selfpromo (games) Free Demo: Top-Down Destruction Roguelite made in Godot

You're an armored bulldozer against a whole town who is out to get you, from the local police to the National Guard. Lots of destruction and explosions.

It would mean the world to me if you tried it. Thanks!

This is GTA 1, I love this game and sometimes had plans to make it. Good work

I love the chaos of GTA 1. I haven't played Maniac yet but that looks really fun as well.

do you get extra points for destroying government property?

Yep! They drop a lot more ammo too.

Yes, very original pick 3 gameplay with Claude genned UI, they've never done this before!

Thank you! Do you think it was intentional? Or do and bulldozer just go together well lol

A small nitpick of mine, I dont like how thick the smoke is over the player, I think it obscures their body roo much. Think you'll lessen it, or maybe add a slider? Other than that, it looks fantastic!

The exhaust is pretty thick and the dozer doesn't glow yellow like when it's under explosion smoke so yea, visibility under its own smoke is kinda iffy. I'll toy around with its density. Thanks!

Looks cool,

What upgrades did you consider after run, maybe collect damage to town in upgrades and some additional random grudge missions

And show score with $ sign

2

u/Severe-Bluejay5509 Godot Regular 13h ago

Definitely. More variety in grudge missions on the way in 1.0.

u/Severe-Bluejay5509 Godot Regular 12h ago

How about a toggle that turns them into giant spiders?

2

u/swissm4n Godot Regular 11h ago

works too!

3

u/Severe-Bluejay5509 Godot Regular 11h ago

Ok cool, I'm adding it into the main branch today.

I will def get your game, I love the style + the (sad) story that inspired it

Looks good. I have a similar game (mine's isometric though), hopefully releasing before 2027. I'll definitely check out your demo.

Nice. I kinda wanted it to look like a satellite/drone view without explicitly being one. Just photorealistic enough that you could see it in the corner of your eye and it could believably be an aerial shot.

looks 10/10 buy too much camera rotation (that may only be from the trailer) and 1:06 running over dogs? crushing them? are you 100% that is a good idea?

5

u/IlonPilaaja666 12h ago

Kills hundreds of humans but cant kill a dog?

1

u/Dizzy_Hovercraft_741 1h ago

Kill a human in a viedogame nobody even cares (maybe if they have a story why he deserves it or not...) kill a dog... that may not be the best idea... as the comment below said... "change dogs to drones" is a 10/10 solution to a problem there might not even be real... I just asked him if he thought it was a good idea, did he add them for something about the lore or it is somehting he came up with just for adding content for the game... just wondering if there was a reason...

3

u/Severe-Bluejay5509 Godot Regular 12h ago

If the camera rotation for you is too strong, that's ok! There are sliders to adjust it.

1

u/Dizzy_Hovercraft_741 1h ago

oh excelent! nice job! forget what I said about the camera

1

u/cerebralonslaught 11h ago

In an effort to not remove content, a setting like "change dogs to drones" would be a neat solution here.

u/root88 13h ago

Well, he just murdered a million people and the dogs were attacking him, he didn't chase them down, but yeah, I feel you for sure. Some overly sensitive group is going to go on a mission to get the game cancelled. That could work out for publicity, though. Op needs to protest his own game, like Kevin Smith and Dogma.

1

u/Dizzy_Hovercraft_741 1h ago

oh no idgaf I just believe it isnt the most wise change but he can keep it... probably will buy the game when it is out....

1

u/root88 48m ago

Yeah, I was agreeing with you.

I have no idea why people are downvoting me. Stuff like that gets video games banned. There are entire websites to tell people if a simulated animal harm is even in a movie so they can avoid it.

I mean... it looks fun and all but... I assume you are aware this is very close to a real life tragedy (iirc the guy even used the same name lol)?

It was pretty effed up too... once you hear the whole story too, you kind of feel bad for the guy.

Edit: wow this blew up. I wasn't talking bad about the game or saying it shouldn't be made guys. I just saw the name and remember watching a short documentary on the guy in question.

For anyone curious, here's the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Heemeyer

The moment I saw this post, I thought that it was inspired by that event. I think it should at least be mentioned in the credits or something like that.

GTA is close to every real life carjacking and criminal enterprise you can get, yet people love it and it's currently the fifth biggest-selling video game franchise ever.

Following this sentiment, every game about war, crime or murder … what, shouldn‘t be made? Destruction is part of our nature. If we keep it inside games and virtual worlds, we are doing the world a favor, I‘d argue.

7

u/Bwob Godot Regular 12h ago

That's not what they said at all. No one said not to make games about war, crime, or murder or whatever.

They just pointed out that maybe basing it on a real life tragedy could be kind of poor taste? The real life killdozer guy was a troubled man who felt like he'd been wronged enough, that he convinced himself that God wanted him to build an armed bulldozer, and then smashed up some buildings, before finally killing himself.

A game about smashing buildings with a bulldozer is fine. A game about a specific, (and kind of sad) suicide, makes people feel kind of icky.

Following this sentiment, every game about war, crime or murder … what, shouldn‘t be made?

After the (stupid) 2000s moral panic about violent video games, the gaming community has developed kind of a knee-jerk response to anyone questioning if some types of games should really be made, IMO taking it too far in the other direction. It's fine to make art (including games) featuring violent topics, but there is still the question of good taste. Marvin Heemeyer's "Killdozer" rampage happened only 22 years ago. People that were affected by it are still alive, and he's idolized as some kind of folk anti-government-hero in libertarian right circles. I'm sure a game could treat the topic in a tasteful way, but when framing their game as "armored bulldozer against a whole town who is out to get you", I think OP has to accept that some people will conclude that they have some sympathy for the guy's actions. To illustrate what I mean by good taste, consider if you would feel comfortable attaching your name to a game where the goal is to recreate any of these events (framed as "you against those who are out to get you"):

  • The Columbine shooting
  • 9/11
  • The Sandy Hook shooting
  • The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine

If not, why? Note: Marvin Heemeyer didn't kill anyone (by sheer dumb luck), but that's clearly not the case in OPs game.

5

u/BantedHam 12h ago

A: Heemeyer didn't kill anyone (by honest intent not sheer dumb luck)

B: he only targeted empty buildings belonging to people that completely fucked him over, which is based as fuck

C: Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things

D: Bonus fact, I grew up a hop skip and a jump away from Grandy, and as a local, I can tell you everything Marvin said about the Docheff's and city council was true and accurate. Corrupt ass fuckin tiny town

Kremmling?

I lived in Summit at the time and worked at the local copy shop in Frisco and a few times we'd get this guy from Kremmling come in and he was making some kind of weird anti-gov't flyers and would talk about how he sympathized with Heemeyer and how corrupt the county was. I thought for sure he was going to be on the news at some point for doing the same thing.

1

u/BantedHam 44m ago

Lol I've met that dude, but no. I'm not gunna dox my town but I was probably pretty close to you when it happened.

Custom assets?

Most of the in-game people and objects are drawn at runtime by plotting out their shapes in 3D and rendering from above. Otherwise, there's a hodgepodge of creative commons photo textures. I originally modeled the Killdozer several years ago in Blender for a game jam project.

How is that different from normal 3d rendering?

3

u/Severe-Bluejay5509 Godot Regular 12h ago

No meshes or 3D camera or stored graphics for those things. Stuff like cars are just prebaked images that store their height so they're lit like a 3d object. Keeps things small and performant so I can have a lot going on at once and it can run on a potato. Also, all the people are drawn completely flat in the same way.

4

u/Severe-Bluejay5509 Godot Regular 12h ago

For the cars it's basically normal mapping, just baked from a 3D model instead of painted, and the dents bend it live when you hit them. The Killdozer itself is baked from my 3d model as well

Nice!

I'm immediately transported to "Return Fire" for the original Playstation. And not JUST because of the music. This is high praise.

The destruction loop looks strong in the clip. Question from someone building in a neighbouring genre: how are you keeping run length honest? My worry with destruction roguelites is that the novelty of breaking things carries the first twenty minutes, and after that build variety has to carry everything — so the second hour is a completely different design problem than the first.

u/_realpaul 14h ago

I would not name my game after a real tragic event that caused harm and death.

6

u/AzTno 13h ago

Only one guy died and that was the driver. Sure it is still tragic with so many people involved.

1

u/PowermanFriendship 14h ago

How do you know it's not named after the 1970's horror film?

6

u/_realpaul 13h ago

Nobody except internet trolls knows that movie and the official wikipedia entry for killdozer redirects to the 2004 event.

At the end of the run do you get to shoot your self?
