Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

→ Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

→ Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering English Offering: English 🇺🇸 (native) | Seeking: Spanish 🇲🇽 & possibly friendship :)

Hello! I’m Rhys, I’m 26. Some of my hobbies include crocheting and sewing, creating art, and reading! I also play some cozy video games and do puzzles. I hate driving and getting vaccines (I am fully vaccinated), although piercings and tattoos don’t scare me at all (I have a few of both, in fact). I work as a nanny and at a library. I have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology; I love studying humans and cultures. I have two cats and live with my spouse in Colorado, United States. I like to say I know enough Spanish to get me by in a pinch. I took it in high school and lost most of my ability after not using it for a few years. I want to become fluent eventually!
DM me if you’re interested in talking via text and eventually phone :)

Offering English Offering Native English (US) | Seeking Mexican or Colombian Spanish

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m a 32M environmental engineer from the U.S. working in floodplain management. I’ve been learning Spanish for about a year and a half, primarily using Comprehensible Input and Anki.

Where I'm at:

I’d place myself around A2 to low B1. I think I can hold a basic conversation, but still freeze up and second guess my ability to actively comprehend. I am not starting from zero, but I want to work on my active listening, spontaneous speaking, and picking up more natural vocabulary and local slang. In addition to continuing to adjust my ear to the rhythm and flow of natural spanish.

Interests & Topics:

  • Sports: Played lacrosse and American football, like following sports in general.
  • Culture & Travel: Big on learning about different cultures, music, and movies/TV shows.
  • Work & Tech: Happy to talk about engineering, nature, or work life.

What I'm looking for:

Looking for a consistent exchange partner to chat via text or voice call. In return, I’m happy to help you refine your English grammar, practice natural conversation, or help with workplace English!

Feel free to send me a DM or leave a comment if you're interested. ¡Saludos!

Hi, there! I’m a 30M native English speaker from the United States (California), and I'm looking for a language exchange partner for Spanish. My current level is B2/C1.

I'm happy to split our language practice evenly between English & (your language).

About me:
I live in Latin America with my wife and our crazy little orange cat. My greatest passions are for music, backpacking/camping, language/cultural exchange, and reading. I find it easiest to connect in conversation with curious, empathetic, and humble people.

Thus far in life, I've been lucky enough to visit 10+ countries 🇦🇷 🇨🇱 🇵🇦 🇨🇴 🇯🇵 🇮🇹 🇭🇺 🇩🇪 🇦🇹 🇮🇪 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇪🇸 🇪🇬

Offering Multiple Languages Offering:English, Spanish, Norwegian, Latin, Ancient Greek, Portuguese, Danish, German, Dutch, Italian and Swedish, Seeking: French

• Upvotes

I suppose the sensible thing would be to begin by explaining why I am here, which is that I would very much like to learn French, preferably from an actual human being rather than an increasingly disappointed language-learning application that has begun to suspect I shall never amount to anything.

In return, I can offer (gestures vaguely and rather theatrically towards the top of the post), all of the above! I make no promises about my ability to explain the subjunctive without becoming insufferable, though I shall do my best.

Beyond the languages, I am rather fond of literature, history, philosophy, poetry, and conversations. I read quite a lot, think probably more than is strictly necessary, and have a particular weakness for obscure facts that are of absolutely no practical use to anyone. I am also quite capable of talking about something I love for considerably longer than the circumstances warrant, so do feel free to tell me when I have become unbearable.

I should probably confess that I am not especially interested in treating this as an exchange of vocabulary lists, obligatory daily exercises, and increasingly desperate attempts to remember the difference between two French prepositions. Those things have their place, certainly, but I would much rather learn a language by actually using it, talking about our days, exchanging recommendations, arguing over books, discussing things we know far too much about, or discovering that we have absolutely nothing in common and getting along splendidly regardless.

I don't particularly mind whether you are a beginner in one of my languages or considerably more advanced than I am in French. We all begin somewhere, and I have never quite understood the embarrassment people feel about making mistakes in a language they are trying to learn. Getting things wrong is, after all, a rather important part of getting things right.

And, honestly, if we happen to become friends along the way, all the better. I think there is something rather lovely about meeting someone you would never otherwise have encountered, learning how they think, discovering the little peculiarities that make them themselves, and gradually finding that a conversation with a stranger has become something you look forward to.

I am perfectly happy talking to someone who has a hundred stories to tell, someone who takes a little while to warm up, or someone who turns out to be an enthusiast for some extraordinarily specific subject I know nothing about. Especially the last sort. I like being introduced to unfamiliar worlds.

So, if you speak French and would like to practise any of the languages I have mentioned, do say hello. Tell me about yourself, tell me what you are reading, tell me something absurdly specific that you happen to know, or simply tell me how your day has been. You needn't compose a particularly impressive introduction; I have just written several paragraphs and am still not entirely convinced I have managed one myself, and if we happen to get along, well, that would be rather nice, wouldn't it? :)

Offering Polish Offering: Polish | Seeking: English (🇨🇦🇺🇸🇦🇺)

Heyy! 22F from Poland looking for ppl aged 22–29 to practice English with and hopefully become friends with!!
I’m into traveling, hiking, photography, cooking, reading, history, learning languages and going down random rabbit holes at 2 am lol. I love learning about different cultures, hearing people’s stories and finding out what life is like in other parts of the world. I’m especially interested in American, Chinese, Japanese and Korean culture!
I’m into rock and classical. I can go from talking about history to the most random topic ever, so there’s never a guarantee where a convo will end up lmao.
I barely get to speak English IRL, so I wanna put all those years of learning to use 😭 I can teach u some Polish too, so we can both struggle with each other’s languages haha.
I’d also love to practice video calls! They still make me nervous for some reason and idk why 💀
I’m looking for genuine friendships, good conversations, sharing music, random facts, cultural differences and just yapping about life. I’m open to talking about pretty much anything, so feel free to bring up whatever you’re interested in!
If we sound like we’d vibe, hmu!! Just tell me a little about yourself, ur fav song or a random fun fact. Pls give me something to work with because idk how to respond to just “hey” 😭

Offering English Offering: English (native) | seeking: polish

I'm Phoenix, I am 24 years old and I am trying to learn polish for my husband. My husband is from Poland and he has tried for so long to teach me. It's native language but either he's a terrible teacher or I'm really bad at picking it up. I can understand polish pretty well I cannot read or write it and I can somewhat speak it. I am definitely A1 level speaker. I would be happy to help others with their English in return. I would prefer to learn how to speak it before learning how to read and write it. I'm available 24/7 right now as long as I'm awake. I am open to texting and voice calls. Some things about me. I am a horror lover. I'm alternative. I love theme parks and animatronics. I'm open to talking about anything and I'm open to learning anything. If this is something you would be interested in, please message me.

Hi! Native English speaker here. If you’re looking to improve your English through conversation, I’d love to help you out. We could talk once a week for 20-30 min. I’m not the best conversationalist but I am trying to improve that about myself so I figure helping others would help me (and you!) and that’s why I’m making this post.

I’m in EST and would prefer to have someone in or near that timezone who can chat in the afternoon or evening EST time. Let me know!

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Kalaallisut/Greenlandic

Hello all! My name is Bec, and I am a graduate student in the US studying the ecology of Arctic mammals. Beginning next spring, I will be traveling to Greenland seasonally to work with other scientists and local hunters to conduct my research. It is my understanding that English may be sufficient in Nuuk but not in more rural areas, so I hope to get at least a conversational grasp on Kalaallisut to be able to get around in the towns where my research will be conducted. I am aware that Kalaallisut is difficult to learn for native-english speakers, so I figured having a buddy to practice with would be the best way forwards to keep on task!

I would also love to learn more about Greenlandic & Kalaallit culture. Given current tensions between my country and Greenland (due to an administration I do not align myself with), I would like to be as respectful as possible during my visits!

As for interests, I love to rock climb, hike, and knit :)

Offering English Offering: English | Seeking: Russian

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a language exchange partner; I understand Russian quite well, I am an intermediate learner, but still struggle sometimes in everyday communication.

I am offering English, but it is not my native language. It should mean something that I am getting a master's degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language so I can definitely help you. My English language skills are at a C2.

I am based in the EU. I would prefer my language exchange partner to be around my age (mid to late 20s).

My interests are language, reading, movies, and music. Reccomend me some Russian artists you love?
