It'll take 20 mins. Even if you just stick it up with the cables trailing for now. It's better than no dashcam.

This is what I did just to get it up. Was putting it off. Just got it stuck up and used the cigarette lighter port it came with. Next day almost got hit by a guy flying through a red light
I got the fuse box cable and the rear to do now. Need to get on it and run that rear long cable
7
u/wytewydow 13h ago
Once I finally got one, it changed how I feel behind the wheel immediately. I've never been a scared driver, but seems that everytime I go to the city, someone blows a red light, or some other dumb shit. Peace of mind is amazing.
4
u/MajorFox2720 12h ago
When I was younger, my mom paused a really long time at a green light. The four of us looked at her, and right as my oldest sibling asked what was she doing, this big lifted pickup rig blew through the light 20 mph over the speed limit.
Mind you, this was a tiny one light town of less than 2000 people. Red light runners are everywhere. I have always paused and looked both ways before going at green lights ever since.

I'm glad our new Suburban records 360° but I really need to get our second car hooked up with a cam in the front and back.

u/NervousWorld323 12h ago
Saved me a huge repair bill last april. Guy intentionally sideswiped me with a 26' straight truck. Highway patrol watched the video and cited him and their insurance covered my repairs. This is the second time a dashcam has saved me a ton of money. Other time happened a few years ago when a motorcycle rear ended me and screwed up my tailgate/bumper. Highly recommend getting one that has both front / rear cameras.
3
u/CeeMomster 11h ago
You really should.
I finally got around to installing mine, not a day later I was pulled over for a ticket that my dash cam clearly showed I wasn’t in violation of.
Saved my ass from a “cop said / driver said” situation that I would’ve lost just because “they were a cop”
3
u/WaitWutRWeTalkinBout 10h ago
Just another voice to tell you to do it now. Did it for my wife, and literally the day after, someone sideswiped her and it was caught on the dashcam
2
u/DiegesisThesis 5h ago
Also a good idea to check up on it regularly. I've had a dash cam for years but never needed to use it. I saw someone crash in front of me one day and went to go look at the footage and realized the SD card was corrupted or something and it hadn't even been recording for like 6 months. Luckily nothing happened.

My front and rear-facing ones have been fantastic.
What's even better is that my rear-facing one isn't hard to see, so I'm one of the few SUVs in my community that haven't had their vehicle smashed in during the recent rash of break-ins over the past three months. The people who are parked in my immediate vicinity are also safe, though they have been confused as to why.

OP, just a tip for stitching two videos together!
It can be tough to get them aligned to the millisecond, so I usually mute one of them, keep the audio from the other, then collage. The audio will be close enough when you have them this closely aligned.
Prevents that echoing you hear in the video.

Usually the argument for the rear driver being at fault after getting brake checked is that they should've put themselves far enough away so that even if the car in front slams on their brakes for whatever reason, they have enough room to react and slow down.
The smartest play when dealing with crazy people like that is to get as far away from them as possible. As soon as they passed the driver, the driver should've slowed down.
This video evidence however is pretty egregious. I'm sure that morons insurance will try and fight it, but since the driver didn't seem to act in a reckless or spiteful manner I think this insurance case will relatively easy to win. A total PITA no doubt, but I wouldn't worry too much. Plus, brake checking like that can count as reckless driving, if they get officially charged for that I imagine that will help your case with insurance.

u/Biochembob35 14h ago

That's the thing... even if the brake-checking driver is found at fault, good luck getting any money out of them. Cam cars insurance will eventually give up, pay the claim themselves, and then end up raising cam cars rates because of it. Meanwhile brake check car is back out on the highway brake checking other folks who are not so lucky to have a dashcam.

u/Hammon_Rye 6h ago
Maybe terminology differs where you are but that is not an emergency lane.
It is just the shoulder of the road.
They literally had to drive part way off the road to pass on the left. But I agree the video clearly shows the passing idiot at fault.

u/Equal-Difference4520 9h ago

tempting as that is (or to slam down on the accelerator). The best course of action is to fall out of the vehicle and scream, "Don't touch me till my lawyer gets here!" The driver seems to have a pretty solid case since the ding-dong in the car not only sideswiped them while passing on the shoulder but also brake-checked them. If the driver hadn't done anything malicious before the recorded event. I'd say they have a better-than-normal chance of getting some pain & suffering compensation. On the other hand, stomping the ding-dong into a mud hole could dramatically lower their chances.

3
u/Pillslanger 11h ago
No reputable insurance is going to fight this. There’s no time to react and the other driver even appears to be trying to commit insurance fraud.
99 times in 100 rear end loss is going to be paid by car in back. These are some of the best times though for a dash cam. That and a lane change dispute.
I only ever paid out once on a rear-end collision. Our driver was in the HOV decided he didn’t want to anymore and exited the HOV driving over cones and was doing 50 in a 75. Said he didn’t even see the claimant driver who said “this old dude just cut me off.”

It's hard to tell if the Accord hit the cammer or if the cammer just jerked the wheel to the right when they passed. I think it's going to swing in OP's direction even more if they made contact during the pass, right?
22
u/Disillusionification 13h ago
It's irrelevant, really. The truck had already begun overtaking when the sedan pulled out to do the same behind him. The sedan should have slowed then to allow for the truck to complete his maneuver. Instead they decided to do an illegal overtake.
Anybody looking at this video in judgement is going to come to the conclusion the sedan is at fault.
→ More replies (3)7
u/MagicHarmony 10h ago
Ya, the bigger issue is you clearly see the Sedan slamming their breaks to purposely get hit, there was no reason for the Sedan to stop in the way it did, if the Sedan had been accelerating then when they got hit they would have moved but instead they stood their like a rock.

Tbh, it could as easily be that the other car was speeding for a gap that was obviously closing with the truck making what looked like a pretty normal merge into lane. We don't really have enough of a lead up to know, but given how the car acted, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd gunned it when they saw the indicator and made a problem from what might have been a reasonable gap to merge into.

I'm willing to bet the truck was signaling and moving into the lane first. The accord was driving recklessly and had just moved into right and moving back into left around the other car based on their right signal still blinking.
9

u/zeptillian 8h ago
Exactly. You have to look at the first frame to see that the car in back was already in the middle of a lane change and looked to be further along in that process which means they probably changed lanes first.
My guess is that they were specifically trying to go around OP when OP cut them off.
The fact that this video starts so abruptly in the middle of the action suggests that OP knows they fucked up too and intentionally did not upload that part of the video.

u/Ragnar-Wave9002 12h ago
What, not waiting for room to change lanes is good driving?
Here's a hot take. both drivers are idiots.
The car was driving fast and probably passing on the right. The truck driver either saw this and change lanes intentionally to cut this guy off or was oblivious to them driving fast. In both cases, this was 100% preventable by the truck. If the truck driver did not see this guy coming, that is also a sign of a bad driver.
The difference between me and that truck driver is that i would not have had to stop, get an accident report, deal with insurance and fix my truck. I'd be at Wal Mart by now.

13
u/GreenvsBlue 10h ago

I disagree, i think it was road rage. OP kinda cut him off ngl, probably an honest mistake. A normal person would slow down and go about their drive safely. But this driver went off roading to get ahead, then slammed his brakes. Je was road raging. People like that make us all unsafe on the road.
Edit: OP didn't even cut him off after rewatching, this dude was just speeding and trying to get ahead then raged when he encountered other drivers on the road. Insanity.
7
u/SonOfMcGee 10h ago
Yeah I had to rewatch too.
The cam car and speeding car start changing lanes at the same time.
We’ve all been in situations where we and the car in front of us both decide to get in the passing lane at the same time and the front car isn’t accelerating or passing as fast as we would like to. Tough shit. We ease off the pedal and just go as fast as the front car allows. They didn’t “cut us off”.
2
u/_SYRIAN_ 10h ago
I feel like road rage is getting worse. A similar thing happened to me the other day. I was in the right lane, switching to the middle. I switched lanes and the car on the left lane started switching to the middle lane. He was slightly ahead of me and i assume i was in his blind spot. I didn't speed up and jump ahead and brake check him like an insane person. I just went back to the right lane, not even honking. The guy probably never even knew we came close to a collision 😂 honest mistakes happen, and in the case of this video the road rager is completely at fault for everything.

even without a dashcam or legal consequences, lying to a cop is still a good way to ruin your day.
when i was rear-ended at a bus stop in 2018, the lady who hit me claimed her brakes had failed when the cop arrived. she then said she needed to get going because she was late taking her son to daycare so she could go to work.
cop responded "you just told me that car has no brakes, it's not going anywhere except on the back of a tow truck."
5
u/Impressive-Tutor-482 9h ago
I was with a bunch of the boys, back when young enough to have that be a thing, and we were on a small road trip. The guy who was driving kept yanking his e-brake, calling it catching second. The e-brake barely worked, until it did. We were going 45 mph on a straight stretch of back road and sudden the car was spinning across a ditch and into a field.
Police arrived about the time we had pushed it across the field and onto a driveway. The driver wouldn't admit to making an error so we had to rollback the car across the county line while the deputy followed us because he knew what we were about lol
3
u/PoorMinorities 6h ago
It’s not about lying to the police. I don’t get where this overcorrection came from.
You don’t inform the other party you have a dash cam because then they can try and tailor their story as best they can to fit the narrative and minimize their fault and it makes it harder for them to amend their story without outright trying to contradict their original statement. You let them tell the police what happened, you tell the police what happened and “I also have a dashcam”. It makes it harder for them to claim no fault based on their story or get away with insurance fraud when they claim one thing and the video shows nothing of the sort.

Yup.
The police don't do anything about it. You are not found to be more or less at fault when your account conflicts with dash cam footage. But if it's the litigious sort their credibility is destroyed.
The dash cam footage is for the police officer who handles the accident report, and your insurance company. Keep your mouth shut everyone else.
4
u/whitethunder9 9h ago
Yeah, Reddit doesn't seem to understand this. There is the exact letter of the law, but judges get a decent amount of leeway in situations like this. If you show up and behave yourself and show that not only did you document things well, but the other person straight up lied to the cops, the judge will be influenced. It's no guarantee but it's gonna help you.

police do this, when they don't otherwise have concrete evidence to put it all away and move on with their lives. They don't do it for fun, typically.
OPs got an open and shut case. tell everyone about it, the dickhead becomes a felon and gets a little jail time and OP gets everything paid for and could get damages with a law suit easily if they wanted.
3
u/Glittering_Ride842 12h ago
I've seen plenty of interrogation videos where police presented their evidence because they were so confident it would be a slam dunk only for the suspect to come up with a plausible story that cast doubt on their evidence and make the case much harder than it needed to me.
In this case, the driver could say "Oh I was having a medical emergency", or "Something fell in the footwell of the car". And now you have to disprove a story that sort of fits your evidence. Rather than locking them into a story that you can easily disprove with your evidence.
2

a medical emergency, or something rolling around in the footwell is a story they can tell their insurance company to ask for pity moving forward. And in theory it might help their case fighting the felony I think they probably deserve.
It would not change the blame for insurance purposes, which is the only piece that affects OP directly.
So... yes... if you want more than to be justified financially, or to gain damages you feel you deserve and you just want to know this person suffers, yes, you could calculate the most opportune time to release the video to hopefully get them more jailtime or make their own insurance cost more for longer... but that's all just spite at that point. I guess I don't think like that.
I also would never in a million years believe either of those excuses you mention could possibly justify what I am seeing in that video. If you are late, don't slam on your brakes to stop. If you are having trouble driving, don't race car pass cars like your playing GTA VI already....

For what? The evidence is the video lol. Nothing different will come of this whether he says "I have a dashcam", or if you let the other person tell s story and then say "I have a dash cam"

To be fair... It's really satisfying to have a gotcha for someone trying to scam your insurance. Someone put a claim against my insurance saying that I hit their car in a street parking spot. I couldn't think of a way to prove them wrong at first and I looked at the pictures they submitted and it sure looked like I was pushing against their car. Then I caught the time they said they parked and left and pulled my parking receipt. I was parked an hour before they arrived and left two hours after they left. The insurance adjuster actually laughed when I sent her the receipt

It would be nice to see the video 15 seconds before the start. This is not OP’s fault but where the video starts is a little sus

What's even more crazy is that the video is cut to start while the other car was uvertaking and the cam car also started changing lanes. Context was cut out ...

Yeah, the dashcamer very clearly cut them off lol. Obviously the other car is in the wrong, but based on how fast OP was going at the start compared to the cars around him it looks like he sped up to get in front of the black car and road rage.

The video starts with both vehicles in the right lane, changing lanes. Because the car wants to go faster doesn't give him the right to pass the truck on the shoulder then brake check.

I don’t think these type of people would change their knee-jerk reactions for anything mate

I just read through this comment thread, nobody is claiming what you said here. They are saying both are wrong, and even admit that it is on different levels.
Pointing out the dashcammer is wrong, is not the same as saying the car was right about anything. Sometimes, both parties are wrong.

"The other car was obviously wrong"
Two wrongs don't make a right. There was clearly something before this video. I never said it gave him any right to cause an accident.

Nah, the car (who is a piece of shit) was already in the left driving lane, almost fully. Look closely.
The truck (who is a piece of shit), sped up and changed into a lane that wasn't his.
The truck then sees the car is there and stops merging, barely in the left driving lane. You can see where the truck realizes he cut someone off (edit: Truck begins braking heavily with the car behind or next to him) and stays in the middle of the road / too close to right lane traffic. Something fishy.
(Edit: the car is giving the truck a taste of his own medicine, for better or for worse.)

Courts routinely rule that speeding forefiets right of way because other cars cannot reasonably anticipate such a fast approach. Cam car is already going faster than traffic.
My assumption based on what the video shows is that the speeding car was likely in the right lane when OP checked for clearance in the left lane so OP initiated a gradual lane change. The speeding car simultaneously initiated a much more aggressive lane change while speeding and forcing their way next to OP.

Looks like OP started changing lanes in anticipation of the slower traffic ahead at the same time the other car tried to pull out and past him. It's still in the wrong because there's no space for it to safely move into the next lane, but OP needs the situational awareness to see it happening too.

And for some reason cam truck slowed down and refused to actually pass the person they were supposedly passing. Seems like a couple brake checkers ran into each other

A. Honda was moving faster than the lane would permit B. Had plenty of time to slow down but chose to speed up and overtake on the shoulder

So cam driver cut off another driver. Then, when thenother driver went around them, the cam driver failed to maintain a safe following distance. Both drivers are idiots. But cam driver started it.

Some people just want everyone else to be as miserable as they are. If they're having a shitty life/day then now you deserve to too.

Show the rest of it. This looks like OP and the car were jockeying for that outside lane, I’d sure like to see what led up to this. Bet there’s some aggressive driving on OP’s part with that other car before this collision. Hard to play the victim when you were a willing participant.

Yeah. Honda is a jackass and insane, but OP is no virgin Mary. The conveniently cropped start is extremely strange

The clip starts with the truck straddling both lanes. Am I the only one seeing that the truck merged into the car. The car initially breaked hard, then in a fit of unlawful roadrage tries to continue as if they hadn't already braked for the truck and then tried to inconvenience the truck by brake checking. Two idiots with a ego problem. The car is definitely worse though. Either needed to lean on the horn and keep the lane, or brake and accommodate the visually impaired.

u/fingerpaintx 13h ago
If you watch the rear cam the other car changes lanes at the same time but attempts to rapidly speed up to overtake the truck.

u/Mountain-House3287 11h ago
The car is almost finished changing lanes when the video begins. Press play, press pause, the car is 90 to 95% in control of the left lane.
Given the camera position and bedside location of the truck at the first second of the video, the truck's left wheels are just over the line.

At least he used his turn signal when getting back into the left lane from the shoulder😂🤪

Someone tried to do this once to me on the interstate driving a family to the airport. Went up the side and slamed the brakes, luckily I was able to dodge it..people suck.

As I aways say
I dare them to do that in front of my trucks or vehicle
Lower the gear and drive them
Home from being such a dick with ears breathing air

u/EmperorDeathBunny 6h ago
Both are crazy. Cammer dangerously cut off the car which pissed them off. Not sure if cammer just wasn't paying attention or if they were intentionally blocking.

These don't happen in Africa because the economy is stressing people already. They will beat you up if you break-check drivers who are going about their day-to-day activities trying to figure out how to provide for their families
