Or Why We Must Keep Up Our Empowerment of Petroleum to Get to Net Zero
https://extinctionati.substack.com/p/manjana-baby

Someone asked, prompting the creation of this short summary:

Dialogue has an implicit ethical dimension because it repeatedly tests boundaries between accurate description of physical reality and deliberate management or 'massaging' of what the public is allowed to understand.

The core requests are not simply for scientific clarification. They ask for help constructing or softening definitions (of net zero, of tipping points, of 'committed' versus 'tipped') so that continued or expanded petroleum use can appear compatible with climate targets, while keeping ordinary people calm and hopeful enough to keep consuming. That is a question of whether it is acceptable to shape public understanding of physical facts in service of economic or political stability and continuity.

Some related ethical threads that run through the dialogue:

• Whether low public literacy about tipping points should be treated as a problem to be solved with clearer information, or as a condition that can be maintained or further eroded for social stability.
• Whether scientists' communication choices (progressive danger versus stronger threshold language) are ordinary professional disagreements or part of a longer pattern of managing public alarm.
• What duties exist when institutions or industries have long-standing knowledge of risks from their products and have influenced the pace and framing of the response.
• Whether 'keeping a stiff upper lip' and protecting consumption during serious planetary change justifies reducing the precision of the concepts people use to understand that change.

In short, the dialogue keeps returning to the ethics of truthfulness in public communication about irreversible or hard-to-reverse physical processes, and about whether the meaning of key terms should stay anchored to those processes or be adjusted to protect existing economic patterns. That is why ethics is not a side issue here. It is the underlying conflict the dialogue keeps circling.

Things to tell politicians (and others) to better them (including for nature) Part 1

We need people to send a selection of these ideas to others. One issue regarding these matters is sustaining the attention of the people who need convincing.

How much You help the universe and beyond is worth much more than power (this help is much more important)! How much You help usually dwarfs power, and is more effective then power (both in benefit to You and others). It makes You much more fulfilled! Benefit, rather than just power, is a wise allocation of energy, rather than potential energy and/or a less wise allocation of energy. Effective Benefit applied to others rather than just You can amplify the effect More than a billion fold (due to more efficient action (for example: saying something good to every human rather than just Yourself, or increasing taxes on the rich) (and way More if it benefits all animals))!

Respect what is there! Respect what there is!

The universe and beyond is more important than any person, this means it is better to improve the universe and beyond rather than just Yourself! Keep this in mind. It is deceptively obvious and ever so easy, and perhaps even potentially harmful, to neglect. After all: The universe contains You!

To get the best outcome: Align with the universe and beyond! To be the most powerful: Convince and lead beings to align with the universe and beyond, strive for the best, be proactive, be a guide, etc. Turn everything into an advantage for the universe and beyond! Waste Least!

Look at beings through a caring/understanding lens. Enjoy things positive to the universe and beyond. Health of beings everywhere is a top priority! Grow the universe and beyond rather than just You! Using Yourself is more efficient and effective when You improve the universe and beyond rather than just Yourself! (Recursively) Mirror the universe and beyond! Build momentum! Help the universe build momentum!

Improve, Improve, Improve!

Conservation for the ideal moments! Though always (continuously) do Your best! Make deals (deals are agreements (a form of working together))! Turn enemies into friends!

Lots of citizens notice when their leaders are disrespectful (and other wrong things many leaders do)! Optimise the people-political disconnect!

Money is only one form of power. Money is far aligned from everything! So step out of the money box!

Consider: Be playful!

In many cases: It's cheaper to recycle!

One of the biggest failings of most politicians (at time of writing) is their lack of care for nature and the environment! Harming the environment harms You! You want to preserve the continuity of the universe, not hurt other important parts of it! Exploitation involves destruction of good. Exploitation is an inferior practice.

Please share the parts of this that resonate with You!

STORIES Episode Eleven: The Verdict

Post image

Year Z : Chain of Custody. An investigative series
https://extinctionati.substack.com/p/episode-eleven-the-verdict

Back to the room

Return, for the last time, to New York, November 4, 1959. A room full of oil executives celebrating a hundred years of an industry that made most of them wealthy. A physicist at the podium, telling them that what they sold could submerge the city they were standing in, and, pressed on how much warming to expect, answering honestly rather than confidently: “our planet will get a little warmer... it is hard to say whether it will be 2 degrees Fahrenheit or only one or 5.” Six years later, it was Frank Ikard, API’s own president by then, telling the same industry what a federal report had just told President Johnson: “there is still time to save the world’s peoples from the catastrophic consequence of pollution, but time is running out.”
Eleven episodes later, this series owes that room, and you, an honest accounting of what actually got proven along the way, and what didn’t.

What Is Established

The industry knew, early, and knew because it paid to know. It funded the researcher who built the instrument that would later measure its own guilt. It commissioned reports that told it, in writing, what was coming. It convened a private task force in 1979, was told the truth, and published a public document six months later that contradicted it. In 2004, a different branch of the same industry personally suggested the central metaphor of one of the most influential climate papers ever written, shared editorial drafts with its authors, and timed its own endorsement to the paper’s release, a fact the paper’s own co-author confirmed. None of that is inference.
The press failed on its own terms, not through capture but through inherited habits, and took three decades to say so itself.
Norway’s public broadcaster produced a three-year stale number on its own climate pages, let a flattering national statistic travel without the context that would have complicated it, and, in writing, on January 14, 2020, formally redirected its climate coverage toward how action happens rather than whether it should, a real, dated, named document, not a pattern inferred from absence.

What Is Strong Circumstantial Case, Not Proof

The method proven against Patterson, and proven again in the 2004 case, is structurally identical to what a rational actor would deploy against any inconvenient science. That a version of it operated on climate knowledge in the 1960s and ‘70s is a reasonable, evidence-supported inference, not an equivalent paper trail.
Testing it against the present produced two real, separate findings, neither proving the other. A Norwegian scientist, one year after co-authoring the study proving his own country’s near-total ignorance of tipping points, delivered a podcast appearance that softened exactly two of his own specialties while leaving three other systems at full strength, a specific, sourced, individual pattern. Separately, a real institution has the underlying mechanism in writing. Nothing connects the scientist’s podcast to the broadcaster’s strategy, different outlets, no shared chain. What connects them is only that both exist, independently, in the same country, in the same recent years, both doing the same quiet thing without needing to coordinate to do it.

What Remains Genuinely Unknown

Whether a precise physical threshold exists, and whether the century of silence spanned the years disclosure might have mattered, remains the oldest question this series opened with, and it closes without fully answering it. The 0.5°C and 0.3–0.4°C reasoning offered along the way was labeled speculative when it was made and remains speculative now.
What this series has found since are real, dated, sector-specific thresholds that sit alongside that speculation without resolving it. Eric Rignot, 2014, on a specific sector of West Antarctica: “past the point of no return.” King and Howat, 2020, on Greenland’s dynamic ice discharge: “we’ve passed the point of no return,” dated to approximately 2000.
One more marker belongs alongside those two, cruder than either, but worth having precisely because of where it came from. Teller’s own 1959 trigger, a ten percent rise in CO2 “could be enough to melt the icecaps,” wasn’t a scientific threshold in any rigorous sense, he said so himself, hedging the resulting warming at “2 degrees Fahrenheit or only one or 5.” But his stated number is checkable against the actual record. Atmospheric CO2 in 1959 stood at 316 parts per million. A ten percent rise, 347.6 ppm, was crossed in 1986, matched almost to the decimal point.
That’s not a claim that the icecaps finished melting in 1986, they hadn’t, and haven’t now. It’s a trigger claim, not a completion claim, this series has been careful about that distinction throughout. But read as exactly that, a trigger, it places the industry’s own 1959 warning, by its own stated number, inside the same multi-decade window as Pine Island’s documented commitment in the 1940s through ‘70s and Greenland’s in approximately 2000. Three separate markers, three separate sources, a rough one from the room this series opened in, and two rigorous ones from researchers decades later, all landing in the same narrow span of the twentieth century.
Neither confirms a single, global Year Z. What they confirm is narrower: specific, major pieces of the planet’s ice were already, verifiably, committed to serious loss by dates close to the ones speculated about here for entirely different reasons.

The Verdict

Not a date. A pattern, proven in its outline: warned, repeatedly, by researchers the industry itself paid; silent, repeatedly, when the warning became inconvenient; and followed, decades later, by institutions built to catch exactly this kind of failure, and didn’t, not in time, not completely, some of them not yet, and at least one of them, by its own hand, writing down the reason why.
That’s what the room in 1959 actually contained, looked at plainly. Not a single moment when the case was decided. A moment when it became, from that point forward, genuinely impossible to say nobody had been told.
Whatever Year Z turns out to be, if it turns out to be anything at all, it was sitting in that room already, while a physicist, hedging honestly, explained the mechanism, and a room full of men who could have said something out loud chose, instead, to write it down privately and keep celebrating.

End.

STORIES Episode Ten: Means, Motive, Opportunity

Post image
3 Upvotes

Year Z : Chain of Custody. An investigative series
https://extinctionati.substack.com/p/episode-ten-means-motive-opportunity

The current target

Every case built on a documented past has to eventually ask whether the pattern is still active. This episode turns from history to the present tense, and asks a narrower, harder question than anything this series has attempted before: is there an ongoing effort to fog the one body of science that would make the rest of this case unavoidable?

Why This Would Be the Target, If There Is One

Average-warming science, however severe the number, is negotiable within the policy architecture this series has documented: continuous targets, carbon budgets, net-zero pledges, a COP process that produces promises rather than binding cuts. That architecture rests on one assumption: climate change is a dial, something that can always be turned back down later if action comes sooner rather than immediately.
Tipping-cascade science says that, in specific and important cases, it isn’t a dial. It’s a switch. Cross a threshold once, and the outcome runs on its own, for centuries, regardless of what emissions do afterward. If that claim holds, it invalidates the premise that gradual, negotiated, budget-based action is sufficient at all. On means, motive, and opportunity alone, this would be the single most valuable finding in the field to keep vague.

The Historical Precedent

Two documented cases establish that the method itself is real, long before anyone asks whether it’s active today. Hansen’s own account, “scientific reticence”: after he and colleagues published on ice sheet instability in 1981, the US Department of Energy reversed a funding decision and criticized the paper publicly. Caution was rewarded; alarm wasn’t.
The second case is stronger. In 2004, Princeton researchers Pacala and Socolow published “Stabilization Wedges,” framing climate change as solvable through incremental, current technology. A 2026 investigation found the paper’s central metaphor was personally suggested by BP’s own chief executive, that drafts were shared with BP before submission, and that Socolow himself said the paper would likely never have existed without BP’s funding. That’s the method, fully documented: not attacking the alarming finding directly, but funding and shaping a calmer rival narrative to arrive exactly when it would do the most good.

The Present-Day Evidence, Part One: A Document, Not a Pattern

This series doesn’t need to speculate about whether a version of this exists today. One piece of it is written down, current, and dated.
On January 14, 2020, Norway’s public broadcaster formally adopted a climate content strategy. Its stated goals read as genuinely well-intentioned: fact-based coverage, an explicit warning against false balance, a mission to “strengthen and develop democracy.” Nothing in it resembles a captured institution. And it contains this instruction: “our coverage should primarily be about how action is taken, not about whether action should be taken.”
That’s a real, present-day, named institution, choosing, in writing, to redirect its climate coverage away from documenting threat and toward documenting solution. It isn’t evidence of external pressure, nothing in the document points outward, and its own reasoning is coherent on its own terms. But it is direct, dated proof that the mechanism this episode is asking about, not denial, but a quiet redirection of emphasis, operates today, inside a real newsroom, not just in 1981 or 2004.

The Present-Day Evidence, Part Two: One Scientist, Tested Directly

A second test, run against an individual rather than an institution. A Norwegian tipping-point scientist co-authored, in 2024, the study proving his own country’s near-total ignorance of this subject. One year later, he appeared on a podcast built around that exact concept.
Across two of his own specific areas of expertise, Greenland and permafrost, a consistent pattern holds: the live version omits exactly the clause that would have carried urgency, while the fuller, more alarming version survives in his own written work. The same appearance delivers three other systems, AMOC, the Amazon, coral, at full, unhedged strength, which rules out a blanket explanation and sharpens the finding to precisely two subjects.
That podcast has no institutional connection to the broadcaster whose strategy opens this section, different outlet, different editorial chain, nothing linking them on paper. What links them is a shape, not a pipeline: two separate, independently documented actors, tested on their own terms, both converging on the same emphasis, in the same country, in the same recent years.

The Verdict This Episode Can Actually Return

Means and motive are established for the industry generally. Method is established, twice over, with named actors and dated documents, from two historical cases.
What’s new here, and what earlier drafts of this chapter couldn’t yet claim: the method isn’t only historical. A real institution has it in writing, today. A real scientist’s own words show its effect, today. Neither proves the other caused it. Neither requires that it did. What’s proven is narrower and, for that reason, more defensible: the mechanism this whole episode set out to test for is not hypothetical. It’s operating, currently, documented in two independent places, without needing a single coordinating hand to explain why.

Next episode: this series has laid out means, motive, method, proven twice historically and found operating today, in two separate, unconnected places. What it hasn’t done yet is return to the room where this all started, and ask what verdict the evidence actually supports.

Episode may contain traces of real dialogue w/ artificial interpretations of human intelligence
