At Costco buying a pumpkin today. It didn’t have a barcode, so they had to walkie the number - the guy on the other end knew it by heart - “80085”

There's a couple of produce codes that anyone who works produce in any grocery store know by heart, one is 80085 being pumpkins, and another is 4011 being bananas. One because it's funny, another because bananas are the #1 seller in produce.

I know 4011 by heart and I’ve never worked in a grocery store. But my dad did once upon a time.

u/dare2smile 2d ago
I also know 4011 by heart but it’s because everyone mentions it can’t time grocery codes come up lol

I know 4011 by heart because it was my home address and I also worked at a grocery store.

Me too. My son won't stop singing the song...
Chicken, 4011..
Chicken, 4011....
Chicken, 4011, 4011, 4011.....

That 5 digit is Costco specific.
PLUs are 4 digits that start with either a 4 or 3, with a possible 9 prefix for organic. 4011 bananas, 4062 cucumbers, 94131 organic Fuji apples. My goto quick-check to see if a scale had fully loaded a PLU file correctly was 3440 Pomegranate, mainly because I knew it was near the end of the database file my company used, where they went 94xxx, 04xxx, 93xxx, and lastly 03xxx for whatever reason.
The pumpkins I remember from way back are the 2 decorative: 4734 mini pumpkins, 4735 large pumpkins for like carving. Sweet/baking pumpkins started with a 3. 3134? something near there.

u/Tricky_Spirit 2d ago
Oh man, I think you're right on the pumpkins. I may have just remembered it from there and just deleted the other number. Also the 9 prepending organics, I thought it was 8 but I'm running off of poor memory from ~2017 and didn't get much organic sales since I worked graveyard shift.

Yeah, I got excited enough to research PLU codes. Hoping it was true...
Pumpkin
- Decorative / Painted (3131)
- Jumbo (3130)
- Mini (4734), white (3133)
- Ornamental (3135)
- Pie Pumpkin (3134)
- Regular (4735)
- White (3132)

Its been 17 years since i worked in a grocery store and I still remember 5577 is pork chops. I used to be able to list half the department but thats the only one I can still remember.

Man, I only cashiered for like 3 months, but I used to know multiple apples and tomatoes, lemons, limes, pears, peppers all by heart. Though it was best to check to apples and tomatoes since different kinds can look similar.

I worked cashier for ~5 years. I still couldn't tell you all the codes for apple varieties, but I had a dozen codes memorized across produce and the full UPC codes for 24 pack water and distilled water, because I hated pulling them out from underneath the carts so one day when they were stocked up at register, I just studied their number over and over again and wrote it down.
It always surprised customers when they asked if I wanted them to get the water and I'd just tap the screen pointed towards them, laugh and go, "Got it!"

I was a cashier for one summer and I still remember 11 and being pissed when they changed to to 4011.

u/Callinon 2d ago
4060 is broccoli. 4664 for yellow onions.
Was a cashier for 7 years... 20 years ago. My brain let go of most of the codes I'd memorized, but it hung on to a few of them. When I started, the registers that let you search and scroll a list were not yet a thing. We had a laminated sheet of paper with 100+ PLUs on it next to us if we needed to look one up. Fruits tended to have the stickers, but vegetables almost never did, so those were the ones you had to really commit to memory.

Those produce codes are universal for grocery stores.
8
u/Tricky_Spirit 2d ago
Oh yeah, hence why I said 'any grocery store'. The only PLU that wasn't universal at our store was our organic produce was prepended with an 8, so organic bananas were 84011. Which I don't think is a universal code.
6
u/Witticism44 2d ago
At ours, organic was a 9 and then the normal code
3
u/Tricky_Spirit 2d ago
Oh man now you and the guy above have me doubting my memory on organic produce, maybe it was 9 and I'm misremembering. I only ever got to sell organic bananas because one of my regulars preferred them, and working 10PM-6AM, I didn't get a lot of the healthy shoppers, mostly just prison guards grabbing their lunches before shift.

u/HellOfAThing 2d ago
I recognize 80085 from calculators in elementary school. But why is 4011 for bananas funny?

Ooh, I get to tell a proper old person story! When I was a kid, Costco didn’t use scanners, they only used the 5-digit codes. So back then, Costco cashiers knew almost all of the codes by heart. It was pretty impressive.

Was at self checkout and had to get help. Had a nice laugh when I watch the guy punch in the code.

I'm glad I read this comment. I thought you were talking about the word pumpkin being spelled out. 🤪

If it’s like ICE cold I can tolerate it. Would rather drink any other flavor I think though.

They don’t have the poppi blueberry variety pack right now and my son wanted to grab the cranberry. Hold the fucking phone I said
