Help Thread The Imperial Council - /r/eu4 Weekly General Help Thread: October 19 2026

Please check our previous Imperial Council thread for any questions left unanswered

Welcome to the Imperial Council of r/eu4, where your trusted and most knowledgeable advisors stand ready to help you in matters of state and conquest.

This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your Ironman game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the master tacticians of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your Ironman save, then you've found the right place!

Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (diplomatic, political, trade, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, ideas, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, ideas, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.

Tactician's Library:

Below is a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!

Calling all imperial councillors! Many of our linked guides pre-Dharma (1.26) are missing strategy regarding mission trees. Any help in putting together updated guides is greatly appreciated! Further, if you're answering a question in this thread, chances are you've used the EU4 wiki and know how valuable a resource it can be. When you answer a question, consider checking whether the wiki has that information where you would expect to find it, and adding to the wiki if it does not. In fact, anybody can help contribute to the wiki - a good starting point is the work needed page. Before editing the wiki, please read the style guidelines for posting.

Trying to restore the Roman Empire as Byzantium. Managed to defeat the Ottomans twice and take back lots of the western shore, but after the second time, they got beaten so badly they exploded into nationalist rebels.

The next year, I beat France, who was defending Genoa, forcibly freed Toulouse and Brittany, and then they exploded when they went bankrupt and rebels rose up everywhere.

Never seen Ming survive their disasters, and it looked like that was gonna be the case in my Tall Bahmani game. As they were crumbling, i sent them about 5k ducats total (around 1580 - 1600) and went about my developing. Looked back up and saw them reconquer the few breakaways, stabilize, and recover. Pretty cool!

And can I just say how ridiculous it is that a stable, technologically up to date Ming with nearly all of China has such low dev? Why did they do that to China maaaaaaaan

Is eu4 your only grand strategy game or maybe you rotate it with ck3, v3 or hoi4? If yes, which one you play most? (Maybe in precentage)

Question Why are client state names shorter than custom nation names and is there a way around it?

If I want to make a client state called 'Grand Duchy of Baden' it will let me type it all out, and even spawn it with that name. Then, on the second screen, where you pick the flag and colours, the name is cut short to 'Grand Duchy of Bad' and when you finish customising the flag, the name gets changed. If you do the same thing when making a custom nation, the name doesn't get cut off and it exists with no issues with a longer name. Is there a way I can have the longer name?

R5: Portugal converted to coptic while I wasn't watching. I don't know how, it's the first time I see that. It's probably caused by rebels in Africa

R5: this is my most successful try as the Teutons. I’ve tried before but I never gotten this wide or this far as them (1714). Im just proud to have my vision actually be done (mostly). I did want to own all of Eastern Europe but the game was becoming a little boring with how strong I am. Idk how to end this so.

Achievement I HAAAATE ally ai

Defensive war karaman (already won one war against ottos so buffed) mamluks, hungary, crimea. Ottomans got irrelevant allies we quickly dispose off, no major defeats (stackwipes or important cities sieged down) careful grind to get rid of ottos allies, wear down their armies atc suddenly both mamluks and hungary peace out, we had twice their army but they were always to afraid of ottos army to properly engage, never attached to my army, just absolutly embaressing performance from those countries, we could easily have won if they weren't stupid as fuck.

Achievement Deus Vult

Favourite campaign to date and definitely been a white whale for a while and know it is for others, so i thought i would share.

Brief overview

Started as Rhodes

Used a diplo rep adviser and the diplo rep clergy estate perk to pick up an Alliance with Venice and Poland/Lithuania. Was very luck none of them rivaled the other.

Cot claims on Morea via sway pope event. Conquered the Byzantines primarily through the help of Venice as the Ottomans will not give you military access. This did require me giving them Athens. i did eventually turn on them down the line.

Waited for Ottomans to have a eastern war with the timurids then used my Alliances to attack. Was incredibly lucky that Hungary also declared as well as the Mamluks which saw the Ottomans broken very early on.

Went religious first, in hindsight unsure if ideal for first choice but was incredible when i finally got a strong economic base. i mainly decided to do this due to the fact all the land i would be conquering was either orthodox or muslim. Rhodes itself is orthodox

Spent a long time consolidating and repairing my economy/military. formed the Latin Empire after conqurign Greece and then started my campaigns against the Mamluks as they had swallowed most of Anatolia other than the provinces i owned, this was where religious ideas were suer strong as i was able to keep my AE minimal despita taking swathes of land. I then formed Jerusalem and picked up both the On the Rhodes Again and Kingdom of Jerusalem achievement.

Prior to becoming revolutionary, France was my greatest asset as they had a personal Union over the Commonwealth.

For the Knights of the Carribean achievement i had to take on a very strong Spain for there Mediterranean islands and the Carribean. Thanks to this sub reddit i found out that you can conquer the Caribbean and aslong as you dont core the provinces it will count towards the achievement as a colonial nation wont form.

Question Monarchy of a dead culture

Playing Livonian Order > Livonia > Prussia for the Almost Prussian Blue + For the Emperor achievements.

I changed my culture to Prussian after conquering the Teutonic Order, and forced the provinces of Latvia and Estonia to adopt Prussian culture. After obtaining the Almost Prussian Blue achievement, I formed Prussia and my capital was moved to Berlin. Latvian culture has not existed anywhere for two centuries. Yet all my kings, since I formed Livonia, belong to the Hainaut dynasty and have Latvian culture.

Why? Will I be forced to remain Latvian until 1820? It doesn't seem to affect the gameplay much, but it looks like a silly bug.

Image You have got to love VH

Post image

R5: it's 1528 and the Ottomans have 322k troops. On top of the VH +50% max force limit modifier, they picked quantity and quality too, as they usually do.
This makes the Very Hard difficulty setting a lot more competitive for a lot longer than people playing on normal would imagine being possible. To be clear: it's not a revelation, just a reminder. Lots of folks knew this already, but if you are bored on normal and don't know how to spice things up exactly, you need to try VH.

Question Armenia subject mission tree help

Bit of a crackpot idea here - I'm sure many here already know that Armenia has a few missions in their tree that creates a centre of trade in provinces that don't already have one, and this is abusable by releasing them as a subject, doing the missions for them and then annexing for free CoTs.

I've done the Caspian sea mission that gives a CoT in Shirvan and the devving mission that creates another CoT in their capital, in this case Van. Now I realized they border the province they need to do the mission where they reclaim their old capital, Tigranakert which gives a permanent devving cost reduction and +10% trade power in Dyarbakir. So I can meet the requirements for that mission, give the province to them, and get more free permanent bonuses.

The mission requires converting the culture of Dyarbakir from Kurdish to Armenian, devving/building in it and having it be coptic and owned by Armenia. I can do the culture conversion and devving/building myself, but I'm not coptic so I'll need them to convert it themselves after I give it to them. Is there any guarantee that the AI will do this? Currently their cashflow is positive and they have heretic provinces but they don't have an active missionary so it seems the AI isn't just gonna convert when they can.

Might be a bit too niche of a question but I figure I might as well as

Poland got eaten up by Hungary and Bohemia after declining the union with Lithuania. Austria attacked into an already strong Hungary after it got the BI and lost, getting dogpiled by Venice and Bohemia. Oh and Hungary attacked the 80k Ottos and defeated them.
