crazy I would say, and that one doesn't see that much play really.

1

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 1d ago

3

u/Darkon-Kriv Wabbit Season 1d ago

Is it? It seems to slow for all but the slowest edh decks. I mean you can play it as a land but I meant actually putting it in your deck with an idea to willingly cast it.

3

u/Specific_Ad1457 Colossal Dreadmaw 21h ago

It's a land with the upside of being an oh shit I flooded out button in an emergency (or if you have synergy with big spells or cheating spells or ramping). It's very good but only because it's a normal ass land first and foremost.

3

u/Darkon-Kriv Wabbit Season 21h ago

Yeah. Calling it "crazy good" seems like a crazy overstatement lol.

1

u/Specific_Ad1457 Colossal Dreadmaw 21h ago

Agreed. Utility lands thar enter untapped and make colored mana are amazing, but it's not something that's gonna warp your game most of the time or vastly improve your decks consistency. Unlike cards like Sink into Stupor, Shatterskull Smashing, or even Malakir Rebirth where the frontside is actually relevant enough to my average game for me to call them "crazy good"

1

u/Darkon-Kriv Wabbit Season 20h ago

I would call them solid. Not like crazy good.

2

u/Specific_Ad1457 Colossal Dreadmaw 20h ago

They're cards that are almost always correct to play and make most decks that don't have them better with their inclusion. If that doesn't make them crazy good I don't know what does.

1

u/Little-Maximum-2501 Duck Season 15h ago

It's absolutely not "almost always correct to play" Seagate restoration in formats where life matters.

0

u/Darkon-Kriv Wabbit Season 20h ago

Solid. It makes them solid. Generally strong but not game changing

0

u/Specific_Ad1457 Colossal Dreadmaw 20h ago

You and I have very different interpretations of those words then.

→ More replies

2

u/nimbusnacho COMPLEAT 22h ago

This is 7 mana. Thatd be totally fine. We have other stuff just like it in the same range [[wisdom of ages]]. Yes this gains you life but also sea gate can be a land. They all have their own use cases.

1

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 22h ago

2

u/Ouaouaron 23h ago edited 23h ago

They might just think it makes for undesirable gameplay experiences: people taking too long to look through their massive hand every time something happens in case they have a response, etc.

3

u/BlurryPeople 1d ago

No...I'm not sure why they did that. This is a 7cmc card. The value of "no maximum hand size" is literally a 1 mana effect in [[Wizard Class]] or [[Library of Leng]], or nothing in [[Reliquary Tower]]. It's not that big of a deal, but I really think nitpicky safety valves often kill the vibe. They should have just let you keep your hand.

1

u/whutcheson 22h ago

And yet, [[Wisdom of Ages]]

4

u/Whydoughhh Dan 22h ago

Huh. No max hand size is literally a 0 cmc ability, so it’s weird they didn’t just give it here. Maybe they intend for you to keep wisdom of the ages on the battlefield somewhere once it’s exiled as like a pseudo emblem?

1

u/mtgcf Keeper of the Mox 22h ago

247

u/FAASTARKILLER Dandadan 1d ago

This might be the most win more-est card to ever win more while also having potential to be 7 mana do damn near nothing lol

100

u/KillFallen Liliana 1d ago edited 1d ago

Its literally unusable. It requires you to have manageable life total already AND cards in hand to do anything at all. 7 mana should be a dominating play and if you have 5 life and top deck this hellbent you would be better off with timely reinforcements lmao

100

u/DivinePotatoe Orzhov* 1d ago

Imagine being at 1 with no hand and you topdeck "pay 7 mana to gain 1 life and draw 0 cards" lmfao

8

u/Perspectivelessly Duck Season 15h ago

Hey, that's "pay 7 mana to gain 1 life, draw 0 cards and have no maximum hand size until next turn" to you

1

u/NotWhatWeExpected Duck Season 8h ago

Holy shit, the /r/magicthecirclejerking prophecy has come true. We now officially have a 7 mana white spell that says "gain 1 life"

1

u/B1G_Fan Dandadan 23h ago

Sphinx’s Revelation is definitely a better alternative IMO

2

u/Vorsmyth Duck Season 23h ago

Literally the only use i can think of is if you are playing a ton of control mirrors and you sideboard it for just that matchup.

1

u/Hanifsefu Wabbit Season 17h ago

Then you lose for paying 7 mana for a sorcery while they play almost exclusively on your turn. There's just nowhere for this card.

0

u/Ayjayz Wabbit Season 1d ago

Well being worse than Timely Reinforcements is not necessarily a slight, that's a great card.

26

u/Acecn Dandadan 1d ago

I can't fathom why they decided this needed to be a sorcery. Still unplayable garbage even at instant speed.

5

u/Mogoscratcher Twin Believer 1d ago

I mean it's pretty clearly something you're supposed to cheat out. I'm sure it feels a lot better when you get it off of something like [[Archmage's Newt]] or [[Founding The Third Path]] or [[The Dawning Archaic]].

4

u/Jardin_the_Potato Dandadan 1d ago

third path only lets you cheat a 1 or 2, the third step you still have to pay mana for

3

u/moonMoonbear Dan 1d ago

I'm throwing together a B2 [[Will, Scion of Peace]] deck that turns lifegain into tokens and this feels just splashy/jank enough to fit in perfectly.

1

u/royalbluemage Dandadan 11h ago

Isnt this back breaking for a control deck if they haven't been overrun by aggro?

0

u/Specific_Ad1457 Colossal Dreadmaw 21h ago

It's very food in specifically my Hope Estheim deck that's running psychic corrosion ans friends for no good reason other than I like them.

Otherwise yeah I agree seems ass.

-1

u/Loose_Log_6253 Azorius* 20h ago edited 20h ago

Yes, this was my exact assessment. However, if you can cheat this out early like with [[Windbrisk Heights]] or [[Yennett]], and cast this on turn 4-5, you probably win the game, or at least reach a position where you cannot lose the game. This is a modern Sphinx's Rev in a lot of ways.

I think the lifegain itself isn't amazing, but I think it's also easy to underestimate how much life someone might gain from this. In a Jeskai Revelation deck in Standard, you can cast this on turn 5 and get to 40+ life and 17 cards in hand for instance. (Edit: actually looking at the art, I wonder if WOTC told them to mirror Jeskai Revelation. the swirl looks very similar)

At it's best, this is the new [[Sphinx's Revelation]], though that was an instant which matters a lot here. At worst, it's a 7-mana do nothing. Rock bottom floor, medium-high ceiling in a control deck.

u/Cautious_Handle2547 Wabbit Season 1d ago edited 1d ago

My [[Hope Estheim]] deck is already a beast but will probably find a way to slot this as any life doubler in Hope is a game ender.

Edit: I'll get a list up as soon as my kid is asleep!

Edit 2: https://moxfield.com/decks/cviBRf-1ZUqpToc0fb1dfg

Edit 3:

I can't remember why I put The Book of Exalted Deeds in my deck so I'd probably remove that and slot this card in.

That's where my thought went with this immediately. This is damn near a kill the table spell for Hope.

Did you get that sneak card from tmnt that mills half s library for 2 with sneak?

6

u/narfidy 1d ago

Does "doubling your life total" actually gain you the life for the Hope trigger? Its my wife's favorite deck

21

u/Xaphnir Dandadan 1d ago

Whenever your life total changes, if it increases it counts as life gain, if it decreases it counts as life loss.

29

u/Cautious_Handle2547 Wabbit Season 1d ago

Yes, it does. [[Beacon of Immortality]] for example is also a great game ender in Hope.

10

u/JdeFalconr Demonic Hordes 1d ago

Yes, and the doubling doubles again with things like [[Rhox Faithmender]] or [[Boon Reflection]]. So if your life was at 40 and you played this card with Rhox in play then you'd gain 80 life.

6

u/LordZeya 1d ago

Any and all effects that change your life total (even those that set it to a specific value like Sorin Markov) count as life loss and life gain.

u/WanderingLostNeko Dan 1d ago

2

u/Lilium_Vulpes Can’t Block Warriors 1d ago

Did you maybe used to have a land that turns into a creature with changeling previously? You have a land that can turn into a creature you control and you have an angel in the deck. It's not uncommon to see people who turn a land into an angel for a turn then use Book of Exalted deeds to put a counter on that creature land so that after the turn ends the land stops being a creature but still has the effect granted by the Book due to having the counter.

1

u/Leo_Knight_98 Wabbit Season 8h ago

If you have a manland that turns into all creature types/an angel it can make you near unkillable, it used to be a thing in standard

This is cool and all, but is it just me or does this feel overcosted by today's standard?

Gaining life (usually) doesn't win you the game. Drawing cards is great, but you're spending 7 mana at sorcery speed for this.

Idk. Feels fun and flavorful, but also fairly casual. Like the Azorius version of dropping a big 9/9 vanilla creature or something.

12

u/CaptainKungPao138 Dan 1d ago

It’s a commander card for sure

6

This is pretty nasty in any deck that relies on “when you gain life, your opponent loses that much life” effects. These decks are usually orzhov, dimir or mono black so might need to splash an extra colour, but this could win the game out of nowhere. Especially if you also have Bloodletter of Aclazotz or similar out.

14

u/johnnylemon95 Dân 1d ago

But for 7 mana, plus whatever other cards you decide to need, it’s an expensive combo. There are other, cheaper ways to win.

2

Feels win-more in most situations. This can't refill your hand when you're out of gas and is a terrible top deck. With a full grip you probably have better things to spend seven mana on. And it's sorcery speed in colors that would really rather draw/go.

This could be interesting in my [[Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign]] deck. This deck require a lot of top deck manipulation, and with black in the pips open up graveyard shenanigans.

I have [[Narset, Enlightened Master]]deck that I just throw random powerful expensive mana spells in there for funsy and this is definitely going in it!

Is this good enough to hang in the [[Jeskai Revelation]] deck?

Absolutely not, this card is completely unplayable. Jeskai Rev is good because the reward for its heavy mana cost is such a huge swing that it stabilizes you even from insanely bad positions.

If you're already low on life and cards then this card reads "tap out for nothing."
