That is absolutely too thin for a wall. Some shady construction company skimped.

It takes atleast a couple days or a whole day at the minimum to patch, mud, sand, mud again, texture and then paint the next day

u/mearbearcate Sep 20 '26
Bashing against a brick wall
22
u/bslawjen Sep 20 '26

I did that once as a teenager although it was my heels that made the hole. Dad (rightly) made me help patch the plasterboard.

The good thing about your wall being made of paper is it's pretty easy to fix

That’s how cheap modern American homes are built. No 2x4 studs in the wall and they still want to charge you 750000 for entry level models.

u/Nagisan Sep 21 '26
Jokes aside, I live in in a HCOL area specifically because housing in the area is well above the national average. Our median home costs are around $600k.
We build them this way because it's far cheaper and faster to replace if something happens to it.
If we built them like the UK, housing costs would be significantly higher on materials and specialized labor costs. $750k and up "for entry level" would only apply in very expensive areas like DC, NY, SF, etc. Would probably be comfortably over $1m in those areas if over-built in this way unless you're living in a shoebox.

If the wall was brick it would have anything happen too it. So no need to fix.

Hurricanes and Tornados, which are either much more common in the US or much more dangerous, will absolutely cause damage to brick structures. There is no "no need to fix" when dealing with US weather extremes.
They can work in some areas that don't get either of these issues, but the US also has significant amounts of trees compared to the UK. So building with wood is significantly cheaper, slap on a touch of capitalism always pushing desire for new layouts and other upgrades and you have a market where brick buildings that stand for 100 years are not desirable.

Better than busting your neck
3
u/Old_timey_brain Sep 20 '26
Hah! My dad called me to do this repair for him, but it was his head that hit at that height after he tripped, stumbled, and kaboom.
Fortunately it was between the studs as hitting a stud would have hurt his neck pretty badly.

u/RobertPaulsen1992 Sep 20 '26
Imperial Japanese and contemporary yankees both build their walls from paper, it seems.

This is why I love having brick and mortar walls rather than the rubbish that is plasterboard and studwork.

-3
u/ChimmyChanga024 Sep 21 '26
Probably is, americans are stupid for alot of things, i however am not American. I just made a joke and you come in asking something stupid
0
u/DistortedNoise Sep 21 '26
Well it sounded like you’ve done it from experience. And considering you couldn’t even spell ‘you’re’ correctly, it was a fair assumption that you’ve hit ‘your’ head a few times.
