The old man climbed the mountain with me at sunrise today. We are celebrating Panzers 8th birthday and the season wrap up. This is his 7th? Season. We have a active fire so I didn’t have time to do a lot of photos but with the 80% containment as of today I think tomorrow will be great for a photo shoot and a birthday steak

New Owner Regression

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hello!

I brought home my absolute dream dog back in march. He was a dream, toilet training SO EASY. Crate training (almost) perfect. Learnt all the commands, listened, came back when called, calm in the house. I thought I had the jackpot puppy.

Now he hit 8.5 months about two weeks or so ago and omg WHO IS THIS DOG IN MY LIFE? He’s being such a menace all day. Biting my feet, barking in my face for attention while I’m working, not settling after a walk and on walks!! He is going for feet, flipping about on the floor, not listening, his recall has all but vanished.

I know that regression is a thing and that we have to remain consistent, revisit basics, go back to enforced naps, reward good behaviour and ignore the bad etc. but I’m begging for reassurance that it happens commonly and it will get better? A 58kg monster jumping and biting at barking at me while I’m in meetings is not a great look 🤣🤣 (and yes he does get kongs, etc for when I can’t give him my attention)

Picture of him sleeping mainly to remind myself what an angel he is usually !

Dane Discussions Advice for a first time dane owner

I'm going to potentially be fostering to own a 4 year old dane. His owner has cancer and needs to rehome him. I'm well versed in dog ownership and training. I've had pits and other high energy dogs. As long as his owner confirms he is dog and cat friendly, he'll likely be coming to me. What is some advice you'd give a first time dane owner? Especially considering he's an adult (intact for now) dane.

Q and Maybe Some A’s Training/bark collars?

Our youngest girl is a barker ... she barks at the wind! We have bark collars for both our Danes, and the older girl, who's a genius, knows what that's about -- she does NOT bark when the collar is on. The collar can be hanging off her neck, no bark. However, the younger girl ... not so much.

Has anyone found a training collar that uses sound/vibration for bark and behavior modification, without those long metal probes that dig into the dog's neck? I hate those things ...

Q and Maybe Some A’s dane owners, how did you land on an annual limit when every bill is giant breed sized

our boy is 14 months, still growing, and everything at the vet is priced for his size. sedation, imaging, even the table they need. the quotes ive pulled mostly differ on the annual limit, 5k vs 10k vs unlimited and the jump in premium between them is bigger than i expected for a dane.

im comparing fetch, nationwide, healthy paws and prudent pet. the bloat and orthopedic numbers people post here are what im sizing against. how did you decide where to set the limit?

Q and Maybe Some A’s Adopting a 7 yr old GD and need some recommendations about diet

Hello r/greatdanes

We are adopting an absolute sweetheart 7 year old Great Dane because his current owner has trouble with a long work schedule and no one to let him out. We have a home that is almost never empty and plenty of room for him so we are excited to give this senior boy a loving retirement home with lots of attention.

We met him and took him for a walk and instantly fell in love with him. We noticed on his walk his poops were a little yellowish and soft, and we’ve been told he has a sensitive stomach. He has a vet appointment this week for a checkup and shots before we pick him up next week. He’s currently eating Wholesome Salmon sensitive stomach food.

Obviously I don’t want to switch his food right away, but I do want to work on firming up his stools and make sure there aren’t any underlying malabsorption or digestive issues. Do you all think a dog fiber/digestive supplement will help? Is that a good place to start?

Experienced pet owners but not with Great Danes specifically. He is obviously a big responsibility and we want to make sure we give him the best care possible for all the time we have with him. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Pulled a full can of Coke out of his mouth last week. Yesterday he found some Little Debbie’s at the very back of the counter and he ate them all, including the wrappers 😅

New Owner 12 week old puppy - excessive drinking

We are first time Dane owners, and recently acquired a 12 week old female. I’ve had some thirsty dogs over the years but this girl drinks like she’s never had a drop of water in her life (and pees just as much).

Is this normal for a pup? Sometimes I can’t tell if she’s just doing it out of boredom or what. We also have a lab and leave the water bowl filled for free drinking but starting to wonder if we should limit her access just because of how much she’s drinking per day.

She does have her first well visit on Tuesday and I plan to bring it up, but I’m just curious if this is common with them at this age.

Was looking for some canned pumpkin today, to make old man Mr Dutch's meals a bit more interesting, along with broccoli and beef broth without onions, garlic or salt.

Could only find some real pumpkin, which young Thorkell promptly stole as soon as I walked in the door. Its apparently the perfect size and weight to roll down the deck stairs and carry around for emotional support.

Hopefully he loses interest soon and I can cook it to entice Mr Dutch to eat (he skipped dinner yesterday and most of his brekkie this morning). He is on a cocktail of paracetamol, carprofen and gabapentin as of this week.
