𝚅𝚎𝚗𝚝 / 𝚁𝚊𝚗𝚝 Bizarre experience at Costco over a meatball sample… why are people like this?
This happened yesterday at my local Costco, and I’m still confused by how aggressively triggered this guy got over a sample.
They were giving out those pineapple teriyaki meatballs. I don’t actually buy them because they're not great for you, but I’ll always grab a sample when they’re out. The employee had just put out a fresh tray and there was zero line—literally just me and one other guy who grabbed one. I went up, took two, scarfed them down, and started walking down the aisle.
As I’m walking, I notice a guy parked with his cart in the middle of the aisle, staring dead ahead. Every few seconds he’d glance sideways at me, then quickly snap his eyes back straight ahead. I figured he was just waiting on someone, so I didn't think much of it.
Right as I walk past him, he shakes his head, scoffs, and says: "One at a time, bro… one at a time."
I was totally thrown off, trying to process if he was actually talking to me. When it clicked, I said, "They’re unlimited… I took two. What’s your issue?"
He instantly starts yapping nonsense and gesturing, saying "Come on, let’s go get some tacos" in a tone that made it pretty clear he wanted to fight. At that point, I just walked away.
He wasn't even waiting in line for a sample, there was no crowd around, and taking two samples is completely normal anyway.
Just an utterly bizarre interaction. Has anyone else ever encountered a self-appointed Costco sample monitor?

Maybe he was an off duty Costco sample maker and he just witnessed his buddy’s sample cart get raided by a Redditor after a fresh new tray appeared

I’d never fight someone over a sample lol, that’s unhinged. But like, who takes 2 samples? Fully intending not to buy them lol. Cheap ass. Go buy a hotdog haha

Yeah, I agree. Trying to fight over samples is unhinged. But taking two samples at once? Yeah, that's breaking the unwritten rules. Just wrong.

I'm sure it is covered somewhere in the $10,000 I spend there a year.

I sometimes take 2 samples because my husband has wandered off and I know he won’t get a sample if I’m not there. What a weird thing to police!
You know what needs policing at Costco? People pushing their cart straight ahead with their head craned over another way. I use a walker rollator because my balance is very bad after a bunch of back surgeries. Many times the only reason I’m not hit is because my head is on a swivel, constantly. Stopping on a dime hurts my back. Or people who jump in front of me, cutting across me probably because I’m too slow. Yes, it might be the one and only time you cut across in front of a rollator this year, but you’re the 4th person to do that to me today. All of it makes me feel invisible, like no one thinks I matter, not in the least.

I just can’t imagine gaf what some other person at Costco thinks. Let him waste his energy on being negative and go enjoy the free samples.

That guy had something else going on in life probably. What a child to fight over something like that lol.

"they were triggered" is almost exclusively what people say these days when they get caught acting like an antisocial asshole

Oh, he probably was disgusted with the riffraff that he constantly sees day and a day out.
And he finally called it out. People be knocking each other down and get their little greedy hands-on free stuff.

Still no justification to harass a random

What the hell if you don’t call them out nothing will ever change
And if you call them out with the bullhorn, maybe several others who are likely to behave that way, will think twice
I’m 100% on board with calling out the riffraff. Calling out the UNcivil behavior. Taking back the neighborhoods. Demonstrating what civil behavior should be.

Some people just want to be the World Police. Let them stew in their own misery, their heads abuzz with whatever fake grievance they've most recently concocted.
Tussling in the mud with poopies leaves you looking and smelling the same as they do. GG on walking away.

Guy’s being dramatic, but those employees who hand out samples usually are treated like trash by members. Members will crowd them while they finish cutting/cooking/pouring the product, most often won’t even make eye contact when they take them, take 5 samples for them and their kids, and so on. Taking two is usually not a big deal, but it can be annoying to the employee. Not to mention the numbers they’re trying to achieve by handing them out. If someone takes two, they have to work even harder to get a chance for someone to try them who is actually going to buy them

I have never once been invited to an altercation with “come on, let’s go get some tacos.” Or perhaps I’m stupid and I assumed that when people invited me to tacos, they actually wanted to eat tacos but instead they wanted to hit me. I don’t think there’s any tone of voice that would make me associate tacos with violence.
What do you want? He’s an asshole. You’re entitled. I hope neither one of you shops at my Costco. I also hope someone invites me to tacos soon and doesn’t hit me.

What a weirdo! Although, did you think of any comebacks later?
