Showcase Who likes unnecessarily large pedals? 🙋🏼‍♀️

Yeah the guts are a mess, sue me. I'll tidy it later. maybe...

This is one I started like 3 years ago, didn't work right, couldn't be arsed to fix it, set it aside for later and then life got in the way. Finally got around to getting at least the fuzz section in it. Had to rebuild the circuit, the old one was fucked in ways that I couldn't figure out but everything looked fine though. Whatever.

Was supposed to include the boost section as well (hence the suspiciously placed bits of label) which is why it's such a ridiculously large enclosure.

The whole things a mess, but it sounds great and I like my pedals a bit jank anyway, gives them "character" lol.

Haven't built anything for a long while so it was fun to get back into it. Might post the other couple I've done this week as well, they're just as infuriatingly messy and jank.

Help wanted Does anybody want to work with me?

Post image

So, I've been designing pedal circuits for many years now. Made my first one oh, 18 years ago. And at this point, I've got pretty high standards for my circuit designs.

So for example the one in the bottom right is an overdrive. It has two channels, one with variable gain and one with full on fuzz (red switch). One cool feature of this pedal is that when the gain adjusted upwards (big black knob), the output signal level is adjusted slightly down in exactly the right amount such that the clean signal, the max overdrive signal, and the variable overdrive signal are always level-matched no matter where the gain is set. So it never gets audibly louder or quieter when you turn it up, just fuzzier. That way, you can adjust the gain with your toe mid song, and when you go back to a clean sound the volume still matches. Pretty cool! And this pedal is crazy quiet in terms of noise. I've never tried another pedal that had as much noise-free clean gain as this one. It also has pre eq (lows) and post eq (presence) and an octave up circuit for the max gain channel. The other two pedals are a clean boost and a mini mixer. I've got lots of other ideas for pedals too, just ask me.

But the thing is: I'm never going to make these and sell them. I don't have time, and I'm no good at marketing! My designs are good, but currently, they're on my pedal board and nowhere else in the world. So I'm putting the bat signal up and asking: does anyone want to collaborate with me? Want to do it together? It's the marketing and graphic design that is my weak point. I'm a really good engineer and I can do soldering and assembly but I'm not good at selling. DM me if you're interested.

Showcase Amplifier Reverb Control Pedal

I have reverb in my amp and always wanted a quick way to set two different reverb levels and have on/off capabilities on my pedal board. What I cooked up was to design a MCU board pair, one in the amp and one in the remote pedal, that would control a digital potentiometer that replaces the reverb control pot in the amp. That way the audio signal stays entirely in the amp. The main board and the pedal communicate via serial. The pedal is powered from the 6 pin GX12 connector so you do not need a separate power supply for it. When the pedal is not plugged in the reverb pot on the amp works like it normally does.

I've also made this open source so you can make it yourself if you'd like!

(there's a link to a demo video at the bottom of the github page)

Not a standalone effects pedal per se but it does control an effect nonetheless. Hope you like it!

p.s. I have four more sets of boards remaining as there is a minimum board quantity you have to order from JLCPCB. I also thought I would sell the remaining boards and parts as DIY kits and got enclosures made but Tadaya screwed up 4 of the UV prints, so you'll have to redo the enclosure graphics. If you're interested in a DIY kit, DM me.

Boxed up a couple of clones yesterday that had been hanging around unfinished. Fuzz Dog Rattle Crow/Dirty Bird and PPCB Abyss. You can do top jacks in a 1590B with Fuzz Dog PCBs but there is a lot of wire to run. I wired the jack sleeves together and ran a separate ground wire for audio and DC the end. You could wire all three together and do it in one but then you've got a dance to get everything into place. Not the headache I ordered. The PPCB Abyss completes a scary shit themed modulation set with the Circulator

Showcase First build. Treble booster

Post image

I bought two boards recently; one for a silicon transistor treble booster and one for a king of tone. Just slapped the treble booster together in about two hours. It works! Since it's late, I tested it at super low volume, but it definitely works. Can't wait to get the king of tone clone together! I used Aion PCBs and parts from Stomp Box Parts. Everything went together smoothly.

Help wanted Easy kits for mini-pedal enclosure

Hi everyone, I have this unused enclosure that was originally from a broken AliExpress mini-pedal. I'm looking for a kit that could fit, with 3 pots or 2 pots and a switch, but I didn't find anything. Do you guys know any? I'm in Europe so my shopping possibilities are pretty limited and I usually buy from Musikding. I'm also open to different suggestions on what to build in it. Thanks for your help!

Edit: the enclosure is 9.2 cm long, 4.1 cm wide, 3.4 cm tall.

Help wanted Vox V810 Valvetone Overdrive Issues

Thumbnail

I have an old Vox V810 Valvetone Overdrive that crapped out on me a while ago. I don't really know much about electronics, but after opening it up and looking inside, I realized that the previous owner had done a footswitch replacement and I assume that it was not done in the best way.

The pedal currently turns on and off just fine, but when it's on, it defaults to a really high gain setting and the volume knob doesn't change anything past 30% (exponential fall off below that point), the tone knob doesn't do anything unless it's at 0% (where it just cuts off any noise) and the gain knob when past 50% starts making a squealing noise (if the other knobs are high).

The previous modder had put new wires going from the input / output jacks to the replacement footswitch, but also had a separate cable that was connected to the footswitch and then taped off (had no other connection point). I since clipped this wire off as it seemed to serve no purpose (it made no difference).

I'm lost; AI has been pretty unhelpful in actually fixing this pedal. I love this thing and would hate to have to toss it. I'm hoping it's just a simple fix. Anyone have some advice?

Other How realistic will it be to turn making pedals into a decent side gig?

I’ve always loved tinkering with electronics and have a great passion for guitar playing and I’m thinking about turning diy pedals into a side gig to supplement my part time job. Nothing too ambitious, probably 100-200 dollars a week is my goal.

Discussion Replace my dirt pedals with BD2 + OD3 + GE7 and then go DIY fuzz

Lots and lots of overdrive and distortion pedals around but I’m thinking of DIY fuzz up front followed by BD2 or clone + OD3 and then GE7 or other eq into the amp. I think this will be flexible for lots of overdrive and heavy drive sounds.

Any thoughts or anyone else doing this?

Help wanted i need help with dc plug / adapter !!!

hi!!!, first of all my native language isnt english :b... i came here seeking for the infinte knowledge of the pedal wizards..

recently i started with this project of making my first fuzz face pedal and i buy this generic daisy chain cable from internet, when i plug it to the adapter the electric current doesnt reach the pedal, i saw a few videos and images and the ac/dc adaptor they are using is only a plug cable, and i think is a bit thicker than mine but i dont know if that is the problem, i am not that worried because it was a very cheap buying but iam really hoping to make it work...

i buyed the universal ac/dc adapter long ago because i only have a distortion pedal

what are your takes on this?

should i buy a cheap power supply instead, now that i am making my pedalboard?

thank you for reading!!

Help wanted Would a Rat with green russian tonestack and clean blend do for a good bass pedal?

Title. Made my first pedal a few days ago and wanted to try more. Thought making a distortion for my sister's bass was not only a good project, but a good gift as well. Landed on the rat for the versatility, but it's got the issue of the low-end cut, which for bass, not great. Thought about using a green russian style tonestack instead of the traditional rat filter but was worried about cutting mids as well. Ended up thinking of adding a clean blend to fix the issue with the mids, but not sure if all of this would even work.

Anyone have any help or opinions?

Showcase Breadboarded a custom DIY Boss DS-1 circuit.

Hey everyone! Working on a custom version of the classic DS-1. Instead of building a stock clone, I wanted to make my own version of it, trying to improve the design and add a variety of mods. This is the first version consisting of the core stages:
1. Input Buffer (Re-designed for larger input impedance)
2. Transistor Booster (with a custom "Booster" knob, the one on the right)
3. Op-Amp Gain Stage (with the original "Distortion" knob, the one on the left)
4. Clipping Stage (for now close to the original)

Testing it stage-by-stage with an oscilloscope really highlighted how much tone shaping happens before the clipping diodes even see the signal.
Do you own any stock DS-1, or maybe have built your own? For Part 2, I'm planning to tackle the tone stack and custom EQ shaping, adding a bunch of other custom mods in the process. If anyone is interested in the full block-by-block breakdown and sound tests, I documented the whole build here: https://youtu.be/FQ95H8xLnsk

Other GuitarML FunBox build

Post image
29 Upvotes

I’ve just finished this quite exciting build - a FunBox designed by Keith at GuitarML. It’s built around the Daisy Seed and there’s a variety of patches available. It’s the first pedal I’ve built that wasn’t from a kit - obviously no design work from me, but I ordered the PCB and sourced all the parts.

I haven’t painted this one because the holes for the USB and the dip switches ended up a bit of a hatchet job, so I’m treating this one as a first attempt but will likely build another.

Help wanted Help with checking my pcb and schhematics

*update i have reflowed all solder joints and tried audioprobing again and i get no signal after the 1st cap (so in the beginning of everything) it is the a 100nf cap on the second row, furthest to the right. i have it circled in the drive
Is there a way to audioprobe or follow the signal in a way after that to se if any other parts is faulty? Or is the design wrong in that point??

Hi, so i might be having some problems

so i have tried to make (and order) my first pcb that i made for a pedal i made on prototypeboard before. I used EasyEDA and auto routing since i have no experiance in how to trace and "get it right"
It is nothing groundbreaking, its a rat pedal with the bb mod and a clean blend upfront. It is made for the bassist in my band.

I have previously made it (with success) on prototypeboard with information from effectslayouts.blogspot.com
it is the split n blend and ProCo RAT ('86 version). Schematics for the rat is from the "rat project" and R12 is omitted in the version i went by.
The bb mod is from marcuseffects.wordpress.com

I have tried audioprobing the pcb but it is clear that i made some bad solder joints in the start of the signalchain so i will reflow the components but is there anyone that has some time to check the schematic i made and if possible the gerber so that it is nothing wrong with that (other than that i need to practice and improve in tracing and layout at least).

in the schematic picture i have put in the other schematics i used to make it into a bigger one with the whole circuit.
A link to my drive with all the files and stuff i have of this project

Showcase Metal Zone Mods

A while ago I did the Diezel mods to a Metal Zone. I thought it sounded good at the time but wasn't completely happy with it. Decided to remove both diodes and swap C33 for 4.7nf. Now it sounds awesome! It's tight and precise with lots of gain. I use a compressor in front of it and it's whisper quiet and only need the gain up less than halfway. The ribbon cable was rotten so I replaced that with individual wires, that was a chore but worth it. Do the Diezel mods but forget the diode/led and change C33 to something smaller. Sounds best with the amp EQ close to zero or direct to power amp.

Help wanted What is this sound? Synth adjacent

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So the parametric EQ on this early 80s Yamaha G50 is damn impressive, and it helps you dial in a whole array of toans. But there’s something about this Frequency knob sweep that is alluring to me, and feels like something more akin to an analog synth trick.

Something I’ve wanted to find in a pedal build for a long time now is the ability to replicate those kinds of sweeps, ideally with an expression roller, while incorporating some more of the spaceship’esque sounds of oscillation feedback via a delay.

What pedal out there can do both of these things in tandem? Seems like a niche need for someone looking to ultimately just do wild ‘Hyperspace’ shit with guitar feedback.
