People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that
If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.
As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.
We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.
Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

Have you come across an asian looking dude that keeps speaking by himself on the streets? Sometimes he's aggressive and shit, sometimes just speaks some random shit, but is always loud. Have you come across this dude, and would you know his story? I'm just curious

Hi guys, I’m moving to Australia next year and I am going to rent out my property in Waitati.
The section has parts that cannot be mowed, which is covered in weeds. (Some big clumps of grass etc.)
I want to make this area low maintenance.
I don’t have hundreds of dollars to pay someone but my friend has a weed sprayer thing
Can anyone tell me what I should do? Should I just spray those weeds then dig them out then cover with weed mat and bark?
If I can’t do the whole job myself, I would be willing to hire a couple of students from student job search to dig up the weeds once they are dead, and put down the bark, etc
Will try to do the spraying part myself though .
I have a Weedwhacker, but there’s too many weeds. I need to get rid of them all to make it low maintenance for tenants.
Thanks !!
Edit: of course if I hire the students, I will give them a proper payment (just in case someone was doubting that part)

Haven’t seen much info about Knox. What’s it like and is it isolating from the halls in the uni area? What’s the drinking culture like?is it more academic? I haven’t got in yet but hoping to.

Hello, I'm hoping for some honest feedback on experiences on these intermediate schools, both good and bad.
Trying to plan ahead for our kids.
Thanks 🙂

Hi! :)
I’m currently a high school student and I’m hoping to study nursing at Otago Polytechnic in the future.
I spoke to some lovely people from Otago Polytech at a careers expo this year, and they told me a bit about the application process. One thing I remember very clearly was being told that volunteering can help your application stand out. Unfortunately, she was a very fast speaker, so I didn’t manage to remember much else of what she said.
For anyone who has applied to or studied nursing at Otago Polytech in the past 10 years:
- Did you do any volunteering, and did you feel like it helped your application?
- What do you think are the most important things to have on your application?
- Do you need to be exceptionally good at subjects like biology and chemistry, or are Achieved grades generally okay?
- Does anyone know roughly how many people apply compared with how many are accepted each year? I think I heard that over 500 people applied this year, but I might be wrong lol
- Is there anything else you would recommend doing during high school to make my application stronger?
- I'm only taking biology next year since I'm not the biggest fan of chem. Will that still be okay? Chemistry is still one of my backups, though. I haven't failed any science assement this year.
I’m obviously not in any rush to apply (especially since applications have already closed), but I’d love to hear from anyone who has gone through the process so I can prepare well!
Thank you!!

Are there other haunted house events in Dunedin that aren't run by FearNZ?
