Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next
Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, fancasts, wish lists, and other hot takes in here:
- Fancasts: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
- Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner? What production/media company would you like distributing it?
- Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.
A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.
Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.
Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every weekend.
Let's hear what you've got.

Speculation/Theory The 12th Doctor stole this guitar and had a string of misadventures in the American southwest
This is more speculation than theory. It’s something I’ve never seen discussed or — to my knowledge — covered in any expanded media:
Before showing up at Clara’s diner in “Hell Bent”, the Doctor has apparently been wandering around looking for the TARDIS. We see him being found in the desert in Nevada (after the memory wipe) by a man driving an orange sedan, and later (earlier in the episode, but later chronologically) dropped off at the diner by someone in a red pickup truck.
When Clara and Me show up, it doesn’t seem like it’s been a long time from their perspective, but they’re obviously just learning to use their new TARDIS (given the fact that the chameleon circuit isn’t functional), so it‘s possible they left the Doctor on his own for longer than they meant to. It’s also not clear how they managed to get his TARDIS to the US from London (we know it wasn’t materialized there because Rigsy’s artwork was intact, and we clearly see that it flakes apart the moment the Doctor dematerializes it at the end of the episode).
In any case, we know that somewhere between getting dropped off in Nevada and walking into the diner, the Doctor got new clothes and a new guitar (a rather classy Epiphone SG with a Bigsby vibrato unit). He also may or may not have stolen the guitar, since he confesses to Clara at the diner that he doesn’t have any money (and I can’t decide whether spending the only money he has on that guitar would be out of character or extremely on brand for the 12th Doctor).
All of this implies that for a period of time, a slightly amnesiac Doctor was wandering the southwest, hitchhiking, and playing guitar while searching for the TARDIS and trying to piece together the gaps in his memory of his time with Clara. Knowing him, and given that the state of Nevada is a hub of UFO sightings and reports of extraterrestrial activity, I would not be surprised if the Doctor had a few encounters and defeated a few baddies during this time.
I don’t know, man. I just think that’s… really cool. Would love to see a comic that takes place during that time and fills in the blanks.

Discussion Which of Ncuti's outfits do you think will be remembered as THE Fifteenth Doctor look?
The Fifteenth Doctor was fairly unique in changing outfit almost every episode, but which do you think will end up being the "definitive" - or as close to it - look that gets remembered when people think of Fifteen years or decades later?
I think there are three main contenders:
Image 1 is the publicity reveal outfit that the BBC used to announce Gatwa as The Doctor. It's the first real look at the character, so is a key image for posterity, even though I'm not sure it was used in an episode.
Image 2 is his debut look in The Church on Ruby Road, his first true outing as The Doctor, making it iconic; the way viewers first saw him.
Image 3 is from the finale, but its introduction felt like apotheosis, The Doctor finally arriving. As it's the last anyone saw of Fifteen, it's also the lingering memory viewers will have of him (and I think the most "Doctory" of his outfits).
Do you agree/disagree with any of these in particular, or think another outfit will be the best remembered? Or does the fact that he changed clothes so often mean he won't be remembered with a distinctive look at all?
Or put another way, when we next get a line up composite shot of every incarnation of the Doctor, what's Fifteen going to be wearing in that?

Discussion The First & Second Doctors really were just dealing with shenanigans constantly
Thinking about the overview of the eras, almost 90% of their stories tie into the next one, meaning essentially One & Two were going from one mess immediately into the next one, while other Doctors could reasonably have stretches of time between their stories. The 60s Doctors were essentially ping-ponged around the universe fighting Daleks one day and immediately after dealing with the Cybermen, before back to dealing with humanity, and so on.
No wonder from a story perspective for the First Doctor he "wore abit thin" and regenerated during Season 4, that season really was just The Doctor endlessly going from one mess to another. With a small break between The Macra Terror and The Faceless Ones implied.

Discussion Watched “The Power of the Doctor” for the first time
Somehow I had never had it spoiled for me that Ace and Tegan returned, so when I saw Sophie Aldred’s name in the intro I got goosebumps and when she was first shown on screen I may have jumped out of my seat and hollered. Then i kind of chuckled to myself thinking about how awesome Doctor Who is for the fact that as fans we will get hyped up by the appearance of a middle-aged woman the same way Marvel fans lose their minds over Thor picking up Cap’s shield or something.

Discussion Douglas Adams explains how humour works in Dr Who.
Douglas Adams had this to say about humour in Dr Who (and drama in general)
'I think that Doctor Who is at its best when the humour and the drama work together and that however absurd a situation may be, it is actually very, very real and it has very real consequences. That's the moment at which something that's inherently absurd actually becomes frightening.'
'A danger one runs is that the moment you have anything in the script that's clearly meant to be funny in some way, everybody thinks 'oh well we can do silly voices and silly walks and so on', and I think that's exactly the wrong way to do it.'
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0010930/quotes/
What he is saying here is that humour in DW is good encouraged actually. But the humour must complement the drama/story telling not take away from it. Character making humour than character breaking humour.
Like a good example is The 11th Hour, there is a lot of comedy in that episode, but its all with in character and the characters still take the situation seriously. Amy is mad at the Dr for showing up to her as a little girl and everyone thinks shes crazy because of it. The humour helps demostrate Amy's fisty personality.
Contrast with Space Babies were the humour is snot poo and farts. Plus silly baby and robot voices. So it kills any sense of drama the episode might have had. Or in TWATBLAST where for no reason Salt and Barclay start hurling stones at windows. We learn nothing about Ruby from the body secretions jokes in Space Babies.
Or if we take Classic Who as an example. In the Invasion Tobias Vaughn hands Jamie a portable radio and Jamie says how dose it work as it plays music? The Dr then presses the off button and says 'that's how you turn it off Jamie'. Or any scene were Vaughn is bellowing at Packer.
While in Revenge of the Cybermen the Dr starts playing at yogo while the Cybermen are forcing him and two crewmen to commit mass genocide. In other words the Dr isn't taking it seriously so its impossible for the audiance to. Even though every other character is playing it stright.
Its like that Bathoes humour that Marval movies love doing. Ie undermining a serious or dramatic moment with a joke. Like if the 'he's right behind me isn't he' or the baddie is giving a speech but then it cuts to the character seeing that he is upside down on the screen.
Oh and before anyone says, there is a huge difference between that and the Dr taking the micky out of the baddie. Like Sharaz Jek asks the Dr how he got passed his android and he quips 'I guess it just liked my face'. Since in that the Dr is using humour to mask his worry. Also Sharaz Jek responds with 'your sense of humour will be the death of your, Doctor. Probably quite soon'. So we still take him seriously.
In short humour should add to the story and characters never take away from them.

Discussion Hot Take: Lady Cassandra is Top 3 in Doctor Who monsters, in terms of iconoraphy
Not saying she's a top-3 monster, nor in terms of story quality, but when it comes to recognizability and sheer appearance, Cassandra's only competition is the Daleks and Weeping Angels. I have seen Lady Cassandra, COUNTLESS times, appear in videos, TikToks, and even games, believe it or not. And they don't even know Doctor Who!
I live in America, and despite what people say about the Matt Smith era, Doctor Who has NEVER once been mainstream here. It's always been extremely niche, and yet, from friends I've had who don't know what a Dalek is, who have never heard the word "TARDIS", but they certainly know who Lady Cassandra is. There was a Flamingo video posted with 4.7 million views where Lady Cassandra appears in a shitty game. She's so absurd and so uniquely recognizable that she's memed to the point that she appears in content outside of Doctor Who itself.
God, this is a horrid and hilarious example, but when I was in the looney bin, someone referenced Cassandra. Again, I asked them if they ever saw Doctor Who: nope! No idea. Never seen a police box before. And yet, they know Lady Cassandra; they've seen the memes, they know her catchphrase "moisturize me, moisturize me."
Like I said at the beginning, I truly think the only monsters who compare in terms of being known and recognizable are the Daleks and the Weeping Angels. I think, whether or not the fanbase wants to accept it, Lady Cassandra is potentially a powerhouse of content for Doctor Who. And whether or not she's your fav, or you even like her stories, so many people know her. I know it's sacrilege, but show someone (literally anyone outside of the UK) and 9 times out of 10 more people would recognize Cassandra over a Dalek or Cyberman.

Misc Oct. 14, 2014. Throwback to the 19 years old me being super obsessed with DW. 😂
I discovered Doctor Who around June or July 2013. I still remember I was bored during calculus class. So, I searched on Google something that I could watch later when I get home. But I didn't watch Doctor Who until a year later.
So, I binge watch from S1-S7 including specials around July-September 2014. Then, I started watching S8 episodes right away.
I made this silly drawing during physics class because the substitute professor wanted to get to know us (students) better. It was like an ice breaker thing. Sure, I got a few laughs here and there because no one knew Doctor Who. But I didn't care, it was actually fun. The professor loved it. He said that he might watch the show one day. I'm not sure if he did though.
Second picture was a screenshot of my Tumblr inbox back in 2015 Doctor Who Day (Anniversary). I remember I wrote an entry for 'Doctor Who Day' but I can't remember, I'm not sure if it was for something that they could choose to post on their social media.
What I wrote was about me finding and discovering the show during the darkest part of my life. Back then, it had been a year since my mother passed away. Watching the show gave me sense of I'm not alone and hope for the future. That was what I wrote about and I tagged them.
Two days later, I didn't expect them (Doctor Who Official Tumblr account) to actually sent me a message. Until now, it still feels surreal to me.
Anyway, I just want to share all of this. I hope you guys are having a great day/night. :)))

Another closet/thrift store look. Although my wife and I did make the waistcoat. Just some cheap fabric from Hobby Lobby. I could upgrade the belt buckle fairly easily. I like doing this one because I can just do my own, regular hair. That's right, those are my natural, luscious locks lol. And these pics are a couple years ago. So, my hair is quite a bit longer now (and sadly, thinner too. Haha) Anyway, always love hearing thoughts from this awesome community!

Arts/Crafts Fan-made DVD Cover for the 10th Doctor
Made a fan cover! Idea was a more modern David Tennant cover that still pulls some design elements from his era of dvd covers (sparks, space debris etc...)
