Showcase Komicove - Open Source Manga Reader

Post image

Hey everyone!

I've been working on Komicove, a free and open-source comic and manga reader for Android, Windows, and Linux.

I originally started this project while learning Python, combining programming with my love for comics and manga. Since then, I've been improving it based on feedback from people who've tried it.

I recently released v0.2.2, which brings one of the biggest additions so far: experimental OCR-based comic and manga translation!

The app can attempt to detect text in speech bubbles and narration boxes, translate it, and overlay the translated text onto the original page. You can translate individual pages or entire comics, with options for local AI or a user-configured API.

Translation is still in early alpha, so it's not perfect yet, but I'm actively working on improving it.

Other features:

  • Library with covers, collections, favorites, and reading progress.
  • Guided reading with automatic panel detection.
  • Manga mode, double-page view, vertical scrolling, and zoom.
  • Reading progress and favorites syncing between Android and PC.
  • Support for CBZ, CBR, PDF, and other formats.
  • Offline reading without an account or ads.

What's new in v0.2.2?

Besides translation, I've improved library performance, cover caching, guided reading, and overall stability.

The app is completely free, open source, and doesn't contain ads.

Quick note: My previous Reddit account, u/Middle-Income1105, was restricted due to an age verification issue. I've contacted Reddit Support, and they're aware of the situation.

I'd really appreciate feedback, especially from Android users!

What do you think of the interface and features? Is there anything you'd like to see improved or added?

Thanks for checking it out! :)
