It’s amazing how over 100 years of selective breeding has turned pugs into the mess they are today. It’s really sad. They have so many health problems now that they didn’t have a century ago.

We had to euth our rescued pug vs allow her to go in a really crummy way via resp issues.

We’re now owned by a rescued Yorkie; often bred to be as small as possible. They’re not “pocket pets”; they’re dogs. Get a hamster.

Tbf I had a “toy” yorkie growing up. This thing was scared of a breeze of wind. But when our cats would show her where a mouse was in our basement…. Good lord. This little 7 pound dog would tear mice to pieces and then look at you like she wanted another treat. She may have been intentionally bred to be extra small, but by god did she still have all of her breeds innate traits.

Hunting/pest control dogs are unrepentant killers and it's so funny

My shiba came in from his nighttime yard adventures literally covered in blood more than once

Shibas can be fierce…

Exactly! Yorkers were originally bred to be ruthless “ratters”. Small, only to give them an advantage in factories and homes.

Hate to admit ours yanked his leash out of a hand when he 1st saw a chipmunk (adopted at 10 mos; had been kept in a breeding cage only, but I digress).

Found 3 days later, leash/him tangled in underbrush. How he didn’t become a coyote canapé beats me. Other than him running silent/deep (with an entire neighborhood, incl police, hollering for him. Heck no, you guys are gonna blow my cover…I guess).

Biggest dogs in small bodies I’ve ever met.

Going stealth once again ;)

I’m sorry to hear that 😔
Pugs are nuts but very sweet imo.

I appreciate that ❤️

Will admit, she could be a pita ;) Got invited to a wedding; unwisely, seated near a videographer’s mic. Instead of vows: SNARFLE SNORT SNOOORE (resounding fart) SHLORP…

The Yorkshire Terrierist can breathe, but also never shuts tf up. Including shrieks that leave everyone clinging to the ceiling. Bc he heard a leaf fall.

I found a lost pug one night, walked around the neighborhood to find the owner before going home with em to give the poor thing a break, we didn’t even walk that far really but he was breathing so loud so we stopped and went home for a break but found the owners through neighbors on the neighborhood chat. But even after we stopped walking and rested he was breathing so loud, just huffing and puffing like he was an out of shape, heavy smoker trying to climb up Everest. They need to put a stop to breeding them, and other animals for how they look like midget cats, I feel so bad for em. They get serious health problems caused by the genetic mutation for short legs but people like how they look so they’ll breed more

My 13 year old pug looks pretty damn close to the dog in that picture

•

u/Blackout_Underway 2h ago

Ehh, Idunno, they seemed pretty ugly back then, too.

•

u/Bill_Cosby_ 2h ago

The pug here is not nearly as bug eyed and mush faced as many are now

•

u/AbilityLost3482 1h ago

U r rite. It's so sad they are out of breath so soon after walking

•

u/Weekly-Map-3942 2h ago

To each their own, I guess.

This is exactly what this dude thought would happen to his wholesome photo in 100 years.

•

u/Fapplesauced 2h ago

I think he'd be totally down with this picture.

•

u/Radiant-Concern-3682 1h ago

Now its more interesting.

What does the pug say

•

u/Sophisticated-Tiger 57m ago

That would make a cool poster or shirt or album cover lol

•

u/Leather_Ad_960 49m ago

Things I never expected to see, but I'm forever grateful I did 🤣.

•

u/muniz1995 29m ago

That's something Mark Ryden would draw

•

u/khalamar 3h ago

Must be the first time I read the words "healthy looking pug".

•

u/RotatingSquirrel 3h ago

Don’t worry. You didn’t.

•

u/finchthemediocre 3h ago

Lol I just caught that

•

u/suchasuchasuch 3h ago

You mean “healty”

•

u/khalamar 3h ago

Well... that too.

•

u/bry42424 3h ago

No way that dog is 100

Ugg this hits me in the feelers for my jug that pass 4 years ago this past Monday..... ex's decision, hated him for thr first year, slowly started hopping on on me to sleep during movie time. We were soon inseparable. Ex gone, no discussion who he was staying with.

Oh Rolo, you are missed dearly...

•

u/biz_cazh 2h ago

Healty looking gentleman as well.

•

u/Uthor_ 3h ago

What's a cabinet card?

•

u/MichaelDola 1h ago

A style of studio photography popular in the 1880s to 1900s. They had a uniform size, typically 6.25" by 4.25".

•

u/Electrical-Aspect-13 3h ago

NOTE: CABINET CARD CIRCA 1880.

•

u/Desperate_Object_677 3h ago

that’s healthy for any 100 year old dog! not just a pug.

•

u/DevolvingSpud 3h ago

He died later in a huge battle in the Middle East I believe

•

u/squanch_you 3h ago

Either Reddit has completely warped me, or this guy looks just like Tim Robinson with a ‘stache.

•

u/herrsonic 3h ago

pugs have been altered by artificial genetic
breeding to be small over the past 100 years

•

u/jellifercuz 2h ago

What other kind of breeding could there possibly be?

•

u/AEON_MK2 2h ago edited 2h ago

Eww squish it's face into it's skull until it can't breathe, I find that more desirable 🥴

(This comment is mocking and satirical, because apparently that needs to be said explicitly)

•

u/Bruce-Wayne702 3h ago

Is this Bradley cooper preparing for his next role?

•

u/sxrrycard 3h ago

It’s still insane to me how detailed early cameras were (unless this was upscaled, etc)

•

u/CharlesJGuiteau 1h ago

Power of analog, technically an analog photo can be infinitely detailed, it’s just how well you take the photo

•

u/vivaaprimavera 3h ago

Have you seen the size of the negatives?

•

u/campus159 3h ago

Is that Andrew Huberman?

•

u/CombinationNo4926 3h ago

Wasn’t lenney in rd2

Compare it to a modern day pug. Use your brain for two seconds and it is very interesting.

•

u/Thisshitaintfree 3h ago

Looks fake.

•

u/S0MEBODIES 3h ago

Why

•

u/Thisshitaintfree 1h ago

Dog looks too clean as does the whole photo

•

u/S0MEBODIES 1h ago

What is the dog looking to clean? Aren't they known to make messes.

Jk I know you ment too clean. The guy could have simply washed his dog, especially when he's going to have photo with it. I'm not sure what you mean by the rest of the photo looking too clean it looks like a well-kept black and white photograph.
