If you are submitting a request for help or advice please read this first.

If you are posting a request for help or advice make sure you provide enough details so others can help you. Things like model numbers, pictures if you can provide them, relevant details about what you're trying to protect, etc.

For example, if you're asking for help with a pre-installed alarm system make sure you include the Make and Model in your post. If you don't have that information provide pictures of the keypad / control panel.

That said, do not post personally identifiable information. Do not make yourself a target to doxxing. Don't post pictures or information that contain names, address, or PINs. Keep yourself, your family, and your property safe.

Sub rules have been updated

As the sub continues to grow, it felt like a good time to put our community rules down in writing. This gives everyone an opportunity to see what's expected of contributors, and hopefully stave off any misunderstandings in the process. For the most part, they're pretty straightforward:

  1. No personal attacks. This seems obvious, but calling a user names is going to get your post removed. Remember that we have a lot of newbies coming here for help with improving their home security; let's welcome them and share some knowledge.
  2. Contribute to the discussion. Make sure your post is meaningful. It must somehow answer OP's question, be relevant to the discussion at hand, or at least be about home security in general. Low-effort posts like "Ring sucks", "Wyze rules", or "12 gauge" are a violation of this rule. We're not going to zap every post that veers a little off topic but if you find yourself debating Android vs iOS, it's probably time to take the thread to another sub. Because everyone knows Blackberry OS is the best.
  3. No personal identification. We don't have the luxury of knowing all sides of the story, so refrain from posting information that can be used to track someone down. This includes posting things like "I don't want to name any names but the CEO of SomeFakeCompanyName LLC tried to break into my home".
  4. Disclose your business relationships. If you mention a company and you have any relationship other than being a customer, you must disclose that in your post. This includes but is not limited to being an owner, employee, contractor, supplier, or affiliate of the company, or being in any way related to such.
  5. Don't spam. This includes but is not limited to posting affiliate links, self-promotion, attempting to solicit customers, offering to give quotes, and soliciting private messages. We don't give "third final warnings" here.
  6. Support your claims. If you accuse Company X of secretly monitoring your cameras, or you think Company Y is sending all your data to a foreign country's intelligence service, that's fine -- but you must include links to reputable sources that support your claim. Reddit comments and other social media posts are generally not "reputable sources".

This sub tends to be pretty well self-regulated, so these shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. But if you have any questions, feel free to send us a DM! And as much as we'd like to be everywhere at once, we can't. So if you see a post or comment that violates one of these rules, please report it so we can check it out.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2022: Due to an unending barrage of crypto spam that the Reddit admins have been unwilling to address, we have implemented a karma floor for posting here. To post or comment, you must have at least 50 karma.

Hidden camera detector for woman living alone in an apartment- good idea or paranoia?

I’m moving into an apartment and will be living alone for the first time ever at 39… I have anxiety and being alone has always made me nervous, not because of anything that’s actually happened to me, because of the what if’s (thanks anxiety…)

I’ve seen videos of hidden camera detectors, like the Prepared Hero Privacy Pen and I’m just to decide if it’s a good idea to get something like that or if I’m just being paranoid and this is my anxiety taking over.

But also, are there any tips you have to feeling comfortable/safe while living alone? I’m also on the first floor and like sleeping with my windows open (weather permitting) but that idea freaks me out being on the first floor. I do have a dog who has a big intimidating bark when strangers come around, but she’s also getting older and sleeps a little heavier than she used to.

Retrofit alarm system to house renovation?

Hello, we are renovating a large (5000sf) old house. There is an existing and operational alarm system that is from the 1990’s. Our insurance requires central monitoring but doesn’t care what kind of alarm we put in. The house renovation is down to the studs so all the walls will be open soon. I got a quote from the local alarm installer to put in a new system (new panel, multiple keypads, sensors, motion, etc.) for $32k (wft!?). And an estimate from ADP for using existing system for $1500. I’m thinking i should just rip it all out and put in a wireless Simpisafe or similar system. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Looking for a floodlight for security purposes

So my wonderful neighbor has now started to stand out in front of the house in his driveway with his drug dealer friend. I’ve asked them nicely to go elsewhere at night and it has not worked. I was thinking of replacing the light over my garage with something significantly brighter. I figured that if I completely illuminate the area, it would discourage them from hanging out. It has to be a motion detector light with a dust to Dawn feature. I’d also like it to be one where it’s low power until motion is detected, and it kicks on high. I’d even be open to one that has an app where I could turn it on full power when they’re just hanging out there. Curious to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

Ring Gen 1 to Gen 2 Wedge Mount

I recently bought a Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) to replace my Gen 1 doorbell, which is mounted on the wall using an angled wedge. The Gen 2 doorbell is slimmer, so it leaves some of the old mounting holes exposed. Is there a wedge or adapter kit that will cover the exposed area and fit the Gen 2 doorbell? Thanks in advance!

Good security sytems?

Me and my girlfriend live in a single wide trailer in a mobile home community. Over the last few days people have tried breaking in twice. Once by trying to open the front door (which luckily we keep locked) and second by trying to get a window AC unit out. We need a good monitored security system because sometimes neither of us are here. I just want something that monitors doors opening, windows opening, and windows breaking. A camera would be a plus. It needs to be reliable and not cost an absurd amount. Please give any suggestions because this is kind of urgent and we're both pretty scared.

minimize entry with open access window

so I moved to a new apartment. it has a wide window around 9ft wide x 2ft high. it has 3 windows that slide and I can lock the middle one with the left right or both (which means all 3 are closed).

but Im using a standing fan on a stool blowing air out to minimize any possible mold which ive had in another apt and ruined many items so this is a preventitive must.

I keep the window open around 20" for the fan to blow out but theres possible for entry. I wont always remember to close the window when I leave home.

2 windows are locked from moving. and im limiting how much the 3rd can be opened but 20 inches is enough to get access in anyway.

I wont remember to close the window always. someone recommended some smart system with a phone and proximity but thats more then I know how to do.

can someone think of an inexpensive way to minimize entry on this window? I was thinking of an automated piston to close.

I was thinking to just keep the window at the 20" mark. lock it with a stick so it can be opened more. then grab a 1" steel bar and mount it to the windows vertically to half that to 10" so more difficult to enter?

I do have curtains on the windows as well. suggestions ideas would be appreciated

Is a video doorbell enough to keep an eye on the front entrance?

Had a package sitting outside for hours the other day while someone was literally home lol. Nothin happened to it but it made me realize how little we actually notice whats going on around our front door. Started looking into security cameras and my neighbor suggested checking out the wyze doorbell.

Seems like a decent option for keeping an eye on the entrance without going all out on a security system. Anyone here using a doorbell cam for home security??

How do I backup doorbell camera footage without using company clouds?

I have a Reolink PoE doorbell camera. If someone disables it or removes it during a home invasion, I have no footage I can get from it.

I know Reolink has a cloud subscription but I dont want to pay a subscription nor want a company like Reolink, Ring, etc. to store my files.

What are my options?

Do all security cameras use internet?

I was thinking of installing a security camera in my house to improve my home security. I seen some products that offer wifi connectivity. And other more advanced ones that connect via Ethernet cable. I know that it receives power over the Ethernet cable, but does it also use the internet as well?

I am just worried connecting over the internet might slow down my internet speed if I constantly live stream the footage.

POE external cameras that won't crap out after a couple of years?

The reviews on Youtube and elsewhere are great for finding out about features and performance, but not for durability. I bought three reolink POE cameras three years ago, and two of them no longer work.

I would imagine that by now, almost all POE cameras are good enough for me in terms of features and picture quality. But can anyone recommend an affordable brand that will last more than three years?

ETA: Thanks to everyone who replied. Some people mentioned that things like moving parts or rain exposure can contribute to unreliability, but my cameras were stationary and completely out of the rain, under porch/patio roofs that extended at least six feet out. Several people recommended Amcrest, so I will look into those. And really, it's not like I threw my money away on Reolink, because they ended up costing less than $20/month, which isn't terrible. Nevertheless, something with no moving parts should last longer, IMO. My desktop PCs, which are much more complex, have run for a decade before I retired them for obsolescence, but still worked.

Garage security

I have a detached garage that I store some equipment and my boat in, as well as my kids dirtbike. Dirtbike theft is pretty common around me so I’d like to install some sort of security system. The garage is ~350’ away from the house, and with clear line of sight. It does have its own service so there is power in the building, but it does not have internet, and being a metal building, there’s no service inside if the doors are shut.
Ideally, I’d like to install cameras on the outside that alert me if someone is there, as well as a door alarm with a keypad of some sort. When I was a mechanic the shop I worked at we had 30 seconds to enter the code once the door was opened before an audible alarm went off. I think I’d like something like that. I do have Lorex cameras on my house, and although I do like the cameras, I had to shut off the motion notifications because they would go off constantly for every bug that flew by them, especially at night. So they’re kind of useless as far as letting me know in the moment, but the dvr is nice. I looked at the ubiquiti nanobeam to get internet to the garage, but I’m at a loss for what to look at after that.
Also, ideally I’d like to do this without a subscription, although it seems like that may be pushing it.

Any suggestions?

My porch camera cuts off people at the door. Would a video lock help?

My porch camera covers the walkway, but part of a visitor disappears from the frame when they stand right at the door. My deadbolt was already due for replacement, so I'm comparing lock and camera options together.

I've been looking into video locks, and the Lockin Veno Plus is one model I'm comparing. It has a 180° view, but I haven't used one and can't tell how well the lock-mounted camera covers the doorway.

If you've used a video lock, does its camera show someone standing at the door clearly enough that you rely less on a separate porch camera?

Dead NR916-N NVR. Can a new NVR adopt locked cameras?

I moved into a new house. The previous renter left a Lorex security system.
The system has 10 wired PoE cameras.
The cameras include Lorex LNB8973-C bullet cameras and Lorex 4K dome cameras.
The NVR is a Lorex NR916-N.
The NVR is dead.
The power light flickers but never starts up and the screen isnt the issue because i have tested it
The system does not output a video signal.
A hard power cycle did not fix the problem.
The NVR has an internal power supply.
I cannot easily replace the power supply.
I plan to buy a new Lorex Connect XC 4K 16-channel NVR.
I do not know the camera passwords from the previous renter.
I cannot use the dead NVR to reset the passwords.
If I connect the 10 cameras to the new Connect XC NVR, what happens?
Can the new NVR adopt the cameras and let me set a new password?
Or must I climb a ladder to press the physical reset button on each camera?
Please tell me if the new NVR bypasses the old passwords.
Sorry desperate times but customer service is really bad
