Please don't be the guy that books a non-aisle seat and then begs to have an aisle seat after boarding.

u/made-of-questions 3d ago
And then they play dumb when you tell them you paid extra so you have the aisle.

I love how most flights don't even let you choose without paying extra
-5
u/ThyEmptyLord 2d ago
I feel like that isn't the case? Most of the time when you checkin you can choose for free, but some seats cost money
6
u/SwedishFlopper 2d ago
I guess it depends on the company. Like I know delta used to be free to choose anywhere in economy. Now of you want to pick a specific seat even in the lowest section you have to pay. Same thing on Alaska airlines
1
u/assenrad 7h ago
Not sure why you are being downvoted, but flying tomorrow and was able to choose my seat for free on Economy on United. I think only the lowest tier doesn't include choosing seats.

That's me when I fly, I go for the aisle seat every time because I have gastrointestinal issues that can cause me to go from 'I'm fine' to 'I'm about to shit myself' in less that 5 seconds.

u/CharcoalGreyWolf 3d ago
I go for the aisle because 6’4” with a 37” inseam and airlines started charging extra for emergency exit seating.
(The way I look at it, if they expect me being “able bodied and willing to assist other passengers in the event of an emergency”, they can provide something in exchange; the extra legroom in this case).

u/rywolf 3d ago
Why did you apply a spoiler to seating?
112
u/Astralfridgemagnet 3d ago
Now you spoiled it!
32
u/CharcoalGreyWolf 3d ago
I didn’t; and it’s odd. Because Reddit has applied spoilers twice to me in the previous 24 hours, and it doesn’t make sense to me.
4
u/TheAndrewBrown 2d ago
I know on mobile there’s now a button for spoiler formatting (although you have to press the general formatting button first to display it). Maybe you somehow accidentally hit that?

As someone with broad shoulders, the aisle seat means getting hit in the shoulders by so many people. The attendants will also happily ram their carts in your knee.
12
2
u/BenOfTomorrow 2d ago
Yeah, I constantly get hit.
I go window - if it’s a wide body I’ll try and get an exit row so I can get up without anyone else having to move, smaller planes flights are generally short enough I don’t get up.

u/cleardemonuk 3d ago
I also do aisle for long limbs. But then, everyone trips over my right foot because the vast majority of people only ever seem to look straight ahead.

I got on a flight a few weeks ago and midway through it developed the first symptoms of norovirus. Luckily i was at the aisle, but got yelled at for getting up during a period of turbulence. But I had to go. Worst flight I’ve had.
I’ve been checking the news for whether I triggered an outbreak. Nothing so far… but I’m sure it would have made the news, like it did recently for another passenger, if I tried to just stay at my seat and hold it.
19
u/JazzlikeDiamond558 3d ago
Norovirus is the worst. Literally chains you to the toilet... and you have to drink a lot of water, otherwise the acid eats your... well... but the more you drink, the worse it gets... you cannot walk, because it makes you go again...absolute disaster.

u/AriaTheTransgressor 3d ago
My partner is going through chemo for a terminal cancer, after each round she ends up in the hospital with Norovirus or C-Diff. We apparently can't do anything about the C-Diff cause it's apparently naturally in your body but her lack of an immune system lets it get out of control.
We have zero idea where she gets Norovirus from. We even tried quarantining her to the bedroom, sealing it off, and only entering in basically hazmat suits and she still got it.

That was the first symptom I had before getting diagnosed with Crohn's disease. A lot of people don't seem to believe how quickly you can go from fine to not.
15
u/shadowtheimpure 3d ago
I've had a colonoscopy and they ruled out Crohn's entirely. They said the issue appears to just be that my body failed to adapt to losing my gallbladder 15 years ago.
4
u/digitaldeadstar 3d ago
Oh man, that's terrible. Is there anything that helps it or just kind of part of the deal now? At least with my Crohn's I can get into remission.

u/shadowtheimpure 2d ago
I usually just fast and take Imodium before getting on the plane. Tends to keep things under control.
4
3
u/SemiFormalJesus 2d ago
I take Imodium the night before I fly and first thing when I wake up in the morning. I don’t think I could get on a plane otherwise.

Tip: skip coffee on the day of your flight
85
u/gn0xious 3d ago
Nah, 4 cups of coffee, 3 egg omelette with extra cheese, and 2 donuts. Live dangerously.

I feel something about being in the air releases all the pressure on your body and allows all the fluid to head to the kidneys. Then creates a desire to drink cold tomato soup from a can.

u/urgentapathy 1d ago
Eat ripe papaya the evening before the flight. Slides right out 2-3 times. Add your stuff plus extra dairy for lactose intolerant peeps. It's a coin flip on whether or not the dairy will increase or decrease the number of punches on the toilet, however they will all be deadly.

I'm an accommodating guy, but if someone said that to me, I would give them the biggest side eye of my life. I'm not going anywhere.
26
u/xyrer 3d ago
My previous to last flight I got the window, there was a kid in the middle so I turn to the mom and said "would your kid prefer the window? I don't mind" so I came up as a courteous guy but in reality I want my aisle seat 😁

3
u/Someshortchick 2d ago
I've traded with a guy who was over 6ft (I'm 5ft) so he would be more comfortable stretching his legs. Mostly I just wanted the window seat hehehehe.

u/dwntwnleroybrwn 3d ago
Years ago I learned that staying hydrated kept me from getting post flight sinus cold. That means regular pees on long flights.
7
u/U_Dun_Know_Who_I_Am 3d ago
Nope, still window. I need to be able to lean/wiggle/adjust without my anxiety screaming that I'm doing something wrong. Either leaning into someone else's space (middle) or blocking the aisle (aisle)
24
u/AsianButBig 2d ago
Been flying 20+ flights a year for decades and I still go for window every time. I can easily last 7 hours not going to bathroom.
9
u/Cold_Tea_Spill112 2d ago
Humans have really only been flying for about 100 years. Most of humanity today won't ever be on a plane. We should consider ourselves so lucky that we get to see the world from above. Window seat is best seat.
4
u/Duggie1330 2d ago
Its literally just the top of a cloud 90% of the time. Trust me it gets old. Most window seaters watch the takeoff and landing then keep the shade up to minimize glare on everyone's phones and tablets.
I fly way more than that guy, up to 150 flights a year, aisle is the way.
I buy 2 big bottles of spring water and make it my goal to drink both and piss it out before we land. A 4 hour flight turns into a hydration campaign and 8 little walks up and down the cabin. Keeps your blood flowing and obviously keeps you hydrated.
Once I adopted this method, I stopped feeling like shit when the plane lands and need the rest of the day off. Now its actually a refreshing experience

u/AsianButBig 2d ago
I like watching the takeoff and landing of different cities around the world. Been to half of the world and still not tired of it. I flew 60 international flights this year alone although my minimum is closer to 20.
Sometimes you get a plane angle of the clouds and the sunset horizon and it feels like another world. Maybe it's to do with art appreciation idk.

u/PorkProofPrion 1d ago
Until you're on a 16 hr flight
3
u/AsianButBig 1d ago
Then even more I want the window seat. Don't want to get woken up or interrupted from work every hour because someone on the inside has to use the bathroom.
2
u/D3cepti0ns 21h ago
Plus, you can rest against the side of the plane. I can't sleep easily with my head straight back.
1
u/MrHippopo 4h ago
I really dont care about the bathroom. I want to get up 10 times a day when I'm working in my comfy office chair. You bet i wanna stand up and stretch several times on a long flight.
28
u/MongoBongoTown 3d ago
True.
I don't even have to go to the bathroom every hour, but it's a good excuse to get up and stretch your legs.
5
u/NoMorePorridge1 3d ago
I often get nasty restless legs, so on long flights, rather than bug my neighbor constantly I just also get up and pace a little every time they go to the bathroom or something, not just when I go.
2
u/CatTheKitten 2d ago
I spent my first redeye flying 6 hours from home. Some douchebag "misread" his ticket and took my aisle seat leaving me with his window seat. I thought I could handle it because I managed the 6 hour outbound fine.
Torture. I bloated so bad that I felt like I was going to pop. Restless legs decided to kick in and were agony. I can't sleep on planes so I spent those 6 hours trying to disassociate as much as possible.
NEVER again. I prefer layovers and only book aisle seats now. I don't know what I'll do when I need to do longer flights
27
u/cdmurray88 3d ago
The window seat sucks even worse if you are somewhat tall as the fuselage radius takes even more leg room away.
36
u/Brave_Negotiation_63 3d ago
It’s worse at the aisle. Fall asleep and then the carts keep hitting your knee. I’d rather lean on the side of the plane.
6
u/racinreaver 3d ago
Darn straight. I've had my knee bashed by the drink cart so many times. Even had feet run over.
3
u/Nattekat 2d ago
I'm tall and absolutely prefer the window seat over the aisle. My legs don't profit that much from the aisle and sitting next to the window gives some nice space for my upper body that I don't have to share with anyone else.
6
u/DrNipSlip 1d ago
As a broad shoulder individual, window seat all day. I hardly get up to do anything when I'm on the plane anyway.
3
u/Zarkanthrex 3d ago
I like the aisle seats more as an adult. I need that tiny bit of extra legroom or my joints start to ache.
8
u/Paratrooperkid 3d ago
My wife and I always used to book the aisle and the window and leave a seat in the middle. Whenever we would get on the plane it was a win-win. If nobody booked the middle seat we got extra space. If someone did, we’d ask if we could switch to sit next to each-other, and they’d always oblige because it meant giving up a middle seat for an aisle or a window which is always a win.
32
u/XIIGage 3d ago
I just had a flight where I was this middle seat person. But they didn't want to switch seats and sit next to each other and their son was in the seat behind us.. so they just kept handing shit and talking to each other with me between them.
1
u/assenrad 7h ago
That's a bummer. My wife and I don't offer to switch but we also don't interact during the flight.
-4
u/izzyusa 3d ago
Thank you for this lifehack!
5
u/DSOTMAnimals 2d ago
It almost never works now-a-days because flights are always overbooked. It might work if you know your flight isn’t always fully booked. Back in the day flights weren’t nearly as full. My first flight my sister and I had almost the whole plane to ourselves, there and back.
I’m not a heavy flier, about 3-5 times a year. But in the 100 or so flights I’ve taken in the last 10 years, I’ve probably had a middle seat open maybe twice.

u/lia-delrey 3d ago
I just don't wanna have to take my headphones out and awkwardly go excuuuuuse me? every time I have to get up

Friend group meets at home before going out. Friend B goes to the bathroom 3 times in an hour before we leave then again at the restaurant. He has had some notible weight gain in the last 6 months and we had a talk about talking to his doctor.
