that a lot of the material analyzed is made of the same stuff from the earth.
They were formed in the same solar system, I bet Mercury is made of a lot of the same stuff as Earth too, no? Not to disagree with the hypothesis, but I am guessing there must be more evidence?
We put our hands on stuff from space - in the form of meteorites. We also measured stuff on Mars (actually, we also put our human hands on stuff from Mars - some meteorites came originally from Mars - we know that because we compared it to what our probes measured in place up there).
And we found out that the stuff from other places differs slightly - it has measurably and repeatably different ratios od certain isotopes.
Mars rocks have their isotopic fingerprint, meteorites have their fingerprints specific to particular stream, our Earthly rocks have their Earth specific fingerprint. The trouble is Moon rocks have the same fingerprint as Earth ones.

This is actually quite easy to answer, Im surprised no one mentioned this.
When we went to the moon, the samples we brought back revealed that a lot of the material analyzed is made of the same stuff from the earth.
This theory formed as a result of that data.
