Because ive been wanting to switch from windows to Linux and I recently found out about mint so I tried it out on distrosea.com and I liked it but is jt good for gaming and other stuff such as using 3d printing software like bambu studio is it also good for "first" approach to Linux because I'm not to familiar with linux (pc specs 12gb DDR4 RAM amd ryzen 5 5000 series with amd Radeon graphics inside it 512gb NVME SSD) and most of the games I play work on the steam deck

Bought if from a old Lady at a yard sale. Her daughter really wanted to sell the stuff that was there. They thought there was nothing on there but I found some personal information, including her SS number. The first install came up with a kernel panic so I did another install after l booted up in compatibility mode and waited until it was done updating before installing software and it appears fine now. It has 16 gigabytes of RAM, Intel i5, and 500 gigabyte hard drive. I also have a external USB 3.0 2 TB HDD I got super cheap at another yard sale to go with it.

I like gnome, but I also hate the feeling of breaking it when customizing it so...

In Cinnamon I rewrote some parts of the orchis theme to my liking and made a simple custom menu icon, also re-purposed the HP logo for the ascii art and colored in to sort of form a LM, if you see it, you see it (its for me to like).

Overall I enjoy Cinnamon the best, but just like many dislike the preset theme (no hate intended for those who do or the LM team).

Exited for the Adrien release!

Discussion Why I like linuxmint

I'm new to linux and I've been distro hopping for a while.

I started it with my old laptop that dosent even have a gpu , windows was killing it so I installed Ubuntu on it, but it was still laggin so I tried to install Arch Linux as a beginner and completly bricked my system with sudo rmrf, months later I somehow managed to unbrick it with a new ubuntu installation. then i installed debian , deleted it and then i installed pop Os on it and it worked relatively well. (4 GB ram btw) I mainly use it for light coding and watching videos or as a secondary monitor.

On my second laptop with a GTX1650 and 16GB ram , I got sick of windows and its ads, i debloated windows but it was still taking up space, then I installed Kali OS only to realise its not a daily drive. then i installed Parrot OS, It was good but I cant get my Nvidia Graphics Card to work on it so I went back to windows.

Finnally I got sick of windows again, they made word paid and disabled the ability to download word, excel 2021 so Ive been using Libre Office and not to mention random updates even after I disabled and debloated it. Since most tools I use are already opensource I decided to Install LinuxMint after binging lot of YT videos

For the first time my NVIDIA graphics card actually works and I can use dual gpu ( i have amd and nvidia gpu) There are times I have to put it on performance mode to use nvidia but it actually works, Ive also managed to run minecraft with an average of 120fps and terreria from steam , I also managed to install a vm and got it to work properly for learning pentesting. I also manged to downlaod vpns and tor( its banned where im at rn) using protonvpn web extention. It's been 2 days and nothing is broken.

Linux Mint IRL Trying it out after lurking in this sub for weeks

Hello Linux Mint folks!

It is my first time using linux and every research I did recommended Linux Mint.

I was honestly tired of windows constant updates and bloatware.

I was hesitant to do it on my main PC (9800x3D, 32gb RAM, 5080. 2TB DDR5) just because I am a complete noob and I worked hard to build it last year to save money and I do not want to break anything on this thing.

Then I remembered I have a Macbook Pro 2012 with 1TB storage I bought in FB marketplace during my university days that I haven't used in ages. The OS is still on Mojave and quiet slow now.

I did my research on how to install a new OS (as a complete noob btw) and I did it! I am so proud of
myself, I did some extensions to make the UI feel familiar and honestly was surprised how much it breathe a new life into the Macbook.

I love that Linux Cinnamon was so flexible and easy to use. Its faster too, on a 20 year old hardware!

I also switch from chrome to firefox since i want more privacy and adblock, more seamless than I thought, importing passwords are so seamless.

-KeePassXC is an amazing tool to store passwords!
-LibreOffice is amazing! no need for subscriptions!
-KdenLive is also amazing! I tend to edit my travel videos when I hike/climb mountains and this was a great alternative to Adobe.

Looking forward to discovering more.
Maybe if I get used to Linux Mint enough in the Macbook, I will eventually use it on my main rig.

The only reason that is holding me back is the gaming compatibility. The EasyAntiCheat is on some of the games I want to play in the future.

Otherwise I am really tempted to switch and leave Microsoft Windows for good!

Discussion I made the swap today finally!

I’m just downloading all my games now and tinkering around with menu colors and other stuff lol. If you got any recs for programs I would benefit from please let me know!!

This was way easier to do than I thought it would be! Windows 11 was just so laggy and slow, and would randomly change things on me and a LOT of popups. Immediately this is a lot smoother lol

LMDE - finally I won.

This week is LMDE with 5060 Rtx laptop. Took an hour to install due to Debian does not like new hardware, but succeeded! My Laptop does not like Fedora based distros but works well with Arch and FreeBSD. My favorite is Linux Mint. Used for awhile, but decided to give LMDE a shot. Much harder due to hybrid HP OMEN.

Gaming How to play classic Warcraft 3 without any loss in performance

I’ve been using Linux Mint on my laptop and wanted to play Warcraft 3, so I downloaded Lutris. However, Proton doesn’t work when I use it; I’m forced to use Wine instead. This results in terrible graphics quality, and the game runs poorly—consuming far more resources than other games. Does anyone know how to get Proton working for the classic version of Warcraft 3, so I can avoid using Wine, which performs terribly and is extremely resource-intensive?

Discussion Linux Mint doesn't "wake up" after suspend

Does anyone else have a similar problem? I already checked the logs and it seems to be related to a PCIE Bus error..

when i leave my pc running and come back after it went into suspend - it won't "wake up" anymore. but more likely its something to do with the GPU?? because my pc doesn't seem to be in suspension at all - fans are going and everything. just the monitors go dark and stay dark even after i press all the buttons to try to wake it up. the only thing fixing it is a hard reset via power button...

i don't know what could cause this?? does anyone have any ideas?

my own troubleshooting resulted only in my motherboard being maybe be too old - i have a 5070 ti with 16gb vram, so it's recommended to use PCIE 5.0, but my board only has a PCIE 4.0 not 5. could it be that its an hardware issue and has nothing to do with mint? :D

(yes i did check all the drivers and tried different ones - no change)

Support Request Running slower after installing Mint

I downloaded Mint onto my new gaming computer and I'm having a bunch of performance issues. When i first started with linux I couldn't play anything since the graphics were abysmal and it would barely run. I fixed that when I found out that I hadn't even downloaded the nvidia driver... And while it's obviously a lot better now, I'm still having big issues! Discord crashes almost immidiately whenever i try to stream anything, Overwatch(which was running perfectly when i had windows) is choppy and basically unplayable, and the screen on my laptop will suddenly freeze all the time. The weirdest thing about the screen freezes is that when i had a TV connected via HDMI, it showed that it wasn't the computer that was frozen, cuz it functioned just fine on the TV, it was just the screen on my laptop. I suppose i wonder whether there are other things similar to downloading the driver that i don't know about that would fix these issues. Thanks in advance!

Install Help What do I do? I can't even boot in live version, because of those errors.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Those errors appear on mint, debian and LMDE as well, I haven't tested in others distros. I tried look this shit up, but there's too little info on that. I heard ventoy might cause some errors, but I have tried it medicat, ventoy and by rufus, none of them changed the output. My theory is that mobo (gigabyte b650 gaming x ax v2) might be the problem, or GPU (rtx 4060ti). Help me i dunno what to do.

SOLVED How I Finally got ParrotOS VM working in LinuxMint

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I've been trying to install and run parrot os on a vm inside linuxmint for 4 hours and there's literally 0 videos or walkthroughs on how to do it. And not to mention when I followed Gemeni's instrucitons it did not work at all. Then I decided to go freestyle and it actually worked >-<. * First I installed the AMD64ISO file from ParrotOS page * Second I Installed Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) * Put the ISO file in your dedicated drive|location|folder * Fire up the vm , add QEMU/KVM connection * Go to file or bulb icon and create new virtual machine * Click local instal media iso and then Forward * Choose ISO from the location * Choose 'Generic Linux 2024' as the operating system and click Forward * Create disk image ( i recommend 60 GB ) you can choose your drive | location where you want it by creating a new volume * I chose the firmware as BIOS and clicked intall(didnt screenshot it) * Then in the vm it should look like a normal linux installation , just follow some parrot os install guide on yt and you are good to go!

Support Request Mac mini audio not recognized

Help!

I have a Mac mini 5,2 I want to revitalize and audio will not work. I've tried the HDMI and aux chord but the HDMI doesn't work and the aux chord is not even being registered. It says Intel sound card has no driver. I've tried troubleshooting with chatgpt with no success. Other than the audio it work really well and I'd love to fix it.

Support Request [SOLVED] Linux Mint was using llvmpipe instead of my Intel UHD Graphics 620 — fixed hardware rendering on a Dell Inspiron 5379

Hardware: Dell Inspiron 5379

GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Kaby Lake)

OS: Linux Mint, Ubuntu 24.04-based system

Display session: X11

The problem

I was troubleshooting choppy video playback in my browser on Linux Mint. During the investigation, I discovered that although my laptop had an Intel UHD Graphics 620, OpenGL was using llvmpipe, which renders graphics in software using the CPU instead of the GPU.

My original "glxinfo -B" output showed:

direct rendering: Yes

Vendor: Mesa (0xffffffff)

Device: llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2, 256 bits)

Accelerated: no

OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2, 256 bits)

This explained why graphics rendering could be unnecessarily CPU-intensive.

Step 1 — Check the graphics hardware and driver

I ran:

inxi -Gxx

The output confirmed that the laptop had Intel UHD Graphics 620 and the kernel's "i915" driver was loaded.

However, the OpenGL renderer was "llvmpipe", which indicated that the GPU was not being used for OpenGL rendering.

Step 2 — Check VA-API video acceleration

I ran:

vainfo

This successfully loaded Intel's "iHD_drv_video.so" driver and listed supported video profiles, including H.264, HEVC, and VP9.

This was an important clue: the VA-API video driver was available, but OpenGL rendering was still falling back to software. These are separate parts of the graphics stack.

Step 3 — Investigate the Xorg log

I checked the Xorg log:

grep -Ei 'intel|AIGLX|swrast|DRI' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The relevant errors were:

(II) intel(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: i965

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so failed

(EE) AIGLX error: unable to load driver i965

(II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast

(II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

The legacy Xorg Intel driver was attempting to load "i965_dri.so", which was missing. Xorg consequently fell back to software rendering.

Step 4 — Inspect the Xorg configuration

I checked the configuration files:

ls -la /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

There was no main "/etc/X11/xorg.conf", but there were several files under "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/".

The important discovery was that the Intel configuration selected the legacy driver:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Intel Graphics"

Driver "intel"

Option "TearFree" "true"

Option "TripleBuffer" "true"

EndSection

For this setup, I switched the configuration to the modern Xorg "modesetting" driver.

Step 5 — Switch to the modesetting driver

I edited "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf" so that it contained:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Intel Graphics"

Driver "modesetting"

EndSection

I saved the file and rebooted the laptop.

Important: Changing the Xorg configuration requires restarting the graphical session. Checking "glxinfo" before rebooting still showed "llvmpipe", so I initially thought the change had not worked. After rebooting, the result was different.

Step 6 — Verify the fix

After rebooting, I ran:

glxinfo -B

The output now showed:

direct rendering: Yes

Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

Device: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2) (0x5917)

Version: 25.2.8

Accelerated: yes

OpenGL vendor string: Intel

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)

OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 25.2.8

Success! OpenGL was now using the Intel UHD Graphics 620, and hardware acceleration was enabled.

What I learned

- Having the correct kernel driver loaded does not necessarily mean OpenGL is using the GPU.

- VA-API video decoding and OpenGL rendering are separate components, so one can work while the other has problems.

- Xorg logs can reveal why the system is falling back to software rendering.

- The legacy "intel" Xorg driver can cause issues on some systems when its expected Mesa driver files are missing.

- Switching to "modesetting" and rebooting fixed the OpenGL rendering problem on my system.

What remains to be tested

If you have a similar Intel GPU and Linux Mint setup, check "glxinfo -B" before changing anything. Your configuration and symptoms may be different, so don't blindly copy the Xorg configuration without checking your own logs.

Thanks to everyone sharing Linux troubleshooting advice!

Support Request Love the Mint. But I'm having problems getting auto update to work

I have an old lenovo P330 that I picked up for $25 from a hospital surplus sale (I should have bought 10 more) and I love it. I'm trying to get it to auto install updates but update manager gives me the message "make sure your system snapshots are properly configured before enabling automation". Timeshift is up and running fine. It runs everyday. All the automation window buttons are on. I'm getting several updates everyday on average. But update still shows each update as it comes in and doesn't auto update once a day. Am I doing something wrong?

Support Request Monitor has to go to sleep in order to turn on at 144Hz refresh rate

If I set my display refresh rate to 60Hz, monitor turns on normally, but if I set it at 144Hz i need to wait like 15 seconds for the monitor to go to sleep and only then does it turn on.

I've new to linux in general, that is, I have no idea what I'm doing...
