Question Setting up a travel fund to receive gifts?

• Upvotes

Like many folks who’ve been nomadic for a while, I’m reluctant to receive physical gifts at holidays or birthdays - but regularly get asked by family and friends if there’s a way to fund my travel.

Yes, people could Venmo me or whatever, but ideally I’d like an option similar to Honeyfund (for weddings) that allows you to itemize what they could buy you (one night in this hotel in Bali, one dinner at this restaurant, one cooking class, etc). It would be a cute way to let people contribute specifics and feels less generic and tacky/more effective than just asking for a Venmo.

However, research yields very little on this front:
- Honeyfund: apparently going to set up something called Plumfund eventually, but not yet live
- Tiing: unable to collect USD gifts at the moment for some reason
- Hitchd: for weddings
- GoFundMe: can’t itemize the gift afaik (1 dinner, 1 class, etc)

Anyone else found something that works? I’m at the point of possibly just setting up a Honeyfund and pretending to be getting married lol

Question What if you could meet someone before you even arrive in the same country?

One thing I find fascinating about travel is how many potential connections never happen simply because of timingg

Imagine two strangers.

One lives in London. Another lives in New York,

Both are planning to spend November 12–18 in Barcelona

They might have similar interests, be attracted to each other, and even stay just minutes apart.

But they have absolutely no idea other person exists

Most dating apps focus on where you are today, not where both of you are going tomorrow

I have been working on TravelNeighbors, an early-stage platform built around this exact idea: connecting people through upcoming destinations and overlapping travell dates.

And I would love to hear from people who actually live this lifestyle.

Would knowing that someone interesting is heading to your next destination make you more likely to connect before arriving?

Or would you rather meet people spontaneously once you get there?

I am particularly curious about how much of your upcoming itinerary you would feel comfortable sharing with potential matches.

For transparency, this is something I am building, not just an abstract idea.

Question Hobbies in a base

For those of you who still want to participate in your hobbies, but are only staying in a place for 4 to 6 weeks. How do you go about doing this? Is it easy to find a gym for one month or so?

What if you played tennis or paddle? Are you able to find club memberships that are just on a monthly basis that are easy to join?

I’m curious how other people sort of manage keeping up with hobbies when they’re not on vacation mode where you might be doing a lot of touristy activities every day or something.

Lifestyle Anyone ever moved somewhere less convenient just to slow down?

I've been running an ecommerce store while moving every few months, and I'm pretty burned out. Spent time in Lisbon and Mexico City, but ended up working more than actually enjoying either place. Thinking about settling somewhere quieter for a year, maybe Eastern Europe or South America. Just need decent internet, a basic gym, good food, and fewer distractions. Not really looking for a digital nomad hotspot. I just want to work less and have a normal routine again.
Has anyone tried moving somewhere slower on purpose? Did it actually help, or did you just get bored?

Question How touristy is Granada?

I'm in Rome and can't deal with more tourist shit. Yes I know how to avoid it and yes I do but I just don't want to be anywhere near it.

Simultaneously some friends have suggested visiting Granada while im still in Europe. Obviously the city has the Alhambra which obviously draws tourists. I've spent a fair amount of time in Sevilla. I speak Spanish.

How touristy/"Disney-fied" is Granada? Is it a real city or is it really tourist geared nowadays? Thanks

Question Any professional writers / comms people in the house?

Hi all - looking to network with other full-time travelers in my field. I focus on research comms for science orgs and tech companies (writing/editing/team leadership).

I traveled for ~5 years (currently back in the homeland working towards a master's degree), but never met anyone else who fully financially supports his/her self through their comms work while moseying around abroad.

If there are any others out there, I'd love to put a group chat together so we can trade notes/experiences and stay connected. Drop a comment with your general line of work if this sounds like you and we can swap portfolios. :)

Visas Thailand cut visa-free stays to 30 days and DTV now has to be applied for from your home country (official sources inside)

I check official immigration pages for 25 countries every week. Here's what changed recently:

- **Thailand:** since 15 Sep 2026, the visa exemption is 30 days (was 60), "for tourism purposes only." If you're already there, you keep what's stamped. Since 31 Aug, DTV applicants must apply from their country of nationality or permanent residence, with proof of residence and a criminal record certificate. Funds (THB 500k), 5-year validity and 180 days/entry are unchanged. Source: Thai Government PR Dept (thailand.prd.go.th) and the Royal Thai Embassy London.
- **Georgia:** the Law on Labour Migration now explicitly exempts work for a foreign employer/client related to their activities outside Georgia. There's also a new C5 remote-worker e-visa (5-year multiple entry, 1-year stay, USD 300), but the list of eligible nationalities hasn't been published that I could find.
- **Malaysia:** the Budget 2027 speech says DE Rantau holders at the 2-year cap will be allowed to stay on, subject to criteria that aren't out yet.
- **Barbados:** the Welcome Stamp is only approved through 31 Dec 2026, no extension yet.

Not legal advice, and corrections welcome if anyone has seen newer

Question Heading to Sicily next week and looking for a quiet seaside base outside Palermo (Trapani, Marsala, or other tips?)

Hi everyone,

I’m landing in Palermo next week and will be working remotely from Sicily for a while. I’m coming mainly for the sunshine, since I tend to be more motivated and focused when the weather is good.

I might stop by Beet Community in Palermo, but I don’t plan to stay in the city long-term. Personally, I work best in calmer surroundings, so I’m looking for a smaller town on the western coast. As a bonus, I enjoy the more local feel that quieter places often have.

What I’m looking for:

  • Accommodation with a sea view (ideally suited for working: reliable Wi-Fi, a proper desk, and a coffee machine, because I won’t survive without coffee) 😄
  • Daily essentials within walking distance (supermarket, cafés, restaurants)
  • Nice to have, but not essential: a coworking space or a meetup scene nearby

My questions:

  1. Trapani and Marsala are currently on my shortlist. Has anyone worked from either of them? I’d love to hear how the daily life and overall vibe were for you.
  2. Are there other towns you’d recommend that I might not have considered? Hidden gems are very welcome.
  3. If you know of specific apartments or stays with a good view and a solid work setup, I’d be grateful for any recommendations.

Also, if anyone happens to be in the area, I’d be happy to meet for a coffee. I’m always glad to meet new people.

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate any tips!

Question Health/workout focused DN local: Jan/Feb/March

Looking for location ideas for January through March, with the goal of working out and getting healthy. I work 9-5 EST hours, including video meetings, so need solid internet and will not work overnight hours (past 11pm or before 6am). In my 30s, not a big drinker or late night party person, prefer warm weather (above 60F), must be safe for a woman.

Considering so far: San Diego, Miami Beach/Ft Lauderdale (for the warm weather/beach but party vibe concerns me), Puerto Rico (thought Old SJ was cute but unsure if too small, could do a single month for example), Savannah GA, Mexico City (a bit worried about elevation) or Merida MX. Budget: ideally not above $5K/mo all-in.

Recommendations for other cities or co-live/work places in the cities I mentioned? Would of course love something like Thailand's live/exercise reputation but cannot handle the time change for that, and as far as I can tell I don't have the budget for the Caribbean islands' fancy workout spots.

My work laptop doesn't let me download programs so is there a way to remote into it through something plugged into a usb port or something? I plan on leaving the computer at a family member's house in the US and hopefully find a way to remote into it from Mexico.

Question Those of you who DN'd in Cape Town; talk to me about the best areas to stay, costs, food, safety etc. Here's what I've found so far ....

Sea Point and the Kloof Street area both look good to me so far, I want somewhere easy to walk around and they seem to tick that box

Ubers too, by European capital city standards, seem to be about 70% cheaper?

On safety:

  • Which areas did locals tell you to avoid completely? I hear CBD is dodgy as fuck at night

  • Do you walk home at night, or do you take an Uber for even short distances?

For working from there:

  • How reliable is WiFi in rentals, and what speeds do you get?
  • Is there a nomad community or regular meetups?

On costs:

  • What do you pay monthly for a decent one-bedroom in each area?

  • What does a normal week of groceries, coffee and eating out run?

  • How much did a local SIM with data add up to?

Is there a better area for walking to everything that I haven't heard of?

Which one would you pick, and why?

TLDR:

Safety and easy to walk around, pretty areas are top of my list for Cape Town suggestions you might have

Thanks

Question Working in South Africa requirements (UK national, UK company)

Hi all,

I would be grateful for help to work through some bureaucracy.

I (UK national) work in UK for a large UK company. I wish to work in South Africa for some time, as my wife would like to visit relatives. I would be doing exactly the same job as currently - just remotely from SA.

My company allows staff to work abroad for a limit number of days (20 per year), provided I can demonstrate that I have the right to work in that country. However, HR have rejected the idea that I can work there under the SA visitor and business visa because it allows for 'business purposes' (i.e. conferences, meetings etc), which I will not be doing.

My understanding is that there is nothing in SA's visitor's visa that prevents working for a UK company remotely. The fact that it allows visits for business purposes does not mean that it can only be used for business purposes. I recall a post on a forum that was adamant about this point - but I can no longer find it.

One alternative option is the remote worker ('digital nomad') visa. This appears to allow me to work in SA for longer than 90 days and although I don't act plan to do so, would presumably be granted in principle and accepted by my employer. However, I am concerned that the reported low take-up rate suggests it is difficult to obtain / not suitable. Specifically, it appears that I need to prove that I am in good health and that I don't have specific diseases, including leprosy. I've done a fair number of blood tests in my life, and don't recall this being on my results. Additionally, it looks like this could cost around £300 -£400 all in all (medical checks, police checks, vfs fee etc).

All the above bureaucracy seems to stem from the fact that SA could not care less if visitors work their remotely, providing they are not taking a job from an SA national. As such, they've never found the need to clarify this point. Unfortunately, all the information I can find online (in particular AI summaries) seems to give negative answers based on the assumption that the scenario is about working for an SA-based company/office.

So, my questions are:

- Am I right in the above summary? If so, is there anywhere official that states that travellers on a visitors visa can continue to work for their home country company?

- Has anyone had any experience of completing the digital nomad visa's medical checks?

- Do you have any other suggestions on how I can navigate this?

Thanks for any help

Lifestyle Semi-nomad (Thailand / Vietnam / Netherlands) thinking of getting a mini labradoodle. Realistic or a bad idea?

Hi all,

I’d love some honest input from people who travel or live abroad with a dog.

My situation:

- I’m Dutch, based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I work for myself remotely, so my days are flexible.

- Big introvert, love doing the simple things in life, and like to be active outside.

- I spend longer periods in Chiang Mai, other places in Thailand and the Netherlands. Usually I plan trips 1-2 months ahead.

- Some friends lives in Chiang Mai and could look after the dog when needed.

- I’m looking at a mini multigen Australian Labradoodle (adult around 7–10 kg) from a breeder in Australia. It would be exported to Thailand at 16 weeks.

- I was diagnosed with autism at a young age, and part of the plan is to train the dog as an assistance dog with a certified trainer in Thailand. That would hopefully allow cabin travel on airlines like KLM.

What I’m unsure about:

- How much does a dog really limit spontaneous travel within Asia and to Europe, once all paperwork (chip, rabies, titre test) is in place?

- Has anyone flown a 7–10 kg dog in the hold within Southeast Asia? Which airlines did you use, and how did it go?

How do doodles handle the Thai heat? Is grooming manageable?

- For people who owner-trained or trainer-trained an assistance dog: how realistic is it to get a puppy to that level?

- Everyone around me advises against it. For those who did it anyway, do you regret it, or did it make your life better?

I know it's a commitment, and that having a dog will limit some spontaneity, but in the end, I'd say the benefits of having a dog far outweigh the two or three downsides you might experience in a year, right?

I keep going back and forth on this. If you have a dog and it made your life better, I’d love to hear why. What did it actually change for you day to day? I’m hoping a few real stories will help me stop overthinking and make a decision, whichever way it goes.

Question Genki insurance….

My husband and I want to sign up for Genki health insurance, but so far, we’ve had to wait exactly 7 business days per question to get a response from their support team.

And I mean, I’ll ask just one question, they’ll tell me they need to look into it, and then I won’t hear back for 7 business days. I asked another question, and we’re now on day 6 of waiting for a response.

Two weeks. Two questions.

I’m worried that filing claims will take even longer if their customer support is already this slow.
Has anyone else had this experience with Genki?

We are hoping once we are paying customers their response time will be better but we wanted to sign up two weeks ago and they are delaying their own process.
