Did a fun experiment: Debian with all of my apps on Arch (Distrobox)

I kinda couldn't get this idea out of my head ever since I first tried Distrobox:

What if I could build a system that consists of a Debian Stable base and the latest versions of all of my apps from Arch?

The idea here is to have a fairly minimal, super boring Debian install - with only the stuff that's better left on the host (such as the DE, services, background apps etc.) - and all regular apps sitting in an Arch container on Distrobox instead.

Note: Loads of people obviously use Distrobox for individual (GUI) apps from another distro, but I wanted to take it a step further and see how things work out if you run virtually all apps in the container.

So, I did this little experiment in a VM and replicated a good part of my actual system. Here is what I did:

  1. Set up a minimal install of Debian with no DE
  2. Installed a bare bones Xfce environment (pretty much only the DE itself and some basic system tools + apps that need to constantly run in the background)
  3. Set up Distrobox with an Arch container
  4. Then continued to install all of my apps in the container, exporting them to the Debian host.

The result is pretty amazing: all the apps I tested - including some pretty complex stuff like Gnome Boxes (QEMU) - worked just fine and behaved exactly the same as if I had them installed on the Debian host. Not sure why some people keep saying Distrobox isn't that good for GUI apps... And there is the added benefit of having my apps in a container, so I can basically just copy that to a fresh install and everything will be magically there without setting it up first.

Honestly, I personally don't really need bleeding edge apps, so this was more of a fun experiment, but Distrobox is just so impressive :). And I think this could actually be usable if you have a use case for it, because the friction is surprisingly low from what I've seen.

In case anybody daily-drives something like this, please share your experience.

Debian Stable Question Is there a way to opt-in to telemetry on Debian?

I have been using Debian for a couple months now. I switched to Debian because of all of Microsoft's telemetry with Windows. I'm the type of person who is perfectly fine with telemetry, as long as there is a way to turn it off. I tend to turn on telemetry for programs I like so I can help the developers, but if there's no way to turn it off, I find an alternative, even if I love the application. My question is, is there a way to turn on telemetry? I would love to support the Debian developers, but I can't find a way. If there's not a way, they need to make one lol because I don't have the money to donate, but I want to support.

General Debian Question Debian installer not working

Hi, I’m having a problem installing Debian 13. Whenever I select either Graphical Install or Install, the screen goes black and nothing else happens.

I’ve installed Linux many times before, but this is the first time I’ve encountered this issue. I’m using an NVIDIA GPU for the first time, so I suspect it might be related to the graphics card or its drivers.

Has anyone experienced this issue or knows how to fix it?

Debian Sid Question Cinnamon being pulled on system update

[ SOLVED ]

Hello... Suddenly I was going to update my system (mostly Niri with quickshell) on Sid and now it wants to install all from Cinnamon?

Trying to debug why is this happening, I found might be due to gir1.2-glib-2.0...? I don't think it would, but I would like if someone more experienced and knowladge could help me? I'm using apt update && apt full-upgrade (even apt upgrade pulls cinnamon)

Thanks in advance.

Edit: It seems my flatpak for some reason wanted to grab some portal I already have installed and does going into gdm3 and thus some x-session and thus bringing all Cinnamon together...

Using ```apt -o APT::Install-Recommends=false full-upgrade``` bring a much smoll and compact update to my system, actually just the dependencies was not installed (which was showing in the normal apt full-upgrade)

General Debian Question Strategy to purge old and unused kernels automatically

Hello,

What is the proper/official way to make sure old and automatically installed kernels are purged from /boot ?

I manage a lot of laptops, with unattended-upgraded enabled to install all upgrades and purge unused kernels:

// Remove unused automatically installed kernel-related packages
// (kernel images, kernel headers and kernel version locked tools).
Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Kernel-Packages "true";

// Remove any new unused dependencies after the upgrade has finished.
Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-New-Unused-Dependencies "true";

Yet, a lot of computers have their /boot full (size is 2 GB), so new kernels won't install. apt autoremove removes old kernels, unless they have been installed manually, of course.

I saw an additional unattended-upgrade option "Remove-Unused-Dependencies", but I don't think it would help.

I would like to avoid having to constantly ask users to run the apt autoremove command. I'm about to add a cron or systemd timer to run apt autoremove --yes. How risky/bad is it?

In the end, all I need is up-to-date computers.

PHP 8.2.35 CVS update from Sury Repo for debian 12 users

Debian 12 repo aren't still update for CVE-2026-109619 and CVE-2026-109618

UPDATE : It's been updated @ 16:09 UTC - Use Debian repo first....
You can still use Sury Repo to get 8.4 or 8.5

There's a method to use Sury Repo
# Install Sury repo

sudo apt install -y apt-transport-https ca-certificates lsb-release curl
sudo curl -sSLo /usr/share/keyrings/deb.sury.org-php.gpg https://packages.sury.org/php/apt.gpg
echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/deb.sury.org-php.gpg] https://packages.sury.org/php/ $(lsb_release -sc) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/sury-php.list

# Update package list

sudo apt-get update

# Install all 8.2 upgrade (but it'll also install 8.4 and 8.5, and propose you to keep php.ini or install new one, make a copy of your php.ini is better)

apt-get install --only-upgrade php8.2*

# set 8.2 for php cli

sudo update-alternatives --set php /usr/bin/php8.2

# Restart apache (it stays on 8.2)

service apache2 restart

if you want to set apache on 8.4, but update the php.ini before :)

sudo a2dismod php8.2
sudo a2enmod php8.4

New to Debian

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Just jumped into pure Debian for the first time and installed Debian 13 LXQt on my 12-year-old laptop for daily use. Since deb.debian.org is blocked in my country, I've been using the limda and cloudfront mirrors to handle updates and package installs, and they work great.

The laptop has an old Nvidia card, but I’m just sticking with the integrated Intel HD graphics since I don't game on it anyway. Wi-Fi worked right out of the box too.

So far, I’m really enjoying Debian 😄

General Debian Question What do I do? I can't even boot in live version, because of those errors.

Post image
4 Upvotes

Those errors appear on mint, debian and LMDE as well, I haven't tested in others distros. I tried look this shit up, but there's too little info on that. I heard ventoy might cause some errors, but I have tried it medicat, ventoy and by rufus, none of them changed the output. My theory is that mobo (gigabyte b650 gaming x ax v2) might be the problem, or GPU (rtx 4060ti). Help me i dunno what to do.

So the reader is detected but nothing but my ssd shows with lsblk. I have tried loading the module via modprobe but no luck it still won't detect my sd card.
