First, let me start by saying that I am fairly new to firearms, but have done some research and have some very kind friends that have let me shoot neat things, like an AUG, an AR 10, and most recently a MAK-90.
I am absolutely in love with that MAK–90. My favorite thing about it is the thumbhole grip and the fact that it’s a semi auto.
Now, I don’t think I want to buy a vintage or older MAK–90 for a variety of reasons, but I really would like to find something similar. Something modern.
I’ve made a list of what I like about it, and I’m curious if anyone knows of firearms that would match that or at least come close.
1) I really like that it’s semi-automatic with a thumbhole stock and looks more like a rifle than a handgrip style firearm. I really enjoy shooting my bolt action 308 and my shotgun, which both have a very comfortable natural curve rather than the hand grip, which I don’t find comfortable.
2) I would like it to shoot 5.56 or some other caliber that you could find at an average sporting goods store. Something that isn’t too unique or too boutique.
3) I’d like it to be an actual rifle, and hopefully hit 500 yards, even 300 yards, if I get good and build it properly.
4) I would like it to be minimally proprietary, or at least easy to fix with reasonable parts. I’d love it if I could find an AR 15 style that accepts AR mags, but I looked at the foxtrot Mike and so much of it is proprietary that I’m reluctant to buy something like that. I don’t own a lot of firearms and don’t want to have a pile of them. I’d like to have a refined handful that I enjoy.
Does anyone know a firearm that fits that? Really, I just want a good semi-auto with a rifle style stock that isn’t solely proprietary so that if the business goes under, you simply can’t find parts for it.
I hope this is the right place to post this, and I certainly apologize if it isn’t, but I appreciate everyone’s help.
