This just seems like a “you don’t say” kind of study. I mean, is anybody really surprised?

It’s important to quantify and document, for reasons both legal and scientific.

I'll never, ever understand why the administration at the time mandated BP be the ones to clean up the spill.

My out my butt theory is that it was a bit relief to aid them, they looked accountable and it was probably cheaper than the government area going multiple massive contractors to do it themselves and then billing our (at the time) closest allies' major oil firm

yes...

I'm well aware it was cheaper.

Which is why I'm pissed that we cut-corners and had BP destroy the Gulf Environment to "Save tax payer dollars"

My shocked pikachu face

This was that administration's biggest failure: Making BP be the ones to "Clean up" the Deep Water Horizon spill.

How did they "Clean it up"?

They put a chemical on the oil that made it sink to the bottom of the ocean.... https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2015/04/bp-corexit-deepwater-horizon-epa-dispersant/

Shrimpers at the time saw an immediate change in the shrimp they were pulling out of the Gulf - many having black 'substances' in their guts.

The changes were immediate: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0108884

Toxic Tar Balls were rolling up onto the beach weeks after: https://www.emeraldcoastwritersinc.org/the-spill/a-tale-of-two-beaches:-the-bp-oil-spill,-before-and-after

The story was ditched in the media cycle... folks moved on.... US Shrimp died out and fisheries suffered immediate and lasting economic hits: https://www.voanews.com/a/usa_us-gulf-region-still-struggling-10-years-after-bp-oil-spill/6193343.html

The entire recovery was absolutely mishandled. BP should have been banned from drilling new wells for 5 years pending a major investigation into the issue, a temporary halt of all BP operations should have been done in the short term, allowing fed inspectors to look at every single BP and BP Contracted site.

FEMA should have been in charge of cleaning the oil. Mandating BP, who had already cut corners and caused the event, to clean up the oil spill was asinine.

The Gulf waters are never, ever going to be the same again thanks to this horrific lapse in judgement.
