Understanding C++ Memory Management in Linux Applications
techfortalk.co.ukWhile working with high-level C++ applications, it is easy to lose sight of where the program is getting all its memory chunks from. In a previous post, Understanding C++ Memory Layout for Systems Programming, I discussed the memory map of a typical C++ program. Here, we will put the theory into practice and check where objects are stored within a running process’s virtual address space.
In this post, I will take a closer look at Linux memory management, scrutinize the various allocations that are happening in a C++ program, use Linux memory management tools, and verify whether the objects are located in the expected memory regions.
