Cost of living
Is 13-15,000 RMB a comfortable wage for a tier 2 city near Shenzhen or Guangzhou?
And two individuals making the same? So 26-30,000 RMB monthly income before taxes

I’ll be visiting from California and wondering where would be good CrossFit gyms to drop in. I’ll be staying near Yuexiu park.

As a follow up to my post early this year looking for a sourcing agent, we just finished 10 days in Foshan, with our sourcing agent, and so far incredibly good experience: so much high quality furniture, including the style we’re looking for (modern, somewhat minimalist, curved) - and after negotiation we’ve successfully sourced around 60 items total (in quantities varying from 1-12 each). Many standard items (sofas, chairs, tables, outdoor furniture,..) where just fabric/colour/etc were changed, and several fully custom items. Overall definitely very good value to quality ratio, if you shop around enough and negotiate carefully.
Our agent ticked lots of good boxes (prioritising where we go, listening carefully, very active and intelligent in customisation discussions, and efficient+friendly). Also finding a number of good factories to visit direct, away from the showrooms.
The trip was fun, exhausting (8+ hours every day, plus 2 hours most evenings to decide, plan, prioritise for the coming days). The scale of the place is astonishing!
Some observations/thoughts for those thinking of this:
- you can customise colour, fabric, etc typically with dozens to thousands of options. Almost everything can be changed in this way usually at zero cost. (Leather costs more than fabric, but otherwise prices don’t really shift). For our situation (a particularly colourful house) this gave us 100x more choice than back home.
- many places are happy to customise the size, again often at basically no extra cost (eg twice as wide = twice the cost).
- there’s extremely high quality stuff (beautifully, carefully finished in the details) and lower quality stuff all available. Decide what you want.
- pick a hotel near (eg 15-20minutes) your primary destinations. Avoids wasting tonnes of time in traffic.
- bring a measuring tape - while everyone has one it is often useful to measure something quickly yourself
- prices are mostly very negotiable, but every now and again we hit a wall. Decide on your priorities as to where you want to save vs are ok to spend
- our sourcing agent was super detail-oriented making sure that everything was discussed and documented before an order or provisional order was agreed. In this and many other ways she was essential in making the sourcing trip a success.
So if you’re on the fence about sourcing from here, I’d strongly recommend it from experience so far…
Happy to answer any questions. I’m now travelling for tourism in China for a bit, so won’t necessarily answer immediately but I will make sure to answer all questions I feel I usefully can…
And if anyone wants an intro to our sourcing agent, I’m happy to share details or answer questions about her.

Hi all, visiting Guangzhou for a few days. Is there a boxing gym in the area? Competitive or casual is all
good for me. English spoken preferred. I know it’s a long shot but let’s see.

Hey everyone, I'm currently employed in Guangzhou as a foreign language teacher (not english). I'm not here to vent or complain, I just want more testimonies to know if I'm being paranoid, or if I might be right.
So here's the thing: I have a beginner level in chinese, I'm better at reading and writing than speaking and understanding, but I'm slowly improving, which I'm happy about because it's one of the reasons I came to China in the first place.
At the school I work at, me and another teacher (from another country) are the only foreigners. And I feel like people around me are very frequently talking about me indirectly. I hear my country or "_国人", or my language very often in the conversations, and as people usually speak very loud here, they tend to lower their voice at the moment I hear these words.
So here is my question: is it a common experience, as a foreigner, to get a lot of talks behind your back? I have no idea if they're saying good or bad things so it's not bothering me so much, I'm just (like everyone would) a bit uncomfortable not being able to mind my business and go unnoticed, but I know it's part of the package and I won't change that. I would just like to know if other people have common experiences, or if I'm paranoid because I can't understand fully what they're saying and I'm filling the gaps wrongly.
Kiss kiss and hope you're enjoying your time in Guangzhou!

Hi all, I'm looking into non-degree Chinese programs in Guangzhou and was referred to an agent who recommended GPNU.
However, I read a few online comments saying the program is really bad. What makes the university worse than others in Guangzhou?
Thanks

Heyy,
I will have almost 18h layover in Guangzhou before I go overseas. I am hoping to do some clothing shopping, specifically for outdoors (jackets, bags, hiking as well as just general clothing shopping). Is there anywhere closer to the airport, or easy to get to that has these sort.of things.
I am from Brisbane AUS, here we have an outlet called DFO, is there anything similar in Guangzhou (discounted/cheaper, high quality clothing)?
I will be back to Guangzhou after my India trip, so sightseeing isnt important, I just really urgently need to buy a jacket, preferably an aesthetic one. 😅

I am here on company business for a couple of weeks. But my hobby is building e-bikes back home. Is there a shop or an area here that could that I could buy e-bike parts from.

It might sounds like a stupid questions but I bought 6 packs of cigarettes for a friend of mine (Chinese) in China while I was back in my country during the national holidays.
When I got back to China, I tried to shipe the cigarettes through but Cainiao and Shunfeng but both said it was not possible and didn't add anything alse on the reason. My friend asked me to hide the cigarettes in a package among some snacks and other food and tell the delivery that inside there is only food, but honestly I don't really feel like to lie on the content of the package.
What I don't understand is: is it just a policy of the couriers that they don't allow to send oversease cigarettes, or is it a national law? Or maybe is there some limit that can't be exceeded (like 6 packs is too much but maybe 2 is acceptable)?
For reference, I don't know if it is useful, but I live in Guangdong and the person receiveing the package would be in Zhejiang.

How can a U.S. citizen obtain Chinese permanent residency (Green Card)?
Hi everyone! My family and I are considering moving to Guangzhou, China, in the future. My husband is Chinese but US citizen and interested in working as a teacher or teaching assistant at an international school.
I’ve heard that obtaining a Chinese Permanent Card is quite difficult and that only certain employers, professions, or qualified individuals may be eligible.
I’d love to learn more about the requirements and the possible pathways to Chinese permanent residency through employment.
Has anyone here gone through this process or have experience working at an international school in China? I’d really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or reliable resources to help us understand where to start and how to plan for our family’s future in China.
Thank you so much for your help! 🙏

Hi everyone!
I am visiting Guangzhou for the upcoming 2.5 weeks. I am looking for a place where they specialise and can help us design and print a wedding album. We got married a few years ago and had wonderful photos taken, but we never got around printing an actual album.
Anyone can help us find a place where they provide these services?
We are not looking for creating new photo's! Just printing a nice luxurious looking wedding album with the photos we already have (on my usb stick).
Thank you in advance!

Hi!
Looking to walk in to a spot on a Tuesday, been researching some dim sum spots on this sub and on xiaohongshu (before people tell me to search in the history) and having some choice paralysis haha. Been seeing:
Of course, when looking online, some will say "restaurant A sucks! restaurant B is much better" while others will say "restaurant B sucks! restaurant C is better" etc etc haha
Really just looking for a great spot without a super long wait (hopefully <1.5hr on a Tuesday but maybe that's a pipe dream).
As a side note, if anyone has char siu / roast goose recs, that would be much appreciated! Yongxing looks good but the queue seems deadly.
Thank you, I can't wait to visit!

Hey everyone! I’m Richard, a Chinese sourcing agent currently attending the Canton Fair. I’ve helped many overseas clients source products, visit factories, and negotiate with suppliers here in China.
I’d love to meet more international buyers visiting Guangzhou, so I’m organizing a small, casual dim sum meetup tomorrow evening(Oct21).
We’ll meet near the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (Chenjiaci / 陈家祠) in Guangzhou’s historic Liwan district. Come along for some Cantonese food, swap stories from the fair, and get to know each other beyond the exhibition halls.
The group will be limited to 6 people, including myself, so everyone has a chance to chat. Whether this is your first trip to China or you’re a regular visitor, you’re welcome to join!
The exact restaurant and time are still being finalized. If you’re interested, please DM me soon so I can confirm numbers and arrange a table.
Hope to meet some of you over dim sum!

Does anyone know how much they charge for premium lounge at terminal 2? I can't find the price anywhere online except for a 2 hour pass which seems quite pricey.

Hi!
My boyfriend and I are currently in Guangzhou for the first time (from aus) . Looking to see if any locals would be keen to catch up for dinner maybe?
We normally travel for the food, and meeting new people. Previously done a lot of home stays but this time we are mainly staying in hotels. Finding it hard to navigate what food are a "must try" and was hoping to find someone local to possibly hang out with! Would be good if you know a bit of english but we can sort the rest with translating app! Cheers.
