Ready to do this again? Vote for r/horror's SCARIEST Horror Films of All Time!

Hellooooo, r/horror!

It's been a few years since we last did this, so it's time to revisit one of the most subjective questions in horror: What's the scariest horror movie of all time?

We're not talking about the best horror movies or your personal favorites. We're talking about the ones that genuinely scared you. The movies that kept you up at night, made you check the hallway before bed, or stuck with you long after the credits rolled.

Obviously, fear is subjective. What terrifies one person might not faze someone else, but that's what makes this interesting and fun. Let's see which movies r/horror thinks are truly the scariest.

THE RULES

1. NOMINATE: Comment with the movie you think is genuinely scary. Please include the title, director, and release year.

2. CHECK FOR DUPLICATES: If someone has already nominated your movie, upvote their comment instead of posting it again.

3. VOTE: Upvote the movies you genuinely find scary. You can vote for as many as you want. Downvotes won't count against a nomination.

4. ANYTHING GOES: Any country, decade, or subgenre. Classics, international horror, found footage, psychological horror, obscure gems — if it's horror and it scares you, nominate it!

We'll use the results to update the old list and see what still holds up and what new additions make the cut.

Let's hear your picks, and remember: SCARIEST, not best or favorite.

Discussion What are the most laughably bad third acts in horror movies?

I was watching the Perfection yesterday and it started out pretty strong and had my interest uptil half of the way through. However, it devolves into a clusterfuck and hilariously bad third act. Stupid twists and turns and loses all the trust it gathers in first half. The only thing I was thinking is with such a sold premise and first half execution (or even 2/3rd), it could have gone in a thousand ways better than what the movie showed us.

What are some other horror movies which have this pattern?

Recommend Scariest depictions of demons in media?

I mean you have the big one, the exorcist. Pazuzu. Im thinking demons rather than satan himself but he counts i guess lol. Pazuzu is the standard for terifying demonic imagery in film that really feels evil, though.

• Upvotes

If you have an Alamo Drafthouse near you, check to see if they're screening it! Mine is showing on 10/30 and I'm definitely grabbing tickets. I actually haven't seen it yet but it's been on my list thanks to this sub. Super excited to see it on the big screen, and just in time for Halloween!

Any thoughts on Last Voyage of the Demeter? Worth a watch?

Basically, the title. Never heard of this until it popped up on my Facebook feed. Doesn't have a a cast I recognize, except for Liam Cunningham. Was it ever even in the theaters or was it straight to streaming?

Will I regret watching it?

Edit: Wow! wasn't expecting such a reaction. Sounds like I gotta check this out!

Discussion Milly Shapiro, breakout star of Ari Aster's 2018 horror film HEREDITARY, is doing an AMA/Q&A in /r/movies today, for anyone interested. Her new horror film, HALLOWARRIOR, was released last week, her first film since HEREDITARY.

I organized an AMA/Q&A with actress Milly Shapiro. You may know her from her breakout role in Ari Aster's 2018 Hereditary, or from her Tony Award-winning performance as Maltilda on Broadway in 2013 in Matilda the Musical. She stars in Hallowarrior, her first film since Hereditary (!), which is a Halloween-themed horror thriller that premiered at Tribeca a few months ago and was just released last weekend.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking her a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1xbl9fe/hi_reddit_im_milly_shapiro_from_hereditary/

She will be back at around 3 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Hallowarrior info:

Synopsis: Halloween-obsessed Pumpkin thinks she's the last person alive. But when scavengers show up at her doorstep, Pumpkin has no choice but to tap into her deadliest survival instincts.

Thank you :)

Discussion Monster House (2006) should be classified as a bigger kid’s halloween cult classic, along with movies like Corpse Bride and Coraline

I have very fond memories of watching this as a child and it’s probably my most rewatched movie ever.

The animation is decent, the storyline is great and it stars Steve Buscemi - what’s not to like? It’s also undeniably hilarious. The uvula joke and everything that comes out of Chowder is just straight gold. Plus, Mr Nebbercracker might be one of the best unexpected heroes to come out of cinema.

Although I know the overall vibes and storytelling are different, I have a theory that if Tim Burton had directed something similar to this, it would’ve become as popular as The Nightmare Before Christmas or his other work. This might be a stupid take but maybe someone could argue with me on the logistics of this.

Overall, I do think this movie has pretty decent reputation but I feel like it deserves a lot more hype than it gets.

I just remembered The Bye Bye Man and now I'm viscerally angry Spoiler

Not so much at the movie itself, although it is absolutely terrible, but at one specific scene.

You guys know how people say horror movie characters make dumb decisions? Yeah, this is one of the few times where I agree.

In the scene I'm talking about, the psychic goth girl gets a message from spirits going "Don't think it, don't say it" repeatedly and after that happens, the dipfuck white dude still says "The Bye Bye Man" despite seeing the warning paired with this name in the nightstand, as if he was trying to get them killed! (Yes, they had names, but who the hell cares?)

Did this scene piss anybody else off, or is that just me being completely unreasonable?

Discussion Movies where something awful happens that cannot be undone?

I'm looking for tense movies where something awful happened, either by choice or accident, and the main characters refusing to believe, or slowly have to deal with the fact and accept that it happened.

The problem with a lot of these, is that the fact that something happened, is often a twist that doesn't get revealed to end. Therefor I put most of them in spoiler tag.

Movies like:

  • Coffee table - 2022
  • 11:14 - 2003
  • Hallow Road - 2025
  • The Deeper You Dig (2019)
  • When Angels Sleep - 2018
  • Incident in a ghostland - 2018 (I am not 100% sure about this one, it's been a while)
  • You'll never find me - 2023
  • Bajo la Rosa - 2017
  • The night house - 2020
  • I'm thinking of ending things - 2020 (this isn't really tense, but still)
  • Los habitantes - 2023
  • Dead end - 2003
  • Calibre - 2018
  • Triangle (kindof)
  • Goodnight Mommy - 2014
  • Vanilla sky / Abre Los Ojos
  • Next Door - 2015 (kinda)

Discussion Candyman (1992) and Philip Glass’ Score

I play in an online trivia league and there was a recent question about Glass’ score of a the Candyman. From discussions of the quiz, I learned the Glass was very disappointed in the film because he was sold on it being more cerebral, but he viewed the final product as a more typical slasher. I have always viewed Candyman differently than other slashers of the time because of its setting, atmosphere, and exploration of culture and folklore. So, this take by Glass at the time confuses me. His ambivalence to the film is one of the reasons the score wasn’t released as an album until much later. Wanted to hear other views on this.

The "I Know What You Did Last Summer" reboot didn't work because of how weak the motivation was Spoiler

It didn't take a Rocket Scientist to see that what happened was a accident. They didn't even run over someone. The car came after them and they moved away and the car drove off a cliff. How was that their fault?

Then, when we find out who the killer was, it got even dumber and even the killer didn't seem to buy into the reason.

not sure how to describe them. cast is typically young adults, set in modern times, doesn't take itself TOO seriously but is just a fun ride. i feel like there are a small handful of such movies that i've seen but those three jump out at me.

"Haunted world" style of movies?

I'm looking for movies that make it feel like the supernatural is a real part of the world rather than an isolated incident. A lot of movies feel like the supernatural elements are limited to a single house, town, or city but I'm looking for something wider in scope where haunted objects or locations are just something you could stumble across.

Kairo is a good example

Oddity feels like that too, with the haunted knick-knacks that hint at a larger amount of supernatural objects with stories behind them
