But Blåhaj really ties any room together.

My mom came to help me move this summer. I had already stayed up all night hiding any and all feminine clothes and acessories. I didnt think about Blahaj. She said:
"Grown men shouldnt have stuffed animals. Actually grown adults in general shouldnt have stuffed animals"

u/RiskieRaskalle 5h ago
You're mom is so wrong for that, tbh

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 5h ago
I agree but im trying to be delicate about how I reshape her old fashioned way of thinking because my innate reaction is to get angry and experience has taught me that leads to ineffective communication
39
u/A-Wings-are-Neat 4h ago
Just hit her with paraphrased CS Lewis lol
Though idk if simply saying “I’m an adult, I can make my own decisions,” would start a fight so maybe that’s a bad suggestion. I’m sorry your mom is so rigid and out of touch

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 4h ago
I tried that one when I started growing my hair out. We argued about it enough times that she finally stopped telling me to get a haircut
•
u/GoldenFlyingPenguin 43m ago
Holy... That sounds just like my mom, it was always "you should cut your hair, it's getting too long"
Luckily I am trying to go for bob-cuts now because I think they look cute, so she has less to complain about now.

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 5h ago
Agreed. Mom's a prude and in the wrong 100% here. Dazed you have as many stuffed animals, and feminine stuff for that matter, as you want.
15
u/MightyWeeb 4h ago
Agree, I'm a 25yo but people will have to pry my plushies from my cold dead hands
7
u/Archangel3d 3h ago
I'm not into stuffed animals but what's the big deal? Why is the mom so opposed? It's a quintessentially harmless soft thing in a hurtful, hard world.
12
u/CursedNobleman 3h ago
It's a cute pet that doesn't shit the bed, scream, or get health issues.
*Source: I have cute doggies that scream and get health issues.

Your mom sounds kinda sad she can't have a plushie. It would be kinda hilarious to get her one for holidays or birthday, as a joke, or maybe trying to give her the key to where she locked away her childhood self. Best if it was a plushie of an animal she find of, so it's less likely to throw it away.

When I was working for the red cross at 20 and ordering a hot chocolate while taking the older ladies out to eat on a trip, the social worker told me that at my age I shouldn't be drinking chocolate in a restaurant anymore. 😭 I wonder if it would have been cool as a girl for her. 💅

Can someone explain the shark? I keep seeing sharks referenced together with trans people and it confuses me.
248
u/DBSeamZ 6h ago
It’s a plushie from IKEA called Blåhaj (I think I spelled that right anyway), beyond that I think it’s just a meme like ace people and garlic bread.
110
u/Bluesnow2222 5h ago
Now I want to know more about Ace folks and garlic bread.
133
u/Kazinam 5h ago
The joke is garlic bread being better than sex
66
u/Nightfury4_4 5h ago
It is tho
63
u/dragn99 5h ago
This is like the "you can control white people with cheese" thing all over again. Cheese is really good, okay?!
19
9
u/Maur2 3h ago
An old book said you can fascinate women with cheese.
All the women I have asked about that confirms it works, so... shrug
3
u/Weerdo5255 1h ago
I've always just had the riddle of, try and name one food that does not go with cheese or chocolate.
11
u/xboxiscrunchy 5h ago
The joke is for someone who’s ace and therefore doesn’t care for sex that yes garlic bread is indeed preferable.
9
u/Warrior_of_Discord 4h ago
The question is: Is your sex so bad that any generic garlic bread is better than it, or is the garlic so amazing that it's better than sex

it's just this unfunny gag of characters saying 'I like [gender]' and the ace character says 'I like garlic bread'
that's literally it
16

u/Teaisserious 3h ago
It also has the color scheme of the trans flag. As an aside the joke for ace people is that garlic bread is better than sex, but literally instead of figuratively.

u/Bsjennings 5h ago
Its a meme that the trans community fully embraced. I love my shark
•
u/ABHOR_pod 31m ago
Funnily enough if you go to the IKEA website and search for "Pride," the first result is a BLÅHAJ followed by two rainbow tote bags.
44
u/Driftlack 6h ago
It's SOOO soft and cudly!
It's blue, white and pink, which are the trans colors.
DIBS! Not giving it back!
35
u/Keyndoriel 6h ago
It started as a meme on Tumblr because the shark is both cute and has the trans colors and its sort of grown from there
The shark is from ikea
34
u/OncomingStormDW 5h ago
That’s Blahaj, a stuffed shark from IKEA.
No one is sure how it began, but it I’m 90% sure it’s just “Blahaj is a cute and affordable plushie.” That a lot of trans women just happened to adopt. (Sort of like the Amazon Basics skirt.)
(I’ve read some wild theories, like it being a dig at that soul surfer TERF who lost her arm to a shark. But none of those hold water under further scrutiny.)
7
u/Tylendal 1h ago
Well, the shark is blue, with a white belly, and a pink mouth, and, well, trans people will appropriate anything that's not nailed down if it's white, blue, and pink. [Said affectionately.]
•
u/IRockIntoMordor 47m ago
Also, it's pretty easy to fully hug due to its size, so it's a very good companion for times you might need some comfort. And when going through a difficult time, such as cracking the egg (realising you are trans) or actually transitioning, every bit of comfort is welcome.
And he just looks super funny and goofy.
We love shonk. :3

u/astralseat 1h ago
Blahaj is the guiding whale shark of the trans community. It has started with IKEA plushies, and is a great inside identifier that the person is on the lgbtq spectrum if they got that plushie, or even some kind of indicator of blahaj worship
•
u/pianohon 34m ago
it's a very big shark plushie that doesn't cost a lot of money. a lot of trans people are isolated due to transphobia. a big buggable plushie helps.
1
u/Im_Balto 1h ago
The color scheme of the shark is similar to the trans flag
It’s just a fun little item that almost every trans person I know owns

"Um... i wanted to date a girl so uh... i redecorated my room to study their culture"

u/Toutatis12 6h ago
Er... isn't that just a room save for maybe a shark if the visitor recognizes the meaning? Feel like I am missing the punchline here cause I have known guys with rooms like this
146
u/xboxiscrunchy 6h ago
It’s extremely girly. There’s the shark, makeup, pictures of them in a bunny outfit and dresses and tons of cute stuffed animals.
-20
u/Toutatis12 6h ago
Point being? Look I get the room is 'traditionally effeminate' but i have known guys back in college like this. Interests and likes aren't gendered things

37
u/MothashipQ 6h ago
I think it's great that you have a very pregressive mindset, but if people like the ones from my hometown were to see my room like this after knowing me in the past, they would be extremely thrown off, and probably think I'm a gay man at best. That being said, Idk how far OP is into her transition at time of making this, but even if I could "untrans my room" idk how I'd explain the changes from HRT and my voice to my old friends without coming out.
14
u/Keyndoriel 6h ago
This. I could remove every ounce of boy from my room but I still have the issue of my hair being chopped and the fact I've mysteriously lost my quad D cups
3
u/Melodic_Sherbet_3629 4h ago
I think the tits might ellicit a stronger reaction.
2
u/MothashipQ 4h ago
Lumped in under "changes from HRT," along with new body shape, less muscle, softer skin, etc.
3
u/Toutatis12 6h ago
I think its the wombo-combo of autism and being raised with a very open mind. That said the only way to make things background noise to the point of non-gendering them is to make the effort to treat it and by extension the person as just another person just with tastes that might be different. But I understand what you mean sadly.

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 5h ago
In this subreddit most people would agree with you. Unfortunately the world as a whole is not quite as open minded
15
u/Several_Dot_4532 6h ago
And if it recognize the meaning it's not to be worried with them about coming out

Normies wouldn’t know this is a trans room

Normies would think this is a girls room and definitely question (or at least silently judge her) over the room.

I mean, look, just because I have Pompompurin, Blåhaj, and more than three pillows, that doesnt excuse your basically showing everyone my boudoir! I demand satisfaction.

Ugh my house is still boymoding so can’t relate yet.
Though I cracked and finally ordered my giant blahj this week…
and I do have make-up all over my bathroom…
lol nvm I guess.

u/LilFrecklesSunshine 3h ago
Wait, wait, wait... am I just learning that My Melody is a trans thing and not just a me thing?
1
u/insane_contin 2h ago
I'm lucky enough it took me a moment to realize what's going on with the first panel. It must be hard as hell for some people.
1
u/Your_Cat_In_Disguise 1h ago
This is basically how/why one of my friends from my hometown came out to me as trans.
I guess she was disappointed that I immediately accepted it and didn't make a big deal about her being a makeup guru with fancy nails now lmaooooo
Her nails are SO fancy now omg haha

Oh look, another slice of life post about MTF. It isn’t very interesting, and I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be funny, though the art is great. I guess the joke is that it actually is harder to come out than to organize your room, and there’s some whacky irony there?
-20
u/Cilarnen 3h ago
That’s a child’s room, trans or otherwise, and is the only thing you should be embarrassed about 😂

u/MisterDonkey 3h ago
I didn't become a grown man and work my life away to not be as childish as I please.
